In this work, Ag/Bi5O7I nanocomposite was prepared and firstly applied in piezo/photocatalytic reduction of N2 to NH3 and methyl orange (MO) degradation. Bi5O7I was synthesized via a hydrothermal-calcination method and shows nanorods morphology. Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were photo deposited on the Bi5O7I nanorods as electron trappers to improve the spatial separation of charge carriers, which was confirmed via XPS, TEM, and electronic chemical analyses. The catalytic test indicates that Bi5O7I presents the piezoelectric-like behavior, while the loading of Ag NPs can strengthen the character. Under ultrasonic vibration, the optimal Ag/Bi5O7I presents high efficiency in MO degradation. The degradation rate is determined to be 0.033 min−1, which is 4.7 folds faster than that of Bi5O7I. The Ag/Bi5O7I also presents a high performance in piezocatalytic N2 fixation. The piezocatalytic NH3 generation rate reaches 65.4 μmol L−1 g−1 h−1 with water as a hole scavenger. The addition of methanol can hasten the piezoelectric catalytic reaction. Interestingly, when ultrasonic vibration and light irradiation simultaneously act on the Ag/Bi5O7I catalyst, higher performance in NH3 generation and MO degradation is observed. However, due to the weak adhesion of Ag NPs, some Ag NPs would fall off from the Bi5O7I surface under long-term ultrasonic vibration, which would greatly reduce the piezoelectric catalytic performance. This result indicates that a strong binding force is required when preparing the piezoelectric composite catalyst. The current work provides new insights for the development of highly efficient catalysts that can use multiple energies.

Paraquat (PQ) is a highly water-soluble, non-selective herbicide. Due to water pollution and lack of specific medicines, it is extremely harmful to humans and aquatic animals. Oxidative stress and apoptosis can affect the immune function of the body. However, the effects and mechanisms of PQ on the immune function, apoptosis and programmed necrosis on CIK cells are still unclear. Therefore, we constructed low (L, 50 μmol/L), medium (M, 100 μmol/L), and high (H, 150 μmol/L) dose models of PQ exposure on CIK cells. The expression of oxidative stress-related indexes (MDA, CAT, GSH-Px and SOD) and interrelated genes were examined by flow cytometry, qRT-PCR, and western blotting methods. Our data demonstrated that PQ treatment caused an increase in MDA content and the decreases in the activities of antioxidase and antioxidants (SOD, GSH-Px and CAT) on CIK cells (p 0.05). We also discovered the PTEN/PI3K/AKT pathway was significantly activated in a dose dependent manner (p 0.05). Furthermore, the proportion of programmed necrosis cells increased dramatically at PQ doses from 0 μmol/L to 150 μmol/L. Apoptosis and necrosis-related genes also showed dose-dependent changes (p 0.05). Briefly, PQ exposure leads to apoptosis and programmed necrosis via the oxidative stress and PTEN/PI3K/AKT pathway, thereby causing immune dysfunction of CIK cells. This study enriches the toxic influences of PQ on the cells of aquatic organisms and provides a reference for comparative medicine.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (M. hyopneumoniae, Mhp) are two of the most common pathogens involved in the porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC) resulting in significant economic losses worldwide. Vaccination is the most effective approach to disease prevention. Since PRRSV and Mhp co-infections are very common, an efficient dual vaccine against these pathogens is required for the global swine industry. Compared with traditional vaccines, multi-epitope vaccines have several advantages, they are comparatively easy to produce and construct, are chemically stable, and do not have an infectious potential. In this study, to develop a safe and effective vaccine, B cell and T cell epitopes of PRRSV-GP5, PRRSV-M, Mhp-P46, and Mhp-P65 protein had been screened to construct a recombinant epitope protein rEP-PM that has good hydrophilicity, strong antigenicity, and high surface accessibility, and each epitope is independent and complete. After immunization in mice, rEP-PM could induce the production of high levels of antibodies, and it had good immunoreactivity with anti-rEP-PM, anti-PRRSV, and anti-Mhp antibodies. The anti-rEP-PM antibody specifically recognizes proteins from PRRSV and Mhp. Moreover, rEP-PM induced a Th1-dominant cellular immune response in mice. Our results showed that the rEP-PM protein could be a potential candidate for the development of a safe and effective multi-epitope peptide combined vaccine to control PRRSV and Mhp infections.

