Surfactants are among the most common PPCPs that reach coastal systems, being often used in large quantities in cleaning products such as detergents and soap powders. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is listed in this group of emerging contaminants. Previous studies have already demonstrated the presence of SLS in aquatic environments and the negative effects on organisms living there. However, with ocean acidification and warming predictions, SLS-induced impacts may differ from those currently known. In this context, the present study aimed to reproduce environmental conditions by assessing the release of substances over a short period and to understand the influence of a rapid increase in temperature on the impacts caused. The marine bivalve Mytilus galloprovincialis was exposed to 2.0 mg/L SLS at 17 °C and 21 °C for 7 days. To assess the possible biochemical changes resulting from the exposure of mussels to SLS, a series of biomarkers related to oxidative stress/damage, detoxification, and metabolic capacity were measured. The SLS accumulation in soft tissues was low (about 0.7 ng/g) at both temperatures. The results evidenced increased metabolic activity, especially in mussels exposed to SLS at 17 °C. An increase in protein content was also observed upon exposure to SLS and increased temperature compared to controls at 17 °C. Although no effects on antioxidant enzymes were observed, protein damage was recorded, especially at 21 °C. Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are continuously dispersed into the environment, as a result of human and veterinary use, reaching aquatic coastal systems and inhabiting organisms. However, information regarding to toxic effects of these compounds towards marine invertebrates is still scarce, especially in what regards to metabolic capacity and oxidative status alterations induced in bivalves after chronic exposure. In the present study, the toxic impacts of Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), an anionic surfactant widely used as an emulsifying cleaning agent in household and cosmetics, were evaluated in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, after exposure for 28 days to different concentrations (0.0; 0.5; 1.0; 2.0 and 4.0 mg/L). For this, effects on mussels respitation rate, metabolic capacity and oxidative status were evaluated. The obtained results indicate a significant decrease on mussel's respiration rate after exposure to different SLS concentrations, an alteration that was accompanied by a decrease of bioconcentration factor along the increasing exposure gradient, especially at the highest exposure concentration. Nonetheless, the amount of SLS accumulated in organisms originated alterations in mussel's metabolic performance, with higher metabolic capacity up to 2.0 mg/L followed by a decrease at the highest tested concentration (4.0 mg/L). Mussels exposed to SLS revealed limited antioxidant defense mecanhisms but cellular damage was only observed at the highest exposure concentration (4.0 mg/L). In fact, up to 2.0 mg/L of SLS limited toxic impacts were observed, namely in terms of oxidative stress and redox balance. However, since mussel's respiration rate was greatly affected by the presence of SLS, the present study may highlight the potential threat of SLS towards marine bivalves, limiting their filtration capacity and, thus, affecting their global physiological development (including growth and reproduction) and ultimely their biochemical performance (afecting their defense capacity towards stressful conditons)., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest None., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. The importance of trace elements in ecotoxicological investigations is a well-known issue when monitoring polluted areas such as commercial harbors. Copper represents one of the most common metal contaminants, often detected in these areas as it is widely employed in various fields and has many sources of inflow in the marine environment. Pachygrapsus marmoratus is a widespread intertidal crab species that has been extensively studied in ecology, ethology and population genetics. Ecotoxicological studies have also been performed, exclusively on the adult stage. In the present study we investigated the mortality and biochemical (oxidative stress and neurotoxicity) responses of P. marmoratus larvae exposure to environmental relevant concentration of copper. Results showed dose-dependent responses in terms of larval mortality, with a calculated LC 50 value of 0.5 mg/L of Cu 2+ . The LC 50 concentration was used as the starting point for subsequent biochemical response evaluation. Results also demonstrated dose-dependent activation of antioxidant systems assuming a compensatory antioxidant activity to prevent higher cellular damage when larvae were exposed to the highest concentrations of copper. The widespread use of Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been increasing exponentially, leading to a significant potential release into the environment. Nevertheless, the toxic effects of CNTs in natural aquatic systems are related to their ability to interact with abiotic compounds. Considering that salinity variations are one of the main challenges in