Photocatalytic CO

Developing highly active and stable nanocarbon catalysts for selective oxidation reactions has attracted much attention due to their potential as an alternative to traditional metal-based or noble metal catalysts. However, the nature of active sites and the reaction mechanism of nanocarbon catalysts for oxidation reactions still remains largely unknown, which hinders the rational design and development of highly efficient carbon-based catalysts. Here we report a facile strategy for the synthesis of boron and nitrogen co-doped carbon nanosheet material (BNC), which exhibits excellent catalytic activity with 91% conversion and 99% selectivity in selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol into benzaldehyde, superior to those of traditional carbon materials (oxidized carbon nanotubes, graphites and commercial nanocarbons). Structural characterizations and kinetic measurements are studied to clarify the active site, in which phenolic hydroxyl on BNC is responsible for the production of benzaldehyde. Meanwhile, we put forward a possible reaction mechanism and point out the key factors in determining the reactivity for this reaction. Therefore, the present work provides new insight into structure–function relationships, paving the way for the development of highly efficient nanocarbon catalysts.

Spermatogonia are accountable for spermatogenesis and male fertility, but the underlying mechanisms involved in spermatogonia maintenance are not clear. B lymphoma Mo-MLV insertion region 1 (BMI1) is a key component of epigenetic silencers. BMI1 is essential for stem-cell maintenance. Here, we attempted to uncover the role of BMI1 in spermatogonia maintenance using a mouse spermatogonia cell line (GC-1) and Bmi1-knockout (KO) mouse model. We showed that BMI1 promoted the proliferation and inhibited apoptosis of GC-1 cells. Mechanistically, we present in vitro and in vivo evidence to show that BMI1 binds to the promoter region of the Protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor type M (PTPRM) gene, thereby driving chromatin remodeling and gene silencing. Knockdown of Ptprm expression significantly improved spermatogonia proliferation in BMI1-deficient GC-1 cells. Collectively, our data show, for the first time, an epigenetic mechanism involving in BMI1-mediated gene silencing in spermatogonia maintenance, and provide potential targets for the treatment of male infertility.

Purpose Chemotherapy and concurrent thoracic radiation therapy (CCTRT) followed by prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) is the standard of care for limited-stage small cell lung cancer (LS-SCLC). We aimed to compare the efficacy and toxicity of moderately hypofractionated once-daily CCTRT with that of a standard twice-daily regimen. Methods and Materials This multicenter, phase 2, randomized study enrolled patients aged 18 to 75 years old who had pathologically confirmed LS-SCLC and an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0 to 1. Eligible patients received 4 to 6 cycles of etoposide-cisplatin chemotherapy and were randomized to receive twice-daily CCTRT at 45 Gray (Gy) in 30 fractions or once-daily CCTRT at 65 Gy in 26 fractions, commencing with cycles 1 to 3 of chemotherapy. PCI was given to good responders. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS). Results The analyses included 182 patients, with 94 in the twice-daily group and 88 in the once-daily group. CCTRT started with cycle 3 of chemotherapy for most patients (80.2%). At a median follow-up of 24.3 months, the median PFS was 13.4 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 10.8-16.0) in the twice-daily group versus 17.2 months (95% CI, 11.8-22.6) in the once-daily group (P = .031), with 2-year PFS rates of 28.4% (95% CI, 18.2-38.6) and 42.3% (95% CI, 31.1-53.5), respectively. The estimated overall survival was 33.6 months in the twice-daily group versus 39.3 months in the once-daily group (P = .137). The median locoregional PFS was 23.9 months in the twice-daily group and was not reached in the once-daily group (P = .017). The incidences of most toxicities were similar in both groups, except for a higher incidence of ≥grade 3 acute lymphopenia in the once-daily group (71.7% vs 40.2% in the twice-daily group; P Conclusions Moderately hypofractionated, once-daily CCTRT showed improved PFS and similar toxicities compared with twice-daily CCTRT in LS-SCLC. This regimen should be evaluated for comparison in a phase 3 randomized trial.

