Introduction: Since the National Curricular Guidelines for the Medicine course were implemented, with emphasis on the training of professionals with a generalist profile, the factors that may contribute to the interest in professional practice are unknown. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the perception of medical students regarding their generalist training and the factors that influence the desire for professional practice. Methodology: Descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study of qualitative and explanatory character with 523 students from different medical courses in the city of Salvador-Bahia, who answered an online survey after signing the informed consent form. The sample was categorized into interest in Immediate Specialization (IS) and among those who intend to Act as a Generalist (AG). The age and period of the course were also categorized into groups. Results: The age of the sample was 18 to 25 years in 83.7% (n = 438), with 72.5% (n = 380) being female, attending 69% of the 4º to 9º semesters (n = 363). The Immediate Specialization group represented 27.2% (95% CI: 35% -73%) and the group that intends to Act as a Generalist, 72.8% (95% CI: 68% -76%). General training did not influence the option for professional practice with RR = 0.81 (95% CI: 0.55-1.20) p = 0.308. INTRODUCTION: Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) may lead to reduced functional mobility and balance. It is important to establish specific parameters that identify these changes and predict the risk of falls in these patients. The aim was to compare balance, functional mobility, and occurrence of falls among patients with and without HAM/TSP and to suggest values to predict the risk of falls in these patients. METHODS: A cross-sectional study in patients with and without HAM/TSP involved balance assessments based on the berg balance scale (BBS) and functional mobility evaluation based on the timed up and go (TUG) test. From reports of falls, the sensitivity, specificity, and best cutoff points for the risk of falls assessed by these instruments were established using the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve; 5% alpha was considered. Resumo Objetivo: retratar a criação de uma classificação de risco gestacional baseada no perfil dos óbitos maternos em município com alta ocorrência, e sua utilização no pré-natal. Métodos: o perfil foi elaborado utilizando-se fichas de óbitos maternos ocorridos em 2008-2013, considerando-se idade, escolaridade, raça/cor da pele, residência, doença preexistente e história reprodutiva. Resultados: o óbito materno foi mais frequente entre pardas/pretas, 30-39 anos de idade, baixa escolaridade, residência em distritos vulneráveis e doença cardíaca como principal patologia preexistente; o risco gestacional foi classificado a partir desse perfil, atribuindo-se pontos (1-3) para cada menor/maior frequência e definindo prioridades (P) assistenciais - PI=risco habitual (4-9pt: rotina para consultas/exames), PII=risco alto (10-16pt: reduzir tempo de espera para consultas/exames em 50%) e PIII=risco muito alto (≥17pt: acesso a consultas/exames em até 7 dias). Conclusão: a nova classificação sensibilizou os profissionais quanto aos determinantes envolvidos nesses óbitos e à necessidade de priorizar o acesso ao pré-natal conforme o risco.
