Abstract

CANGAROO-III is an Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) array of four 10 m telescopes for very high energy (sub-TeV) gamma-ray astronomy. A design study of the CANGAROO-III telescope system was carried out using the Monte Carlo technique in order to optimize the pixel size and the telescope spacing. Studies were also made of observations at low elevation angles.

Abstract

A 3.8 m telescope for very high energy gamma-ray astronomy was installed near Woomera, South Australia in 1991 and started operation in 1992. The construction and operation of the 3.8 m telescope is described, showing the characteristics of the experimental apparatus, such as the electronics circuits and the phototube camera. The field of view of the camera is of 3° diameter, consisting of 220 pixels with each pixel viewing a 0.12° × 0.12° area of the sky. Analysis of acquired data shows the expected features of Cherenkov light from air showers, and it is concluded that the telescope is operating as an imaging Cherenkov telescope. We estimate that the energy threshold for gamma-rays is about 1 TeV.

Abstract

The fission spectrum averaged cross-section of 94 Zr( n , α ) 91 Sr reaction was obtained by comparing that of 27 Al( n , α ) 24 Na reaction as reference. Highly enriched 94 ZrO 2 and 27 Al samples were irradiated with fast neutrons having a fission-like spectrum above about 5.6 MeV. After the neutron irradiation, the produced 91 Sr was chemically separated from the irradiated sample. Gamma-rays from 91 Sr and 24 Na were measured with a Ge(Li) detector. The obtained value is 5.37 ± 0.43 μ b assuming the averaged cross-section of the reference reaction to be 0.61 mb.
