Location anomalies of the thyroid gland are uncommon. Ectopic thyroid glands occur as the result of abnormal migration in embryological life of the thyroid gland from the root of the tongue to iys normal site anterior to the trachea. The most common localization of ectopic thyroid tissue is lingual thyroid. We report a 22 year-old white male patient who presented with complaints of swelling in the cervical area and who was diagnosed to be a case of lingual thyroid. The swelling was a smooth mass in the cervical area which was painless, mobile with swallowing and independent from tongue movements,. Cervical ultrasonography and scintigraphy revealed no thyroid tissue in the cervical area and a small radiactive uptake area in the middle of the submandibular glands in the upper part of the isthmus. The patient, whose thyroid hormone levels were within normal ranges, was provided with information on possible outcomes with and without surgery. The decision was not to perform an operation at present, but to follow up the patient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
