Introduction: This study assessed quit attempts among adults who use cigarettes either exclusively or with e-cigarettes in Mexico, where non-daily smoking predominates., Methods: An open cohort of Mexican adults who smoke was surveyed every four months from November 2018 to March 2021. Participants followed to the next survey were analyzed (n = 2220 individuals, 4560 observations). Multinomial logistic models regressed smoking quit attempts reported at the followup survey (ref = no attempt; tried to quit; sustained attempt of ≥30 days) on e-cigarette use frequency (none = ref; 1-2 days/week; ≥3 days/week), adjusting for sociodemographics and smoking-related variables. Additional models subdivided e-cigarette users by intentions to quit smoking in the next six months (i.e., yes/no), use of nicotine (i.e., yes/no), and vaping device used (i.e., open/closed)., Results: At 4-month follow-up, 32.7 % had tried to quit, and 2.9 % had quit for 30 days or more. Compared to those who smoke exclusively, occasional, and frequent e-cigarette users were more likely to try to quit (Adjusted Relative Risk Ratio or ARRR = 1.26 and 1.66, respectively) but no more likely to sustain their quit attempt. Among those who intended to quit smoking, e-cigarette users were no more likely to either try or sustain quit attempts. Furthermore, use of e-cigarettes with nicotine (59.6 %) was unassociated with cessation except that those who frequently used e-cigarettes with nicotine were more likely to try to quit than those who smoke exclusively (ARRR = 1.88). Background: Elder abuse (EA), depressive symptoms, and loneliness represent a growing risk to the health, well-being, and premature mortality of older adults. However, the role of loneliness in the relationship between EA and depressive symptoms has not yet been examined., Aims: To investigate the associations between these constructs and to explore the possible mediating role of loneliness in the relationship between EA and depressive symptoms in a representative sample of older Mexican people., Methods: A representative community-dwelling survey of older adults aged 60 and older was conducted in two cities in Mexico (Mexico City and Xalapa) in 2018-2019. Measurements of EA, loneliness, depressive symptoms, health, and sociodemographic data were collected. Regression and mediation models were tested to analyze the associations between these variables., Results: The prevalence of EA was 16.3%, loneliness was 50%, and depressive symptoms were 25.5%. The odds ratio (OR) for the occurrence of depressive symptoms was 2.7 when the combined effects of EA and loneliness were considered. The proportion of the effect that could explain the mediating role of loneliness was 31%., Conclusion: To effectively reduce depressive symptoms in older individuals affected by emotional or psychological abuse and neglect, it is crucial to address both the mediating influence of loneliness and EA itself in therapeutic and preventive interventions., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). Background: The study of dietary patterns in older adults (OA) and their association with geriatric syndromes (GS) is scarce in Latin America., Objective: To describe the association of dietary patterns with GS in the Mexican older adult population, using data from the 2018-19 National Health and Nutrition Survey., Methods: Dietary data were collected from 3,511 adults (≥60 years of age, both sexes) using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Dietary patterns were derived by principal component analysis based on the consumption of 162 foods from 24 food groups. The GS studied were: frailty, depressive symptoms (DS), low appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM); additionally, we studied inflammation (serum CRP>5 mg/L). Logistic regression models were used., Results: Four major dietary patterns were identified: a) "Western", b) "Prudent", c) "Soups", and d) "Traditional". The middle and higher tertiles of the "Prudent" pattern were associated with lower odds of DS (OR 0.71, p = 0.04; and OR 0.61, p = 0.008), respectively. The second tertile of the "Soups" pattern was associated with lower odds of low ASMM (OR 0.68, p = 0031) and inflammation (OR 0.58, p = 0.022). The highest tertile of the "Traditional" pattern was associated with low ASMM (OR 1.55, p = 0.008) and lower odds of inflammation (OR 0.69, p = 0.044). No association was found between the "Western" dietary pattern and GS., Conclusions: Three of four major dietary patterns were associated with GS in older Mexican adults. Purpose: There is no intervention that quickly reduces a person's blood alcohol content (BAC). "Sober up before you drive" may prevent road traffic injury (RTI) caused by alcohol consumption. The aim of this study was to analyze the risk of RTI on an hourly basis (1-6 h) after the last drink and the determinants of this risk., Methods: This was a case-crossover study of alcohol consumption among 430 patients who suffered an RTI and arrived at an emergency department in a large hospital in Mexico City from January to April 2022., Results: Of the 430 patients studied, 46 reported drinking within 1 h before the RTI, for a risk ratio (RR) of 7.7 (95% CI [5.6, 10.4]). This RR decreased to 2.2 (95% CI [1.3, 3.7]) for the 12 patients drinking in the second hour before the RTI and was null for those drinking earlier (p ≤ 0.001 for the trend). The induction time was 3 h among those with higher BAC and intoxication levels. The RR for an RTI decreases 71% from the first to second hour from the last drink and 32% from the second to third hour. This decrease was similar among those intoxicated and those with increased BACs. In multiple regression models, higher levels of intoxication and higher BACs remained associated with higher RRs., Discussion: People should avoid driving after drinking. Aim: To evaluate the progress of the Mexican Institute of Social Security Recovery Policy (IMSS-RP) in addressing the decline in essential health services caused by the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: We analyzed eleven indicators of essential health services from 35 IMSS state delegations. The assessment included ambulatory and hospital care indicators such as breast and cervical cancer screening, family medicine, dental and specialty visits, diabetes and hypertension visits and health outcomes, deliveries, and elective surgeries. We analyzed the period before (January 2018-March 2021) and during (April 2021-June 2023) the implementation of the IMSS-RP. Statistical analysis to determine the association of the policy with service indicators and the change in their trends included an interrupted time series analysis and Poisson Generalized Estimating Equation models., Results: The volume of services showed substantial declines during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, reaching between 11 and 81% of pre-pandemic levels. All services increased significantly during the first 27 months of the IMSS-RP implementation; specialty visits, cervical and breast cancer screening, and diabetes control exceeded pre-pandemic levels (103%,112%,103%, and 138%, respectively). However, only deliveries and the percentage of patients with controlled diabetes and hypertension showed a stable increase following the IMSS-RP implementation, whereas the remaining services showed an initial increase but began to decrease over time., Conclusions: After 27 months of implementation, IMSS-RP achieved progress in increasing the volume of essential health services and improving chronic disease control. Background: Telomere length (TL) shortening has been identified as a marker