The rock-paper-scissor game -- which is characterized by three strategies R,P,S, satisfying the non-transitive relations S excludes P, P excludes R, and R excludes S -- serves as a simple prototype for studying more complex non-transitive systems. For well-mixed systems where interactions result in fitness reductions of the losers exceeding fitness gains of the winners, classical theory predicts that two strategies go extinct. The effects of spatial heterogeneity and dispersal rates on this outcome are analyzed using a general framework for evolutionary games in patchy landscapes. The analysis reveals that coexistence is determined by the rates at which dominant strategies invade a landscape occupied by the subordinate strategy (e.g. rock invades a landscape occupied by scissors) and the rates at which subordinate strategies get excluded in a landscape occupied by the dominant strategy (e.g. scissor gets excluded in a landscape occupied by rock). These invasion and exclusion rates correspond to eigenvalues of the linearized dynamics near single strategy equilibria. Coexistence occurs when the product of the invasion rates exceeds the product of the exclusion rates. Provided there is sufficient spatial variation in payoffs, the analysis identifies a critical dispersal rate $d^*$ required for regional persistence. For dispersal rates below $d^*$, the product of the invasion rates exceed the product of the exclusion rates and the rock-paper-scissor metacommunities persist regionally despite being extinction prone locally. For dispersal rates above $d^*$, the product of the exclusion rates exceed the product of the invasion rates and the strategies are extinction prone. This paper is a comprehensive study of a long observed phenomenon of increase in the stability margin and so the rate of convergence of a class of linear systems due to time delay. Our results determine (a) in what systems the delay can lead to increase in the rate of convergence, (b) the exact range of time delay for which the rate of convergence is greater than that of the delay free system, and (c) an estimate on the value of the delay that leads to the maximum rate of convergence. We also show that the ultimate bound on the maximum achievable rate of convergence via time delay is e (Euler's number) times the delay free rate. For the special case when the system matrix eigenvalues are all negative real numbers, we expand our results to show that the rate of convergence in the presence of delay depends only on the eigenvalues with minimum and maximum real parts. Moreover, we determine the exact value of the maximum rate of convergence and the corresponding maximizing time delay. The final contribution of this paper is to show the application of our results in analyzing the use of a delayed feedback to increase the rate of convergence of an agreement algorithm for networked systems.

This paper forms the first part of a series by the authors [GMV2,GMV3] concerning the structure theory of nilspaces of Antol\'in Camarena and Szegedy. A nilspace is a compact space $X$ together with closed collections of cubes $C^n(X)\subseteq X^{2^n}$, $n=1,2,\ldots$ satisfying some natural axioms. Antol\'in Camarena and Szegedy proved that from these axioms it follows that (certain) nilspaces are isomorphic (in a strong sense) to an inverse limit of nilmanifolds. The aim of our project is to provide a new self-contained treatment of this theory and give new applications to topological dynamics. This paper provides an introduction to the project from the point of view of applications to higher order Fourier analysis. We define and explain the basic definitions and constructions related to cubespaces and nilspaces and develop the weak structure theory, which is the first stage of the proof of the main structure theorem for nilspaces. Vaguely speaking, this asserts that a nilspace can be built as a finite tower of extensions where each of the successive fibers is a compact abelian group. We also make some modest innovations and extensions to this theory. In particular, we consider a class of maps that we term fibrations, which are essentially equivalent to what are termed fiber-surjective morphisms by Anatol\'in Camarena and Szegedy, and we formulate and prove a relative analogue of the weak structure theory alluded to above for these maps. In this paper, a mathematical model is proposed to analyze the dynamic behavior of COVID-19. Based on inter-city networked coupling effects, a fractional-order SEIHDR system with the real-data from 23 January to 18 March, 2020 of COVID-19 is discussed. Meanwhile, hospitalized individuals and the mortality rates of three types of individuals (exposed, infected and hospitalized) are firstly taken into account in the proposed model. And infectivity of individuals during incubation is also considered in this paper. By applying least squares method and predictor-correctors scheme, the numerical solutions of the proposed system in the absence of the inter-city network and with the inter-city network are stimulated by using the real-data from 23 January to $18-m$ March, 2020 where $m$ is equal to the number of prediction days. Compared with integer-order system ($\alpha=0$), the fractional-order model without network is validated to have a better fitting of the data on Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Huanggang and other cities. In contrast to the case without network, the results indicate that the inter-city network system may be not a significant case to virus spreading for China because of the lock down and quarantine measures, however, it may have an impact on cities that have not adopted city closure. Meanwhile, the proposed model better fits the data from 24 February to 31, March in Italy, and the peak number of confirmed people is also predicted by this fraction-order model. Furthermore, the existence and uniqueness of a bounded solution under the initial condition are considered in the proposed system. Afterwards, the basic reproduction number $R_0$ is analyzed and it is found to hold a threshold: the disease-free equilibrium point is locally asymptotically stable when $R_0\le 1$, which provides a theoretical basis for whether COVID-19 will become a pandemic in the future., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, ND Special Issue paper submitted

