Abstract

The outbreak of pandemics (e.g., severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2 in 2019), influenza A viruses (H1N1 in 2009), etc.), and worldwide spike in the aging population have created unprecedented urgency for developing new drugs to improve disease treatment. As a result, extensive efforts have been made to design novel techniques for efficient drug monitoring and screening, which form the backbone of drug development. Compared to traditional techniques, microfluidics-based platforms have emerged as promising alternatives for high-throughput drug screening due to their inherent miniaturization characteristics, low sample consumption, integration, and compatibility with diverse analytical strategies. Moreover, the microfluidic-based models utilizing human cells to produce in-vitro biomimetics of the human body pave new ways to predict more accurate drug effects in humans. This review provides a comprehensive summary of different microfluidics-based drug sensing and screening strategies and briefly discusses their advantages. Most importantly, an in-depth outlook of the commonly used detection techniques integrated with microfluidic chips for highly sensitive drug screening is provided. Then, the influence of critical parameters such as sensing materials and microfluidic platform geometries on screening performance is summarized. This review also outlines the recent applications of microfluidic approaches for screening therapeutic and illicit drugs. Moreover, the current challenges and the future perspective of this research field is elaborately highlighted, which we believe will contribute immensely towards significant achievements in all aspects of drug development.

Abstract

Consider a two-echelon supply chain consisting of two manufacturers and a dominant retailer, such as big supermarkets like Walmart. Under a consignment contract with revenue sharing, the two manufacturers sell through the retailer two substitutable products whose demands are dependent on their shelf space and sales prices. The two manufacturers may compete horizontally for shelf space and pricing by three scenarios: Nash game, Stackelberg game, and collusion, and play vertically the retailer-Stackelberg game with the retailer. For each of these horizontal scenarios, we present all participators’ equilibrium strategies and their corresponding profits, based on which the impacts of manufacturers’ cost difference and moving sequence are investigated. Additionally, we discuss whether a horizontal collusion among manufacturers occurs when they choose their scenarios and whether centralization is always beneficial for the entire chain under the considered consignment contract. The study reveals the following results: (i) When the manufacturers compete horizontally, the high-cost manufacturer always sets a high-price and less shelf space strategy, while the low-cost manufacturer always adopts a low-price and more shelf space strategy, which is not affected by their moving sequence. If they collude horizontally, it is just reverse. (ii) When the two manufacturers compete horizontally, all participators’ equilibrium strategies and their corresponding profits are significantly influenced by manufacturers’ moving sequence. (iii) A horizontal collusion between the manufacturers can occur only when their cost difference is relatively small; this finding supplements existing literature. (iv) When the cost difference between manufacturers is relatively big, then centralization may be detrimental to the entire chain, which can explain why several supply chains adopt vertical competition strategies in practice. In addition, we find that these results still hold for the limited shelf space scenario and shelf-space limitation enhances the horizontal and vertical competition intensity by increasing shelf space fee.

Abstract

Self-powered sensors and sensing systems without an external power supply have shown their superior advantages and become more popular in recent years. In this paper, the first self-powered nanosensor based on the thermoelectric effect for the detection of mercury ions is demonstrated. In this sensing device, tellurium nanowires (Te NWs) act as the core material to spontaneously generate an electric output by a small surrounding temperature difference and act as a recognition element for specific reaction with mercury ions. The as-developed thermoelectric nanosensor can provide a high sensitivity (LOD of 1.7 nM) and good linear range (from 10 nM to 1 μM) of mercury ion detection. The selectivity of the self-powered thermoelectric nanosensor is also evaluated. Among the investigated metal ions, only Hg2+ ions result in a distinct enhanced output voltage, by approximately 9 times. The self-powered thermoelectric sensor exhibits the capability to clearly distinguish even a small concentration of Hg2+ ions from the presence of various other species in environmental samples. All these results indicate that the thermoelectric nanosensor shows great potential to become a portable sensor for the in-field sensing of environmental samples.

Abstract

Clean water is essential in our daily life. However, nearly one billion people are forced to drink water contaminated with bacteria, leading to diarrhea, dehydration, and even death. Previously, various photocatalysts have been applied to replace high-cost and highly toxic methods for sewage treatment. Nevertheless, the requirement of external light sources limits their application. Herein, we develop a new type of nanocatalyst based on single- and few-layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets (NSs) that can catalyze the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) to inactivate bacteria either through a piezoelectric effect (mechanical vibration) or photocatalytic effect (light irradiation). After 60 min of mechanical vibration or visible-light irradiation, the MoS2 NSs can reduce Escherichia coli (E. Coli) by 99.999%. In addition, the ROS generation efficiency and bacterial disinfection performance of the catalyst can be enhanced by depositing Au nanoparticles (NPs) on MoS2 NSs. The period of mechanical vibration or visible-light irradiation that achieves the same 99.999% reduction in E. coli is shortened to 45 min. Moreover, a hybridization of the piezoelectric and photocatalytic effects results in a performance superior to that obtained with the individual effects. A 99.999% reduction in E. coli is also accomplished within 15 min through a combination of mechanical vibration and near-infrared (NIR)-light irradiation. This MoS2 nanocatalyst is a promising candidate for nextgeneration water purification systems because of its ability to be triggered by diverse environmental stimuli.

Abstract

As a new type of energy harvesting technology, the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) can convert distributed energy into electrical energy. It is widely used in various fields such as wearable devices, biomedical devices, Internet of Things (IoT), natural environment, etc. However, there are still some issues that need to be solved for the commercial implementation of TENGs. This review focuses on four major kinds of applications for TENG as the platform of harvesting micro-nano energy: in vivo, in vitro, living environment and wild environment. The challenges and feasible techniques facing TENGs are summarized in three aspects, including low energy output, immature manufacturing technology and unreliable service life. We also review the recent progress in the strategies for improving the output performance and robustness of TENGs, including but not limited to material optimization, device engineering and power management. The aim is to establish a feasible framework of TENGs from laboratory to engineering application. Finally, the future trend of TENGs' application in distributed sensors and biomedical devices has prospected as a promising micro-nano energy for guiding the next innovation researches.