Aging plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD), but its effect on dynein is not clear. In this study we analyzed behavioral characteristics using the rod endurance test and climbing rod time test in different aged mice (3 months, 12 months, 20 months), and measured protein expression of dynein, α-synuclein, Tctex-1, and LC3 in the substantianigra of the mice by Western blot. This work synthesized a novel CuS/KTa0.75Nb0.25O3 (KTN) heterojunction composite and firstly applied it in photocatalytic and piezocatalytic reduction of N2 to NH3. XRD, Raman, XPS, SEM, and TEM analyses indicate that CuS nanoparticles closely adhered to the surface of KTN nanorods, which facilitates the migration of electrons between the two semiconductors. Mott-Schottky and valence band XPS analysis shows that KNbO3 shows a higher conduction band than CuS, indicating that CuS mainly acts as electron trappers to capture the photogenerated electrons from KTN. Because of the great enhanced spatial separation of photogenerated charge carriers, the CuS/KTN presents much higher performance than pure KNT, which is further confirmed by 1H NMR analysis of the reaction solution. An interesting finding is that synthesized CuS/KTN not only performs well under light irradiation but also can work in an ultrasonic bath, indicating its great potential in photo/piezocatalytic conversion of N2 to NH3. The optimal 10 %CuS/KTN shows an NH3 production rate of 36.2 μmol L−1 g−1 h−1 under ultrasonic vibration, which reaches 7.4 times that of KTN. The electrons generated by KTN through the piezoelectric effect can be captured by CuS, which endows the electrons a longer life to participate in the reaction, thereby improving the catalytic reaction performance.

Uncontrollable dendrite growth and poor reversibility of lithium (Li) metal anode hinder the practical implementation of Li metal based batteries. Herein, we report a feasible and scalable electrospraying strategy for fabricating a vertically aligned graphene (VAG) pillar architecture with low tortuosity and high specific surface area as both current collector and host material for Li metal anode. Columnar and dense Li with large granular size plates into the VAG electrode by the aid of the pillar structure, which could ensure continuous ion transfer and lower actual current density for uniform nucleation, as well as provide more accommodation with proper space size. The hollow graphene pillars and the surrounding sufficient space enables smooth Li plating under high capacity depth and abstains volume fluctuation of the whole electrode. The VAG pillar modified Li anode delivers low overpotential of 25 mV over 280 h under a high rate of 3 mA cm−2, and high Coulombic efficiencies for 250 cycles at a capacity of 1 mAh cm−2. More importantly, full cells paired with the high capacity LiFePO4 cathode exhibit excellent cycling stability and rate capability, demonstrating the high Li utilization efficiency and improved ion migration kinetic in the low tortuous VAG architecture.

As emerging energy storage systems, potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are suitable for grid-scale energy storage application due to the abundant potassium resources and low cost. It is crucial to achieve fast-charging PIBs. However, as the most promising anode candidate, graphite still faces setbacks in achieving fast charging due to poor kinetic issue. Herein, modified graphite (MG) is synthesized to realize the fast potassium ion storage. Benefiting from the enlarged graphitic space combined with unique porous microstructure, MG exhibits outstanding electrochemical performance. The optimized MG anode delivers a specific capacity of 115 mAh g−1 at 4 A g−1 and excellent cycling stability of 1500 cycles at 1 A g−1. Moreover, the full cell assembled with MG anode and Prussian Blue (PB) cathode exhibits a capacity retention of 75% after 20000 cycles at the current density of 1 A g−1. The excellent electrochemical performance is further demonstrated to be associated with dominant pseudo-capacitance behavior, i.e. surface or near-surface reversible redox reactions, which are less affected by solid electrolyte interface (SEI) than intercalation reactions. Our work proposes a strategy to optimize graphitic anode materials by regulating the microstructure and may provide insight into the synthesis of high rate carbon-based anode materials for PIBs.

The aim of this research was to prepare a bistratal nanocomplex with a high loading capacity (LC) and harsh environment stability for controlled release of curcumin (Cur) in gastrointestinal conditions. Whey protein isolate (WPI)/short linear glucan (SLG) core-shell nanoparticles were fabricated by self-assembly for the delivery of Cur. The results showed that Cur@WPI@SLG nanoparticles had a relatively high LC (12.89 %) and small particle size (89.4 nm). The nanocomplex remained relatively stable in extreme pH conditions (2-4 and 8-10), high temperatures (60-70 °C), and ionic strength (400 mM). Core-shell nanostructures facilitated the sustained release of Cur in simulated gastrointestinal conditions. In addition, the nanocomplex had little cytotoxicity at high concentrations, yet significantly enhanced the DPPH scavenging activity and reducing power of Cur. This delivery system will significantly improve the sustained release effect of Cur and broaden the application of hydrophobic nutrients in foods.

