Puerarin has been shown to have a good antidepressant effect, and our previous study found that it can remedy stress-induced dysbiosis. However, its gut microbiota-related mechanism has not been fully elucidated. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the potential link between puerarin on gut microbiota and inflammatory responses in depressed rats.A chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) rat model of depression was established, open field test (OFT), sucrose preference test (SPT) and forced swimming test (FST) were used to evaluate its antidepressant effect. 16S rRNA sequencing was performed to identify the rat fecal microflora. At the same time, inflammatory cytokines, colonic histopathological changes, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), inhibitor a of NF-κB (IκB-α) protein expression were detected.Puerarin attenuated CUMS-induced depressive-like behavior and gut microbiota dysregulation in rats, significantly reducing the abundance of harmful bacteria such as Desulfovibrio, Verrucomicrobiae, and Verrucomicrobia. In addition, puerarin can also reduce the pro-inflammatory factors and increase the level of anti-inflammatory factors in depressed rats, improve the damaged colon tissue, enhance the expression of BDNF and IκB-α in the hippocampus and inhibit the expression of NF-κB.Direct evidence that puerarin improves depressive-like behaviors via gut microbiota is lacking.The underlying mechanism of puerarin's antidepressant-like effect is closely related to the bidirectional communication of the microbiota-gut-brain axis by regulating the inflammatory response.

Rare-earth Sm doped BaTiO3 ceramics were prepared by a solid-state reaction method, and the structures and dielectric properties were examined. Both tetragonality and phase-transition temperature decreased with increasing doping content. Colossal dielectric constant and dielectric relaxations were observed and were attributed to the inhomogeneous structure and interface-polarization effect. The multi-relaxation phenomenon depends on the doping content and reflects the complex inhomogeneity of the samples. The relaxation processes are closely related to the electrical resistances of the grain, and the activation energies depend on the crystal structures.

Background Puerarin is an isoflavone derivative isolated from the traditional Chinese medicine Pueraria Lobelia, which has proven to relieve depression-like behavior. However, its underlying antidepressant mechanisms have been poorly characterized. Herein, we explored whether Puerarin's antidepressant effect is associated with changes in the gut microbiota (GM). Methods The model of depression in mice featuring chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) was eastablished, and its antidepressant effect was estimated by sugar water preference and forced swimming test. Genomic DNA extracted from fecal samples was employed to sequence the 16S rRNA gene for gut microbiota identification. Results Puerarin (100 mg/kg) treatment was found to alleviate the CUMS-induced depression-like behaviors. Furthermore, chronic stress led to pathological microbial flora, which was principally marked by the increased abundance of pathogenic bacteria (Proteobacteria, Flexispira, Desulfovibrio) and the decreased abundance of beneficial bacteria (Firmicutes, Bacillales, Lactobacillus). Intriguingly, puerarin treatment reversed these changes. Limitations The specific role and anti-depression mechanism of characteristic gut microflora were not confirmed. Conclusion Puerarin can remedy stress-induced disruptions of normal gut microflora. It is suggested that the antidepressant mechanism of puerarin may closely interact with restoring beneficial microflora.

Bladder cancer is the most common malignant tumor of the urinary system, however there are several shortcomings in current diagnostic and therapeutic measures. In terms of diagnosis, the diagnostic tools currently available are not sufficiently sensitive and specific, and imaging is poor, leading to misdiagnosis and missed diagnoses, which can delay treatment. In terms of treatment, current treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, gene therapy, and other emerging treatments, as well as combination therapies. However, the main reasons for poor efficacy and side effects during treatment are the lack of specificity and targeting, improper dose control of drugs and photosensitizers, damage to normal cells while attacking cancer cells, and difficulty in delivering siRNA to cancer cells. Nanomedicine is an emerging approach. Among the many nanotechnologies applied in the medical field, nanocarrier-assisted drug delivery systems have attracted extensive research interest due to their great translational value. Well-designed nanoparticles can deliver agents or drugs to specific cell types within target organs through active targeting or passive targeting (enhanced permeability and retention), which allows for imaging, diagnosis, as well as treatment of cancer. This paper reviews advances in the application of various nanocarriers and their advantages and drawbacks, with a focus on their use in the diagnosis and treatment of bladder cancer.

