Abstract: In the muon ( g - 2 ) experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the spin precession frequency ω a is obtained from a standard χ 2 minimization fit applied to the time distribution of decay electrons. The unusually high accuracy ( ∼ 0.5 ppm ) of the experiment puts stringent requirements on the quality of the fit and the level of understanding of the statistical properties of the fitted parameters. We discuss the properties of the fits and their implications on the derived value for ω a , including estimates of the effect of an imperfect fit function, methods of including additional external information to reduce the error, the effects of splitting the data into many smaller subsets of data, applying different weighting methods to the data using energy information, and various tests of data suitability.

Abstract: Almost all existing tool condition monitoring methods require either the critical parameters of models which are experimentally found or the self-learning algorithms that are trained with existing data. Genetic Tool Monitor (GTM) is proposed to identify the problems by using an analytical model for micro-end-milling operations and genetic algorithm. The current version of the GTM is capable to monitor the micro-end-milling operations without any previous experience and is able to estimate symmetrical wear and local damages at the cutting edges of a tool. Genetic algorithms (GA) are found as a promising health monitoring tool if an expression exists and the necessary computational time is allowable in that particular application. GTM generates meaningful information about the ongoing operation and allows the establishment of rules based on the operators' experience.

Abstract: The current status of the updated results from the CMD-2 detector is presented. The cross sections of e + e − annihilation into hadrons were measured in the c.m. energy range from 0.37 to 1.39 GeV and are based on the total integrated luminosity of about 30 pb −1 . Results of refitting experimental data for the ρ, ω and mesons are reviewed.

Abstract: The cross section of the process e + e − → ωπ 0 → π 0 π 0 γ has been measured in the c.m. energy range 920–1380 MeV with the CMD-2 detector. Its energy dependence is well described by the interference of the ρ (770) and ρ (1450) mesons decaying to ωπ 0 . Upper limits for the cross sections of the direct processes e + e − → π 0 π 0 γ , ηπ 0 γ have been set.

Abstract: The Genetically Optimized Neural Network System (GONNS) is proposed as a human-like decision-making tool for the selection of optimum composite material and operating conditions. Multiple neural networks represent the characteristics of the system after a training process and genetic algorithms find the optimum operating conditions. The error of the GONNS was found to be less than 1% when the neural networks-represented analytical functions and genetic algorithms were used to select the optimal conditions. The GONNS is very promising for many complex optimization problems when analytical equations are not available to represent the characteristics of the system.

Abstract: An automated procedure is proposed to select the optimum material and processing conditions for composite materials. The complexity of the part is estimated from the STL files of the CAD/CAM programs by evaluating the angles between the triangles, which cover the surface. A correction algorithm identifies the holes and calculates the complexity without considering the triangles at their surfaces if they will be drilled later. Using multiple neural networks represented the most important characteristics of the composite material manufacturing for the user. For each considered material one genetic algorithm is assigned to select the optimal operating conditions. The optimal material is selected by comparing the good qualities of each material after the optimization. The proposed procedure is very attractive for optimization of complex systems when multiple approaches and their several characteristics are considered.

Abstract: The muon g-2 experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) has the goal of determining the muon anomalous magnetic moment, a μ (=( g- 2)/2) , to the very high precision of 0.35 parts per million and thus requires a storage ring magnet with great stability and homogeneity. A super-ferric storage ring has been constructed in which the field is to be known to 0.1 ppm . In addition, a new type of air core superconducting inflector has been developed and constructed, which successfully serves as the injection magnet. The injection magnet cancels the storage ring field, 1.5 T , seen by the entering muon beam very close to the storage ring aperture. At the same time, it gives negligible influence to the knowledge of the uniform main magnetic field in the muon storage region located at just 23 mm away from the beam channel. This was accomplished using a new double cosine theta design for the magnetic field which traps most of the return field, and then surrounding the magnet with a special superconducting sheet which traps the remaining return field. The magnet is operated using a warm-to-cold cryogenic cycle which avoids affecting the precision field of the storage ring. This article describes the design, research development, fabrication process, and final performance of this new type of superconducting magnet.

