Abstract

The effects of impeller type, stirring power, gas flow rate, and liquid concentration on the gas–liquid mixing in a shear-thinning system with a coaxial mixer were investigated by experiment, and the overall gas holdup, relative power demand, and volumetric mass transfer coefficient under different conditions were compared. The results show that, the increasing stirring power or gas flow rate is beneficial in promoting the overall gas holdup and volumetric mass transfer coefficient, while the increasing system viscosity weakens the mass transfer in a shearing–thinning system. Among the three turbines, the six curved-blade disc turbine (BDT-6) exhibits the best gas pumping capacity; the six 45° pitched-blade disc turbine (PBDT-6) has the highest volumetric mass transfer coefficient at the same unit volume power.

Abstract

The molecular imprinted TiO2/graphene photocatalyst (MIP-TiO2/GR) was successfully prepared with bisphenol A (BPA) as the template molecule (target pollutant) and o-phenylenediamine (OPDA) as functional monomers by the surface molecular imprinting method. The combination between BPA and OPDA led to the formation of the precursor, and the subsequent polymerization of OPDA initiated by ultraviolet radiation can ensure the realization of MIP-TiO2/GR. The samples were characterized by SEM, EDS, XRD, BET, UV–vis DRS and Zeta potential. In addition, adsorption capacities, adsorption selectivity and visible light photocatalytic performances of MIP-TiO2/GR and non-imprinted TiO2/graphene (NIP-TiO2/GR) were evaluated. Moreover, the effects of pH and initial BPA concentration on removal efficiency of BPA were also investigated. The results showed that MIP-TiO2/GR exhibited better adsorption capacity and adsorption selectivity towards the template molecule compared to NIP-TiO2/GR due to the imprinted cavities on the surface of MIP-TiO2/GR. Moreover, the photocatalytic activity of MIP-TiO2/GR toward the target molecules was stronger than that of NIP-TiO2/GR as a result of large adsorption capacity to target molecules and narrow band gap energy on MIP-TiO2/GR. Therefore, modifying the photocatalyst by the surface molecular imprinting is a promising method to improve the molecule recognition and photocatalytic efficiency of photocatalyst for target pollutant.

Abstract

Large-double-blade (LDB) impeller is a new type of agitator based on Fullzone (FZ) impeller and Maxblend (MB) impeller. To investigate its micromixing characteristics in rapid-reaction situations, we conducted experiments in a 380 mm diameter stirred tank. The effect of feeding time, feeding location, agitating speed and viscosity on micromixing characteristics of the novel large-double-blade impeller was investigated, adopting the iodide–iodate parallel competing reaction system. The micromixing characteristics of the novel large-double-blade impeller were also compared with that of double helicon ribbon (DHR) impeller and FZ impeller, which were widely used in process industries. The results indicate that segregation index decreases with increasing feeding time, and won׳t stabilize until the feeding time is greater than its critical value, when macromixing effects can be neglected. In addition, it is favorable for micromixing effects to feed in the impeller regions with high local energy dissipating rate. Segregation index is negatively correlated with stirring speed, whereas the rate of decline tends to be smaller at higher stirring speed, which means that the strengthening effect of improving rotation speed on micromixing efficiency decreases. Moreover, whether the systematic viscosity is high or not, the novel LDB impeller has the advantage of better micromixing effects over FZ and DHR impellers with the same power consumption per unit volume (P v ).

Abstract

Orthotropic steel decks are used in beams and cable-supported bridges. Fatigue cracks of the vertical rib–deck welded joint have been found in some of the bridges. In this paper, the structural hot spot stress (SHSS) approach is applied to evaluate the rib–deck fatigue. Refined solid models are built using a multi-sub-model technique. Stress around the weld tip is analyzed and effects of the weld profile, the weld toe radius and mesh size are discussed. The SHSS is analyzed using the surface stress extrapolation method, the stress linearization method and the 1 mm stress method. Fatigue strength of the joint based on the SHSS is proposed. Results of this study show that the refined multi-sub-model considering the weld detail can reflect the mechanical behavior of the rib–deck joint. Variation of the SHSS by the three methods decreases to less than 10% and a convergent SHSS is achieved using the refined models. The derived fatigue strength for the rib–deck joint using the SHSS of the refined models is close to FAT100. A more precise fatigue strength prediction can be achieved using the refined model while the coarse models result in a conservative design.