In this paper we first use the result in $[12]$ to remove the assumption of the $L^2$ boundedness of Weyl curvature in the gap theorem in $[9]$ and then obtain a gap theorem for a class of conformally compact Einstein manifolds with very large renormalized volume. We also uses the blow-up method to derive curvature estimates for conformally compact Einstein manifolds with large renormalized volume. The second part of this paper is on conformally compact Einstein manifolds with conformal infinities of large Yamabe constants. Based on the idea in $[15]$ we manage to give the complete proof of the relative volume inequality $(1.9)$ on conformally compact Einstein manifolds. Therefore we obtain the complete proof of the rigidity theorem for conformally compact Einstein manifolds in general dimensions with no spin structure assumption (cf. $[29, 15]$) as well as the new curvature pinch estimates for conformally compact Einstein manifolds with conformal infinities of very large Yamabe constant. In this paper we develop the basic tools for a classification of Killing vector fields of constant length on pseudo-Riemannian homogeneous spaces. This extends a recent paper of M. Xu and J. A. Wolf, which classified the pairs $(M,\xi)$ where $M = G/H$ is a Riemannian normal homogeneous space, G is a compact simple Lie group, and $\xi \in \mathfrak{g}$ defines a nonzero Killing vector field of constant length on $M$. The method there was direct computation. Here we make use of the moment map $M \to \mathfrak{g}^{*}$ and the flag manifold structure of $\mathrm{Ad} (G) \xi$ to give a shorter, more geometric proof which does not require compactness and which is valid in the pseudo-Riemannian setting. In that context we break the classification problem into three parts. The first is easily settled. The second concerns the cases where $\xi$ is elliptic and $G$ is simple (but not necessarily compact); that case is our main result here. The third, which remains open, is a more combinatorial problem involving elements of the first two.

In this paper we give an explicit description of the bounded displacement isometries of a class of spaces that includes the Riemannian nilmanifolds. The class of spaces consists of metric spaces (and thus includes Finsler manifolds) on which an exponential solvable Lie group acts transitively by isometries. The bounded isometries are proved to be of constant displacement. Their characterization gives further evidence for the author's 1962 conjecture on homogeneous Riemannian quotient manifolds. That conjecture suggests that if $\Gamma \backslash M$ is a Riemannian quotient of a connected simply connected homogeneous Riemannian manifold $M$, then $\Gamma \backslash M$ is homogeneous if and only if each isometry $\gamma \in \Gamma$ is of constant displacement. Our description of bounded isometries gives an alternative proof of an old result of J. Tits on bounded automorphisms of semisimple Lie groups. This article constitutes the final and main part of a three-paper sequence, whose goal is to prove global well-posedness and scattering of the energy critical Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equation (MKG) on $\mathbb{R}^{1+4}$ for arbitrary finite energy initial data. Using the successively stronger continuation/scattering criteria established in the previous two papers, we carry out a blow-up analysis and deduce that the failure of global well-posedness and scattering implies the existence of a nontrivial stationary or self-similar solution to MKG. Then, by establishing that such solutions do not exist, we complete the proof., 64 pages