of aging and associated with adverse health outcomes, but evidence of its association with sarcopenia is inconclusive., Aims: Estimate the cross-sectional and prospective associations between TL and sarcopenia., Methods: We used data from Waves 3 and 4 (2017, 2021) of the Study on Global Aging and Adult Health in Mexico (SAGE-Mexico). The cross-sectional sample consisted of 1,738 adults aged 50 and older, and the longitudinal sample consisted of 1,437. Relative TL was determined by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) on DNA extracted from saliva samples and quantified as the telomere/single-copy gene (T/S) ratio. Sarcopenia was defined according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2)., Results: The mean salivary TL was 1.50 T/S units (95% CI: 1.49-1.52). The baseline prevalence of sarcopenia was 13.3% (95% CI: 9.8-16.8%). The incidence and persistence of sarcopenia were 6.8% (95% CI: 5.0-9.5%) and 7.0% (95% CI: 5.1-9.6%), respectively. The results showed that a one standard deviation decrease in TL was cross-sectionally associated with higher odds of sarcopenia (OR = 1.31; 95% CI: 1.03-1.67) and prospectively with a higher incidence (RRR = 1.55; 95% CI: 1.06-2.25) and persistence (RRR = 1.50; 95% CI: 1.01-2.24) of sarcopenia., Conclusions: Older adults with shorter TL had higher rates of incident and persistent sarcopenia. Implementation of interventions to delay the decline of TL in older adults is warranted. Introduction: Huntington's disease (HD) is a genetic neurodegenerative disorder with dominant inheritance. Our center in Mexico City has offered presymptomatic testing (PT) since 1995., Objective: To describe the main clinical and demographic characteristics of at-risk HD individuals who applied to the PT program, the reasons for seeking it, and the molecular results., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with sociodemographic and clinical data of all PT applicants from 1995-2023. Reasons for seeking PT were assessed using a modified questionnaire. In addition, anxiety, and depressive symptoms before and after PT were evaluated with Beck's instruments; cognitive impairment (CI) was assessed with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and molecular results., Results: 214 people applied for PT (2.1% of the at-risk population identified in our center); 63% were women (mean age of 37.11 years). 204 (95.3%) were accepted and 190 received results. 70% indicated that the main reason for applying for PT was to inform their offspring about the risk of inheriting HD. Significant differences were observed in the reasons for seeking PT by age group. Although some subjects received treatment, Beck's instrument scores did not indicate special attention or pharmacological treatment. The MMSE showed probable CI in 20 subjects. Of those who received results, 37% were carriers of a full penetrance allele., Conclusion: Our center has the only formal PT program for HD in Mexico. Objective: To evaluate the associations of pre-gestational body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG) with the risks of overweight, obesity, and adiposity in the first seven years of life in the offspring of a cohort of pregnant women., Methods: Analysis of 751 mothers and their children participating in the PROGRESS cohort. These women were recruited in Mexico City between 2007 and 2010. Pre-gestational BMI was classified as normal, overweight, and obesity according to the WHO. GWG was calculated as the difference between the last reported pre-pregnancy weight and the pre-gestational weight and categorized as inadequate, adequate, or excessive, according to US IOM recommendations. Children's anthropometry was evaluated at 4-5 and 6-7 years of age. Adiposity was classified into three groups: normal (BMI z-score and waist circumference), overweight (BMI z-score>1), and overweight plus abdominal obesity (OW+AO). A generalized structural equation model (GSEM) was constructed to account for the temporal relationship between variables and to assess direct and indirect effects., Results: A total of 49.3% of the women had excessive (13.8 ± 4.2 kg) and 19.8% inadequate (3.15 ± 3.4 kg) GWG. Women with pre-gestational overweight or obesity were more likely to have excessive GWG (OR 1.9 [95% CI: 1.32, 2.74] and 3.50 [95% CI: 1.83, 6.69], respectively). In the GSEM, excessive GWG was directly associated with OW+AO at 4-5 years. Objective: Estimate COVID-19 vaccine booster uptake and identify sociodemographic profiles associated with vaccine booster uptake in Mexican adults aged 60 and older., Methods: Using data from the 2022 National Health and Nutrition Survey, we estimated COVID-19 booster uptake in Mexican adults 60 and older. We conducted a latent class analysis using sociodemographic characteristics and then estimated group-specific booster prevalence., Results: Adults aged 60 and older with a completed vaccination schedule had 80.3% booster coverage. Background and Aims: Vitamin D deficiency is a global health problem. The determinants of this deficiency have not been evaluated in developing countries such as Mexico. Thus, this study aimed to determine vitamin D intake and sun exposure and its relationship with plasma concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D -25(OH)D- in young adults from Mexico City., Methods: One hundred fifty five urban adult subjects were enrolled during 2017 and 2018. Sociodemographic, anthropometric, and clinical data, vitamin D intake, and sun exposure habits were collected. Plasma concentrations of 25(OH)D were also determined., Results: The proportion of vitamin D deficiency was significantly higher in women than in men (65.7 vs. 43.4%, p = 0.012). The overall median dietary vitamin D intake was 112 IU/d (less than 20% of the recommended daily intake; RDI). 25-hydroxyvitamin D correlated directly with vitamin D intake, sun exposure score, waist-to-hip ratio, and age; an inverse significant association was found with body fat percentage. A multiple regression analysis was performed; simultaneous and significant (p <0.01) effects of sun exposure score, dietary vitamin D, the season of the year (spring-summer vs. fall-winter), and age were observed on 25(OH)D levels., Conclusion: High rates of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency were observed in young adults from Mexico City. According to the RDI of this vitamin, its consumption, assessed by a 24 h multi-step nutritional questionnaire, was significantly low. A linear multiple regression model identified several predictors of plasma 25(OH)D concentrations. Introduction: In Mexico, familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is underdiagnosed, but population screening in small communities where at least one homozygous patient has already been detected results in a useful and inexpensive approach to reduce this problem. Considering that we previously reported nine homozygous cases from the state of Oaxaca, we decided to perform a population screening to identify patients with FH and to describe both their biochemical and genetic characteristics., Methods: LDL cholesterol (LDLc) was quantified in 2,093 individuals from 11 communities in Oaxaca; either adults with LDLc levels ≥170 mg/dL or children with LDLc ≥130 mg/dL were classified as suggestive of FH and therefore included in the genetic study. LDLR and APOB (547bp fragment of exon 26) genes were screened by sequencing and MLPA analysis., Results: Two hundred and five individuals had suggestive FH, with a mean LDLc of 223 ± 54 mg/dL (range: 131-383 mg/dL). Two pathogenic variants in the LDLR gene were detected in 149 individuals: c.