This research determined the engine warm-up time and the number of tests that must be carried out to obtain the performance parameters of a Diesel cycle engine. To this end, an agricultural tractor coupled to an eddy current dynamometer via a power take-off was used. Pure biodiesel (B100) was used as the fuel, and the hourly consumption was determined by means of a flowmeter. Data regarding torque, power, and hourly and specific fuel consumption was collected and analyzed at three engine warm-up times (20, 60, and 100 min). To determine the number of tests, 18 dynamometric tests were carried out to verify which of those presented the smallest experimental error, through the smallest coefficient of variation. No difference was observed in relation to the warm-up time for the analyzed variables, with a time of 20 min being enough to start the engine performance evaluations. In total, four trials were sufficient to assess engine performance and reduce experimental error.

During the acquisition and use of an agricultural tractor, the consumption of fuel by the engine must be taken into account by the user, considering its nonrenewable origin and the marketing price. Appropriate strategies in driving tractors can help users to reduce production costs. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the fuel consumption of an agricultural tractor using different driving strategies. Load levels were imposed, following the instructions from Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development Code 2, using an instrumented dynamometer car, in a concrete test track. Six load levels (30, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80% of Q0) and three travel speeds (5.16, 7.29, and 10.48 km h-1) were applied for the strategies used (Full Throttle and Shifted Up - Throttle Back), where Q0 is the traction force corresponding to the maximum power in the drawbar for each gear selected. Three repetitions were made, which totaled 108 experimental units (2 × 3 × 6 × 3), in a completely randomized experimental design. Shifted Up - Throttle Back mode should be used as a strategy of tractor driving, because it can save up to 29.39% of fuel in relation to the Full Throttle mode, typically used by users.

Length-weight relationships are commonly used in fisheries biology to convert length measures into weight and to ascertain the growth characteristics related to those variables. On the other hand, length-weight relationships are used for estimating fishes’ condition factor, and these values are used for comparing the “condition”, “fatness” or “well-being” of fish (LE CREN, 1951; FROESE, 2006). The condition factor could reflect the physiological state of a fish, which is influenced by both intrinsic (gonadal development, organic reserves, presence or absence of food in the gut) and extrinsic (food availability, environmental variability) factors (NIKOLSKY, 1969). Objective : To determine the prevalence of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil. Method : We conducted an extensive investigation in clinics and hospitals that provide specialized assistance to these patients, contacted neurologists and the regional association of people with ALS. Results : On July 31, 2010, 70 patients were alive and diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Considering the population living in the city in the same period (1,409,351), the estimated prevalence was 5.0 cases per 100,000 people (95% CI, 3.9-6.2), being higher for men (5.2/100,000 95% CI, 3.6-7.2) than for women (4.8/100,000 95% CI, 3.4-6.5). The prevalence increased with age peaking in the age group 70-79 years in both genders. Conclusion : The prevalence of ALS in the city of Porto Alegre is similar to that reported in other parts of the world. Objetivo : Determinar a prevalência de esclerose lateral amiotrófica (ELA) no município de Porto Alegre, Brasil. Método : Foi realizada ampla busca em hospitais especializados, contato com neurologistas e com a associação regional dos portadores de ELA para identificar os casos. Resultados : No dia 31 de julho de 2010, 70 pacientes estavam vivos e com diagnóstico de ELA. Considerando a população residente no município no mesmo período (1.409.351), a prevalência estimada foi de 5,0 casos a cada 100.000 pessoas (IC 95%, 3,9-6,2), sendo maior para os homens (5,2/100.000 IC 95%, 3,6-7,2) do que para as mulheres (4,8/100.000 IC 95%, 3,4-6,5). A prevalência aumentou com a idade, atingindo um pico entre os 70 e 79 anos, em ambos os sexos. Conclusão : A prevalência de ELA no município de Porto Alegre é similar à encontrada em outras localidades no mundo.

This paper aimed to evaluate the performance of a Diesel cycle engine, changing the configurations for the air and fuel supply system. Variables analyzed were torque, power, specific fuel consumption and thermal efficiency in four different engine configurations (aspirated, aspirated + service, turbocharged + service and turbocharged). For that, there were dynamometer experiments by power take-off of an agricultural tractor. The experimental outline used was entirely randomized, in a bifatorial design with three repetitions. Results indicated that the engine supercharge, compared to its original configuration, provided a significant increase of torque and power. Only the addition of turbo does not caused a significant effect in the engine performance. Application of turbocharger provides an improvement in the burning of the air/fuel mixture, which favors the increase of engine power and; consequently, reduced the specific fuel consumption.