In this paper we extend the local scalar curvature rigidity result in [6] to a small domain on general vacuum static spaces, which confirms the interesting dichotomy of local surjectivity and local rigidity about the scalar curvature in general in the light of the paper [10]. We obtain the local scalar curvature rigidity of bounded domains in hyperbolic spaces. We introduce semaphore codes associated to a Turing machine via resets. Semaphore codes provide an approximation theory for resets. In this paper we generalize the set-up of our previous paper "Random walks on semaphore codes and delay de Bruijn semigroups" to the infinite case by taking the profinite limit of $k$-resets to obtain $(-\omega)$-resets. In this paper, we consider a nonlinear interaction system between the barotropic mode and the first baroclinic mode of the tropical atmosphere with moisture; that was derived in [Frierson, D.M.W.; Majda, A.J.; Pauluis, O.M.: Dynamics of precipitation fronts in the tropical atmosphere: a novel relaxation limit, Commum. Math. Sci., 2 (2004), 591-626.] We establish the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to this system, with initial data in $H^1$, for each fixed convective adjustment relaxation time parameter $\varepsilon>0$. Moreover, if the initial data enjoy slightly more regularity than $H^1$, then the unique strong solution depends continuously on the initial data. Furthermore, by establishing several appropriate $\varepsilon$-independent estimates, we prove that the system converges to a limiting system, as the relaxation time parameter $\varepsilon$ tends to zero, with convergence rate of the order $O(\sqrt\varepsilon)$. Moreover, the limiting system has a unique global strong solution, for any initial data in $H^1$, and such unique strong solution depends continuously on the initial data if the the initial data posses slightly more regularity than $H^1$. Notably, this solves the VISCOUS VERSION of an open problem proposed in the above mentioned paper of Frierson, Majda and Pauluis.

We continue our study of intermediate sums over polyhedra, interpolating between integrals and discrete sums, which were introduced by A. Barvinok [Computing the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational simplex, Math. Comp. 75 (2006), 1449-1466]. By well-known decompositions, it is sufficient to consider the case of affine cones s+c, where s is an arbitrary real vertex and c is a rational polyhedral cone. For a given rational subspace L, we integrate a given polynomial function h over all lattice slices of the affine cone s + c parallel to the subspace L and sum up the integrals. We study these intermediate sums by means of the intermediate generating functions $S^L(s+c)(\xi)$, and expose the bidegree structure in parameters s and $\xi$, which was implicitly used in the algorithms in our papers [Computation of the highest coefficients of weighted Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of rational polyhedra, Found. Comput. Math. 12 (2012), 435-469] and [Intermediate sums on polyhedra: Computation and real Ehrhart theory, Mathematika 59 (2013), 1-22]. The bidegree structure is key to a new proof for the Baldoni--Berline--Vergne approximation theorem for discrete generating functions [Local Euler--Maclaurin expansion of Barvinok valuations and Ehrhart coefficients of rational polytopes, Contemp. Math. 452 (2008), 15-33], using the Fourier analysis with respect to the parameter s and a continuity argument. The arctic circle theorem of Jockusch, Propp, and Shor asserts that uniformly random domino tilings of an Aztec diamond of high order are frozen with asymptotically high probability outside the "arctic circle" inscribed within the diamond. A similar arctic circle phenomenon has been observed in the limiting behavior of random square Young tableaux. In this paper, we show that random domino tilings of the Aztec diamond are asymptotically related to random square Young tableaux in a more refined sense that looks also at the behavior inside the arctic circle. This is done by giving a new derivation of the limiting shape of the height function of a random domino tiling of the Aztec diamond that uses the large-deviation techniques developed for the square Young tableaux problem in a previous paper by Pittel and the author. The solution of the variational problem that arises for domino tilings is almost identical to the solution for the case of square Young tableaux by Pittel and the author. The three-parameter generalized extreme value distribution arises from classical univariate extreme value theory and is in common use for analyzing the far tail of observed phenomena. Curiously, important asymptotic properties of likelihood-based estimation under this standard model have yet to