-139&#95;-130del (n = 1) and c.2271del (n = 148). All patients had a heterozygous genotype. With the cascade screening of their relatives (n = 177), 15 heterozygous individuals for the c.2271del variant were identified, presenting a mean LDLc of 133 ± 35 mg/dL (range: 60-168 mg/dL)., Conclusions: The FH frequency in this study was 7.8% (164/2093), the highest reported worldwide. Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the main causes of death and disability worldwide. The etiology of CVD is often associated with multiple risk factors, with environmental factors receiving considerable attention. Individuals with precarious jobs are among the groups most affected by chronic exposure to environmental pollutants., Aim: This study aimed to evaluate occupational exposure to heavy metals among individuals in precarious job settings and investigate atherogenic indices as biomarkers of cardiovascular risk., Methods: A total of 137 workers participated in this cross-sectional study conducted in three work environments in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Urine and blood samples were collected to assess metal exposure and biochemical profiles, including atherogenic indices., Results: The results showed that workers in the brick sector exhibited the highest levels of metal exposure, particularly arsenic (44.06 µg/L), followed by stonecutters and garbage collectors (24.7 and 16.9 µg/L, respectively). Introduction: Thrombosis is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Venous thromboembolic disease (VTD) is considered a new epidemic. FXII deficiency is supposed to be a cause of thrombosis. To search for unknown causes of thrombosis in our population, our aim was to determine if FXII deficiency can be considered a risk factor for VTD., Methods: Young adult Mexican patients with at least one VTD episode and healthy controls were included in this prospective, observational, controlled study. Liver and renal function tests, blood cytometry, and blood coagulation assays were performed. Plasma FXII activity and its concentration were evaluated., Results: Over a two-year period, 250 patients and 250 controls were included. FXII activity was significantly lower in the control group compared to patients with VTD (p = 0.005). However, percentage of patients and controls with FXII deficiency was 8.8 and 9.2%, respectively (p = 1.000). No significant association was found between FXII deficiency and VTD (p = 1.0). FXII plasma concentration was lower in controls vs. patients with VTD: 4.05 vs. 6.19 ng/mL (p <0.001). Percentage of patients with low FXII plasma concentration was 1.6% and 6.0% in patients and controls, respectively (p = 0.010)., Conclusions: FXII deficiency is a frequent finding in patients with VTD and controls in Mexico. Background: The national immunization program in Mexico includes a 3-dose primary series of pertussis vaccine and a toddler booster dose. In Mexico, whole-cell pertussis vaccines (wP) were switched in 2007 to acellular pertussis vaccines (aP)., Methods: This retrospective study using Mexican National Databases of Health and population surveillance (2000-2019) assessed the incidence of pertussis, infant pertussis vaccination coverage, and vaccine effectiveness (VE) against clinically-diagnosed and/or laboratory-confirmed pertussis in children aged 6.5-18.5 or 24.5 months for the primary series, and children aged 18.5 or 24.5-48.5 months for the toddler booster., Results: The incidence of pertussis sharply increased in 2012 and was highest in 2012, 2015, and 2016 (0.84-0.94/100,000 person-years). Coverage was highest for the first dose in the primary series, decreasing for each subsequent dose. There are no studies that have utilized both biomarkers and self-reported data to evaluate maternal alcohol use during pregnancy in Mexico. Therefore, we aimed to describe the prevalence of alcohol consumption in a cohort of 300 Mexican pregnant women. We used a validated ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method to measure hair ethyl glucuronide (EtG) in hair segments that corresponded to the first and second half of pregnancy. We compared the hair EtG values to a self-reported questionnaire on maternal drinking habits and evaluated whether the gestational alcohol use was associated with psychotropic drug use. Based on the EtG measurements, 263 women (87.7%) were alcohol-abstinent during the entire pregnancy, while 37 (12.3%) had used alcohol at least once during the pregnancy. Of these, only two women were found to have problematic alcoholic behavior during the entire pregnancy. No significant differences in sociodemographic characteristics were observed between alcohol-abstinent women and women with drinking habits. The self-reporting data and hair EtG gave heterogeneous results: although 37 women had self-reported alcohol use during pregnancy, only 54.1% of these women tested positive for hair EtG. Of the women who tested positive for hair EtG, 54.1% tested positive for psychoactive substances. In our cohort, the use of drugs of abuse was independent of gestational drinking. Trypanosoma cruzi is the parasite responsible for Chagas disease. The parasite has been classified into six taxonomic assemblages: TcI-TcVI and TcBat (aka Discrete Typing Units or Near-Clades). No studies have focused on describing the genetic diversity of T. cruzi in the northwestern region of Mexico. Within the Baja California peninsula lives Dipetalogaster maxima, the largest vector species for CD. The study aimed to describe the genetic diversity of T. cruzi within D. maxima. A total of three Discrete Typing Units (DTUs) were found (TcI, TcIV, and TcIV-USA). TcI was the predominant DTU found (∼75% of samples), in concordance with studies from the southern USA, one sample was described as TcIV while the other ∼20% pertained to TcIV-USA, which has recently been proposed to have enough genetic divergence from TcIV, to merit its own DTU. Background: Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) is one of the anthropometric measures associated with cardiovascular risk (CVR). However, WHtR cut-off points may vary depending according to population characteristics, including sex and height., Objective: To identify optimal WHtR cut-off points to predict CVR factors by sex in Mexican adults according to height., Material and Methods: Information from adults >20 years (n = 3550) from the 2016 National Health and Nutrition Survey were analyzed. Prevalence of high WHtR, CVR factors (glucose and insulin, lipid profile (total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides) and blood pressure were estimated by sex and height (short height <1.60 and <1.50 m in men and women, respectively). The maximum proximity procedure was used to establish the point of maximum simultaneous sensitivity and specificity using the operating characteristic curve of the receiver. The estimates were stratified by sex and height condition., Results: The WHtR cut-off points identified to predict CVR were higher than those suggested for international use (≥0.5), being significantly higher (p <0.0001) for women (0.61) than for men (0.56). Background: Clinically Isolated Syndrome (CIS) is the first clinical episode suggestive of Clinical Definite Multiple Sclerosis (CDMS). There are no reports on possible predictors of conversion to CDMS in Mexican mestizo patients., Aim of the Study: To investigate immunological markers, clinical and paraclinical findings, and the presence of herpesvirus DNA to predict the transition from CIS to CDMS in Mexican patients., Methods: A single-center prospective cohort study was conducted with newly diagnosed patients with CIS in Mexico between 2006 