Objectives The aim of this AFIRE (Atrial Fibrillation and Ischemic Events With Rivaroxaban in Patients With Stable Coronary Artery Disease) trial subgroup analysis was to examine rivaroxaban monotherapy benefits and their relation to the time between stenting and enrollment among patients after coronary stenting. Background Of 2,215 patients with atrial fibrillation and stable coronary artery disease in the AFIRE trial, rivaroxaban monotherapy was noninferior to rivaroxaban plus antiplatelet therapy (combination therapy) in terms of efficacy and superior for safety endpoints. However, thrombotic risk after antiplatelet therapy cessation remained a concern among 1,444 patients who had undergone coronary stenting >1 year before enrollment. Methods The benefits of rivaroxaban monotherapy in coronary stenting subgroups were assessed for efficacy (a composite of stroke, systemic embolism, myocardial infarction, unstable angina requiring revascularization, or death of any cause), safety (major bleeding defined according to International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis criteria), ischemic endpoints, net adverse clinical event, and time between stenting and enrollment. Results Efficacy and safety endpoints for monotherapy were superior to combination therapy, with HRs of 0.70 for efficacy (95% CI: 0.50-0.98; P = 0.036) and 0.55 for safety (95% CI: 0.33-0.92; P = 0.019). For ischemic endpoints, the HR was 0.82 (95% CI: 0.58-1.15; P = 0.240). The HR became smaller with longer time between stenting and enrollment (efficacy, P for interaction = 0.158; safety, P = 0.097). Conclusions In patients with atrial fibrillation after coronary stenting, the benefits of rivaroxaban monotherapy for efficacy and safety endpoints were consistent with those in the whole AFIRE trial population. The benefits became apparent with longer time between stenting and enrollment. The 5d transition metal Ir was added into the MgB2 superconductor. The Mg, B and Ir were sintered at 1173K for 30minutes under Ar-H2 atmosphere in the electric furnace. The nominal Irx(MgB2)1-x samples were prepared in the Ir concentration range of 0 < x< 0.05. Electrical resistivity ρ was measured between 20K and 50K by the 4-terminals method. The field and x-dependence of Jc at 20K were analyzed by the extended critical state model. The enhancement of Jc was observed for the x = 0.01 sample.

We investigated a solid oxide fuel cell stack that employs anode-supported planar cells in which two intermediate plates are installed every 10 cells to determine the influence of the separation and reconnection of the intermediate plates after high temperature operation. We showed that this separation and reconnection caused no significant degradation in stack performance. A 30-cell stack, which was constructed by removing two 10-cell sub-stacks from a 50-cell stack that had operated stably 1200 h, functioned well. The difference between the average voltages of the cells in the 50- and 30-cell stacks was less than 3% when the current density, fuel utilization, and oxygen utilization were 0.30 A cm −2 , 60%, and 15%, respectively. The 30-cell stack operated stably for about 1200 h with almost no degradation. These findings indicate that our stack can be restored after cells in the stack have broken down simply by removing the 10-cell sub-stacks that contain the broken cells and replacing them with undamaged 10-cell sub-stacks.

We have developed a 1 kW class solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack composed of 50 anode-supported planar 120-mm-diameter SOFCs. Intermediate plates, which exhibited negligible deformation under operating conditions, were placed in the stack to cancel out the cumulative error related to the position and angle of the stack parts. The stack provided an electrical conversion efficiency of 54% (based on the lower heating value (LHV) of the methane used as a fuel) and an output of 1120 W when the fuel utilization, current density, and operating temperature were 67%, 0.28 A cm −2 , and 1073 K, respectively. The stack operated stably for almost 700 h.

We have developed a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack with an internal manifold structure. The stack, which is composed of 25 anode-supported 100-mm-diameter SOFCs, provided an electrical conversion efficiency of 56% (based on the lower heating value of methane, which was used as a fuel) and an output of 350 W when the fuel utilization, current density, and operating temperature were 75%, 0.3 A cm−2, and 1073 K, respectively. The electrical efficiency and the output were maintained for 1100 h. The cell voltage fluctuation was ±2% for 25 cells. The relationship between average cell voltage and current density in the 25-cell stack was as almost the same as that in the 1- and 10-cell stacks, which suggests that our stack provides almost the same cell performance regardless the number of the cells.