be established. In this paper, for continuous, linearly-controllable quadratic control systems with a single input, an explicit, constructive method is proposed for studying their Brunovsky forms, initially studied in [W. Kang and A. J. Krener, Extended quadratic controller normal form and dynamic state feedback linearization of nonlinear systems, SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, 30:1319-1337, 1992]. In this approach, the computation of Brunovsky forms and transformation matrices and the proof of their existence and uniqueness are carried out simultaneously. In addition, it is shown that quadratic transformations in the aforementioned paper can be simplified to prevent multiplicity in Brunovsky forms. This method is extended for studying discrete quadratic systems. This paper is concerned with certain connections between the ensemble of n x n unitary matrices -- specifically the characteristic function of the random variable tr(U) -- and combinatorics -- specifically Ulam's problem concerning the distribution of the length of the longest increasing subsequence in permutation groups -- and the appearance of Painleve functions in the answers to apparently unrelated questions. Among the results is a representation in terms of a Painleve V function for the characteristic function of tr(U) and (using recent results of Baik, Deift and Johansson) an expression in terms of a Painleve II function for the limiting distribution of the length of the longest increasing subsequence in the hyperoctahedral group., Comment: 21 pages, 1 figure. This paper investigates the large sample properties of local regression distribution estimators, which include a class of boundary adaptive density estimators as a prime example. First, we establish a pointwise Gaussian large sample distributional approximation in a unified way, allowing for both boundary and interior evaluation points simultaneously. Using this result, we study the asymptotic efficiency of the estimators, and show that a carefully crafted minimum distance implementation based on “redundant” regressors can lead to efficiency gains. Second, we establish uniform linearizations and strong approximations for the estimators, and employ these results to construct valid confidence bands. Third, we develop extensions to weighted distributions with estimated weights and to local L 2 estimation. Finally, we illustrate our methods with two applications in program evaluation: counterfactual density testing, and IV specification and heterogeneity density analysis. Computing optimal feedback controls for nonlinear systems generally requires solving Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations, which are notoriously difficult when the state dimension is large. Existing strategies for high-dimensional problems often rely on specific, restrictive problem structures, or are valid only locally around some nominal trajectory. In this paper, we propose a data-driven method to approximate semi-global solutions to HJB equations for general high-dimensional nonlinear systems and compute candidate optimal feedback controls in real-time. To accomplish this, we model solutions to HJB equations with neural networks (NNs) trained on data generated without discretizing the state space. Training is made more effective and data-efficient by leveraging the known physics of the problem and using the partially-trained NN to aid in adaptive data generation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by learning solutions to HJB equations corresponding to the attitude control of a six-dimensional nonlinear rigid body, and nonlinear systems of dimension up to 30 arising from the stabilization of a Burgers'-type partial differential equation. In a prediction tournament, contestants “forecast” by asserting a numerical probability for each of (say) 100 future real-world events. The scoring system is designed so that (regardless of the unknown true probabilities) more accurate forecasters will likely score better. This is true for one-on-one comparisons between contestants. But consider a realistic-size tournament with many contestants, with a range of accuracies. It may seem self-evident that the winner will likely be one of the most accurate forecasters. But, in the setting where the range extends to very accurate forecasters, simulations show this is mathematically false, within a somewhat plausible model. Even outside that setting the winner is less likely than intuition suggests to be one of the handful of best forecasters. Though implicit in recent technical papers, this paradox has apparently not been explicitly pointed out before, though is easily explained. It perhaps has implications for the ongoing IARPA-sponsored research programs involving forecasting.