and 2010. Clinical information, immunophenotype, serum cytokines, anti-myelin protein immunoglobulins, and herpes viral DNA were determined at the time of diagnosis., Results: 273 patients diagnosed with CIS met the enrolment criteria; after 10 years of follow-up, 46% met the 2010 McDonald criteria for CDMS. Baseline parameters associated with conversion to CDMS were motor symptoms, multifocal syndromes, and alterations of somatosensory evoked potentials. The presence of at least one lesion on magnetic resonance imaging was the main factor associated with an increased risk of conversion to CDMS (RR 15.52, 95% CI 3.96-60.79, p = 0.000). Patients who converted to CDMS showed a significantly lower percentage of circulating regulatory T cells, cytotoxic T cells, and B cells, and the conversion to CDMS was associated with the presence of varicella-zoster virus and herpes simplex virus 1 DNA in cerebrospinal fluid and blood., Conclusion: There is scarce evidence in Mexico regarding the demographic and clinical aspects of CIS and CDMS. Background: Urinary tract infections (UTI) are one of the most common pathologies in Mexico and the majority are caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). UPEC possesses virulence and resistance determinants that promote UTI development and affect diagnosis and treatment. This study aims to systematically review published reports of virulence genes, antibiotic resistance, and phylogenetic groups prevalent in clinical isolates of UPEC in the Mexican population., Methods: Systematic review with meta-analysis was performed following PRISMA guidelines. Articles in both English and Spanish were included. Total prevalence with a 95% confidence interval of each characteristic was calculated. Heterogeneity between studies and geographical areas was assessed by the Cochran Q test (Q), I-square (I 2 ), and H-square (H 2 ). Egger's test was used for risk of bias in publications and asymmetry evaluations., Results: Forty-two articles were analyzed. The most prevalent virulence genes were ecp (97.25%; n = 364) and fimH (82.34%; n = 1,422), which are associated with lower UTI, followed by papGII (40.98%; n = 810), fliC (38.87%; n = 319), hlyA (23.55%; n = 1,521), responsible for with upper UTI. More than 78.13% (n = 1,893) of the isolates were classified as multidrug-resistant, with a higher prevalence of resistance to those antibiotics that are implemented in the basic regimen in Mexico. Background: According to the International Diabetes Federation, Mexico is seventh place in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) worldwide. Mitochondrial DNA variant association studies in multifactorial diseases like T2D are scarce in Mexican populations., Aim of the Study: The objective of this study was to analyze the association between 18 variants in the mtDNA control region and T2D and related metabolic traits in a Mexican mestizo population from Mexico City., Methods: This study included 1001 participants divided into 477 cases with T2D and 524 healthy controls aged between 42 and 62 years and 18 mtDNA variants with frequencies >15%., Results: Association analyses matched by age and sex showed differences in the distribution between cases and controls for variants m.315&#95;316insC (p = 1.18 × 10 -6 ), m.489T>C (p = 0.009), m.16362T>C (p = 0.001), and m.16519T>C (p = 0.004). Background: Cancer registries are essential for monitoring cancer burden and patterns, and document changes in time for cancer control. Hereby, we present the first results of four years of the Merida population-based cancer registry in Mexico., Methods: The registry collects data on all new cancers diagnosed since 2015 using both active and passive methods including a total of 104 information sources. Definitions and coding follow international standards. Using CanReg5 software, age-standardized incidence rates (ASR/100,000 person years) were computed by direct method using the world standard population., Results: A total of 5684 new cancer cases were registered during 2015-2018, 2321 in males and 3363 in females corresponding to age-adjusted incidence rates (ASR per 100,000) of 128.5, and 153.1, respectively. Most frequent cancers among males were prostate cancer (ASR 29.8), lymphomas (ASR 10.9) and colorectal cancer (ASR 9.7) while among females it was breast cancer (ASR 49.3), cervical cancer (ASR 17.5) and corpus uteri (ASR 11.5). Childhood cancers (0-14 year) represented 2.9% of all cancers, with leukemias accounting for 52% of the new cases. Overall, 87.6% of new cases were microscopically verified., Conclusions: The data reported provide information on the cancer profile in Merida. Prostate and breast cancer are the main incident cancers. Cervical cancers present high rates among women, while lymphomas and liver cancer data merit further exploration. Background and Aim: An association between lead (Pb) exposure and antisocial behaviors has been documented, but findings have been inconclusive. We aimed to estimate the association between prenatal, early childhood, and preadolescent/adolescent (periadolescent) Pb exposure and aggression and conduct problems in periadolescent residents of Mexico City., Methods: Using information from the ELEMENT cohort study, we assessed prenatal Pb exposure through maternal patella Pb (MPPb) measurement during the puerperium, early childhood (birth to 5 years of age) exposure through a cumulative blood lead index (CBLI), and periadolescent exposure through a blood Pb (BPb) measurement concurrent with the evaluation of the outcomes. Outcomes were assessed during periadolescence using the parent-reported scales of aggression and conduct problems of the Behavioral Assessment System for Children-2nd version (BASC-2). We modeled the association between Pb exposure at each stage and each outcome (defined as a T-score ≥60 in the corresponding behavioral scale) using logistic regression, adjusting for sex, maternal age at delivery, maternal education, and household socioeconomic status (SES). The differential effect by sex was assessed with an interaction term in the models., Results: 743, 704, and 595 participants were respectively eligible for inclusion in final models of prenatal, early childhood, and periadolescent Pb exposure. Median Pb exposure at each stage was 9.9 µg/g for MPPb (prenatal), 5.19 µg/dl for CBLI (early childhood), and 2.62 µg/dl for concurrent BPb (periadolescence). 12 % of participants met the criterion for aggression, and 15 % for conduct problems. In adjusted models, a one interquartile range increase in MPPb increased the odds of conduct problems (OR:1.31; 95 % CI: 1.01, 1.70) and aggression (OR=1.24; 95 % CI: 0.93, 1.65) during periadolescence. Pb exposure during early childhood or periadolescence was not associated with either outcome. Background: The true prevalence of Chagas disease in Mexico is unknown. However, it has been estimated that 1.1-4 million people are infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, which represents a potential risk for transmission of the disease via contaminated blood., Aim of the Study: To determine the Chagas disease seroprevalence in donors from eight blood banks in the north of Mexico City, and the northeast of the State of Mexico., Study Design and Methods: Serum samples from blood donors (n = 515,038) were tested to detect the presence of anti-Trypanosoma cruzi antibodies in eight blood banks. The serologic screening test was performed in each of the blood banks. To confirm the seropositive blood donors, only two out of the eight blood banks used a test with a different principle with the aim of identifying anti-Trypanosoma cruzi antibodies. All tests were validated by the Mexican Institute for Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference., Results: One thousand two hundred and ten blood donors were seropositive for Trypanosoma cruzi, which represents a 0.23% seroprevalence (95% CI 0.22-0.25%). Objective: To investigate national temporal trends over time in mortality rates in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) in Mexico between 1998 and 2017., Methods: Deaths between 1998 and 2017 were extracted from General Board of Health Information (DGIS) Open Access datasets. 