Surface engineering of quantum dots (QDs) plays critical roles in tailoring carriers’ dynamics of I-III-VI QDs via the interplay of QDs in aggregates or assembly, thus influencing their photocatalytic activities. In this work, an aqueous synthesis and the followed pH tuned oriented assembly method are developed to prepare network-like aggregates, dispersion, or sheet-like assembly of GSH-capped Silver Indium Sulfide (AIS). FTIR, DLS, and HRTEM investigation revealed that surface protonation or deprotonation of QDs occurred at pH 12 favors the formation of network-like aggregates with various defects or sheet-like assembly with perfect crystal lattice, respectively, via the surface charge induced interaction among AIS QDs. Further UV–vis, steady and transient PL investigation confirm the narrowed band gaps and the prolonged PL lifetime of the acidic network-like aggregates. As a result, the optimized network-like aggregates (3.0-AIS) exhibits superior photocatalytic H2 evolution (PHE) rates (5.2 mmol·g−1·h−1), about 113 times that of alkaline sheet-like assembly (13.0-AIS) or 2.7 times higher than that of dispersed AIS QDs (AIS-8.0). The formation of defects and their roles in PHE mechanisms are discussed. This work is expected to give some new insight for designing efficient non-cadmium/non-novel metal I-III-VI photocatalysts for boosting PHE.

We propose metasurface holograms as a novel platform to generate optical trap arrays for cold atoms with high fidelity, efficiency, and thermal stability. We developed design and fabrication methodologies to create dielectric, phase-only metasurface holograms based on titanium dioxide. We experimentally demonstrated optical trap arrays of various geometries, including periodic and aperiodic configurations with dimensions ranging from 1D to 3D and the number of trap sites up to a few hundred. We characterized the performance of the holographic metasurfaces in terms of the positioning accuracy, size and intensity uniformity of the generated traps, and power handling capability of the dielectric metasurfaces. Our proposed platform has great potential for enabling fundamental studies of quantum many-body physics, and quantum simulation and computation tasks. The compact form factor, passive nature, good power handling capability, and scalability of generating high-quality, large-scale arrays also make the metasurface platform uniquely suitable for realizing field-deployable devices and systems based on cold atoms.

In this paper, a fuzzy torque vectoring differential controller is proposed to improve the lateral stability for the two-motor-wheel drive electric buses with low sensor cost and computational cost. In order to know the unmeasured sideslip angle, unscented Kalman filter algorithm is used to accurately estimate the sideslip angle based on a nonlinear electric bus model and the measured yaw rate and lateral acceleration signals. Given the advantages of high computational efficiency and human’s heuristic knowledge, fuzzy rules are newly designed to control the torque vectoring differentials, and thereby to provide an extra yaw moment on the electric bus body to compensate the driver steering aiming at stability enhancement. To validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed fuzzy torque vectoring differential controller, hardware-in-the-loop tests were carried out to evaluate the controller performance in real-time under different driving maneuvers and road conditions. The test results indicate that the fuzzy torque vectoring differential controller can significantly improve the handling and path-following accuracy for the two-motor-wheel drive electric buses.