Nitrous acid (HONO) can significantly contribute to hydroxyl radicals (OH) and thus regulate atmospheric oxidation chemistry; however, ambient HONO sources are not well quantified and vary in different environments. Automatic cough detection in the patients’ realistic audio recordings is of great significance to diagnose and monitor respiratory diseases, such as COVID-19. Many detection methods have been developed so far, but they are still unable to meet the practical requirements. In this paper, we present a deep convolutional bidirectional long short-term memory (C-BiLSTM) model with boundary regression for cough detection, where cough and non-cough parts need to be classified and located. We added convolutional layers before the LSTM to enhance the cough features and preserve the temporal information of the audio data. Considering the importance of the cough event integrity for subsequent analysis, the novel model includes an embedded boundary regression on the last feature map for both higher detection accuracy and more accurate boundaries. We delicately designed, collected and labelled a realistic audio dataset containing recordings of patients with respiratory diseases, named the Corp Dataset. 168 h of recordings with 9969 coughs from 42 different patients are included. The dataset is published online on the MARI Lab website (https://mari.tongji.edu.cn/info/1012/1030.htm). The results show that the system achieves a sensitivity of 84.13%, a specificity of 99.82% and an intersection-over-union (IoU) of 0.89, which is significantly superior to other related models. With the proposed method, all the criteria on cough detection significantly increased. The open source Corp Dataset provides useful material and a benchmark for researchers investigating cough detection. We propose the state-of-the-art system with boundary regression, laying the foundation for identifying cough sounds in real-world audio data.

A two-step acid decomposition method is proposed to separate tungsten and molybdenum from W(VI)-Mo(VI) mixed solution. The first step is used to precipitate H2WO4 and H2MoO4. The second step is adopted to leach H2MoO4 from the mixed acid precipitate selectively to achieve separation of W(VI) and Mo(VI). The Mo/WO3 mass ratio in a synthetic leach liquor can reach 440 via the above two steps. In addition, thermal decomposition of peroxy W and Mo acid mixed solution was used to separate a macro amount of W and Mo. After separation under experimental conditions, the Mo/WO3 mass ratio in the solution and WO3/Mo mass ratio in the precipitate reached 74 and 4.1, respectively.

Aim To evaluate the technical feasibility and treatment results of ultrasound (US)-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) combined with ethanol ablation (EA) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the caudate lobe. Materials and methods The institutional review board approved this retrospective study and the requirement for informed consent was waived. From October 2009 to June 2016, there were 49 patients with HCC in the caudate lobe underwent ablation. Among them, 14 patients (12 men and two women, mean age: 49.9±14.9 years) with 16 caudate lobe HCCs (mean size: 3±1.1 cm) who underwent US-guided RFA-EA were identified. These patients were compared with patients who underwent RFA alone (n=17) and EA alone (n=18). Results HCCs in the RFA-EA group were larger than those in the EA-alone group (3±1.1 versus 2.1±0.7 cm, p=0.028). In the RFA-EA group, all the patients achieved treatment success (14/14) and entered follow-up. After a follow-up period of 17.1±10.6 months (range, 5–36 months), local tumour progression (LTP) was detected in four tumours. The 1- and 2-year LTP rates after RFA-EA were 18.8% and 27.8%, respectively. The 1- and 2-year disease-free survival (DFS) rates were 35.7% and 13.4%. Six patients died, with the 1-, 2-, and 3-year overall survival (OS) rates of 85.1%, 63.1%, and 21%, respectively. There were no significant differences in the LTP, DFS, and OS rates between the RFA-EA group and RFA-alone or EA groups (p=0.363–0.733). Conclusion US-guided percutaneous RFA-EA appears to be a feasible and effective treatment for HCC in the caudate lobe.

In the present study, an integrated approach combining HPLC/DAD, GC/MS, near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, and chemometrics was used to geographically discriminate saffron samples from Iran and China. Chinese and Iranian samples can be well-separated based on HPLC data analysed by a principal component analysis and an orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis. Picrocrocin and two types of crocins were found to be the discriminating variables, and the Chinese samples had higher contents of safranal and picrocrocin but lower cis-crocin 3Gg, kaempferol-3-O-sophoroside and isophorone. Furthermore, an NIR method was successfully established to rapidly distinguish the Chinese and Iranian samples. The relationship between an ISO standard and the contents of the chemical indices was also studied. The results indicated that the ISO standard should be revised, especially for analysing safranal.

