INTRODUCTION: The repair of bone defects is ideally accomplished with bone tissue engineering. Recent studies have explored the possibility of functional modification of scaffolds in bone tissue engineering. We prepared an SF-CS-nHA (SCN) biomimetic bone scaffold and functionally modified the scaffold material by adding a polydopamine (PDA) coating loaded with exosomes (Exos) of marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). The effects of the functional composite scaffold (SCN/PDA-Exo) on BMSC proliferation and osteogenic differentiation were investigated. Furthermore, the SCN/PDA-Exo scaffolds were implanted into animals to evaluate their effect on bone regeneration. METHODS: SCN biomimetic scaffolds were prepared by a vacuum freeze-drying/chemical crosslinking method. A PDA-functionalized coating loaded with BMSC-Exos was added by the surface coating method. The physical and chemical properties of the functional composite scaffolds were detected by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy spectrum analysis and contact angle tests. In vitro, BMSCs were inoculated on different scaffolds, and the Exo internalization by BMSCs was detected by confocal microscopy. The BMSC proliferation activity and cell morphology were detected by SEM, CCK-8 assays and phalloidin staining. BMSC osteogenic differentiation was detected by immunofluorescence, alizarin red staining and qRT‒PCR. In vivo, the functional composite scaffold was implanted into a rabbit critical radial defect model. Bone repair was detected by 3D-CT scanning. HE staining, Masson staining, and immunohistochemistry were used to evaluate bone regeneration. RESULTS: Compared with the SCN scaffold, the SCN/PDA-Exo-functionalized composite scaffold had a larger average surface roughness and stronger hydrophilicity. In vitro, the Exos immobilized on the SCN/PDA-Exo scaffolds were internalized by BMSCs. Burns are usually difficult to treat because their susceptibe to bacterial infections. When burns is accompanied by hyperthermia, the heat accumulated on the skin will causes extensive tissue damage. Most dressings focus on the treatment process, while ignoring the first-aid treatment to remove hyperthermia. To make matters worse, when outdoors, it is hard to find clean water to wash and cool the burned area. A dressing which can simultaneously realize first-time cooling and repairing treatment of the burned area can shorten treatment time, and is especially beneficial for outdoor use. In this study, a handheld coaxial electrospinning device is developed for preparing platelet-rich plasma @Polycaprolactone-epsilon polylysine (PRP@PCL/ε-PL) core-shell nanofibers. The nanofibers can be synchronously transformed into ice fibers during the spinning process, and directly deposited on the skin. The whole process is convenient to use outdoor. Via dual cooling mechanisms, first aid can take away the excessive heat in the burn area by nanofibers. These core-shell nanofibers also show its excellent antimicrobial and tissue regeneration-promoting properties. Therefore, it achieves first-time cooling and repair treatment of the burned area at the same time. Moreover, due to direct in-situ deposition of this handheld coaxial electrospinning, better antimicrobial properties, and faster healing performance are achieved. By using this integrated strategy that combines cooling, antibacterial and healing promotion, the burn recovery time is shortened from 21 days to 14 days.

Controlled pesticide release in response to environmental stimuli by encapsulating pesticides in a carrier is a feasible approach to improve the effective utilization rate. In this study, pH-responsive release nanoparticles loaded with penconazole (PE) were prepared by ionic cross-linking of chitosan and carboxymethyl chitosan (PE@CS/CMCS-NPs). PE@CS/CMCS-NPs exhibited good washout resistance and wettability properties, increasing the washing resistance of the pesticide by approximately 20 times under continuous washing. The results of the release experiments showed that nanoparticles had adjustable controlled-release characteristics with the change in pH based on the swelling of nanoparticles. The results of spore germination experiments showed that PE@CS/CMCS-NPs enhanced the inhibitory effect under acidic conditions. The field experiment results showed that PE@CS/CMCS-NPs had a better control effect than PE-aqueous solution, extended the duration and slowed down the dissipation of PE. These results indicated that the CS/CMCS-NPs pH-responsive release system has great potential in the development of an effective pesticide formulation.