Catfishes may have two sonic organs: pectoral spines for stridulation and swimbladder drumming muscles. The aim of this study was to characterize the sound production of the catfish Iheringichthys labrosus. The I. labrosus male and female emits two different types of sounds: stridulatory sounds (655.8 + 230 Hz) consisting of a train of pulses, and drumming sounds (220 + 46 Hz), which are composed of single-pulse harmonic signals. Stridulatory sounds are emitted during abduction of the pectoral spine. At the base of the spine there is a dorsal process that bears a series of ridges on its latero-ventral surface, and by pressing the ridges against the groove (with an unspecialized rough surface) during a fin sweep, the animal produce a series of short pulses. Drumming sound is produced by an extrinsic sonic muscle, originated on a flat tendon of the transverse process of the fourth vertebra and inserted on the rostral and ventral surface of the swimbladder. The sounds emitted by both mechanisms are emitted in distress situation. Distress was induced by manipulating fish in a laboratory tank while sounds were recorded. Our results indicate that the catfish initially emits a stridulatory sound, which is followed by a drumming sound. Simultaneous production of stridulatory and drumming sounds was also observed. The catfish drumming sounds were lower in dominant frequency than stridulatory sounds, and also exhibited a small degree of dominant frequency modulation. Another behaviour observed in this catfish was the pectoral spine locking. This reaction was always observed before the distress sound production. Like other authors outline, our results suggest that in the catfish I. labrosus stridulatory and drumming sounds may function primarily as a distress call.Bagres podem apresentar dois órgãos sonoros: o espinho peitoral para o som peitoral ou estridulatório e o músculo sonoro da bexiga natatória. O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar a produção de som no bagre Iheringichthys labrosus. Essa espécie emite dois sons diferentes, o som peitoral ou estridulatório (655,8 + 230 Hz) que consiste numa série de pulsos, e o som de tamboril (220 + 46 Hz) que é composto por sinais harmônicos de pulso simples. O som peitoral é emitido com o movimento do espinho da nadadeira peitoral. A base do espinho possui um processo dorsal que suporta uma série de cristas na sua superfície lateroventral, e ao pressionar as cristas contra o sulco (com uma superfície rugosa não especializada) durante o movimento de abertura da nadadeira, se produz uma série de pulsos curtos. O som de tamboril é produzido por um músculo sônico extrínseco, originado em um tendão plano preso ao processo transversal da quarta vértebra e inserido nas superfícies rostral e ventral da bexiga natatória. Os sons são emitidos por ambos os mecanismos em situação de estresse, a qual foi induzida através da manipulação dos peixes em um tanque no laboratório, enquanto os sons eram gravados. Nossos resultados indicam que o bagre emite primeiro o som peitoral e em seguida o som de tamboril. Também foi observada a produção simultânea dos sons estridulatório e de tamboril. O som de tamboril mostra uma frequência dominante mais baixa do que o som peitoral, e também apresenta um grau menor de modulação de frequência dominante. Isso pode estar relacionado com um som de cortejo, como verificado em outros peixes teleósteos. Outro comportamento observado nessa espécie de bagre é a capacidade de travar o espinho peitoral. Essa reação foi observada imediatamente antes da produção do som. Como descrevem outros autores, nossos resultados sugerem que em I. labrosus o som de estridulação e de tamboril funcionam como uma chamada de alarme.

