Corrosion is a ubiquitous failure mode of materials in extreme environments. The more localized it is, the more difficult it is to detect and more deleterious its effects. Often, the progression of localized corrosion is accompanied by the evolution of porosity in materials, creating internal void-structures that facilitate the ingress of the external environment into the interior of the material, further accelerating the internal corrosion. Previously, the dominant morphology of such void-structures has been reported to be either three-dimensional (3D) or two-dimensional (2D). Here, we report a more localized form of corrosion, which we call 1D wormhole corrosion. Using electron tomography, we show multiple examples of this 1D and percolating morphology that manifests a significantly high aspect ratio differentiable from 2D and 3D corrosion. To understand the origin of this mechanism in a Ni-Cr alloy corroded by molten salt, we combined energy-filtered four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (EF-4D-STEM) and ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations to develop a vacancy mapping method with nanometer-resolution, identifying a remarkably high vacancy concentration in the diffusion-induced grain boundary migration (DIGM) zone, up to 100 times the equilibrium value at the melting point. These vacancy supersaturation regions act as the precursors of wormholes, and lead to the asymmetrical growth of voids along GBs. We show that similar 1D penetrating corrosion morphologies could also occur in other materials or corrosion conditions, implying the broad impact of this extremely localized corrosion mechanism. Deciphering the origins of 1D corrosion is an important step towards designing structural materials with enhanced corrosion resistance, and also offers new pathways to create ordered-porous materials for functional applications.

Yu et al . suggested calculating precisely the size ranges of the three parts of our figure 3A, adjusting the free-energy levels in figure 3B, and considering the shape effect in the first-principles calculation. The first and second suggestions raise strong concerns for misinterpretation and overinterpretation of our experiments. The original calculation is sufficient to support our claim about crystalline-to-disordered transformations.

High-throughput grain mapping with sub-nanometer spatial resolution is demonstrated using scanning nanobeam electron diffraction (also known as 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy, or 4D-STEM) combined with high-speed direct-electron detection. An electron probe size down to 0.5 nm in diameter is used and the sample investigated is a gold–palladium nanoparticle catalyst. Computational analysis of the 4D-STEM data sets is performed using a disk registration algorithm to identify the diffraction peaks followed by feature learning to map the individual grains. Two unsupervised feature learning techniques are compared: principal component analysis (PCA) and non-negative matrix factorization (NNMF). The characteristics of the PCA versus NNMF output are compared and the potential of the 4D-STEM approach for statistical analysis of grain orientations at high spatial resolution is discussed.

Van der Waals heteroepitaxy allows deterministic control over lattice mismatch or azimuthal orientation between atomic layers to produce long wavelength superlattices. The resulting electronic phases depend critically on the superlattice periodicity as well as localized structural deformations that introduce disorder and strain. Here, we introduce Bragg interferometry, based on four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy, to capture atomic displacement fields in twisted bilayer graphene with twist angles < 2{\deg}. Nanoscale spatial fluctuations in twist angle and uniaxial heterostrain are statistically evaluated, revealing the prevalence of short-range disorder in this class of materials. By quantitatively mapping strain tensor fields we uncover two distinct regimes of structural relaxation -- in contrast to previous models depicting a single continuous process -- and we disentangle the electronic contributions of the rotation modes that comprise this relaxation. Further, we find that applied heterostrain accumulates anisotropically in saddle point regions to generate distinctive striped shear strain phases. Our results thus establish the reconstruction mechanics underpinning the twist angle dependent electronic behaviour of twisted bilayer graphene, and provide a new framework for directly visualizing structural relaxation, disorder, and strain in any moir\'e material., Comment: 29 pages, 6 figures plus supporting information (42 pages, 28 figures)