A diagnostic technique to study the global structure of the recycling and impurity (molybdenum) influx from the plasma facing components is proposed and is tested using the three kinds of perturbations (gas puffing, transport oscillation, and localized heat deposition). Balmer line intensities I H α , charge exchange flux ΓCX and neutral molybdenum line IMoI are measured and their correlations are analyzed with response to the perturbation parameters ( I H α at the gas port, density ne, and hot spot temperature Thot). A simple model calculation is done to understand these correlations. It is found that the phase reversal of ΓCX with respect to ne modulation is well reproduced and a critical density exists for the phase reversal of IMoI. The evaporation Mo flux evaluated with measured Thot is also compared with enhanced IMoI for the heat load perturbation and it contribution to the total content of Mo ions is evaluated by ∼30% increment.

Tokamak operation has been performed under the localized plasma wall interaction conditions in TRIAM-1M, using a water cooled rail movable limiter (ML) made of Molybdenum. The limiter surface temperature dependence on hydrogen recycling and neutral molybdenum impurity production behaviour has been studied using visible as well as infrared spectroscopy during low power long pulse and high power short pulse discharges. In these experiments it is considered that escaped energetic electrons are lost mainly on ML and localised heat deposition makes a ‘hot spot’ on ML. It has been observed that H 2 , H α and MoI intensities critically depend on the hot spot temperature ( T hot ) and enhanced recycling due to localized PWI on ML can fuel the discharge without any external fueling source.

Aim: Platinum-based therapy has shown survival benefits in elderly patiients with NSCLC. The aim of this multicenter retrospective cohort study was to identify the risk factors for the development of SAEs and explore the prediction of elderly patients unfit for platinum-based therapy. Methods: Data of 198 consecutive elderly patients treated with platinum-based therapy between 2010 and 2012 were reviewed. Unfit elderly was defined as patients who developed an event of early termination of treatment (in 1-2 cycles) without disease progression. We focused on non-hematological (non-H)-SAEs (grade 3-5) and hematological (H)-SAEs (grade 4-5) in early phase (1-2 cycles), and explored the association between AEs and early termination of treatment. Results: Patient characteristics were as follows: male/female 161/37; median age 73 years (range 70-83); PS 0-1/2 190/8; non squamous cell carcinoma (Sq)/Sq 144/54. The majority of drugs in combination were pemetrexed (42%) and paclitaxel (30%). The median overall survival (OS) was 11.9 months. 44 (22%) and 39 (19%) developed non-H- and H-SAEs in early phase, respectively. Multivariate analysis identified the baseline low serum albumin (low Alb) (≤3.0 g/dl) as an independent risk factor for the development of non-H-SAEs [adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 2.75, (95% CI: 1.18-6.30)], while the baseline low creatinine clearance ( Conclusions: In addition to non-H-SAEs, grade 2 non-H-AEs affected the continuation of platinum-based therapy. Baseline Alb would be useful for predicting the risk of non-H-SAEs and unfit elderly in platinum-based therapy. Disclosure: Y. Cw and pulsed ESR spectroscopy have been applied to bis[dianthrylcarbene] coupled by 1,4-diethynylbenzene in order to investigate electronic and molecular structures of the biscarbene. Spin multiplicity of the biscarbene was identified by 2D-Electron Spin Transient Nutation (2D-ESTN) spectroscopy. 2D-ESTN spectra showed that the biscarbene has a thermally accessible excited triplet state. It is concluded that the two dianthrylcarbene units are antiferromagnetically coupled through 1,4-diethynylbenzene. A fine-structure parameter D of the triplet state determined by the spectral simulation was fairly large compared with that expected from a distance between the two localized non-bonding electron spins on the divalent carbons, indicating an unusually large delocalization effect of the π-electron spin from the carbene sites to a 1,4-ethynylbenzene unit and dianthryl moieties. A large amount of the delocalization arises from the perpendicular conformation of the n-conjugations at the divalent carbon sites.