4 Abstract: This paper reports the case of a 57-year-old, previously healthy male with no systemic symp- toms who over a short period of time developed multiple wart-like lesions on his trunk, limbs and face, typical lesions of acanthosis nigricans in the major body folds and tripe palms. Diagnostic tests revealed a metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma. Despite the implementation of therapy, which had a transient effect on the tumor and skin lesions, the patient died in 14 months. The association of these three para- neoplastic dermatoses (florid cutaneous papillomatosis, acanthosis nigricans maligna and tripe palms) in the same patient, apparently with a common pathogenic mechanism, is noteworthy. Keywords: Acanthosis nigricans, paraneoplastic syndromes; Stomach neoplasms Resumo: Apresenta-se o caso clinico de um doente de 57 anos, previamente saudavel, sem sintoma- tologia sistemica, que, num curto intervalo de tempo, desenvolve multiplas lesoes semelhantes a verru- gas virais no tronco, membros e face, lesoes tipicas de acantose nigricante nas grandes pregas e uma queratodermia difusa palmar com paquidermatoglifia. Os exames complementares de diagnostico rev- elaram uma neoplasia gastrica metastizada. Apesar da instituicao da terapeutica, com efeito transitorio na neoplasia e nas lesoes cutâneas, o doente viria a falecer em 14 meses. Salientamos a associacao destas tres dermatoses paraneoplasicas num mesmo paciente: papilomatose cutânea florida, acantose nigricante maligna e tripe palms que parecem ter um mecanismo patogenico comum. O histiocitoma fibroso é tumor heterogéneo composto por fibroblastos, histiócitos e vasos sanguíneos. Efectuamos uma revisão histopatológica retrospectiva de 95 biopsias de histiocitomas fibrosos do nosso arquivo dos últimos 3,5 anos, com o objectivo de avaliar a localização, delimitação, alteração da epiderme, indução folículo-sebácea, celularidade, vascularização, padrão do colagénio e tipo de células constituintes. Na maioria das biopsias, confirmamos as características histopatológicas clássicas dos histiocitomas fibrosos. Achados interessantes observados no nosso estudo foram presença de células nódulos linfoides, mastócitos e infiltrado de células inflamatórias.

OBJETIVO: A presente pesquisa teve como objetivo determinar a frequência e a ocorrência de elementos pré-linguísticos em crianças normais durante o primeiro ano de vida. MÉTODOS: A amostra constituiu-se de 33 crianças nascidas a termo e normais, no Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, selecionadas aleatoriamente para um estudo de coorte. As informações, de acordo com as variáveis sorriso social, sons inarticulados, balbucio monossilábico, balbucio polissilábico, primeiras palavras/palavras-frase, jargão e frases, foram obtidas através do inquérito (informações dos pais), da observação espontânea do examinador e de estímulos facilitadores. RESULTADOS: A partir dos resultados obtidos, é possível estabelecer um padrão de desenvolvimento normal das manifestações pré-linguísticas. CONCLUSÕES: Os resultados indicaram a necessidade de revisar dados de avaliação de linguagem já estabelecidos por pesquisas realizadas no passado e as avaliações em uso atualmente.

Our aim was to evaluate the acquisition of neuropsychomotor development marks in small for gestational age infants during the first six months of life. A non-controlled cross-section study with thirty full-term newborn small for gestational age infants was performed in a University Hospital in the Southern region of Brazil. These infants were followed up during six months and compared with literature data regarding adequate to gestational age newborn babies. Anthropometric data, epidemiologic characteristics, neurological exam and neuropsychomotor evolution were analyzed. There were significant variations in the acquisition of abilities, as the cephalic support at 3 months of age and delay in lalation. In other aspects, babies born small for gestational age evoluted in a similar way as newborn ones standards. It is suggested that case control studies are performed aiming at deepening the analysis of these studies. Nosso objetivo foi avaliar a aquisição de marcos do desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor em crianças nascidas pequenas para a idade gestacional, durante o primeiro semestre de vida. Foi realizado um estudo de coorte não controlada, com 30 recém-nascidos pequenos para a idade gestacional provenientes de um hospital universitário na região sul do Brasil, acompanhados durante seis meses e comparados com dados de literatura a respeito de recém-nascidos adequados para a idade gestacional. Foram analisados dados antropométricos, características epidemiológicas e a evolução do exame neurológico e do desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor. Houve variações significativas na aquisição de habilidades como o sustento cefálico aos 3 meses e atraso na lalação. Nos demais aspectos os bebês nascidos pequenos para a idade gestacional evoluíram de forma semelhante aos padrões de lactentes normais. Sugere-se que estudos caso-controle sejam realizados com a finalidade de aprofundar a análise desses resultados.