These include molecular homogeneous catalysts incorporating various ligands, enzymes, and solids that include pairs of metal atoms mounted on supports. Catalysts in this broad class are active for numerous reactions and offer unexplored opportunities to address challenging reactions, such as oxidation of methane and oxidation of water in artificial photosynthesis. The subject of supported metal pair-site catalysts is in its infancy, facing challenges in (a) precise synthesis, (b) structure determination at the atomic scale, and (c) stabilization in reactive atmospheres. In this Perspective, we summarize key characteristics of molecular and enzymatic catalysts that incorporate neighboring metal centers and build on this foundation to assess the emerging literature of metal pair-site catalysts on various supports. The supported catalysts include those synthesized by anchoring molecular dinuclear precursors to support surfaces and those synthesized by selective formation of dinuclear surface species from mononuclear surface species. Examples of metals in this class are rhodium and iridium, and examples of supports are MgO and Fe2O3. We summarize characterization of these materials by electron microscopy and spectroscopy, emphasizing atomic-resolution aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopies that provide atomic-scale structural information and allow characterization of functioning catalysts, especially X-ray absorption spectroscopy. We list some opportunities for research, including suggestions that might lead to structurally well-defined supported metal pair-sites with new catalytic properties.

Strong multiple scattering of the probe in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) means image simulations are usually required for quantitative interpretation and analysis of elemental maps produced by electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). These simulations require a full quantum-mechanical treatment of multiple scattering of the electron beam, both before and after a core-level inelastic transition. Current algorithms scale quadratically and can take up to a week to calculate on desktop machines even for simple crystal unit cells and do not scale well to the nano-scale heterogeneous systems that are often of interest to materials science researchers. We introduce an algorithm with linear scaling that typically results in an order of magnitude reduction in compute time for these calculations without introducing additional error and discuss approximations that further improve computational scaling for larger scale objects with modest penalties in calculation error. We demonstrate these speed-ups by calculating the atomic resolution STEM-EELS map using the L-edge transition of Fe, for of a nanoparticle 80 \AA\ in diameter in 16 hours, a calculation that would have taken at least 80 days using a conventional multislice approach., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

Changes in lattice structure across sub-regions of protein crystals are challenging to assess when relying on whole crystal measurements. Because of this difficulty, macromolecular structure determination from protein micro and nanocrystals requires assumptions of bulk crystallinity and domain block substructure. Here we map lattice structure across micron size areas of cryogenically preserved three−dimensional peptide crystals using a nano-focused electron beam. This approach produces diffraction from as few as 1500 molecules in a crystal, is sensitive to crystal thickness and three−dimensional lattice orientation. Real-space maps reconstructed from unsupervised classification of diffraction patterns across a crystal reveal regions of crystal order/disorder and three−dimensional lattice tilts on the sub-100nm scale. The nanoscale lattice reorientation observed in the micron-sized peptide crystal lattices studied here provides a direct view of their plasticity. Knowledge of these features facilitates an improved understanding of peptide assemblies that could aid in the determination of structures from nano- and microcrystals by single or serial crystal electron diffraction., Marcus Gallagher-Jones et al. use 4DSTEM to reconstruct real-space maps of single peptide nanocrystals at cryogenic temperature. They identify regions of crystal order/disorder providing new insights into crystal mosaicity.

FePt granular films with grain size smaller than 10 nm are promising candidates for storage media used in the next generation heat-assisted magnetic recording technology. However, FePt films show degraded magnetic properties when the grain size is reduced to this scale, which cannot be explained solely by the finite size theory. In this study, we explored the structural cause of property degradation by employing advanced electron microscopy and atomistic modeling. Structural features unique to the nanostructured FePt granular films at significantly reduced grain sizes of 2∼8 nm were studied by high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy with geometric aberrations corrected up to the third order. Two critical structural parameters, the threshold grain size corresponding to the upper size limit of the FePt grains with zero chemical ordering and the sub-nanometer thin interfacial impurity at grain boundaries, were identified. A new atomistic model was developed to correlate these structural characteristics with key magnetic properties such as Curie temperature, saturation magnetization, magnetocrystalline anisotropy, and their grain-to-grain variation. The model shows good agreement with the experimental magnetic data and explains the gap in magnetic properties between the bulk and nanostructured FePt.