Abstract: A precise measurement of the anomalous g value, a(mu)(+) = (g - 2)/2, for the positive muon has been made at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The result a(mu)(+) = 11 659 202(14)(6) x 10(-10) (1.3 ppm) is in good agreement with previous measurements and has an error one third that of the combined previous data. The current theoretical value from the standard model is a(mu) (SM)= 11 659 159.6(6.7) x 10(-10) (0.57 ppm) and a(mu)(exp)-a(mu)(SM) = 42(16) x 10(-10) in which a(mu)(exp) is the world average experimental value.

Abstract: A Hall probe device has been built to measure the radial component of the magnetic field in the muon (g-2) storage ring at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The ultraprecise (g-2) magnet provides a dominantly vertical magnetic field of about 1:45 T. In order to limit the vertical shift of the muon orbit, the average radial field component should be no more than 5 � 10 � 5 of the vertical field. Our measurements with the Hall probe device achieved an accuracy of 1 � 10 � 5 , which is one of the most precise measurements with Hall probes. Abstract: Using 15.1 pb −1 of data collected by CMD-2 in the φ -meson energy range, the branching ratios of the following conversion decays have been measured: B ( φ → ηe + e − )=(1.14±0.10±0.06)×10 −4 , B ( η → e + e − γ )=(7.10±0.64±0.46)×10 −3 , B ( η → π + π − e + e − )=(3.7 +2.5 −1.8 ±0.3)×10 −4 . The upper limits for the following rare conversion decays have been obtained at the 90% confidence level: B ( φ → ημ + μ − ) −6 , B ( η → e + e − e + e − ) −5 .

For the ﬁrsttime an interference patternwas observed in the energy dependence of the cross section near theφ meson. Abstract: We have developed and tested a 4 channel, 500 MHz, 512 k sample, 8 bit waveform digitizer in a FASTCAMAC module. A novel feature is the implementation of a sparse scan during readout with a programmable differential trigger to reduce the data to a manageable level. The differential trigger allows reliable detection of pulses with low threshold in the presence of a variable baseline.

Abstract: Using 3.07 pb −1 of data collected in the energy range 0.60–0.97 GeV by CMD-2, about 150 events of the process e + e − → π + π − π + π − have been selected. The energy dependence of the cross section agrees with the assumption of the a 1 (1260) π intermediate state which is dominant above 1 GeV. For the first time π + π − π + π − events are observed at the ρ meson energy. Under the assumption that all these events come from the ρ meson decay, the value of the cross section at the ρ meson peak corresponds to the following decay width: Γ(ρ 0 →π + π − π + π − )=(2.8±1.4±0.5) keV or to the branching ratio B(ρ 0 →π + π − π + π − )=(1.8±0.9±0.3)·10 −5 .

Abstract: A study of the φ → π + π − π 0 decay mode has been performed using a data sample of about 2.0 million φ decays collected by the CMD-2 detector at VEPP-2M collider in Novosibirsk. The following parameters of the φ -meson have been measured: Br ( φ → π + π − π 0 )=0.145±0.009±0.003 and δ φ − ω =162±17°. The analysis of the Dalitz plot showed the dominance of the φ → ρπ intermediate mechanism, the limits for the ratio of the direct amplitude of φ →3 π to that of φ → ρπ are −0.16 a 1 φ → π + π − η and direct φ → ργγ have been found for the first time: Br ( φ → π + π − η ) −4 and Br ( φ → ργγ ) −4 at 90% C.L.