Sodium and potassium metal batteries are being developed and studied enthusiastically by researchers, but the electrochemical deposition mechanism of sodium and potassium are still elusive and considered as analogs of the lithium version. In this study, it is found that the deposition of sodium and potassium are different from lithium. During deposition, cations get electrons and turn into metal deposited beneath the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), and consequently the SEI is subject to the pressure from the metal around the deposition sites. Under the pressure, the SEI of lithium is strong enough to keep its integrity, which leads to the root growth of deposits. The lithium deposits are whiskers with the diameter of submicrometer and can be blocked by separators with the pores of dozens of nanometers. By contrast, the SEIs of sodium and potassium are weak and break into fragments under the pressure, and the subsequent deposition occur on the metal surfaces. The deposits grow into micro-scale granules and spread through the nanopores of separators, which causes the short circuit.

As a promising anode for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), graphite has drawn great attention due to easy availability, low cost and formation of potassium-based intercalation compound. However, poor cyclic and rate performances due to severe structural degradation limit the practical application of graphite anode. Herein, a low cost mildly-expanded graphite (MEG) with adjustable interlayer lattice distance is synthesized through a wet chemical oxidation route. As anode for PIBs, the MEG exhibited stable intercalation/deintercalation plateaus, outstanding cyclic stability and rate performance. By optimizing the mass ratio between graphite and potassium permanganate oxidant, the MEG anode retaining long-range-ordered domains of graphite delivers a capacity of 88 mAh/g at 1500 mA/g and a capacity retention of 72.3% after 200 cycles at 100 mA/g. The potassium ion full cell assembled with MEGs anode exhibites high energy density and outstanding cyclic stability. Our results demonstrate a promising graphite-based anode for PIBs and provide guidance for the designing of novel carbonic electrodes for PIBs.

In this study, zein/hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin nanoparticles (ZHNPs) were synthesized using a combination of antisolvent co-precipitation and electrostatic attraction. The structural and physicochemical properties of the NPs were characterized using a variety of analytical methods. NPs with small mean diameters (143.6 nm) and strong cationic surface potentials (+62.1 mV) could be obtained at a mass ratio of zein-to-HP-β-CD of 1:1. These NPs were then used to encapsulate a model hydrophobic nutraceutical, curcumin. The results of zeta-potential, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and fluorescence spectroscopy measurements suggested that electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions were the main driving forces for NPs formation and curcumin encapsulation. The NPs had a relatively high encapsulation efficiency (89.41 %) for curcumin and improved its antioxidant activity (3.6-fold that of free curcumin) and photostability. Consequently, they could be used as effective food-grade delivery systems for low water-soluble bioactive substances.

Ingesting microplastics (MPs) from plastic tableware is an important source of health risk to human bodies. However, the comprehensive information of MPs released from disposable tableware has not been explored. Herein, a new visual quantification method for polystyrene MPs is proposed with carbon nitride fluorescent polymers staining, which can overcome the disadvantages of high signal background and photobleaching derived from organic dyes staining. Combining with fluorescence microscope and ImageJ software, the quantity, shape, and size distribution of MPs carried by the brand-new disposable polystyrene tableware (DPT) samples before usage and released from the clean DPT samples in different simulated usage scenes were studied. The brand-new DPT samples were found to carry a large number of MPs particles and the clean DPT samples could release MPs during usage. Fiber and fragment are the main morphology of the detected MPs and fiber accounts for 45-52 %. The particles with size50 μm are the majority of the detected MPs and the distribution fraction of MPs particles is gradually decreased with the raising of particle size within 50 μm. The released MPs particles are increased with the raising of contact time and temperature, and greatly boosted for the DPT samples with cracks. The DPT samples are more like to release MPs in weak acidic condition (pH 4.0) than in weak alkaline (pH 8.3) and neutral (pH 7.0) conditions. The obtained results help to assess the food safety of tack-out food and the health risk of MPs exposure to human.