This paper presents an adaptive randomized algorithm for computing the butterfly factorization of an m × n matrix with m ≈ n provided that both the matrix and its transpose can be rapidly applied to arbitrary vectors. The resulting factorization is composed of O(log n) sparse factors, each containing O(n) nonzero entries. The factorization can be attained using O(n3/2 log n) computation and O(n log n) memory resources. The proposed algorithm can be implemented in parallel and can apply to matrices with strong or weak admissibility conditions arising from surface integral equation solvers as well as multi-frontal-based finite-difference, finite-element, or finite-volume solvers. A distributed-memory parallel implementation of the algorithm demonstrates excellent scaling behavior.

This paper proposes a valid bootstrap‐based distributional approximation for M‐estimators exhibiting a Chernoff (1964)‐type limiting distribution. For estimators of this kind, the standard nonparametric bootstrap is inconsistent. The method proposed herein is based on the nonparametric bootstrap, but restores consistency by altering the shape of the criterion function defining the estimator whose distribution we seek to approximate. This modification leads to a generic and easy‐to‐implement resampling method for inference that is conceptually distinct from other available distributional approximations. We illustrate the applicability of our results with four examples in econometrics and machine learning.

Recent work of the first author, Negut and Rasmussen, and of Oblomkov and Rozansky in the context of Khovanov--Rozansky knot homology produces a family of polynomials in $q$ and $t$ labeled by integer sequences. These polynomials can be expressed as equivariant Euler characteristics of certain line bundles on flag Hilbert schemes. The $q,t$-Catalan numbers and their rational analogues are special cases of this construction. In this paper, we give a purely combinatorial treatment of these polynomials and show that in many cases they have nonnegative integer coefficients. For sequences of length at most 4, we prove that these coefficients enumerate subdiagrams in a certain fixed Young diagram and give an explicit symmetric chain decomposition of the set of such diagrams. This paper investigates the regional gradient controllability for ultra-slow diffusion processes governed by the time fractional diffusion systems with a Hadamard-Caputo time fractional derivative. Some necessary and sufficient conditions on regional gradient exact and approximate controllability are first given and proved in detail. Secondly, we propose an approach on how to calculate the minimum number of $\omega-$strategic actuators. Moreover, the existence, uniqueness and the concrete form of the optimal controller for the system under consideration are presented by employing the Hilbert Uniqueness Method (HUM) among all the admissible ones. In previous work [Adv. Math. 298, pp. 325-368, 2016], the structure of the simultaneous kernels of Hadamard powers of any positive semidefinite matrix were described. Key ingredients in the proof included a novel stratification of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices and a well-known theorem of Hershkowitz, Neumann, and Schneider, which classifies the Hermitian positive semidefinite matrices whose entries are $0$ or $1$ in modulus. In this paper, we show that each of these results extends to a larger class of matrices which we term $3$-PMP (principal minor positive)., Comment: 12 pages. In the 1970s and again in the 1990s, Gromov gave a number of theorems and conjectures motivated by the notion that the real homotopy theory of compact manifolds and simplicial complexes influences the geometry of maps between them. The main technical result of this paper supports this intuition: we show that maps of differential algebras are closely shadowed, in a technical sense, by maps between the corresponding spaces. As a concrete application, we prove the following conjecture of Gromov: if $X$ and $Y$ are finite complexes with $Y$ simply connected, then there are constants $C(X,Y)$ and $p(X,Y)$ such that any two homotopic $L$-Lipschitz maps have a $C(L+1)^p$-Lipschitz homotopy (and if one of the maps is a constant, $p$ can be taken to be $2$.) This paper deals with the non-convex power system state estimation (PSSE) problem, which plays a central role in the monitoring and operation of electric power networks. Given a set of noisy measurements, PSSE aims at estimating the vector of complex voltages at all buses of the network. This is a challenging task due to the inherent nonlinearity of power flows, for which existing methods lack guaranteed convergence and theoretical analysis. Motivating by these limitations, we propose a novel convexification framework for the PSSE using semidefinite programming (SDP) and second-order cone programming (SOCP) relaxations. We first study a related power flow (PF) problem as the noiseless counterpart, which is cast as a constrained minimization program by adding a suitably designed objective function. We study the performance of the proposed framework in the case where the set of measurements includes: (i) nodal voltage magnitudes, and (ii) branch active power flows over a spanning tree of the network. It is shown that the SDP and SOCP relaxations both recover the true PF solution as long as the voltage angle difference across each line of the network is not too large (e.g., less than 90 degrees for lossless networks). By capitalizing on this result, penalized SDP and SOCP problems are designed to solve the PSSE, where a penalty based on the weighted least absolute value is incorporated for fitting noisy measurements with possible bad data. Strong theoretical results are derived to quantify the optimal solution of the penalized SDP problem, which is shown to possess a dominant rank-one component formed by lifting the true voltage vector. This paper studies the matrix completion problem under arbitrary sampling schemes. We propose a new estimator incorporating both max-norm and nuclear-norm regularization, based on which we can conduct efficient low-rank matrix recovery using a random subset of entries observed with additive noise under general non-uniform and unknown sampling distributions. This method significantly relaxes the uniform sampling assumption imposed for the widely used nuclear-norm penalized approach, and makes low-rank matrix recovery feasible in more practical settings. Theoretically, we prove that the proposed estimator achieves fast rates of convergence under different settings. Computationally, we propose an alternating direction method of multipliers algorithm to efficiently compute the estimator, which bridges a gap between theory and practice of machine learning methods with max-norm regularization. Complex interactions between entities are often represented as edges in a network. In practice, the network is often constructed from noisy measurements and inevitably contains some errors. In this paper we consider the problem of estimating a network from multiple noisy observations where edges of the original network are recorded with both false positives and false negatives. This problem is motivated by neuroimaging applications where brain networks of a group of patients with a particular brain condition could be viewed as noisy versions of an unobserved true network corresponding to the disease. The key to optimally leveraging these multiple observations is to take advantage of network structure, and here we focus on the case where the true network contains communities. Communities are common in real networks in general and in particular are believed to be presented in brain networks. Under a community structure assumption on the truth, we derive an efficient method to estimate the noise levels and the original network, with theoretical guarantees on the convergence of our estimates. We show on synthetic networks that the performance of our method is close to an oracle method using the true parameter values, and apply our method to fMRI brain data, demonstrating that it constructs stable and plausible estimates of the population network.

