13. Effect of the stabilizer on bubble stability and homogeneity of cement emulsified asphalt mortar in slab ballastless track

Abstract

Cement emulsified asphalt mortar (CAM) is a critical and complex engineering material for slab ballastless track. Since the bubble stability of fresh CAM is a crucial and potential property to determine the construction quality of hardened CAM on site, to improve the bubble stability of CAM, the effect of the stabilizer on bubble stability was studied and evaluated by the property indexes of the workability, fluidity, time-dependent loss of air content under simulating disturbance condition and segregation of CAM in lab and on site. Moreover, to research the actual engineering application effect of the stabilizer, the bonding strength and construction quality of CAM with and without the stabilizer were tested respectively by lifting the full-scale track slab above the CAM at the age of 14 days on site along with the microstructure analysis on the interfacial morphology with SEM. Results showed that the stabilizer can enhance the consistency and improve the bubble stability of fresh CAM; reduce the segregation and improve the homogeneity of hardened CAM effectively. Moreover, the stabilizer can increase the interfacial bonding strength between the hardened CAM and the concrete bottom of track slab with fewer asphalt particles or bubbles of CAM floating up to the interfacial surface; improve the construction quality of CAM on site. Good agreements for the effect of the stabilizer have also been found between the simulating experiment result in laboratory and that on site. The effect of the stabilizer on bubble stability of CAM may be due to the three-dimensional network formed by long cellulose ether and associative polyurethane molecular chains of the stabilizer. Related model was briefly supposed. These findings show promising field applications of the stabilizer and also provide a valuable reference for the preparation and construction quality control of CAM with high workability.

Abstract

The complex of lanthanum chloride with Glycine and Alanine, La(Gly)2(Ala)3Cl3 · 2H2O, was synthesized and characterized by IR, elementary analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and chemical analysis. The dissolution enthalpies of LaCl3 · 7H2O(s), 2Gly(s) + 3Ala(s) and La(Gly)2(Ala)3Cl3 · 2H2O(s) were determined in 2 mol · L−1 HCl by a solution-reaction isoperibol calorimeter. By designing a thermochemical cycle in terms of Hess' Law and through calculation, the reaction enthalpy of lanthanum chloride seven-hydrate with Glycine and Alanine was obtained: ΔrHθm(298.15 K) = (29.652 ± 0.504) kJ · mol−1, and the standard enthalpy of formation of La(Gly)2(Ala)3Cl3 · 2H2O(s) ΔfHθm[La(Gly)2 (Ala)3Cl3 · 2H2O, s, 298.15 K] = −4467.6 ± 8.3 kJ · mol−1.

The mixed complex of Nd3+ with glycine and alanine, Nd(Gly)2(Ala)3Cl3·2H2O, was synthesized and characterized by IR, elementary analysis, thermogravimatric analysis and chemical analysis, and the dissolution enthalpies of NdCl3·6H2O(s), 2Gly(s) + 3Ala(s) and Nd(Gly)2(Ala)3Cl3·2H2O(s) were determined in 2 mol/L HCl by the classical solution calorimetry. By designing a thermochemical cycle according to Hess‘ law and through calculation, we obtained the reaction enthalpy of neodymium chloride six-hydrate with glycine and alanine: Δ r H° m (298.15 K )=37.24±0.299 kJ/mol, and the standard enthalpy of formation of Nd(Gly)2(Ala)3Cl3·2H2O(s): ΔfH°m[Nd(Gly)2(Ala)3Cl3·2H2O, s, 298.15 K] = −4441.6±8.262 kJ/mol.

The product from reaction of lanthanum chloride seven-hydrate with salicylic acid and 8-hydroxyquinoline, La(C7H5O3)2·(C9H6NO), was characterized by IR, elemental analysis, molar conductance, and thermogravimetric analysis. The standard molar enthalpies of solution of [LaCl3·7H2O (s)], [2C7H6O3 (s)], [C9H7NO (s)] and [La(C7H5O3)2·(C9H6NO) (s)] in a mixed solvent of absolute ethyl alcohol, dimethyl formamide (DMF) and perchloric acid were determined by calorimetry to be Δ s H m Θ [LaCl3·7H2O (s), 298.15 K] = −96.45 ± 0.18 kJ mol−1, Δ s H m Θ [2C7H6O3 (s), 298.15 K] = 14.99 ± 0.17 kJ mol−1, Δ s H m Θ [C9H7NO (s), 298.15 K] = −3.86 ± 0.06 kJ mol−1 and Δ s H m Θ [La(C7H5O3)2·(C9H6NO) (s), 298.15 K] = −117.78 ± 0.11 kJ mol−1. The enthalpy change of the reaction (1) LaCl3·7H2O (s) + 2C7H6O3 (s) + C9H7NO (s) = La (C7H5O3)2·(C9H6NO) (s) + 3HCl (g) + 7H2O (l) was determined to be Δ r H m Θ = 91.57 ± 0.34 kJ mol−1. From data in the literature, through Hess’ law, the standard molar enthalpy of formation of La(C7H5O3)2·(C9H7NO) (s) was estimated to be Δ f H m Θ [La(C7H5O3)2·(C9H6NO) (s), 298.15 K] = − 2076.5 ± 3.9 kJ mol−1.