Atherosclerosis and depression contribute to each other; however, mechanisms linking them at the genetic level remain unexplored. This study aimed to identify shared gene signatures and related pathways between these comorbidities.Atherosclerosis-related datasets were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Differential and weighted gene co-expression network analyses were employed to identify atherosclerosis-related genes. Depression-related genes were downloaded from the DisGeNET database, and the overlaps between atherosclerosis-related genes and depression-related genes were characterized as crosstalk genes. The functional enrichment analysis and protein-protein interaction network were performed in these gene sets. Subsequently, the Boruta algorithm and Recursive Feature Elimination algorithm were performed to identify feature-selection genes. A support vector machine was constructed to measure the accuracy of calculations, and two external validation sets were included to verify the results.Based on two atherosclerosis-related datasets (GSE28829 and GSE43292), 165 genes were determined as atherosclerosis-related genes. Meanwhile, 1478 depression-related genes were obtained. After intersecting, 24 crosstalk genes were identified, and two pathways, "lipid and atherosclerosis" and "tryptophan metabolism," were revealed as mutual pathways according to the enrichment analysis results. Through the protein-protein interaction network, Molecular Complex Detection plugin, and cytoHubba plugin, PTPRC and MMP9 were identified as the hub gene. Moreover, SLC22A3, CASP1, AMPD3, and PIK3CG were recognized as feature-selection genes. Based on two external validation sets, CASP1 and MMP9 were finally determined as the critical crosstalk genes."Lipid and atherosclerosis" and "tryptophan metabolism" were possibly the pathways of atherosclerosis secondary to depression and depression due to atherosclerosis, respectively. CASP1 and MMP9 were revealed as the most pivotal candidates linking atherosclerosis and depression by mediating these two pathways. Further experimentation is needed to confirm these conclusions.

In this study, a novel carboxymethyl dextran (CMD)-based dual drug delivery system that delivering two water insoluble drugs to tumor sites was developed and evaluated for anticancer activities. Paclitaxel (PTX) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were covalently coupled with CMD to generate CMD-DHA-PTX conjugate S and conjugate L with different linkers containing amino acids Gly-Gly or Lys-Gly-Gly, respectively. Both conjugates possessed high PTX loading contents and enhanced water solubility, as well as the ability of being self-assembled into nanoparticles with the nanoparticle size ranged from 88.7 nm to 94.7 nm. These two conjugates released free PTX continuously in plasma and cancer cells. The conjugate S exhibited improved pharmacokinetic parameters and higher distribution extent in tumor sites than the parent PTX, Abraxane and the conjugate L. The antitumor efficacy of these two conjugates outperformed parent PTX formulation and Abraxane in nude mice bearing breast cancer cells MCF-7. More importantly, the conjugate S treatment eliminated all the xenograft tumors without causing any mice body weight loss in mice model. This study revealed that the dextran-based dual drug conjugates may represent an effective and innovative way to deliver anticancer agents to a variety of tumors.

The T cell receptor (TCR) repertoire is closely related to T cell activation and proliferation and mediates innate and adaptive immunity. High-throughput sequencing of the TCR enables comprehensive monitoring of the immune microenvironment. Certified reference materials (CRMs) with high accuracy and traceability are essential tools for the validation of analytical methods and calibration of equipment. In this study, purity CRMs for four polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) esters, namely, cis-(4,7,10,13,16,19)- Docosahexaenoic acid methyl ester (DHA-ME), cis-4,7,10,13,16,19- Docosahexaenoic acid ethyl ester (DHA-EE), cis-(5,8,11,14,17)- Eicosapentaenoic acid methyl ester (EPA-ME) and cis-(5,8,11,14,17)- Eicosapentaenoic acid ethyl ester (EPA-EE), were first developed according to the ISO Guide. The CRMs' purity values were assigned based on the average of quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance and mass balance approaches. The certified value with expanded uncertainties (k = 2, 95% confidence interval) were determined to be (98.8 ± 0.4) %, (99.0 ± 0.3) %, (98.9 ± 0.4) % and (98.9 ± 0.4) % for DHA-ME, DHA-EE, EPA-ME and EPA-EE, respectively. The four PUFAs esters were homogeneous and stable for 12 months at -4 °C and 7 days at 50 °C.