A participação de marcadores bioquímicos na avaliação de quadros de asfixia neonatal é cada vez mais relevante. A proteína S100B é de particular importância neste campo. O objetivo deste estudo foi procurar destacar a importância da proteína S100B na avaliação de recém-nascidos a termo com quadro de encefalopatia hipóxico-isquêmica, assim como correlacionar com outras substâncias que também participam do processo isquêmico. Foram analisados 21 casos de recém nascidos a termo que desenvolveram encefalopatia hipóxico-isquêmica no período de setembro de 2003 a outubro de 2004. Realizadas coletas no 1º e 4º dia de vida e dosadas, por método imunocitoquímico, a proteína S100B e o lactato. Observouse correlação positiva entre as duas substâncias, assim como quando comparadas entre si nas suas respectivas dosagens, obteve-se significância estatística. Biochemical markers have played an increasingly relevant role in the assessment of neonatal asphyxia. The S100B protein is particularly important in re s e a rch conducted in this field. The purpose of this study was to underline the importance of the S100B protein in the assessment of term newborn infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, as well as to relate it to other substances also involved in the ischemic p rocess. An assessment was made from September 2003 to October 2004 of 21 term newborn infants who developed hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Samples were collected on the 1st and 4th day of life and S100B p rotein and lactate concentrations were calculated using the immune cytochemical method. A positive relationship was found between the two substances. Additionally, a comparison between the two substances showed a statistically significant correlation.

Although rare in childhood, stroke may have a serious impact when it happens in this stage of life. Also, it may be the first sign of a systemic disease. We report 12 cases of patients with stroke treated in the Neuropediatrics Unit of Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA) from March 1997 to March 2000. All patients, from term infants to 12-year-old children hospitalized in the Pediatrics Unit of HCPA, had clinical suspicion of stroke, which was later confirmed by radiological studies. Patient follow up ranged from 1 to 6 years (mean = 3.4 years). Presenting symptoms were hemiparesis in 9 patients, seizures in 7, deviation of labial commissure in 3, and loss of consciousness in 1. The increase in the number of cases of childhood stroke identified and later confirmed by noninvasive methods had helped in the determination of different ethiologies of stroke: the most frequent being hematologic, cardiac and genetic diseases. However, our study included 6 newborns with stroke whose ethiology was not identified. Seven children with seizures received phenobarbital. Six term infants had neonatal seizures secondary to stroke and restricted to the first 72 hours of life. Doença cerebrovascular isquêmica (DCVI) é rara na infância, mas quando ocorre, o impacto pode ser muito sério. Pode ser a primeira manifestação de uma doença sistêmica. Relatamos a ocorrência de 12 casos de DCVI. Foram diagnosticados e tratados no Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA) na Unidade de Neuropediatria de março de 1997 a março de 2000. Todos os casos com suspeita clínica de DCVI foram confirmados por avaliação radiológica de recém-nascidos de termo (RNT) a crianças até 12 anos de idade, que internaram na Unidade de Pediatria do HCPA. Eles foram acompanhados de um a seis anos (média 3,4 anos). Os sintomas iniciais foram: hemiparesia em 9 pacientes, convulsões em 7, desvio da comissura labial em 3 e perda da consciência em um. O aumento do reconhecimento de DCVI em crianças, auxiliado pela confirmação do diagnóstico através de exames não invasivos, tem auxiliado na identificação da etiologia. As etiologias mais frequentes foram doenças hematológicas, cardíacas e genéticas. Contudo, nosso estudo mostrou 6 recém-nascidos com DCVI em que não foi identificada etiologia. Sete crianças com convulsões usaram fenobarbital. Em seis RNT com DCVI as convulsões estiveram restritas às primeiras 72 horas de vida.

