The present study aims to increase knowledge about coping with legal abortion by studying women's reasoning, reactions and emotions over a period of 1 year. The study comprises interviews focusing on the experiences and effects of abortion in 58 women, 4 and 12 months after the abortion. The women also answered a questionnaire before the abortion concerning their living conditions, decision-making process and feelings about the pregnancy and the abortion. Majority of the women did not experience any emotional distress post-abortion and almost all the woman reported that they had coped well at the 1-year follow-up, although 12 had had severe emotional distress directly post-abortion. Furthermore, almost all described the abortion as a relief or a form of taking responsibility and more than half reported only positive experiences such as mental growth and maturity of the abortion process. Those without any emotional distress post-abortion stated clearly before the abortion that they did not want to give birth since they prioritised work, studies and/or existing children. The study shows that women generally are able to make the complex decision to have an abortion without suffering any subsequent regret or negative effects, as ascertained at the 1-year follow-up. A study was conducted to test Reiss' hypotheses of the effects of social and cultural variables on absorption attitudes. Empirical findings indicate the importance of education, gender-role attitudes, fundamentalist beliefs, and childbearing motivation in predicting attitudes toward abortion.

In the Maputo Central Hospital 103 women undergoing induced legal abortion (LA), 103 women with confirmed, recent illegal abortion (IA), and 100 randomly recruited antenatal clinic (AC) attenders were compared in order to find characteristic features regarding obstetric history, reproductive performance and contraceptive knowledge, attitude and practice. Women with IA were younger, had almost never undergone LA, had more often their first sexual intercourse and their first pregnancy below 20 years of age, had less knowledge of contraceptives and more often had never used contraceptives, had fewer previous spontaneous abortions and fewer previous stillbirths than LA women. There were three maternal deaths, all in the IA group. The most frequent illegal abortionist was a health worker (38%). It is concluded that, in this first comparative African study on IA and LA regarding reproductive profile and post-abortion health consequences, the former are at a disadvantage regarding early unprotected sexual intercourse with first pregnancy at a young age and with almost no experience of safe, legal abortion. A study of abortion from a crosscultural standpoint is necessary to present varied experiences of women in countries with different ideologies on human fertility and sexuality and laws regulating access to contraceptives. It is ironical that in most research work, first-hand accounts from the main actors in the issue, who are the women themselves, are not presented. It is therefore imperative for future studies to correct this oversight.

Two folk medical conditions, 'delayed' (atrasada) and 'suspended' (suspendida) menstruation, are described as perceived by poor Brazilian women in Northeast Brazil. Culturally prescribed methods to 'regulate' these conditions and provoke menstrual bleeding are also described, including ingesting herbal remedies, patent drugs, and modern pharmaceuticals. The ingestion of such self-administered remedies is facilitated by the cognitive ambiguity, euphemisms, folklore, etc., which surround conception and gestation. The authors argue that the ethnomedical conditions of 'delayed' and 'suspended' menstruation and subsequent menstrual regulation are part of the 'hidden reproductive transcript' of poor and powerless Brazilian women. Through popular culture, they voice their collective dissent to the official, public opinion about the illegality and immorality of induced abortion and the chronic lack of family planning services in Northeast Brazil. While many health professionals consider women's explanations of menstrual regulation as a 'cover-up' for self-induced abortions, such popular justifications may represent either an unconscious or artful manipulation of hegemonic, anti-abortion ideology expressed in prudent, unobtrusive and veiled ways. The development of safer abortion alternatives should consider women's hidden reproductive transcripts. Key words - induced abortion, menstrual regulation, popular medicine, Northeast Brazil