Abstract: We present a measurement of semi-inclusive spin asymmetries for positively and negatively charged hadrons from deep inelastic scattering of polarised muons on polarised protons and deuterons in the range $0.003$1 GeV$^2$. Compared to our previous publication on this subject, with the new data the statistical errors have been reduced by nearly a factor of two. From these asymmetries and our inclusive spin asymmetries we determine the polarised quark distributions of valence quarks and non-strange sea quarks at $Q^2$=10 GeV$^2$. The polarised $u$ valence quark distribution, $\Delta u_v(x)$, is positive and the polarisation increases with $x$. The polarised $d$ valence quark distribution, $\Delta d_v(x)$, is negative and the non-strange sea distribution, $\Delta \bar q(x)$, is consistent with zero over the measured range of $x$. We find for the first moments $\int_0^1 \Delta u_v(x) dx = 0.77 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.08$, $\int_0^1 \Delta d_v(x) dx = -0.52 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.09$ and $\int_0^1 \Delta \bar q(x) dx= 0.01 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.03$, where we assumed $\Delta \bar u(x) = \Delta \bar d(x)$. Abstract: The decay φ → η ′ γ has been observed by the CMD-2 detector at the e + e − collider VEPP-2M at Novosibirsk. Of 5.5 million produced φ 's, six events of the φ → η ′ γ decay were selected with the expected background less than one event. The corresponding branching ratio is B( φ → η ′ γ )=1.2 +0.7 −0.5 ·10 −4 . It is the first observation of this radiative decay.

Abstract: A search for φ radiative decays has been performed using a data sample of about 2.0 million φ decays collected by the CMD-2 detector at VEPP-2M collider in Novosibirsk. From the selected e + e − → π + π − γ events the following results were obtained: B( φ → f 0 (980) γ ) −4 for destructive and B( φ → f 0 (980) γ ) −4 for constructive interference with the Bremsstrahlung process respectively, B( φ → γ → π + π − γ ) −5 for E γ >20 MeV, B( φ → ργ ) −4 . From the selected e + e − → μ + μ − γ events B( φ → μ + μ − γ )=(2.3±1.0)×10 −5 has been obtained for E γ >20 MeV. The upper limit on the P,CP-violating decay η → π + π − has also been placed: B( η → π + π − ) −4 . All upper limits are at 90% C.L.

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the virtual photon proton asymmetry $A_1^{\rm p}$ from deep inelastic scattering of polarized muons on polarized protons in the kinematic range $0.0008 < x < 0.7$ and $0.2 < Q^{2} < 100$ GeV$^{2}$. With this, the statistical uncertainty of our measurement has improved by a factor of $2$ compared to our previous measurements. The spin-dependent structure function $g_{1}^{\rm p}$ is determined for the data with $Q^{2} > 1$ GeV$^{2}$. A perturbative QCD evolution in next-to-leading order is used to determine $g_1^{\rm p}(x)$ at a constant $Q^2$. At $Q^{2} = 10$ GeV$^{2}$ we find, in the measured range, $\int_{0.003}^{0.7} g_{1}^{\rm p}(x){\rm d}x = 0.139 \pm 0.006~({\rm stat})\pm 0.008~({\rm syst)} \pm 0.006~({\rm evol})$. The value of the first moment $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm p} = \int_{0}^{1} g_{1}^{\rm p}(x){\rm d}x$ of $g_{1}^{\rm p}$ depends on the approach used to describe the behaviour of $g_{1}^{\rm p}$ at low $x$. We find that the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule is violated. With our published result for $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm d}$ we confirm the Bjorken sum rule with an accuracy of $\approx 15\%$ at the one standard deviation level.

Abstract: We have developed a NMR standard probe using a spherical pure water sample of 1 cm diameter to determine the absolute magnetic field B in terms of the free-proton NMR frequency fp with an accuracy of 3.4 × 10−8. Our standard probe can be used conveniently to calibrate other probes in the field range from 1.45 to 1.7 T and can readily be employed over a much wider field range. The probe design and the tests carried out to verify its precision and accuracy are presented.