© 2018 Author(s). A key to the unique combination of electronic and optical properties in halide perovskite materials lies in their rich structural complexity. However, their radiation sensitive nature limits nanoscale structural characterization requiring dose efficient microscopic techniques in order to determine their structures precisely. In this work, we determine the space-group and directly image the Br halide sites of CsPbBr3, a promising material for optoelectronic applications. Based on the symmetry of high-order Laue zone reflections of convergent-beam electron diffraction, we identify the tetragonal (I4/mcm) structural phase of CsPbBr3at cryogenic temperature. Electron ptychography provides a highly sensitive phase contrast measurement of the halide positions under low electron-dose conditions, enabling imaging of the elongated Br sites originating from the out-of-phase octahedral rotation viewed along the [001] direction of I4/mcm persisting at room temperature. The measurement of these features and comparison with simulations yield an octahedral rotation angle of 6.5°(±1.5°). The approach demonstrated here opens up opportunities for understanding the atomic scale structural phenomena applying advanced characterization tools on a wide range of radiation sensitive halide-based all-inorganic and hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites.

© 2016 IEEE. A high frame rate detector system is being developed to enable fast real-time data analysis of scanning diffraction experiments in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). This is an end-to-end development that encompasses the data producing detector, data transportation, and real-time processing of data. The detector will consist of a central pixel sensor that is surrounded by annular silicon diodes. Both components of the detector system will synchronously capture data at almost 100 kHz frame rate, which produces an approximately 400 Gb/s data stream. Low-level preprocessing will be implemented in firmware before the data is streamed from the National Center for Electron Microscopy (NCEM) to the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC). Live data processing, before it lands on disk, will happen on the Cori supercomputer and aims to present scientists with prompt experimental feedback. This online analysis will provide rough information of the sample that can be utilized for sample alignment, sample monitoring and verification that the experiment is set up correctly. Only a compressed version of the relevant data is then selected for more in-depth processing.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline porous materials with designable topology, porosity and functionality, having promising applications in gas storage and separation, ion conduction and catalysis. It is challenging to observe MOFs with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) due to the extreme instability of MOFs upon electron beam irradiation. Here, we use a direct-detection electron-counting camera to acquire TEM images of the MOF ZIF-8 with an ultralow dose of 4.1 electrons per square ångström to retain the structural integrity. The obtained image involves structural information transferred up to 2.1 Å, allowing the resolution of individual atomic columns of Zn and organic linkers in the framework. Furthermore, TEM reveals important local structural features of ZIF-8 crystals that cannot be identified by diffraction techniques, including armchair-type surface terminations and coherent interfaces between assembled crystals. These observations allow us to understand how ZIF-8 crystals self-assemble and the subsequent influence of interfacial cavities on mass transport of guest molecules.

The local atomic structure of a crystalline sample aligned along a zone axis can be probed with a focused electron probe, which produces a convergent beam electron diffraction pattern. The introduction of high speed direct electron detectors has allowed for experiments that can record a full diffraction pattern image at thousands of probe positions on a sample. By incoherently summing these patterns over crystalline unit cells, we demonstrate that in addition to crystal structure and thickness, we can also estimate the local composition of a perovskite superlattice sample. This is achieved by matching the summed patterns to a library of simulated diffraction patterns. This technique allows for atomic-scale chemical measurements without requiring a spectrometer or hardware aberration correction.