Locally Optimal Block Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient (LOBPCG) is widely used to compute eigenvalues of large sparse symmetric matrices. The algorithm can suffer from numerical instability if it is not implemented with care. This is especially problematic when the number of eigenpairs to be computed is relatively large. In this paper we propose an improved basis selection strategy based on earlier work by Hetmaniuk and Lehoucq as well as a robust convergence criterion which is backward stable to enhance the robustness. We also suggest several algorithmic optimizations that improve performance of practical LOBPCG implementations. Numerical examples confirm that our approach consistently and significantly outperforms previous competing approaches in both stability and speed.

Motivated by water-wave problems, in this paper we consider a class of nonlinear dispersive PDEs in 2D with cubic nonlinearities, whose dispersion relations are radial and have vanishing Guassian curvature on a circle. For such a model we identify certain null structures for the cubic nonlinearity, which suffice in order to guarantee global scattering solutions for the small data problem. Our null structures in the power-type nonlinearity are weak, and only eliminate the worst nonlinear interaction. Such null structures arise naturally in some water-wave problems., Comment: 28 pages

In [2], the authors develop a global correspondence between immersed weakly horospherically convex hypersurfaces $\phi:M^n \to \mathbb{H}^{n+1}$ and a class of conformal metrics on domains of the round sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$. Some of the key aspects of the correspondence and its consequences have dimensional restrictions $n\geq3$ due to the reliance on an analytic proposition from [5] concerning the asymptotic behavior of conformal factors of conformal metrics on domains of $\mathbb{S}^n$. In this paper, we prove a new lemma about the asymptotic behavior of a functional combining the gradient of the conformal factor and itself, which allows us to extend the global correspondence and embeddedness theorems of [2] to all dimensions $n\geq2$ in a unified way. In the case of a single point boundary $\partial_{\infty}\phi(M)=\{x\} \subset \mathbb{S}^n$, we improve these results in one direction. As an immediate consequence of this improvement and the work on elliptic problems in [2], we have a new, stronger Bernstein type theorem. Many physical systems are composed of polyhedral cells of varying sizes and shapes. These structures are simple in the sense that no more than three faces meet at an edge and no more than four edges meet at a vertex. This means that individual cells can usually be considered as simple, three-dimensional polyhedra. This paper is concerned with determining the distribution of combinatorial types of such polyhedral cells. We introduce the terms \emph{fundamental} and \emph{vertex-truncated} types and apply these concepts to the grain growth microstructure as a testing ground. For these microstructures we demonstrate that most grains are of particular fundamental types, whereas the frequency of vertex-truncated types decreases exponentially with the number of truncations. This can be explained by the evolutionary process through which grain growth structures are formed, and in which energetically unfavorable surfaces are quickly eliminated. Furthermore, we observe that these grain types are `round' in a combinatorial sense: there are no `short' separating cycles that partition the polyhedra into two parts of similar sizes. A particular microstructure derived from the Poisson--Voronoi initial condition is identified as containing an unusually large proportion of round grains. In this paper we introduce a finite-parameters feedback control algorithm for stabilizing solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Voigt equations, the strongly damped nonlinear wave equations and the nonlinear wave equation with nonlinear damping term, the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers equation and the KdV-Burgers equation. This algorithm capitalizes on the fact that such infinite-dimensional dissipative dynamical systems posses finite-dimensional long-time behavior which is represented by, for instance, the finitely many determining parameters of their long-time dynamics, such as determining Fourier modes, determining volume elements, determining nodes , etc..The algorithm utilizes these finite parameters in the form of feedback control to stabilize the relevant solutions. For the sake of clarity, and in order to fix ideas, we focus in this work on the case of low Fourier modes feedback controller, however, our results and tools are equally valid for using other feedback controllers employing other spatial coarse mesh interpolants.

The catenary degree is an invariant that measures the distance between factorisations of elements within an atomic monoid. In this paper, we classify which finite subsets of$\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$occur as the set of catenary degrees of a numerical monoid (that is, a co-finite, additive submonoid of$\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$). In particular, we show that, with one exception, every finite subset of$\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$that can possibly occur as the set of catenary degrees of some atomic monoid is actually achieved by a numerical monoid.