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the spin-dependent structure function $g_{1}^{\rm d}$ of the deuteron from deep inelastic scattering of 190 GeV polarized muons on polarized deuterons. The results are combined with our previous measurements of $g_{1}^{\rm d}$. A perturbative QCD evolution in next-to-leading order is used to compute $g_{1}^{\rm d}(x)$ at a constant $Q^{2}$. At $Q^{2} = 10$ GeV$^{2}$, we obtain a first moment $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm d} = \int_{0}^{1} g_{1}^{\rm d}{\rm d}x = 0.041 \pm 0.008$, a flavour-singlet axial charge of the nucleon $a_{0} = 0.30 \pm 0.08$, and an axial charge of the strange quark $a_{s} = -0.09 \pm 0.03$. Using our earlier determination of $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm p}$, we obtain $\Gamma_1^{\rm p} - \Gamma_1^{\rm n} = 0.183 \pm 0.035$ at $Q^2 = 10\,\mbox{GeV}^2$. This result is in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule which predicts $\Gamma_1^{\rm p} - \Gamma_1^{\rm n} = 0.186 \pm 0.002$ at the same $Q^2$.

Abstract: Results of the measurement of the φ meson parameters with the general purpose detector CMD-2 at the upgraded e + e − collider VEPP-2M at Novosibirsk are presented. This is the first measurement of the four major φ decay modes in a single e + e − experiment. The results based on about 55,600 identified hadronic events are consistent with previous measurements, and have precision comparable to the current world average.

Abstract: Doppler-free two-photon laser spectroscopy has been employed to measure the 1 2 S 1 2 −2 2 S 1 2 transition in the muonium atom (μ+e−). A value of 2 455 529 002(33) (46) MHz has been obtained, which agrees with QED calculations within two standard deviations. The Lamb shift contributions are tested to the level 8×10−3. The corresponding measurements in hydrogen and deuterium using the same apparatus and laser system provide a test of the applied systematic corrections and have verified the systematic error of 46 MHz quoted. The mass of the positive muon has been derived from the isotope shift in this transition and yields a value of 105.65880(29)(43) MeV c 2 .

The beam polarisation is determined from the energy spectrum of positrons from the decay μ+ → e+ νcνμ. A polarisation of - 0.82 is measured with a relative systematic accuracy of 3%.

Abstract: A chopped positive muon beam with high intensity, low momentum, and high purity has been developed at LAMPF using a high voltage chopper system. The rise and fall times of the chopped muon beam are approximately 100 ns, the repetition rate extends up to 100 kHz and the extinction ratio for muons is 0.3%. The beam chopper system is described and the test results are presented. This chopped high intensity μ + beam is to be used to achieve resonance line-narrowing in a precision microwave spectroscopy experiment on muonium.

Abstract: Muonium atoms have been observed emerging into vacuum from silica aerogel surfaces with a thermal velocity distribution corresponding to a temperature of 298(10) K after stopping positive muons from a subsurface muon beam. Yields up to 2.3(3)% could be achieved for aerogel samples of 160 mg/cm3 density. They represent an interesting alternative to the SiO2 powders previously used for muonium production in vacuum.

Abstract: We report the results of an experiment measuring the the parity-violating electroweak asymmetry in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from 12 C nuclei. We obtain A exp = 0.60 ± 0.14 ± 0.02 ppm. The first error is statistical and the second is systematic. Using our measured beam polarization of 0.37 ± 0.02, we compute the isoscalar vector hadronic coupling constant γ to be 0.136 ± 0.032 ± 0.009. This agrees with the tree level Standard Model prediction of γ = 0.155 .

Abstract: The energies and lineshapes of five circular transitions (n = 15 → n = 14 through n = 11 → = 10) of the Σ−Pb atom were measured wit of the transitions 15 → 14 through 12 → 11 were determined; these energies were compared with energies calculated from quantum electrodynamics, and the mass of Σ− was adjusted to achieve a best fit. The result was mΣ− = 1197.24 ±0.15 MeV. The lineshape of the 12→11 transition, which is broadened by the fine structure, has been analyzed to extract the magnetic moment of Σ−. The result was μΣ− = −1.40−0.28+0.41or 0.651−0.40+0.28 nuclear magnetons. Comparisons with SU (3) predictions are made.

