Abstract

Benchmarking is a performance improvement and good quality practice technique that has been increasingly drawing the attention of various disciplines. A number of large corporations have adopted benchmarking in undertaking performance comparisons, among them Xerox Corp, Motorola, AT&T Corp and General Motors. Benchmarking is simply defined as a process of continuous comparison of a company's performance on customer requirements against that of the best in an industry or a class. By adopting the best practices, a company will be able to meet or even surpass the benchmarking standard, thus, leading to continuous improvement. Useful benchmarking techniques and a benchmarking process model are presented. Pointers for organizations conducting a benchmarking project for the first time are also given.

Modeling of firms employing world class manufacturing (WCM) reveals that poor performance levels of one firm compared with another is due to product and process complexity and that strategies differ for the two firms. Findings reveal that the results vary strongly from previous studies, and the reasons for the different efficiency scores from the benchmarking exercise are analysed.
