The article presents information on the impact of Mexico's new tax system on taxpayers in the country. After many years trying to raise tax collections in Mexico without significant success, Mexico's recently elected president, Felipe Calderon, was able to pass an innovative tax reform which includes the creation of a new tax regime intended to broaden the scope of the pre-existing income and asset tax system through the introduction of a "flat" tax as an alternative minimum tax, bringing in a set of new strict rules that are increasing tax revenues already. The unique features of Calderon's first comprehensive budget for 2008 include the new Flat Rate Business Tax and a new Tax on Cash Deposits (IDE), which will impose a tax of 2% on cash deposits made in Mexican bank accounts.