The heterogeneous reaction of dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5) on aerosols is an important sink of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the polluted boundary layer, and the production of nitryl chloride (ClNO2) can have significant effects on the atmospheric oxidative capacity. However, the heterogeneous loss of N2O5 and the formation of ClNO2 are still not well quantified, especially in China. In a previous study, we measured ClNO2 and N2O5 concentrations in several air masses at a high-elevation site in Hong Kong, and found the highest levels ever reported at one night. The present study employed an iterative box model to investigate five N2O5/ClNO2-laden nights. We first estimated the N2O5 uptake coefficient and ClNO2 yield and then calculated the relative importance of N2O5 heterogeneous reactions to NOx loss and the accumulated ClNO2 production over the entire night. The average uptake coefficient was 0.004±0.003, and the average yield was 0.42±0.26. As the air masses aged, the accumulated ClNO2 reached up to 6.0ppbv, indicating significant production of ClNO2 in the polluted air from the Pearl River Delta. ClNO2 formation (N2O5+Cl-), N2O5 hydrolysis (N2O5+H2O), and NO3 reactions with volatile organic compounds (NO3+VOCs) consumed 23%, 27%, and 47% of the produced NO3, respectively, as the average for five nights. A significant portion of the NOx in the air masses (70%±10%) was removed during the night via NO3 reactions with VOCs (~40%) and N2O5 heterogeneous loss (~60%).

Ethnopharmacological relevance The genus Viscum comprises approximately 100 species that are mainly distributed across Africa, Asia and Europe. The extracts and preparations of Viscum species are widely used as common complementary and alternative medicines in the treatment of rheumatism and cancer. Aim of the review This review aims to explore the medicinal properties of twelve species belonging to the genus Viscum for potential therapeutic applications. Materials and methods We collected online information (including PubMed, CNKI, Google Scholar, and Web of Science) from January 1915 to April 2021 and knowledge from classical books on Chinese herbal medicines available for 12 species of the genus Viscum, including Viscum coloratum (Kom.) Nakai, Viscum album L., Viscum articulatum Burm. f., Viscum liquidambaricola Hayata, Viscum ovalifolium DC., Viscum capitellatum Sm., Viscum cruciatum Sieber ex Boiss., Viscum nudum Danser, Viscum angulatum B.Heyne ex DC., Viscum tuberculatum A.Rich., Viscum multinerve Hayata, and Viscum diospyrosicola Hayata. Results At least 250 different compounds have been reported across twelve Viscum species, including amino acid and peptides, alkaloids, phenolic acids, flavonoids, terpenoids, carbohydrates, fatty acids, lipids, and other types of compounds. In particular, for Viscum coloratum (Kom.) Nakai and Viscum album L., the plants, preparations, and bioactive components have been thoroughly reviewed. This has allowed to elucidate the role of active components, including lectins, viscotoxins, flavonoids, terpenoids, phenolic acids, and polysaccharides, in multiple bioactivities, such as anti-cancer, anti-rheumatism arthralgia, anti-inflammation, anti-cardiovascular diseases, enhancing immunity, and anti-chemotherapy side effects. We also evaluated quality control methods based on active compounds, in vivo exposure compounds, and discriminated chemical markers. Conclusions This is the first report to systematically review the pharmaceutical development history, chemical composition, clinical evidence, pharmacological activity, discriminated chemical markers, in vivo exposure, and quality control on twelve distinct species of Viscum plants with medicinal properties. The significant safety and efficacy, along with the minor side effects are constantly confirmed in clinics. The genus Viscum is thus an important medicinal resource that is worth exploring and developing in future pharmacological and chemical studies.