2We identified all persons aged ≥15 years with a diagnosis of SSc (ICD-10 code M34). We calculated the age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) for SSc and non-SSc (information provided by the National Institute of Statistics, Geography, and Informatics). A Joinpoint regression model was used to determine mortality trends by sex and geographic regions. Annual percentage change (APC) and average APC (AAPC) were calculated using Joinpoint analysis., Results: From 1998 to 2017, the overall ASMR of SSc increased (AAPC = 2.5%), whereas the ASMR for non-SSc remained stable. By subpopulations, females, and males with SSc had a significant uptrend in the ASMR (APC = 4.6 and 4.4%, respectively), between 1998 and 2008 for the former and between 1998 and 2010 for the later. Females had a non-significant ASMR uptrend between 2008 and 2017 and males a non-significant ASMR decline between 2010 and 2017. Women had a higher SSc-ASMR to non-SSc-ASMR ratio than males. The relative cumulative change between 1998 and 2017 differed between females (78.1%) and males (50.8%), and residents of the Southern region had the largest cumulative change (147.8%)., Conclusions: SSc mortality rate increased in Mexico between 1998 to 2017, with SSc mortality higher than non-SSc mortality. However, the SSc mortality rate steeply increased in the first ten years but has plateaued in the last 10 years of the study period. Breast cancer (BC) is the leading cancer worldwide among women. "Prudent" dietary patterns have been consistently and negatively associated with the risk of BC. However, prospective studies have shown a positive association between "Western" dietary patterns and the risk of BC, but only among postmenopausal women. In this regard, evidence from Latin America is scarce. Our aim was to assess the hypothesis that 2 dietary patterns (Western or prudent) were contrastingly associated with BC in pre- and postmenopausal women from Northern Mexico. We recruited 1045 BC incident cases and 1030 age matched (±5 years) population controls. Sociodemographic, reproductive, and dietary characteristics were obtained by direct interviews. We used a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire to obtain information about diet 1 year before diagnosis for cases and 1 year before the interview for controls. Dietary patterns were identified through factor analysis. A Western-like pattern, which was mainly determined by positive loads in red and processed meats and foods rich in fats and sugars, was positively associated with BC both in pre- (odds ratio [OR] =23.47; 95% CI, 14.01-36.96) and in postmenopausal women (OR = 18.85; 95% CI, 13.74-25.87). In contrast, a prudent-like pattern, which was characterized by positive loads of vegetables, legumes, and corn, was negatively associated with pre- (OR = 0.35; 95% CI, 0.26-0.49) and postmenopausal BC (OR = 0.25; 95% CI, 0.19-0.32). Introduction: SARS-CoV-2 continues to have a high rate of contagion worldwide. The new variant of concern, Omicron, has mutations that decrease the effectiveness of vaccines and evade antibodies from previous infections resulting in a fourth wave of the pandemic. It was identified in Mexico in December 2021., Methods: The Traveler's Preventive Care Clinic from the Faculty of Medicine UNAM at Mexico City International Airport has performed rapid antigen and PCR SARS CoV2 tests since January 2021 to comply with the new travel requirements. Demographic and clinical characteristics were collected from each passenger and the fourth wave of the pandemic in Mexico mainly caused by Omicron was analyzed in the travelers., Results: A total of 5176 travelers attended the clinic between the second half of December 2021 and January 2022. Ten percent of all the tests performed were positive (13% of PCR and 9.3% of antigens, p = 0.001). Most of the SARS CoV2 positive cases were asymptomatic (78%), with a ratio of 3.5:1 over the symptomatic. By age groups, this ratio was higher for those under 20 years old (8.7:1)., Discussion: This study shows the rapid escalation of positivity that occurred in Mexico, detected in travelers, from the second half of December 2020 and throughout the month of January 2021. Rickettsial diseases have seen a re-emergence in the Americas in the last few decades, with concerning morbidity, mortality and economic implications that result from loss of productivity, income, curbs in liberal trade agreements, and reduction in agricultural practices. The aim of this study is to determine the socioecological determinants and seroprevalence for Rickettsia typhi and Rickettsia rickettsii among residents of Teabo, a rural community of Yucatán, Mexico. Sociodemographic data and serum samples were obtained from 180 consenting participants. Antibody titers for R. typhi and R. rickettsii were determined by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Participants also submitted tick samples collected from their residential area. We conducted logistic regression models to evaluate the association between exposure variables and seroprevalence. Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. (37%; n = 65), and Amblyomma cajennense Fabricius (17%; n = 29) were the predominant tick species in peri-domestic areas. Out of the 180 participants, there was significantly higher seroprevalence of R. typhi (n = 77; 46%) compared to R. rickettsii [n = 27, 15%, (p < 0.05)]. Pearson's chi-square test of independence revealed significant differences in R. rickettsii seroprevalence by gender (X 2 [n = 175, df = 4, (p < 0.001)] = 180.26), level of education, (X 2 [n = 180, df = 4, (p < 0.001)] = 44.0), and by tick species found in residential area, (X 2 [n = 180, df = 4, (p = 0.050)] = 9.48). After adjusting for other variables in a logistic regression model, for each unit increase in the number of dogs present in the residential area, there was a 27% increase in the odds of human seroprevalence for R. typhi IgG (AOR = 1.27, 95% CI: 1.01-1.63). Compared to study participants living in residential areas with a 'low' height of vegetation, those living in residential areas with a 'medium' height of vegetation had 2.5 times greater odds of human seroprevalence for R. typhi IgG (AOR = 2.51, 95% CI: 1.19-5.40). Potentially modifiable existing factors in the peri-domestic area may constitute a high-risk source of seroprevalence for rickettsial antibodies among residents of the rural community of Teabo, Yucatán, Mexico., (Copyright © 2022 The Author(s). Aim: We aimed at performing a situation analysis to identify challenges that Mexico's peritoneal dialysis centers (PDCs) have faced before and during the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: From May-August 2021, we conducted a cross-sectional nationwide online survey with the heads of 136 PDCs at the Mexican Institute of Social Security. The survey gathered information about PDCs characteristics and the adaptations and challenges they faced before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The response rate to the survey was 79.5% (136 out of 171 PDCs). We used descriptive statistics to analyze the