Rail transit investment has increased greatly because of its potential to attract choice riders to switch from driving to transit. However, there is limited knowledge about the impacts of rail transit on driving, particularly in fast-growing developing countries. Furthermore, many studies are subject to one or more limitations from methodological and practical perspectives. Using the 2014 data from Xi'an, this paper employs both cross-sectional and quasi-longitudinal analyses to examine how metro transit influences driving. The quasi-longitudinal analysis shows that moving into metro neighborhoods is negatively associated with change in driving although the cross-sectional analysis shows no effect. Therefore, the results based on cross-sectional analysis may be misleading. Taken all together, metro transit development and the design of station-area neighborhoods have the potential to reduce driving, and mitigate its impact on environment and slow the growth of traffic congestion.

Objectives Although environmental exposure to multiple metals is common, epidemiological studies on the associations of exposure to 23 metals with kidney function have not been analyzed. We aimed to investigate the associations of 23 metals levels with renal function. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study in four rural regions of Hunan province. Plasma and urine metals levels were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Two-level logistic regression was used to investigate the associations of metals levels with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) with adjustment for confounding factors. We conducted a sensitivity analysis of the results using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation. Results A total of 3553 participants completed the investigation. Five metals (plasma arsenic and molybdenum; urine copper, rubidium, and strontium) were identified to be significantly associated with renal function. Participants in the highest quartile of plasma arsenic and molybdenum were at 17.95 (95% CI: 6.35–50.76) and 24.23 (95% CI: 7.42–79.19) fold risk of abnormal eGFR, respectively, compared with the lowest quartile. The highest quartiles of urine copper, rubidium, and strontium were associated with 3.70 (95% CI:1.92–7.14), 0.16 (95% CI:0.07–0.37) and 0.08 (95% CI: 0.03–0.21) fold risk of abnormal eGFR. The sensitivity analysis revealed that plasma arsenic, molybdenum and urine copper, rubidium and strontium levels retained similar associations with abnormal eGFR. Conclusion Plasma arsenic and molybdenum, and urine copper are risk factors for abnormal renal function, while urine rubidium and strontium are protective factors for renal function.

A series of Cu2O/(Ag0@Ag-NPs)x(x = 0.0–0.25) thermocatalysts were synthesized via one-step reaction of Cu2+ and Ag+ ions with glucose in alkaline solution. The morphological, structural, optical and electrochemical properties of the thermocatalysts were investigated in detail. The results reveal that Cu2O and metallic Ag grow together to form a composite core (Cu2O/Ag0), while the core surface was coated by metallic Ag nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) as a shell. Owing to the imperfection of surface lattice of Cu2O caused by close contacting with metallic Ag, a new interface state level generates in the band gap of Cu2O. Moreover, Ag-NPs shell exhibits strong thermal radiation effect and surface plasma resonance (SPR) effect, so Cu2O/Ag0@Ag-NPs catalyst can be activated by absorbing heat energy. Due to the action of Schottky barriers, electrons easily migrate to the surface and combine with O2 to generate O2− radicals. Therefore, Cu2O/Ag0@Ag-NPs thermocatalyst can efficiently degrade high concentration dye (200 mg/L Acid Orange 7) under dark condition at room temperature. The mechanism study proved that O2−, eCB− and hVB+ play critical roles in the degradation of AO7. Electrons (eCB−) activated by heat energy react with O2 to generate O2− radical, O2− radicals induce the degradation reaction, while surplus holes (hVB+) react directly with dye. The experimental result of different irradiation source shows that Cu2O/(Ag0@Ag-NPs)x materials are high-performance thermal and photo catalysts, implying promising application in the degradation of dye wastewater on an industrial scale for all day operation.

The increasing number of deaths caused by drug poisoning indicates that a rapid and accurate method to identify the type of drugs is critically needed to provide a real-time and effective treatment for poisoned patients. In this report, a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) analysis method for the detection of phenformin hydrochloride and atypical antipsychotics in plasma was successfully developed. Colloidal silver, prepared by a redox reaction of hydroxylamine and silver nitrate, was used as a SERS substrate. The pH condition and the sample incubation time for each drug were also explored to improve SERS enhancement factor. Based on these, phenformin hydrochloride and atypical antipsychotics (quetiapine fumarate, risperidone, olanzapine and clozapine) in plasma at concentration of 10−6 M were detected successfully. Thus, we provided a potentially method for rapid diagnosis of acute drugs poisoning.