Nitrous acid (HONO) plays an important role in radical formation and photochemical oxidation processes in the boundary layer. However, its impact on the chemistry in a street canyon microenvironment has not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we measured HONO in a street canyon in urban Hong Kong and used an observation-based box model (OBM) with the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM v3.3.1) to investigate the contribution of HONO to local oxidation chemistry. The observed HONO mixing ratios were in the range of 0.4–13.9 ppbv, with an average of 3.91 ppbv in the daytime and 2.86 ppbv at night. A mean HONO/NOx emission ratio of 1.0% (±0.5%) from vehicle traffic was derived. OBM simulations constrained by the observed HONO showed that the maximum concentrations of OH, HO2, and RO2 reached 4.65 × 106, 4.40 × 106, and 1.83 × 106 molecules cm−3, which were 7.9, 5.0, and 7.5 times, respectively, the results in the case without HONO constrained. Photolysis of HONO contributed to 86.5% of the total primary radical production rates and led to efficient NO2 and O3 production under the condition of weak regional transport of O3. The formation of HNO3 contributed to 98.4% of the total radical termination rates. Our results suggest that HONO could significantly increase the atmospheric oxidation capacity in a street canyon and enhance the secondary formation of HNO3 and HCHO, which can damage outdoor building materials and pose health risks to pedestrians.

Dinitrogen pentoxide (N 2 O 5 ) and its heterogeneous uptake product, nitryl chloride (ClNO 2 ), play important roles in the nocturnal boundary layer chemistry. To understand the abundances and chemistry of N 2 O 5 and ClNO 2 in the polluted urban atmosphere in North China, field measurements were conducted by deploying a chemical ionization mass spectrometer in urban Ji'nan in September 2014. The observed surface N 2 O 5 concentrations were relatively low, with an average nocturnal value of 22 pptv, although the source of NO 3 was rather strong, i.e., the NO 2 and O 3 were at very high levels. The N 2 O 5 concentration peaked in the early evening, which was associated with thermal power plant plumes and residual O 3 . Nocturnal N 2 O 5 was lost very rapidly, mainly through heterogeneous reactions on aerosol surfaces. The estimated N 2 O 5 uptake coefficient was in the range of 0.042–0.092, among the highest values obtained from ground based field measurements. The fast heterogeneous reaction of N 2 O 5 on high loadings of aerosols generated relatively high levels of ClNO 2, with an average nocturnal concentration of 132 pptv. Despite the rich chloride content in aerosols, the ClNO 2 product yield was low, 0.014 and 0.082 in two nighttime cases, much lower than the calculated values from the experiment-derived parameterization. The suppressed chlorine activation in polluted urban atmospheres was possibly associated with the reduced hygroscopicity, solubility, and activity of chloride in complex ambient aerosols.

The quality control processes for herbal medicines have been problematic. Flavonoids are the major active components of Huangqin Tang (HQT, a traditional Chinese medicine formula). In this study, we used a combinative method approach consisting of chromatographic fingerprinting (high performance liquid chromatography; HPLC), quantitative methods and a pharmacodynamic evaluation model to analyze the flavonoids of HQT obtained from different sources. Ten batches of HQT were analyzed by the HPLC fingerprinting method and 26 common peaks were detected, of which 23 peaks corresponded with the chemical profile of HQT. In addition, 11 major compounds were identified by LC–MS analysis (liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometer; LC–MSn) and quantified by the HPLC quantitative method approach. The studied 10 batches of HQT were found to be homogeneous in their composition with a similarity between 0.990 and 1.000. The distribution of the 11 identified compounds was found to be very similar among the batches. Only slight pharmacodynamic differences were detected between the different batches, confirming the homogeneity of HQT. Yuanhu Zhitong prescription (YZP) is well known for its analgesic effect. However, its multiple bioactive components in vivo remain unclear. In this paper, a rapid resolution liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight (RRLC-ESI-Q/TOF) was employed to identify the bioactive components and partial metabolites after oral administration of YZP extracts. Meanwhile, a RRLC-ESI-Q/TOF method was established and validated for the simultaneous quantification of protopine, α-allocryptopine, tetrahydropalmatine, corydaline, tetrahyberberine and byakangelicin in rat plasma and applied for their pharmacokinetic research. The results showed that twenty-one bioactive components of YZP were absorbed into the blood circulation and seventeen components were detected in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Moreover, the kinetic profiles of six analytes were obtained and the results suggested that the six analytes peaked between 3.5 and 5.0h and Cmax ranged from 214.6 to 858.3. The works could provide key information for identification of bioactive constituents and understanding the metabolism as well as pharmacological actions for YZP.