We develop an automatic and objective method to measure and correct residual aberrations in atomic-resolution HRTEM complex exit waves for crystalline samples aligned along a low-index zone axis. Our method uses the approximate rotational point symmetry of a column of atoms or single atom to iteratively calculate a best-fit numerical phase plate for this symmetry condition, and does not require information about the sample thickness or precise structure. We apply our method to two experimental focal series reconstructions, imaging a β-Si3N4 wedge with O and N doping, and a single-layer graphene grain boundary. We use peak and lattice fitting to evaluate the precision of the corrected exit waves. We also apply our method to the exit wave of a Si wedge retrieved by off-axis electron holography. In all cases, the software correction of the residual aberration function improves the accuracy of the measured exit waves.

High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) examination of nanoparticles requires their placement on some manner of support – either TEM grid membranes or part of the material itself, as in many heterogeneous catalyst systems – but a systematic quantification of the practical imaging limits of this approach has been lacking. Here we address this issue through a statistical evaluation of how nanoparticle size and substrate thickness affects the ability to resolve structural features of interest in HRTEM images of metallic nanoparticles on common support membranes. The visibility of lattice fringes from crystalline Au nanoparticles on amorphous carbon and silicon supports of varying thickness was investigated with both conventional and aberration-corrected TEM. Over the 1–4 nm nanoparticle size range examined, the probability of successfully resolving lattice fringes differed significantly as a function both of nanoparticle size and support thickness. Statistical analysis was used to formulate guidelines for the selection of supports and to quantify the impact a given support would have on HRTEM imaging of crystalline structure. For nanoparticles ≥1 nm, aberration-correction was found to provide limited benefit for the purpose of visualizing lattice fringes; electron dose is more predictive of lattice fringe visibility than aberration correction. These results confirm that the ability to visualize lattice fringes is ultimately dependent on the signal-to-noise ratio of the HRTEM images, rather than the point-to-point resolving power of the microscope. This study provides a benchmark for HRTEM imaging of crystalline supported metal nanoparticles and is extensible to a wide variety of supports and nanostructures.

Four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM) is a technique where a full two-dimensional convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) pattern is acquired at every STEM pixel scanned. Capturing the full diffraction pattern provides a rich dataset that potentially contains more information about the specimen than is contained in conventional imaging modes using conventional integrating detectors. Using 4D datasets in STEM from two specimens, monolayer MoS2and bulk SrTiO3, we demonstrate multiple STEM imaging modes on a quantitative absolute intensity scale, including phase reconstruction of the transmission function via differential phase contrast imaging. Practical issues about sampling (i.e. number of detector pixels), signal-to-noise enhancement and data reduction of large 4D-STEM datasets are emphasized.

The capability of nanostructured ferritic alloys (NFAs) to manage high levels of transmutation product helium will help resolve one of the grand challenges to transforming the promise of C-free fusion energy into a reality. NFAs are dispersion strengthened by an ultrahigh density of Y-Ti-O nano-oxides (NOs), which result in both high strength and temperature limits, as well as unique irradiation tolerance. Here, aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy was used to characterize the NOs in four NFA conditions, including following severe deformation and extreme neutron radiation exposure. Fast Fourier Transform analysis of focal series images revealed the NO crystal structure, including the smallest at < 2 nm in diameter, to be Y2Ti2O7pyrochlore in all cases, consistent with both exit wave analysis and scanning transmission Z-contrast imaging of the atomic columns in a larger feature. The faceted NOs exhibit a quasi-epitaxial orientation relationship with the ferrite matrix: [110]YTO||[100]Feand [001]YTO||[010]Fe, forming a 5 × 7 near coincidence site interface. The NOs also exhibit size-dependent strains in both the oxide and matrix ferrite phases.

Unwanted motion of the probe with respect to the sample is a ubiquitous problem in scanning probe and scanning transmission electron microscopies, causing both linear and nonlinear artifacts in experimental images. We have designed a procedure to correct these artifacts by using orthogonal scan pairs to align each measurement line-by-line along the slow scan direction, by fitting contrast variation along the lines. We demonstrate the accuracy of our algorithm on both synthetic and experimental data and provide an implementation of our method.