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is well suitable for searching for monochromatic and sharp $\gamma$-ray structures in the GeV$-$TeV range thanks to its unprecedented high energy resolution. In this work, we search for $\gamma$-ray line structures using five years of DAMPE data. To improve the sensitivity, we develop two types of dedicated data sets (including the BgoOnly data which is the first time to be used in the data analysis for the calorimeter-based gamma-ray observatories) and adopt the signal-to-noise ratio optimized regions of interest (ROIs) for different DM density profiles. No line signals or candidates are found between 10 and 300 GeV in the Galaxy. The constraints on the velocity-averaged cross section for $\chi\chi \to \gamma\gamma$ and the decay lifetime for $\chi \to \gamma\nu$, both at 95% confidence level, have been calculated and the systematic uncertainties have been taken into account. Comparing to the previous Fermi-LAT results, though DAMPE has an acceptance smaller by a factor of $\sim 10$, similar constraints on the DM parameters are achieved and below 100 GeV the lower limits on the decay lifetime are even stronger by a factor of a few. For information asymmetry in e-commerce platforms, question answering system (Q&A) and online comments are used to build trust relationship. Although online reviews play a significant role in reducing information asymmetry, information overload and distortion are also not negligible. In the study, text mining was used to extract various questions from Q&A system and online comments to obtain the content that consumers are most concerned about in online shopping, and the similarities and differences of the two mining results are compared. The results show that Q&A system has a great influence on users' decision making. The Q&A system is not only complementary to online comments, but also can provide validation for the information of online comments.

Fetal heart rate (FHR) and maternal heart rate (MHR) are important indicators of fetal well-being during pregnancy. A common method in clinical examination is to estimate the FHR using the Doppler shift of echoes from umbilical artery blood flow based on an ultrasound pulsed-wave (PW) Doppler technique. Similarly, a sampling gate can be located at the maternal blood flow to measure MHR using PW Doppler. Ultrasound color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) is one of the most commonly used imaging modes for clinical fetal examinations. Color coding is employed to display the blood flow velocity and direction in color grades according to the Doppler shift. Continuous CDF images contain dynamic changes characteristics of the blood flow. The periodic characteristics can be used to obtain heart rate information. Therefore, here we propose a novel method to measure FHR and MHR simultaneously using CDF images. The proposed method calculates the histogram of color similarity of CDF images to initially extract the periodic characteristics of the CDF image sequence. The histogram of color similarity function is then processed by a bandpass filter and autocorrelation operation to reduce noise and enhance periodicity. Finally, peak detection is performed on the processed signal to obtain the period and estimate the heart rate. The proposed method can measure the FHR and MHR in parallel after selecting two regions containing the umbilical artery and maternal blood flow, respectively. Thus, the method has high computational efficiency. The proposed method was evaluated on a Doppler flow phantom and clinical CDF images and then compared with the PW Doppler method. The correlation analysis and Bland-Altman plots reveal that the proposed method agrees well with the PW Doppler. It is a sanity check method for real-time clinical FHR and MHR measurements.

Statement of problem Strontium has been validated for potent bone-seeking and antiosteoporotic properties and elicits a potentially beneficial impact on implant osseointegration in patients with osteoporosis. However, the efficacy of strontium supplementation on improving new bone formation and implant osseointegration in the presence of osteoporotic bone is still unclear. Purpose The purpose of this systematic review was to comprehensively assess the efficacy of strontium supplementation, encompassing oral intake and local delivery of strontium, on implant osseointegration in patients with osteoporosis. Material and methods Searches on electronic databases (MEDLINE or PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, Embase, and Clinicaltrials.gov ) and manual searches were conducted to identify relevant preclinical animal trials up to June 2020. The primary outcomes were the percentage of bone-implant contact and bone area; the secondary outcomes were quantitative parameters of biomechanical tests and microcomputed tomography (μCT). Results Fourteen preclinical trials (1 rabbit, 1 sheep, and 12 rat), with a total of 404 ovariectomized animals and 798 implants, were eligible for analysis. The results revealed a significant 17.1% increase in bone-implant contact and 13.5% increase in bone area, favoring strontium supplementation despite considerable heterogeneity. Subgroup analyses of both bone-implant contact and bone area exhibited similar outcomes with low to moderate heterogeneity. Results of biomechanical and μCT tests showed that strontium-enriched implantation tended to optimize the mechanical strength and microarchitecture of newly formed bone despite moderate to generally high heterogeneity. Conclusions Based on the available preclinical evidence, strontium supplementation, including local and systemic delivery, showed promising results for enhancing implant osseointegration in the presence of osteoporosis during 4 to 12 weeks of healing. Future well-designed standardized studies are necessary to validate the efficacy and safety of strontium supplementation and to establish a standard methodology for incorporating Sr into implant surfaces in a clinical setting.

Far-ranging and improper uses of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) over the last few decades have led to severe water contamination that imposes serious effects on human beings and the ecological system. Therefore, there is an increasing demand for a highly-efficient and environmentally friendly technology for the removal of PPCPs from aqueous solutions. Adsorption technology is an appropriate technology to solve this issue. Carbon-based composites, ranging from modified activated carbon to functionalized biochar, show great potential for this purpose. This review hence elaborates on the environmental occurrences and risks of PPCPs and summarizes the recent progress in removing PPCPs from water using carbon-based adsorbents. The pore structure, relatively large specific surface area (SSA), abundant surface functional groups, highly aromatic structures and the extra excellent characteristics of the cooperative materials contribute to their outstanding adsorption performance. Furthermore, the biochar-clay material is cost effective and more efficient compared to traditional activated carbon regarding the adsorption of PPCPs. Among the emerging adsorbents, graphene and carbon nanotubes composites show superior adsorption ability. Their adsorption mechanisms, such as electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and pore filling, are discussed in details.