This paper considers the problem of testing the equality of two unspecified distributions. The classical omnibus tests such as the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Cram\`er-von Mises are known to suffer from low power against essentially all but location-scale alternatives. We propose a new two-sample test that modifies the Neyman's smooth test and extend it to the multivariate case based on the idea of projection pursue. The asymptotic null property of the test and its power against local alternatives are studied. The multiplier bootstrap method is employed to compute the critical value of the multivariate test. We establish validity of the bootstrap approximation in the case where the dimension is allowed to grow with the sample size. Numerical studies show that the new testing procedures perform well even for small sample sizes and are powerful in detecting local features or high-frequency components., Comment: 40 pages, 3 figures

Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms play an important role in statistical inference problems dealing with intractable probability distributions. Recently, many MCMC algorithms such as Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (HMC) and Riemannian Manifold HMC have been proposed to provide distant proposals with high acceptance rate. These algorithms, however, tend to be computationally intensive which could limit their usefulness, especially for big data problems due to repetitive evaluations of functions and statistical quantities that depend on the data. This issue occurs in many statistic computing problems. In this paper, we propose a novel strategy that exploits smoothness (regularity) in parameter space to improve computational efficiency of MCMC algorithms. When evaluation of functions or statistical quantities are needed at a point in parameter space, interpolation from precomputed values or previous computed values is used. More specifically, we focus on HMC algorithms that use geometric information for faster exploration of probability distributions. Our proposed method is based on precomputing the required geometric information on a set of grids before running sampling algorithm and approximating the geometric information for the current location of the sampler using the precomputed information at nearby grids at each iteration of HMC. Sparse grid interpolation method is used for high dimensional problems. Tests on computational examples are shown to illustrate the advantages of our method.

In this paper we prove uniform regularity estimates for the normalized Gauss curvature flow in higher dimensions. The convergence of solutions in $C^\infty$-topology to a smooth strictly convex soliton as $t$ approaches to infinity is obtained as a consequence of these estimates together with an earlier result of Andrews. The estimates are established via the study of a new entropy functional for the flow.

Consider a finite system of rank-based competing Brownian particles, where the drift and diffusion of each particle depend only on its current rank relative to other particles. We present a simple sufficient condition for absence of multiple collisions of a given order, continuing the earlier work by Bruggeman and Sarantsev (2015). We consider the Fibonacci Hamiltonian, the central model in the study of electronic properties of one-dimensional quasicrystals, and provide a detailed description of its spectrum and spectral characteristics (namely, the optimal H\"older exponent of the integrated density of states, the dimension of the density of states measure, the dimension of the spectrum, and the upper transport exponent) for all values of the coupling constant (in contrast to all previous quantitative results, which could be established only in the regime of small or large coupling). In particular, we show that the spectrum of this operator is a dynamically defined Cantor set and that the density of states measure is exact-dimensional; this implies that all standard fractal dimensions coincide in each case. We show that all the gaps of the spectrum allowed by the gap labeling theorem are open for all values of the coupling constant. Also, we establish strict inequalities between the four spectral characteristics in question, and provide the exact large coupling asymptotics of the dimension of the density of states measure (for the other three quantities, the large coupling asymptotics were known before). A crucial ingredient of the paper is the relation between spectral properties of the Fibonacci Hamiltonian and dynamical properties of the Fibonacci trace map (such as dimensional characteristics of the non-wandering hyperbolic set and its measure of maximal entropy as well as other equilibrium measures, topological entropy, multipliers of periodic orbits). We establish exact identities relating the spectral and dynamical quantities, and show the connection between the spectral quantities and the thermodynamic pressure function., Comment: 47 pages

The $\ell_1$-synthesis model and the $\ell_1$-analysis model recover structured signals from their undersampled measurements. The solution of former is a sparse sum of dictionary atoms, and that of the latter makes sparse correlations with dictionary atoms. This paper addresses the question: when can we trust these models to recover specific signals? We answer the question with a condition that is both necessary and sufficient to guarantee the recovery to be unique and exact and, in presence of measurement noise, to be robust. The condition is one--for--all in the sense that it applies to both of the $\ell_1$-synthesis and $\ell_1$-analysis models, to both of their constrained and unconstrained formulations, and to both the exact recovery and robust recovery cases. Furthermore, a convex infinity--norm program is introduced for numerically verifying the condition. Those in turn have been used to study homogeneity of Riemannian and Finsler quotient manifolds. Almost all of that work has been done for group manifolds or, more generally, for symmetric spaces. This paper extends the scope of research on constant length Killing vector fields to a class of Riemannian normal homogeneous spaces.