the environment and thus may influence the behavior and toxicity of CNTs, a laboratory experiment was performed exposing the tube-building polychaete Diopatra neapolitana (Delle Chiaje 1841) for 28 days to pristine multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs) and carboxylated MWCNTs, maintained at control salinity 28 and low salinity 21. An innovative approach based on thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was adopted for the first time to assess the presence of MWCNTs aggregates in the organisms. Both CNTs generated toxic impacts in terms of regenerative capacity, energy reserves and metabolic capacity as well as oxidative and neuro status, however greater toxic impacts were observed in polychaetes exposed to carboxylated MWCNTs. Moreover, both CNTs maintained under control salinity (28) generated higher toxic impacts in the polychaetes compared to individuals maintained under low salinity (21), indicating that exposed polychaetes tend to be more sensitive to the alteration induced by salinity variations on the chemical behavior of both MWCNTs in comparison to salt stress., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Graphene oxide (GO) is an important carbon nanomaterial (NM) that has been used, but limited literature is available regarding the impacts induced in aquatic organisms by this pollutant and, in particular in invertebrate species. The polychaete Diopatra neapolitana has frequently been used to evaluate the effects of environmental disturbances in estuarine systems due to its ecological and socio-economic importance but to our knowledge no information is available on D. neapolitana physiological and biochemical alterations due to GO exposure. Thus, the present study aimed to assess the toxic effects of different concentrations of GO (0.01; 0.10 and 1.00mg/L) in D. neapolitana physiological (regenerative capacity) and biochemical (energy reserves, metabolic activity and oxidative stress related biomarkers) performance, after 28days of exposure. The results obtained revealed that the exposure to GO induced negative effects on the regenerative capacity of D. neapolitana, with organisms exposed to higher concentrations regenerating less segments and taking longer periods to completely regenerate. GO also seemed to alter energy-related responses, especially glycogen content, with higher values in polychaetes exposed to GO which may result from a decreased metabolism (measured by electron transport system activity), when exposed to GO. Cholinesterases of Diopatra neapolitana were characterized for their activity in whole body and different body segments (apical, intermediate, posterior), substrate affinity (acetyl-, butyryl-, propionylthiocholine), kinetic parameters (K m and V max ) and in vitro response to model inhibitors (eserine hemisulfate, isoOMPA, BW284C51) and carbamates (carbofuran, methomyl, aldicarb and carbaryl). Results showed that the rate of hydrolysis for acetyl- and propionylthiocholine was higher in the posterior segment than the apical/intermediate segments and whole body. Cholinesterases of D. neapolitana showed a substrate preference for acetylthiocholine followed by propionylthiocholine; butyrylthioline was poorly hydrolyzed indicating, together with the absence of inhibition by the specific inhibitor and the absence of reactive bands in native electrophoresis, a lack of an active butyrylcholinesterase, differently than that observed in other Annelida species. The degree of inhibition by selected carbamates of cholinesterase activity with propionylthiocholine as substrate was higher than that observed with ATChI-ChE activity; aldicarb showed the highest inhibitory effect., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. The effect of beta-naphthoflavone (beta-NF) on several catalytic activities of cytochrome P450 (CYP) and phase II enzymes putatively controlled by [Ah]-receptor activation in the liver, heart and kidney of gilthead seabream, was investigated. In the liver, beta-NF treatment [intraperitoneal injection (i.p.) 50 mg/kg] resulted in an increase of CYP content, immunoreactive CYP 1A and methoxyresorufin-O-demethylase (MEROD), pentoxyresorufin O-depentylase (PROD) and ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activities. However, beta-NF had no effect on any of the hepatic phase II enzymes examined (benzaldehyde dehydrogenase, propionaldehyde dehydrogenase, glutathione S-transferase, UDP-glucuronyl-transferase, DT-diaphorase). Single i.p. injection of 10 mg/kg beta-NF showed a maximal induction of CYP 1A-like protein and EROD activity after 3-7 days. CYP 1A and EROD returned to control levels 18-days post-treatment. beta-NF injection also caused a rapid increase of a single band size of mRNA recognized by a CYP 1A1 cDNA fragment from sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Expression of mRNA preceded the increase of EROD activity and declined rapidly by 96 h. Dose-response experiments demonstrated that EROD was significantly enhanced in liver by a single injection of 0.3 mg/kg beta-NF and was the most sensitive measurement for CYP 1A-like induction. beta-NF treatments also increased the expression of CYP 1A-like protein, mRNA and EROD, but not MEROD and PROD activities in heart and kidney.
