Abstract

Single phase novel (Ti0.2W0.2Ta0.2Mo0.2V0.2)C0.8 high entropy carbide (HEC) compacts were successfully synthesized by reactive spark plasma sintering of ball milled metal-carbon elemental mixture at temperatures of 1400−1800 °C. X-ray diffraction and element distribution maps indicated single phase carbide formation with lattice parameter ranging from 4.307 A to 4.312 A with small amount of TiO2. X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mapping showed uniform distribution of the transition metals in the carbide phase. The microhardness, elastic modulus, fracture toughness, electrical resistivity and thermal expansion coefficient (25 °C–600 °C) of the compact sintered at 1800 °C were found to be 25.8 ± 2.8 GPa, 461 ± 36 GPa, 3.7 ± 0.4 MPa.m1/2, 7 × 10−4 Ω/m2 and 7 × 10-6 K−1 respectively.

Abstract

Sintering of pure B4C requires extremely high temperatures of more than 1800 °C, even with techniques such as spark plasma sintering (SPS). In this study, sintering of B4C was achieved at low temperature using reactive Ti–B mixture as a sintering additive. Ti and B powders (1:2 atom ratio) were milled for 8 h and added to B4C powder in proportions of 5, 10, and 20 wt% and milled for 4 h to achieve good dispersion. Dense B4C composite compacts were obtained using SPS at 1400 °C. A pore free microstructure consisting of B4C grains surrounded with fine grains of (Ti0·9W0.1)B2 and W2B5 was obtained due to WC contamination. The activation energy for sintering reduced from 234 to 155 kJ/mol with the increase in the amount of Ti–B mixture from 5 to 20 wt%. The B4C composite with 5 wt% Ti–B mixture had the maximum hardness of 3225 ± 218 H V.

Abstract

In a global scenario, the high strength lightweight dissimilar aluminium alloy 7075 and 2014 joining delivers a new opportunity to reduce weight in aerospace vehicles. The dissimilar aluminium alloy joining faces a technical challenge during fusion welding, due to the difference in thermo-mechanical properties. In this present work, the temperature distribution and grain size effects on dissimilar friction stir welded aerospace-grade aluminium alloy 7075 and 2014 was studied numerically and verified experimentally. The 3D integrated multiphysics model, coupled with a moving coordinate system, was simulated with the frictional effects of tool shoulder, pin to the workpiece and stick-slip mechanism. The dissimilar numerical model predicts the temperature and grain size changes across the weld zone. To verify the numerical model, two experiments T9 and T11 welded with a specimen size of 200 × 100 × 3 mm by the FSW-3T-CNC machine. The high-temperature computerized compact DAQ® 9212 and Lab VIEW© software interfaced with K-type thermocouple to measure the temperature. The measured temperature and grain size across the weld are in good agreement with simulated values. Optical microstructure and SEM micrographs illustrate T9 and T11 dissimilar joint with a clear onion pattern in the stir zone, which ensures the proper mixing of material with dynamically recrystallized fine equiaxed grains. The variation in hardness value observed from stir zone to base metal region and the average hardness in stir zone as 139 HV and 133 HV for T9 and T11 specimen, respectively.

Abstract

V-ATPases are membrane-embedded protein complexes that function as ATP hydrolysis-driven proton pumps. V-ATPases are the primary source of organellar acidification in all eukaryotes, making them essential for many fundamental cellular processes. Enzymatic activity can be modulated by regulated and reversible disassembly of the complex, and several subunits of mammalian V-ATPase have multiple isoforms that are differentially localized. Although the biochemical properties of the different isoforms are currently unknown, mutations in specific subunit isoforms have been associated with various diseases, making V-ATPases potential drug targets. V-ATPase structure and activity have been best characterized in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, where recent structures have revealed details about the dynamics of the enzyme, the proton translocation pathway, and conformational changes associated with regulated disassembly and autoinhibition.

Abstract

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), with two dimensional (2D-) or three dimensional (3D-) structures, have accessible open channels or nanopores, with uniform sizes ranging from angstroms to nanometers and have emerged as an excellent and promising platform for designing catalysts or catalyst carriers. Herein, a 2D-COF grafted with a 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium-based ionic liquid (AMIMBr@H2P-DHPh COF) on the channel walls was synthesized and utilized as a highly efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the chemical fixation of CO2 via a reaction with epoxides under solvent-free and co-catalyst-free conditions. The as-synthesized AMIMBr@H2P-DHPh COF shows excellent catalytic activity in promoting the cycloaddition reactions between epoxide and CO2; the excellent catalytic activity was maintained for up to five cycles. Advantages like high porosity, functional versatility, easy modification of COFs, and high catalytic activity of ionic liquids, have been realized in a single material.
