Abstract

This study aims to identify the main causes of food waste (especially fruit and vegetables) and their relationship with prevention practices at supermarket and supplier levels. To do so, we conducted case studies in four Brazilian supermarket chains and their suppliers. Our findings show that although supermarkets seem to be concerned about avoiding food waste, they mostly focus on internal prevention actions, reflecting the lack of collaboration and information between supermarkets and suppliers. The low investment of supermarkets in actions to prevent food waste is focused only on their internal operations and, despite this, training is inefficient due to the high level of staff turnover and lack of involvement of suppliers in participating in this training. The use of technologies such as packaging, traceability, refrigeration, and transport equipment is insufficient, it increases production costs. A lack of strict legislation in Brazil makes it difficult for supermarkets and suppliers to donate food. Cultural issues specific to Brazil, such as consumer overhandling fruit and vegetables before buying these products, generate a great deal of waste. The paper contributes to the literature by identifying the main root causes of food waste and providing a list of prevention practices that supermarkets and suppliers can benefit from. Managerially, it can help supermarket managers spot the causes of food waste within their operations, and hence change, improve or implement practices and behavior to prevent food waste.

Abstract

The first phytochemical study of the aerial parts of Maytenus erythroxylon Reissek resulted in the isolation of five triterpenes, two with a lupane skeleton: 29-norlupan-3,20-dione (1) and 30-hydroxy-20 (29) -lupen-3-one (2) and three with friedelane skeleton: 3,4-secofriedelan-3-oic acid (3), 3-oxo-30-hydroxyfriedelane (4) and 3β-Hydroxyfriedelane (5), where the compound (1) is reported for the first time in the Maytenus genus. The structures were identified through the analysis of uni and two-dimensional NMR spectral data. The isolated phases and compounds were subjected to in silico and in vitro techniques to evaluate the microbiological potential against microorganisms that cause intestinal disorders, showing that only the compound (3) was able to inhibit Candida spp. strains.

Abstract

Acosmium dasycarpum (Vog.) Yakovlev, is a Brazilian medicinal plant, belonging to the Fabaceae family known as "Unha D'anta", exclusively found in the Cerrado (Brazilian Savanna) region, and has already shown tranquilizing, hypotensive, antineoplastic and antiseptic activities reported by traditional medicine and scientific evidences. Considering that overweight and obesity are an increasing worldwide health problem, the present study aimed to investigate the anti-obesity effect of bark powder and the dichloromethane extract of A. dasycarpum compared to the most abundant bioactive component (lupeol) using an obese mice model induced by a high-fat diet (HFD). The extracts derived from root bark of A. dasycarpum were characterized (phytochemical screening and GC–MS analysis) and their biological effects tested. After obesity inducement, Swiss male mice were treated with bark root powder or dichloromethane extract or lupeol (all treatments with 10 mg/1000 g/body weight dose) during 14 days. Oral glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, lipid profile, histology, ultrasound imaging and adipogenic genes expression were evaluated. The main results showed that A. dasycarpum root bark powder and dichloromethane extract reduced body weight and adiposity as evidenced by histology and ultrasound imaging. We also verified an improved glycemic and lipid profiles by reducing triglycerides, LDL and increasing HDL. The A. dasycarpum treatment suppressed the expression of CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein (C/EBPα), fatty acid translocase (FAT), and stearoyl coenzyme A desaturase-1 (SCD-1) adipogenic genes when compared to the obese control group. In conclusion, A. dasycarpum root bark showed a potential to be an accessible adjuvant treatment for obesity.

Abstract

Petrological characterization, U–Pb geochronology, Lu–Hf analyses and major and trace element data from mafic intrusions in the Central Espinhaco (central portion of the Brazilian shield) are used here to investigate the geological significance of the Early Neoproterozoic magmatism in the context of the Sao Francisco-Congo paleocontinent. These mafic bodies are represented by medium to coarse-grained metagabbros with plagioclase, amphibole and clinopyroxene. Zircon U–Pb isotopic data from two samples yielded weighted mean 206Pb/238U ages of 895 ​± ​3.4 ​Ma (MSWD ​= ​1.7) and 896 ​± ​2.4 ​Ma (MSWD ​= ​0.64), regarded as the best estimates for the crystallization age of these mafic rocks. Major and trace element data (including REEs) show that the gabbros originated from a subalkaline tholeiitic magma, typical of intraplate magmatism. Such rocks are slightly enriched in LREEs and LILEs and depleted in HFSEs. Our new isotope and geochemical data, along with regional knowledge, indicate that these metagabbros mark the beginning of an important Tonian-age extensional tectonic event of the landmass of which the Sao Francisco-Congo paleocontinent was part (Rodinia supercontinent or Central African block?). We furthermore suggest that these rocks belong to a prominent suite of Tonian-age mafic rocks that mark a diachronic breakup attempt of this landmass which may have occurred from south to north along the Espinhaco mountain range.

Abstract

Snakebite accidents are considered serious public health problems. They are often neglected, and individuals who have received insufficient treatment are subjected to various disabling alterations. Snake venoms are secretions composed of biologically active molecules capable of triggering local and systemic effects in envenomation victims. Bothropic snakes are responsible for most of the ophidian accidents in Brazil; their venoms are mainly related to local manifestations, due to a composition that is especially rich in proteases and phospholipases A2. The most common local damages are inflammation, with consequent cellular activation and release of inflammatory mediators, hemorrhage, edema, pain and (myo)necrosis, which may lead to amputation of the affected areas. Antivenom therapy is the main treatment for snakebites. However, the efficiency is mainly due to the neutralization of the toxins responsible for the systemic alterations. Thus, the local damages can evolve to markedly compromise the tissue. The complexity of these local effects associated with the toxicity of the snake venom components of the genus Bothrops, arouse interest in the study of the biochemical and pathophysiological mechanisms involved with the actions caused by toxins of the venom. Therefore, this review aims to analyze the edematogenic, hyperalgesic and myotoxic effects caused by Brazilian bothropic venoms in order to contribute to the study and elucidation of the mechanisms of action of its components and, consequently, enable discoveries of more effective combined therapies in the treatment of local damages resulting from envenoming.

Abstract

The chemical investigation of Macroptilium martii (Fabaceae) has provided the identification of twelve compounds obtained by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS), among which, a new flavonoid: isorhamnetin-3-O-galactose-6′'-O-rhamnose-4′”-O-galactose-2-methylbutyric acid (10) and two other flavonoids already reported. The structural elucidation of the new compound was carried out by HR-ESI-MS spectrometric analysis, 1H, 13C and two-dimensional NMR. Cytotoxic activity of 10 was evaluated towards HCT-116 (colorectal carcinoma), HeLa (cervical carcinoma), SK-MEL-28 (melanoma), PC-3 (prostate cancer) and MDA-MB-231 (breast cancer) cells.
