The efficiencies of many ground motion intensity measures in terms of establishing a relationship between the earthquake response and earthquake properties were evaluated in this study. In scope of the study, the structures at medium period range were considered. The evaluation was performed by using ground motion intensity measures which consider; (i) period elongation due to structural damage and, (ii) the effects of higher modes on the structural response. Moreover, structures with regular plan and elevation geometries with three dimensional and symmetrical structural systems which minimize the unwanted plastic mechanisms were used in the study. The nonlinear time history analyses of the models were performed and the roof displacements of structural models were correlated with ground motion intensity measures. The obtained relationships were evaluated with statistical parameters such as Pearson's Coefficient, Determination Coefficient and Spearman's Coefficient. The results obtained from the study provided illuminating data on which ground motion intensity measures can be used most effectively with which type of structures. For structures in the medium period range, ground motion intensity measures based on velocity and energy are observed to be effective together with the ground motion intensity measures which are based on spectral acceleration scaled within a certain period range, which are frequently used in modern structural codes.