Frege's theorem says that second-order Peano arithmetic is interpretable in Hume's Principle and full impredicative comprehension. Hume's Principle is one example of an abstraction principle, while another paradigmatic example is Basic Law V from Frege's Grundgesetze. In this paper we study the strength of abstraction principles in the presence of predicative restrictions on the comprehension schema, and in particular we study a predicative Fregean theory which contains all the abstraction principles whose underlying equivalence relations can be proven to be equivalence relations in a weak background second-order logic. The Immersed Boundary method is a simple, efficient, and robust numerical scheme for solving PDE in general domains, yet it only achieves first-order spatial accuracy near embedded boundaries. In this paper, we introduce a new high-order numerical method which we call the Immersed Boundary Smooth Extension (IBSE) method. The IBSE method achieves high-order accuracy by smoothly extending the unknown solution of the PDE from a given smooth domain to a larger computational domain, enabling the use of simple Cartesian-grid discretizations (e.g. Fourier spectral methods). The method preserves much of the flexibility and robustness of the original IB method. In particular, it requires minimal geometric information to describe the boundary and relies only on convolution with regularized delta-functions to communicate information between the computational grid and the boundary. We present a fast algorithm for solving elliptic equations, which forms the basis for simple, high-order implicit-time methods for parabolic PDE and implicit-explicit methods for related nonlinear PDE. We apply the IBSE method to solve the Poisson, heat, Burgers', and Fitzhugh-Nagumo equations, and demonstrate fourth-order pointwise convergence for Dirichlet problems and third-order pointwise convergence for Neumann problems.

We consider the problem of sparse coding, where each sample consists of a sparse linear combination of a set of dictionary atoms, and the task is to learn both the dictionary elements and the mixing coefficients. Alternating minimization is a popular heuristic for sparse coding, where the dictionary and the coefficients are estimated in alternate steps, keeping the other fixed. Typically, the coefficients are estimated via $\ell_1$ minimization, keeping the dictionary fixed, and the dictionary is estimated through least squares, keeping the coefficients fixed. In this paper, we establish local linear convergence for this variant of alternating minimization and establish that the basin of attraction for the global optimum (corresponding to the true dictionary and the coefficients) is $\order{1/s^2}$, where $s$ is the sparsity level in each sample and the dictionary satisfies RIP. Combined with the recent results of approximate dictionary estimation, this yields provable guarantees for exact recovery of both the dictionary elements and the coefficients, when the dictionary elements are incoherent., Comment: Local linear convergence now holds under RIP and also more general restricted eigenvalue conditions

Fast algorithms for matrix multiplication, namely those that perform asymptotically fewer scalar operations than the classical algorithm, have been considered primarily of theoretical interest. Apart from Strassen's original algorithm, few fast algorithms have been efficiently implemented or used in practical applications. However, there exist many practical alternatives to Strassen's algorithm with varying performance and numerical properties. Fast algorithms are known to be numerically stable, but because their error bounds are slightly weaker than the classical algorithm, they are not used even in cases where they provide a performance benefit. We argue in this paper that the numerical sacrifice of fast algorithms, particularly for the typical use cases of practical algorithms, is not prohibitive, and we explore ways to improve the accuracy both theoretically and empirically. The numerical accuracy of fast matrix multiplication depends on properties of the algorithm and of the input matrices, and we consider both contributions independently. We generalize and tighten previous error analyses of fast algorithms and compare their properties. We discuss algorithmic techniques for improving the error guarantees from two perspectives: manipulating the algorithms, and reducing input anomalies by various forms of diagonal scaling. Finally, we benchmark performance and demonstrate our improved numerical accuracy.

In a recent paper we found conditions for a nilpotent Lie group $N$ to have a filtration by normal subgroups whose successive quotients have square integrable representations, and such that these square integrable representations fit together nicely to give an explicit construction of Plancherel almost all representations of $N$. That resulted in explicit character formulae, Plancherel formulae and multiplicity formulae. We also showed that nilradicals $N$ of minimal parabolic subgroups $P = MAN$ enjoy that "stepwise square integrable" property. Here we extend those results to direct limits of stepwise square integrable nilpotent Lie groups. This involves some development of the corresponding Schwartz spaces. The main result is an explicit Fourier inversion formula for that class of infinite dimensional Lie groups. Many physical systems are described by nonlinear differential equations that are too complicated to solve in full. A natural way to proceed is to divide the variables into those that are of direct interest and those that are not, formulate solvable approximate equations for the variables of greater interest, and use data and statistical methods to account for the impact of the other variables. In the present paper the problem is considered in a fully discrete-time setting, which simplifies both the analysis of the data and the numerical algorithms. The resulting time series are identified by a NARMAX (nonlinear autoregression moving average with exogenous input) representation familiar from engineering practice. The connections with the Mori-Zwanzig formalism of statistical physics are discussed, as well as an application to the Lorenz 96 system., 12 page, includes 2 figures