Population studies on eight short tandem repeat (STR) loci D16S539, D7S820, D13S317, D5S818, CSF1PO, TPOX, TH01, and vWA were carried out in a sample of 460 unrelated Japanese individuals living in the Gifu Prefecture (central region of Japan). The eight loci were co-amplified using the GenePrintk PowerPlexk Fluorescent STR system (Promega). The amplified products were electrophoresed using 4% denaturing polyacrylamide. After the electrophoresis, the gels were scanned on a FMBIO II MultiView fluorescent image analyzer (Hitachi Software Engineering) and the fluorescent DNA bands of the eight loci were detected simultaneously. The fragment sizes of the bands were determined using FMBIO Analysis Software (Hitachi Software Engineering) and typed using Excel STaRCall Genotyping Software (Hitachi Software Engineering). The following allele frequency ranges were found: D16S539: seven alleles with frequencies ranging from 0.002 (allele 8) to 0.329 (allele 9); D7S820: eight alleles with frequencies ranging from 0.003 (allele 14) to 0.316 (allele 11); D13S317: eight alleles with frequencies ranging from 0.001 (allele 7) to 0.265 (allele 8); D5S818: 10 alleles with frequencies ranging from 0.003 (alleles 6, 7, and 15) to 0.263 (allele 11); CSF1PO: eight alleles with frequencies ranging from 0.003 (allele 15) to 0.396 (allele 12); TPOX: six alleles with frequencies ranging from 0.003 (allele 14) to 0.463 (allele 8); TH01: six alleles with frequencies ranging from 0.005 (allele 10) to 0.399 (allele 9); vWA: nine alleles with frequencies ranging from 0.002 (allele 21) to 0.279 (allele 17). The combined power of discrimination (PD) for the eight loci was 0.999999992 and the mean exclusion chance (MEC) 0.998. For all loci, no deviations from Hardy–Weinberg expectations were detected using the homozygosity, the likelihood ratio, and the exact tests. The results indicate that these eight loci are useful genetic markers for forensic personal identification and paternity testing in the Japanese population.

By modelling the observed distribution of 210 Pb and 210 Po in surface waters of the Pacific, residence times relative to particulate removal are determined. For the center of the North Pacific gyre these are τ Po = 0.6years andτ Pb = 1.7years . The surface ocean τ Pb is determined by particulate transport rather than plankton settling. The fact that it is about two orders of magnitude smaller than τ Pb for the deep ocean implies a sharp change in the adsorptive quality of particles during descent through the water column.

During the FAMOUS survey of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in August and September, 1974 by the research submersible “Alvin” two cores were taken for radiochemical analysis. One core (527-3) was 24 cm long and the other (530-4) was 17 cm long. Both were from water depths of about 2500 m. Slices of the cores were analyzed for radiocarbon and 210 Pb. In the top 8 cm layer of 527-3 dates are constant with depth at about 2400 yr B.P. Below 8 cm radiocarbon dates increase linearly yielding an accumulation rate of 2.9 cm/10 3 yr. The constant age from the surface to a depth of 8 cm can be attributed to biogenic mixing to that depth with no significant mixing below 8 cm. The excess 210 Pb pattern yields a mixing coefficient of 0.6 × 10 −8 cm 2 /sec. The top 2 cm of core 530-4 has a 14 C date of 13,000 yr B.P. Below 4 cm dates increase from 16,400 to 18,000 yr B.P., but this increase probably is not statistically significant. The data indicate physical disruption of the section. The date of this disruption is not defined by the data but the restriction of excess 210 Pb to the top centimeter of the core implies either that sediment accumulation at this site has only recently resumed or that both the rate of accumulation and rate and depth of bioturbation have been very small since the disrupting event.

A new radiochemical procedure is described for the determination of lead-210 and polonium-210 in sea water. These nuclides are concentrated by coprecipitation with calcium carbonate from a sea water sample of large volume and then separated from calcium by formation of the hydroxides. Polonium-210 is deposited spontaneously onto a silver disc and determined by an α-counting technique. Lead-210 is also determined by counting the activity of polonium-210 produced during storage for 3 months.