data., Results: The survey responses suggest wide variations between PDCs regarding their number of patients, healthcare staff availability, and compliance with the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis recommendations. In the pre-pandemic period, PDCs faced staff shortages (71.3%); scarcity of supplies (39.0%); catheter dysfunctions (29.4%); poor patient adherence to peritoneal dialysis (PD) (28.6%); and lack of patient support networks (25.7%). During the pandemic, PDCs faced emergent challenges, such as losing designated PDC areas within hospitals (61.0%), and staff and supply shortages (60.2%, 41.1%, respectively) because of a reallocation of human and physical resources towards the COVID-19 response. The pandemic prompted 86.7% of PDCs to implement preventive public health measures, delay non-urgent consultations and procedures (63.6%), and introduce telemedicine (37.3%). Background: Urinary Stone Disease (USD) arises from an interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Urinary metabolic abnormalities are well described as risk factors. In Mexico, the Maya region holds the highest prevalence of USD. Treatment of these abnormalities lowers the risk of recurrences., Aim: Assess the underlying metabolic abnormalities of patients with USD to provide a rationale to lead further prevention strategies., Methods: Clinical and demographical data from patients coming to the Stone Clinic were prospectively collected along with a 24 h urinary panel to identify metabolic abnormalities. All participants signed consent and the study was approved by the hospital's institutional review board., Results: A total of 126 patients were included, with a mean age of 47.2 ± 13 years, 75.4% were female. A positive family history of stones was observed in 40 and 87.3% were overweight/obese. The frequency of hypocitraturia, hypercalciuria, hypomagnesuria, hyperoxaluria, and hyperuricosuria was 91.3, 68.5, 42.1, 36.5, and 26.6%, respectively. Median urinary citrate was 79.5 (37.5-160) mg/24 h and was inversely correlated to glycemia. Urine Calcium/Creatinine index was correlated with Hounsfield units (HU) (p = 0.01). Oxalate was correlated with HU and stone burden. Interestingly, dietary distribution of macro- and micronutrients were similar between groups. Introduction: Modeling studies have estimated the potential impact and cost effectiveness of interventions to reduce obesity; few have focused on their equity across socioeconomic groups. This study aims to compare the equitability of individual- and population-level interventions to reduce obesity in Mexico., Methods: Mathematical models were implemented to estimate the expected effect of 2 sugar-sweetened beverage tax scenarios (10% and 20%) and bariatric surgery, pharmacotherapy, and dietary advice as individual interventions to reduce body weight. Individual interventions were modeled using meta-analytical weight change, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the probability of access to healthcare services. For the tax, investigators obtained the baseline consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages from the National Health Survey 2012 and applied the reduction in sales observed in 2016 to estimate the caloric change and weight reduction. Implementation costs and cost per person, per kilogram, and equity were calculated for all interventions over a 1-year timeframe., Results: The 20% tax produced the largest estimated increase (4.50%) in normal BMI prevalence, was the most cost effective, and had the largest and most equitable decrease in obesity across socioeconomic categories. Pharmacotherapy and bariatric surgery produced sizable decreases in obesity prevalence (3.68% and 1.18%), particularly among the middle and high socioeconomic groups, whereas dietary advice had the lowest impact on normal and obese categories., Conclusions: Individual interventions were effective in reducing obesity; yet, they were more expensive and less equitable than population interventions. Background: Over the previous two decades, the lifetime prevalence of cannabis use has risen among Mexico's population., Aims: Estimate the sex- and age-specific rates of onset of cannabis use over time., Design: Five nationally representative cross-sectional surveys, the Mexican National Surveys of Addictions (1998, 2002, 2008, 2012) and the Mexican National Survey on Drugs, Alcohol, and Tobacco Consumption (2016)., Setting: Mexico., Participants: Pooled sample of 141,342 respondents aged between 12 and 65 years of which 43.6%(n = 61,658) are male and 56.4% (n = 79,684) are female., Measurements: We estimated the age-specific rates of onset of cannabis as the conditional rate of consuming cannabis for the first time at a specific age., Methods: Time-to-event flexible-parametric models with spline specifications of the hazard function. Stratified analysis by sex and control for temporal trends by year of data collection or decennial birth cohort., Findings: Age-specific rates of onset of cannabis use per 1,000 individuals increased over time for females and males. Peak rates of onset of cannabis use per 1,000 ranged from 0.935 (95%CI = [0.772, 1.148]) in 1998, to 5.391 (95%CI = [4.924, 5.971]) in 2016 for females; and from 7.513 (95%CI = [6.732, 10.063]) in 1998, to 26.107 (95%CI = [25.918,30.654]) in 2016 for males. Across decennial birth-cohorts, peak rates of onset of cannabis use per 1,000 individuals for females ranged from 0.234 (95%CI = [0.078, 0.768]) for those born in the 1930s, to 14.611 (95%CI = [13.243, 16.102]) for those born in the 1990s; and for males, from 4.086 (95%CI = [4.022, 7.857]) for those born in the 1930s, to 38.693 (95%CI = [24.847, 48.670]) for those born in the 1990s., Conclusion: Rates of onset of cannabis increased over the previous two decades for both females and males but remained higher for males. Aim of the Study: To examine mortality trends in children under 15 years of age due to HIV/AIDS in Mexico and describe their differences by insurance coverage., Methods: Time series analysis of deaths from 1990-2019 through a Bayesian poisson regression model with linear splines and knots in 1994, 1997, and 2003., Results: Overall, we observed a reduction in the mortality rate due to HIV from 2003 onwards, except in the group of 10-14 years. In the population covered with Social Security, mortality rates decreased in all age groups. However, in the group without Social Security or with Popular Security (subsidized system), mortality rates significantly decreased only for children below 5 years. of age., Conclusions: Health insurance through the contributory system is associated with faster and larger reductions in HIV related infant mortality. Background: Low vaccination rates and under-detection of pertussis infections in adolescents and young adults have an impact on the transmission of pertussis to infants. In this study, the proportion of adolescents and young adults with IgG antibodies against B. pertussis antigens, representing recent infection or vaccination, was estimated in a population-based probabilistic survey in Mexico., Methods: Sera and data from 1,581 subjects, including 1,102 adolescents and 479 young adults (10-19 and 20-25 years old, respectively) randomly selected from Mexico's 2012 National Health and Nutrition Survey, were analyzed. IgG antibodies against pertussis toxin (PT) were measured with the CDC/FDA ELISA. A subset of 234 samples was additionally tested with Bp-IgG PT ELISA kit (EUROIMMUN AG, Lubeck, Germany). Threshold values from corresponding test kits were used to identify recent infection or vaccination., Results: Overall anti-PT IgG seroprevalence