The complete curriculum schedule of the School of Dentistry, National Taiwan University (NTU) appeared in 1960. This study aimed to understand the development of dental education in Taiwan by comparing the past and current dental school curricula of NTU.This study collected the 1960, 1990 and 2020 dental school curriculum schedules for dental students of NTU from the related websites and used the documentary and secondary data analyses to further compare the obtained data.The number of credits for all the curricula offered by NTU to undergraduate dental students decreased from 264 in 1960 to 243 in 1990 and further to 242 in 2020 with a total decrease of 22 credits by 8.3%. The number (proportion) of credits of medicine courses decreased from 102 (38.6%) in 1960 to 52 (21.4%) in 1990, and then increased to 60 (24.8%) in 2020, with a total decrease of 42 credits by 41.2%, while those of dentistry courses increased from 70 (26.5%) in 1960 to 122 (50.2%) in 1990 and further to 132 (54.5%) in 2020, with a total increase of 62 credits by 88.6%. Among them, clinical practice of dentistry had the greatest growth with a total increase of 42 credits by 233.3%.The increase of dentistry courses and the decrease of medicine courses are the general trends for modern dental education. The dental school of NTU has the ability to provide more refined dentistry courses to catch the world trend of dental education.

Depression is a common mental disorder in older adults. This study aimed to determine the incidence of depression and the relationship between sedentary behavior and sleep duration in elderly individuals.A total of 49,317 elderly adults from eight health centers in six Chinese provinces completed an online self-reported health questionnaire. Logistic regression was used to explore the association between sedentary behavior, sleep duration, and depression symptoms.Symptoms of depression were present in 20.1% of older adults. Sedentary behaviors for6 h/day (OR = 3.16; 95% CI: 2.90-3.44; p 0.001) were a greater risk factor for depressive symptoms in older adults than sedentary behaviors for less than 3 h/day. Elderly individuals with short sleep durations (7 h/day) were more likely to experience depression (OR = 2.20; 95% CI: 2.07-2.34; p 0.001).This study suggested that sedentary behavior and short sleep duration in older Chinese adults are associated with depressive symptoms. In China, further improvement of the mental health and lifestyle of elderly individuals may be warranted.

Studies of primary atomization of liquid transverse jets in subsonic crossflow consider surface waves as the main cause of jet fragmentation. The characteristics of surface waves during jet fragmentation have been initially analyzed, but there is a lack of understanding of the mechanism of surface wave generation and development. This paper investigates the primary atomization of liquid transverse jets in subsonic crossflow based on the numerical method of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) with the coupled level set and volume of fluid method (CLSVOF) interface tracking, combined with adaptive mesh encryption techniques, where the liquid phase medium is water. This paper focuses on the fine structure of the primary atomization of the jet column, including the evolution of the jet column and the process of shedding the surface of the jet column, to clarify the physical process of primary fragmentation of the jet. The near-field flow structure and gas–liquid interaction are also analyzed to investigate the mechanism of primary atomization of liquid transverse jets and the mechanism of surface wave generation and development in subsonic flows. The results show that the shear action of gas and liquid leads to the generation of Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) unstable wave, and KH surface wave dominates the surface breaking of jet column. The extrusion of gas and liquid results in the unstable fluctuation of Rayleigh–Taylor (RT), and the RT surface wave dominates the jet column, and finally the cylindrical fracture occurs. The development trend of RT surface wave is to increase the wavelength along the jet direction. When the wavelength of the RT surface wave develops from 0.12 mm to 1.2 mm, the jet column will be columnar broken at the trough of the last RT wave.

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is pivotal to drive green hydrogen generation from water electrolysis, but yet is strictly overshadowed by the sluggish reaction kinetics. Earth-abundant and cut-price transition-metal compounds, particularly CoFe layered-double-hydroxides (LDHs), show the distinct superiorities in contrast to noble metals and their derivatives. In this review, we firstly underline their fundamental issues in electrocatalytic water oxidation, including CoFe LDHs crystal structure, the surface of (hydr)oxides confined to OER and the controversial roles of Fe species, aiming at understanding the structure-related activity and catalytic mechanism. Advanced approaches for optimizing OER activity of CoFe LDHs are then comprehensively overviewed, which will shed light on the different working mechanisms and provide a concise analysis of their unique advantages. Finally, a perspective on the future development of CoFe LDHs electrocatalysts is offered. We hope this review can give a concise and explicit guidance for the development of transition-metal-based electrocatalysts in the energy field.