Abstract: A low momentum positive muon beam has been developed at LAMPF, utilizing muons which originate from pion decays at rest near the surface of the pion production target and are transported by the LAMPF stopped muon channel. The muon beam has a total flux of 2.5 × 104μ+ per s per μA of a proton beam (8 × 106μ+ s−1 for the present operating current at LAMPF of 300 μA), an extremely narrow range spread of 50 mg/cm2 in CH2, and a positron contamination (e+/gm+) of 60%.

Abstract: We measured the effect of calcium carbonate and hydroxyapatite on whole-body retention of zinc-65 in 11 and iron-59 in 13 healthy, postmenopausal women. In a single-blind, controlled, crossover study, each subject, on three occasions, ingested a standard test meal supplemented with iron-59 or zinc-65 and capsules containing placebo or 500 mg elemental calcium as calcium carbonate or hydroxyapatite. Whole-body countings were performed prior to, 30 min after, and 2 wk after each meal. Mean (SEM) zinc retention was 18.1 +/- 1.0% with placebo (control) and did not vary significantly with calcium carbonate (110.0 +/- 8.6% of control) or hydroxyapatite (106.0 +/- 7.9% of control). Iron retention, 6.3 +/- 2.0% with placebo, was significantly reduced with both calcium carbonate (43.3 +/- 8.8% of control, p = 0.002) and hydroxyapatite (45.9 +/- 10.0% of control, p = 0.003). Iron absorption may be significantly reduced when calcium supplements are taken with meals.

Abstract: A very low momentum, high purity positive muon beam has been developed at LAMPF, utilizing muons which originate from pion decays at rest in the target for the primary proton beam and are transported by the LAMPF stopped muon channel. The channel is tuned to transport muons with momenta as low as 3 MeV/c and hence selects muons originating some distance below the target surface (subsurface muons). A static E × B separator largely eliminates the e+ component in the beam.

Abstract: A stopping muon beam has been constructed at LAMPF. This channel operates in the momentum range of 25–250MeV/c. Peak stopping rates are 1.5 × 10 4 μ − /( μ A s g/cm 2 ) and 7 × 10 4 μ + /( μ A s g/cm 2 ). Contamination levels are exceptionally low: less than 0.5% for electrons and less than 0.1% for pions. A separated “surface” beam has been developed with stopping densities as high as 3 × 10 6 μ + /( μ A s g/cm 2 ). Details are given of design calculations, construction and measurements on the completed beam line.

Abstract: A measurement of the 23P0−23P2 fine structure interval in the helium has beeen made using the optical microwave atomic beam magnetic resonance technique. The result is 31.908 040 (20) GHz (0.6ppm), which establishes an internal consistency in measurements of the helium fine structure and verifies the theory to order α4Ry. When the theory is used together wit our experimental result we obtain a value for the fine structure constant α by α-1=137.03613(11) (0.8 ppm).

Abstract: A polarized electron source based upon photoionization of a state-selected 6 Li atomic beam has been developed as an injection gun for the Standford two-mile electron linear accelerator. The source (PEGGY) produces a pulsed beam of electrons with a maximum intensity of 2.6×10 9 electrons per pulse, a polarization of 0.85, a pulse length of 1.6 μs, and a repitition rate of 180 pulses/s. Since its installation at SLAC in July 1974, PEGGY has been used in several energy electron-nucleon scattering experiments.

Abstract: We report the measurement of g J ( 4 He,2 3 S 1 ) g J ( 85 Rb ,5 2 S 1 2 ) by the atomic beam magnetic reson ance method using separated oscillating fields, and hence the determination g J ( 4 He,2 3 S 1 ) g J (H,1 2 S 1 2 ) − 1− (23.19±0.07) × 10 −6 , which agrees with theory and with other less precise recent measurements.