Shenmai injection (SMI) is a patented traditional Chinese medicine that is extracted from Panax ginseng and Ophiopogon japonicus and is commonly used to treat cardiovascular diseases and tumors. The O. japonicus extract Ophiopogonin D' (OPD') is highly cardiotoxic. Mitochondria are central to OPD'-induced cardiotoxicity, although the precise mechanisms remain unclear. Excessive mitophagy activation and mitochondrial dysfunction lead to apoptosis, and the PTEN-induced kinase 1(PINK1)/Parkin pathway is critical in regulating mitophagy and mitochondrial function. We investigated the role of the PINK1/Parkin pathway in OPD'-induced mitochondrial damage and cardiotoxicity in AC16 cells. Concentrations of 2 μM OPD' and above inhibited cardiomyocyte viability and increased lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. OPD' was toxic to cells and mitochondria and increased the rate of apoptosis, triggering pyknosis, decreasing mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and decreasing the protein expression of the biogenesis regulator peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator-1 alpha (PGC-1α). The increased ratio of microtubule-associated proteins 1 A/1B light chain 3B (LC3-II/LC3-I) in mitochondria indicated that OPD' induced mitophagy. OPD' significantly induced oxidative stress and apoptosis, including increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and decreased nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1(HO-1), and B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) protein expression. OPD' activated the PINK1/Parkin pathway and promoted PINK1/Parkin translocation to mitochondria. Inhibiting mitophagy attenuated OPD'-induced PINK1/Parkin pathway activation and preserved mitochondrial biogenesis, consequently mitigating OPD'-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis. These findings suggest that OPD'-induced cardiomyocyte mitophagy and mitochondrial damage are at least partially mediated by dysregulation of the PINK1/Parkin pathway.

Exposure to single metals have been linked to childhood behavior problems, But little is known about the effects of metals mixtures on children. We aimed to evaluate associations of multiple metals exposures in urine with childhood behavior in China. For this population-based study, the children eligible for inclusion provided urine samples and their parents agreed to take in-person interview. A total of 831 children were remained from three cities for the final analysis. Urinary metals concentrations were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The childhood behavior scores was calculated by the Conners' Parent Rating Scale (CPRS). Variable selection was achieved by the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regularization and stepwise regression to for all metals in the study. Linear regression models and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were applied to estimate the associations of urinary metals concentrations with children's behavior. In BKMR models, the overall effect of mixture was significantly associated with conduct problems, learning problems and hyperactive index when urinary metals concentrations were all above the 50th percentile compared to all of them at their medians. The Cry1Ab toxin is usually expressed in genetically modified crops in order to control chewing pests. Although the gold immunochromatography assay (GICA) based on the double-antibody sandwich method has been developed to detect this toxin, its detection sensitivity needs improvement. In this study, Cry1Ab-51 antibodies were immobilized orientationally in a simple and effective way on colloidal gold nanoparticles (CGNPs) using the affinity of staphylococcal protein A (SPA) towards the fragment crystallizable (FC) fragment of mouse immunoglobulin G (IgG). Lateral flow detection test strips, assembled with probes labeled with orientational methods under optimal operational conditions (new probe), were 10 times more sensitive than test strips assembled with probes labeled by adsorption (conventional probe). Experiments showed that the affinity of the new probe was much higher than the conventional probe. The immunochromatography gold strip (ICG strip) assembled using the new probe was highly specific to Cry1Ab with no cross-reaction with other transgenic proteins, and it was proved that the specificity of the new probe had no change. Furthermore, the ICG strips assembled with the new probe could be stored for 12 months under dry conditions without a significant loss of sensitivity. The orientational labeling of the antibodies with SPA on colloidal gold proved to be suitable for improving the sensitivity of the ICG strips.