Objetivo: o presente estudo procura avaliar as possíveis patologias que se manifestam associadas à hiperecogenicidade dos vasos talâmicos na ultra-sonografia cerebral, e observar a freqüência com que ocorrem. Métodos: a amostra foi constituída de 206 recém-nascidos prematuros, nascidos no Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, no período de julho de 1998 a maio de 1999. Todos realizaram a ultra-sonografia cerebral na primeira semana de vida. Foram incluídos no estudo aqueles prematuros que necessitaram de internação hospitalar, e que tiveram o termo de consentimento informado assinado por um dos responsáveis. Foram excluídos aqueles cuja ultra-sonografia cerebral evidenciava sangramento cerebral e/ou malformações congênitas associadas, e os que evoluíram para óbito antes da realização do exame. Resultados: a ultra-sonografia cerebral levou à identificação de 65 recém-nascidos prematuros com hiperecogenicidade dos vasos talâmicos e de 141 recém-nascidos prematuros sem. Conclusão: a forma de apresentação do tipo pélvica ao nascimento, a maior idade gestacional, o maior peso do recém-nascido ao nascimento e a classificação grande para a idade gestacional foram fatores de risco para a ocorrência de hiperecogenicidade dos vasos talâmicos, enquanto a presença de hipertensão materna durante o período de gestação tendeu a ser fator de proteção. Os recém-nascidos que apresentaram crises convulsivas durante o período de internação hospitalar tiveram risco 3,2 vezes maior de ter hiperecogenicidade dos vasos talâmicos, quando comparados aos que não apresentaram crises convulsivas.

Fasciculations are symptoms present in a broad spectrum of conditions, ranging from normal manifestations to motor neuron diseases. They also represent the main picture of benign fasciculation syndrome. We report a case of such syndrome: a 48-years-old woman complaining about fasciculations for three decades who remained with the symptoms even after the compensation of a disclosed hyperthyroidism. The introduction of gabapentin rendered control of her fasciculations. The available data in the literature about the therapeutic approaches for fasciculations are revised, as long as the rare reports of evolution from patients with "benign" fasciculations to cases of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, underlining the importance of following the patients with fasciculations. Fasciculações são sintomas presentes em um amplo espectro de condições, desde manifestações normais até doenças do neurônio motor. Elas representam também o principal aspecto da síndrome de fasciculações benignas. Relatamos um caso desta síndrome: uma paciente de 48 anos com queixas de fasciculações por três décadas que, mesmo após a compensação de um quadro de hipertireoidismo, permaneceu com os sintomas. A introdução de gabapentina levou a controle das fasciculações. Os dados disponíveis na literatura sobre as abordagens terapêuticas para fasciculações são revisados, assim como os raros relatos de evolução de pacientes com fasciculações "benignas" para casos de esclerose lateral amiotrófica, salientando a importância do seguimento dos pacientes com fasciculações.

We studied the mouth opening response to appendicular compression in two groups of children. This study was performed with the intention of testing the semiologic role of the act of mouth opening following stimulation of various regions, based on the hand mouth reflex of Babkin. Group I was formed by 33 normal children who underwent monthly follow up assessments since birth; and group II consisted of 50 children older than 6 months of age, known to have a neurologic deficit and a neuro-psychomotor development equivalent to that of a child in the first trimester of life. A sample of 51 children aged 7 with a history of prematurity was compared to 44 age-matched children who were born at term at the HCPA. The premature children had had gestational ages up to 37 weeks and 6 days and were born weighing less than 2500g. The control group consisted of children born with gestational age between 38 and 42 weeks and weights above 2S00g. The evaluation criteria were clinical examination, neurological examination and the evolutional neurological evaluation (ENE). The results pointed out that impulsiveness, aggressiveness, disorganization and enuresis were prevalent symptoms of developmental disturbances in the sample of prematures. Alterations at neurological examination did not discriminate between the two groups, although cerebral palsy occurred only in the proup of prematures. The ENE functions which differentiated the two groups studied were dynamic balance, appendicular and trunk-limb coordination and motor persistence.

OBJETIVO: chamar a atenção para o diagnóstico da doença de Devic e realizar revisão da literatura. DESCRIÇÃO: paciente de 6 anos, do sexo masculino, apresentou subitamente paresia nos membros inferiores, que desapareceu no decorrer da internação. No entanto, à medida que a paresia desaparecia, ocorria perda da visão. Os sintomas só foram revertidos após o uso de prednisona. COMENTÁRIOS: a abordagem diagnóstica e terapêutica foi semelhante à usada em outros casos em diferentes centros de referência, ou seja, o diagnóstico foi clínico e o tratamento com prednisona, obtendo-se a melhora completa dos sintomas. Apesar disso, várias contradições ainda cercam essa doença, desde a etiologia até sua relação com outras doenças desmielinizantes, como a esclerose múltipla.
