Recently it was discovered that a transient activation of transcription factor NF-κB can give cells properties essential for invasiveness and cancer initiating potential. In contrast, most oncogenes to date were characterized on the basis of mutations or by their constitutive overexpression. Study of NF-κB actually leads to a far more dynamic perspective on cancer: tumors caused by diverse oncogenes apparently evolve into cancer after loss of feedback regulation for NF-κB. This event alters the cellular phenotype and the expression of hormonal mediators, modifying signals between diverse cell types in a tissue. The result is a disruption of stem cell hierarchy in the tissue, and pervasive changes in the microenvironment and immune response to the malignant cells., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: To evaluate the correlation of serum CRP with clinical and laboratory parameters proven to be related to the cause of infection in pediatric cancer patients., Methods: We studied prospectively for a 12-month period, 37 pediatric cancer patients, who presented with 70 episodes of febrile illness (38 bacterial and 13 viral infections). At fever's onset and 48 h later, infection indices, such as CRP, WBC, ANC were measured in the peripheral blood. Moreover we calculated the change rate of CRP over 48 h [CRP/t=(CRP48h-initial CRP)/t (t=2 days)]. Cultures of biological fluids, PCR and antibody detection of infectious agents were also obtained., Results: When comparing patients with viral vs. bacterial infections, mean CRP levels on admission (11.0 vs. 33.1mg/L, p=0.005) and at 48 h (13.4 vs. 71.9 mg/L, p=0.0007), and CRP/t (0.9 vs. 18.8 mg/L/day, p=0.030) were significantly lower in the group with viral infection. At 48 h - follow-up, patients with positive culture had higher CRP levels (57.3 vs. 43.3mg/L, p=0.048) and higher CRP/t (15.9 vs. 7.7 mg/L/day, p=0.025), compared to those without proven infection. CRP/t at 48 h was correlated with both the fever duration (r=0.27, p=0.027) and maximum temperature (Tmax) during the febrile episode (r=0.30, p=0.013)., Conclusions: Single CRP values on fever initiation can differentiate between viral and bacterial infections in febrile pediatric cancer patients. A prospective epidemiologic surveillance of hospitalizations associated with influenza was conducted in order to calculate population-based hospitalization rates. Eligible children were 6 months to 13 years of age and were admitted to one of the two large children's hospitals in the Athens area during two influenza seasons. Nasopharyngeal aspirates were tested for influenza by a polymerase reaction assay. Influenza accounted for 9.9-11.8% of all admissions during the influenza season and the overall annual rate of hospitalizations was 13.6-16.8 cases per 10,000 children being highest for children under 5 years of age (26-31.2/10,000 children). Febrile seizures and acute otitis media were the two most common complications associated with influenza and antibiotics were administered to 61% of flu positive patients. Influenza is associated with high hospitalization rates among young children and these may be substantially reduced with the introduction of routine immunization., (Copyright © 2010. Study Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of sexual activity and contraception methods used by Greek adolescents. To assess the effect of various factors in the decision making on sexual activity., Design: A cross-sectional study design was applied. SETTING-PARTICIPANTS: The population (N = 1538) consisted of a random sample, stratified according to locality and population density, of 20 public junior high and high schools located in the urban district of Athens, Greece., Interventions: Anonymous self-completed questionnaires were used to assess sexual practices, contraception methods, and factors affecting sexual activity choices., Measures: Spearman association calculations and chi-square were used, while regression analysis models were also applied., Main Outcome: We examined the sexual practices among Greek adolescents, and indicated the psychosocial factors that may influence adolescents' sexual behavior., Results: 16% of the adolescents have had sexual intercourse, while the boy/girl ratio was 3/1 (P < 0.05). Mean age of sexual debut was 14 +/- 1.5 years. An additional 20% have had any other sexual experience at a mean age 13.5 +/- 1.5 years. Although sexually active adolescents generally use condoms (90.6%), only 32% use them properly (at every and throughout sexual contact). At least half of them do not have adequate protection (no method used or unreliable methods applied), while 8.2% of the girls have used emergency contraception. Adolescents with unstable home environment (divorce, recent death, not living with mother) or sexually experienced peers, as well as those that seek sexual education from siblings or friends have higher possibilities of being sexually active., Conclusion: Greek adolescents can be sexually active at a young age and they need sexual education on safe sex practices., (Copyright © 2010 North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology.