was 3.9% (95% CI: 2.3-6.3); 3.1% (95% CI: 1.9-5.0) in adolescents, and 4.9% (95% CI: 2.2-11) in young adults. Seroprevalence did not significantly vary by sex, socioeconomic status, region or rural/urban location. Compared to the CDC/FDA ELISA, the EUROIMMUN test showed a 76% sensitivity and 88% specificity. The weighted estimates represent a considerable burden of recent infection in adolescents and young adults; however, most adolescents and adults were seronegative and, therefore, susceptible to pertussis infection., Conclusion: Since booster vaccination to B. pertussis after toddlerhood is not recommended in the Mexican national policy, anti-PT IgG seropositivity may be reasonably attributed to recent infection. Study Objective: To identify factors associated with having an abortion (spontaneous or induced) at the time of first pregnancy, and to test the association between abortion in the first pregnancy and the number of live births among young women 20-24 years of age., Design: Cross-sectional study., Setting: We used a nationally representative survey of Mexican women 20-24 years of age with data at time of survey and retrospective measures of exposures in adolescence. We include 1913 women who reported ever having a pregnancy., Main Outcomes: Our outcomes were history of abortion (spontaneous or induced) and number of live births by 20-24 years of age. We used multivariable logistic regression models to estimate the association between sociodemographic factors at the time of pregnancy and abortion history, and between abortion history and number of live births., Results: Among women 20-24 years of age who ever had a pregnancy, 15.5% reported an abortion in the first pregnancy, and 84.4% never had an abortion. Among women who had an abortion in the first pregnancy, 62.3% did not report any live birth by age 20-24 years. Young women living with their parents (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.87; confidence interval [CI] = 1.16-3.02) or with a partner with a higher educational level (AOR = 4.64; CI = 1.05-20.44) had greater odds of having an abortion in the first pregnancy. Compared with women who never had an abortion, women who reported an abortion in the first pregnancy had lower odds (AOR = 0.02; CI = 0.01-0.03) of having 1 or more children by the age of 20-24 years., Conclusion: Young women who reported abortion in the first pregnancy had fewer live births at ages 20-24 years compared to women with no history of abortion., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Sarcopenia is a common condition in older people and increasing evidence suggests that it can be considered as a potential risk factor for falls and fractures. However, no studies on this topic from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are available. Thus, we assessed this association among older adults from five LMICs (China, India, Ghana, Mexico, and Russia). Community-based, nationally representative, cross-sectional data of the Study on Global Aging and Adult Health were analyzed. Sarcopenia was defined as the presence of low skeletal muscle mass based on indirect population formula, and either slow gait or low handgrip strength. The presence of fall-related injury was ascertained through self-reported information. Multivariable logistic regression analysis and meta-analysis were conducted. The sample consisted of 13,101 individuals aged ≥65 years (mean (SD) age 72.6 (11.3) years; 45% males). The prevalence of fall-related injury was higher among those with sarcopenia than in those without this condition (e.g., Mexico 9.8% vs. 2.7%). Adjusted analyses showed that sarcopenia was associated with a 1.85 (95%CI = 1.24-2.77) times higher odds for fall-related injury, with a low level of between-country heterogeneity. This paper considers whether the COVID-19 stay-at-home order affected crimes targeting women. To answer this question, we use national municipal-level crime data from Mexico's National Public Security System. The NPSS reports sexual crimes, lapses in alimony, domestic violence, and femicides. Using the NPSS, we track monthly changes in crimes targeting women using an event-study design. Our results show that lapses in alimony, sexual crimes, and domestic violence follow a U-shaped trend. Each crime declined during the stay-at-home order, and then rose back to pre-COVID levels by October. Then, we analyze potential mechanisms for the reduction in crimes against women. Introduction: Pertussis is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by Bordetella pertussis and a leading cause of infant mortality in Mexico. The Tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine was recommended in the Mexican Immunisation Programme for pregnant women in 2013. We describe pertussis morbidity and mortality trends in infants ≤2 and ≤12 months of age), before and after maternal Tdap immunisation implementation in Mexico., Methods: An ecological retrospective database study was performed in the Mexican National and Workers Social Security Institutes (IMSS; ISSSTE). Data were collected on confirmed pertussis ambulatory cases, hospitalisations, and deaths, plus vaccination coverage (Tdap; Diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis [DTPa]) and population estimates. Descriptive and regression time-trend analyses were performed for pertussis morbidity and mortality in infants between pre- (2010-2012) and post- (2014-2018) maternal Tdap immunisation periods., Results: Around 1 million infants a year are covered in IMSS/ISSSTE databases. Average full primary infant DTPa vaccine coverage was 71.4%-72.7% nationally. Since 2013, annual maternal Tdap vaccine coverage ranged from 70%-93%. Between 2010-2018, 2,024 pertussis cases, 2,518 hospitalisations and 71 deaths were reported in infants. Among infants 0-2 months old (maternal immunisation target group), there was a significant decrease, post-maternal vaccination, in pertussis incidence (49.9%, p < 0.000), hospitalisation (70.0%, p < 0.000) and mortality (82.4%, p = 0.003). In infants 0-12 months old, pertussis hospitalisations (28.9%, p = 0.000) and mortality (36.2%, p = 0.059) decreased, but incidence increased (61.8%, p = 0.000)., Conclusion: After maternal immunisation was implemented, there was a decreasing trend in incidence, hospitalisation and death due to pertussis in infants 0-2 months old. Increases in incidence reported in 0-12-month-olds are likely due to major changes in diagnosis and reporting introduced during the study period as well as limited vaccination and health coverage in some states. Objectives: There is a scarcity of data on the association between mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and falls, especially from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where 70% of all older adults reside. Thus, we investigated the association between MCI and fall-related injury among older adults residing in six LMICs (China, Ghana, India, Mexico, Russia, South Africa)., Design: Cross-sectional, community-based data from the WHO Study on global AGEing and adult health (SAGE) were analyzed., Methods: The definition of MCI was based on the National Institute on Ageing-Alzheimer's Association criteria, and information on past 12-month fall-related injury was also collected. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess associations., Results: The analytical sample consisted of 13,623 individuals aged ≥65 years [mean (SD) age 72.3 (10.9) years; 45.6% males]. The prevalence of fall-related injury was higher among those with MCI (6.3%) vs. no MCI (4.1%). After adjustment for potential confounders, MCI was associated with a 1.53 (95%CI = 1.12-2.07) times higher odds for fall-related injury., Conclusions: MCI was associated with higher odds for fall-related injury among older adults in LMICs. Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) can produce a fatal multisystem disease in carnivores and other mammals and is an important threat for wildlife conservation. However, integrative and comparative studies in wild carnivores are scarce and some areas of the world lack of genetic studies. We explore the dynamic of host-CDV in a procyonid community during an outbreak. This study reports for the first time an index case occurred in a common raccoon (Procyon lotor) and for which a complete CDV diagnosis was performed. The long-term epidemiological analysis in two sympatric populations of common raccoons and white-nosed coatis (Nasua narica) was achieved through seroneutralization, RT-PCR and direct immunofluorescence assays. Additionally, hematologic analyses were performed and phylogenetic reconstruction of CDV was done using molecular data from this study. Overall prevalence for white-nosed coatis was 19.6 % and for common raccoons was 25.3 % by seroneutralization, and 13.3 % and 17.3 % by RT-PCR. Antibodies titer average for white-nosed coatis was 1:512 and 1:156 for common raccoons. Significant difference in prevalence between white-nosed coatis and common raccoons was detected during one season (summer 2013). White-nosed coatis showed differences in erythrocytes and monocytes counts between positives and negative animals. A 100 % similarity was found between CDV of white-nosed coati and CDV of common raccoon and is a new CDV sequence not previously described; this sequence is close to Asian and European lineage. An endemic state of distemper in both species was observed but showed different dynamics over time per host species. Differences in cellular and humoral responses were also detected between procyonids. The evidence found here may have serious implications for CDV understanding in wild carnivores, it reveals clear differences in the response over time to the same CDV strain, in two close related carnivore species., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Variation and clade shifts in dengue virus (DENV) genotypes are responsible for numerous dengue fever outbreaks throughout Latin America in the past decade. Molecular analyses of dengue serotypes have revealed extensive genetic diversification and the emergence of new genotypes in Brazil (DENV-4 genotype I) and elsewhere in tropical and subtropical America. The goal of the present study is to assess the extent to which the adventitious introduction of DENV genotypes and their increasing genetic diversity affects dengue epidemiology in Mexico. A nuanced sequence inspection and phylogenetic analysis of the C-prM nucleotide region of DENV was performed for specimens collecting in 2009 from the Veracruz State, Mexico. Findings were contrasted with specimens collected in adjacent years and analysed based on the epidemiological patterns reported between 1990 and 2019. Additionally, the identification process of various DENV genotypes was assessed, including: (1) DENV-1, genotype V, (2) the DENV-2 Asian/American and Asian II genotypes (3) DENV-3, genotype III, and (4) DENV-4, genotype I. This resulted in the discovery of a distinct genetic cladistic pattern for serotype DENV-2. Congregation of different migratory and resident bird species on aquatic ecosystems during winter migration increases contact rates and enhances influenza A virus (IAV) transmission. However, scarce research has been focused on the resident bird's contribution to the viral ecology at a local scale. The Mexican duck (Anas diazi) is an endemic endangered anatid from Mexico. This resident species shares aquatic habitats with migratory birds in the wetlands of Central Mexico. Therefore, here we describe the phylogenetic analysis of an IAV (A/Mexican duck/EstadodeMexico; Lerma/UIFMVZ377/2016(H5N2)) isolated in this species, during spatiotemporal concurrence with migratory anatids in the winter season. All eight gene sequences were obtained by nextgeneration sequencing. Maximum Likelihood trees were constructed using MEGA-X, with General Time Reversible + Invariant (GTR+I), Subtree Pruning and Regrafting (SPR) heuristic method, and 1000 bootstrap replicates. Similarities with six different IAV subtypes were observed through a BLAST search: H6N5, H7N7, H5N2, H4N6, H9N2, and H11N9, detected in wild ducks during 2015 in the Pacific, Central and Mississippi flyways stop sites across the United States of America and Canada. Background: The population in Mexico has high prevalence rates of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Hospitalization and death of COVID-19 patients in the countries most affected by the pandemic has been associated to chronic comorbidities., Objective: To describe the prevalence of NCDs in patients with COVID-19 in Mexico and analyze the increased risk due to comorbidities and risk factors on hospitalization, utilization of intensive care units and death., Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed from 212,802 confirmed COVID-19 cases reported by the Ministry of Health up to June 27, 2020. Odds ratios were performed using logistic regression model., Results: Up to 47.40% of patients with COVID-19 diagnosis were also reported with a comorbidity, with hypertension being the most frequent (20.12%). The report of at least one NCD significantly increased the risk of death with respect to patients without such diagnoses. Chronic kidney disease increased the risk of death the most (OR 2.31), followed by diabetes (OR 1.69), immunosuppression (OR 1.62), obesity (OR 1.42), hypertension (OR 1.24), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (OR 1.20). The comorbidities that most increased the risk of ICU and of intubation were diabetes, immunosuppression and obesity., Conclusion: NCD comorbidities increase the severity of COVID-19 infection. Given high NCD prevalence rates among the Mexican population, the pandemic poses a special threat to the health system and to society. Special prevention measures need to be strengthened for persons with NCD diagnoses in the short-term. Human papilloma virus (HPV) is a DNA virus associated with the development of cervical, penile, anal, vulvar, and oral cancers. In recent years, there has been an increase in oral cancer, which could be due to changes in sexual behavior in the general population. In México, there is scarce information on this regard, which prompted us to study HPV infection prevalence in the oral cavity of an indigenous community from the municipality of Siltepec, Chiapas, Mexico. Oral samples from 198 individuals were obtained with cytobrush for virus detection by nested PCR, using MY09/MY11 and GP5+/GP6+ primers, and positive samples were sequenced for HPV genotyping. We observed 12.1% HPV infection prevalence, which depended on gender, number of sexual partners, lack of using condoms, and oral sex practices. In contrast, no significant association between HPV infection and tobacco or alcohol consumption was detected. Furthermore, sequencing analyzes were performed where HPV-13 (21/24), -16 (2/24), -32 (1/24), -81 (1/24), and -83 (1/24) were evidenced and HPV-16 European/Asian and Asian/American E6 variants identified. These results demonstrated an important prevalence of HPV infection in the oral cavity of a Mexican indigenous community, where the predominant genotypes were associated with benign pathologies, and showed that high-risk genotype variants derived from different lineages., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest None., (Copyright © 2020.
