Abstract

Distinguishing investors into speculators and operators, and classifying the former group into momentum and contrarian investors, we develop a heterogeneous agent model (HAM) to examine the dynamics of price of second-hand dry bulk ships. The results suggest that momentum strategies based on short-term measures of earnings perform significantly better than the contrarian or passive (buy-and-hold) strategies. The HAM seems to capture the dynamics of vessel prices and the investors’ behavior in the market for ships very well. Finally, an increase in participation of momentum investors tends to increase price volatility, whereas higher demand from contrarian investors seems to lower price variability.

Abstract

Long-term forecasts in shipping have continued to draw interest among researchers and industry all along the post-war period; they have been often wide-off the mark also. It was through the “unknown-unknowns”, a concept put forward during the Iraq war, that a very different picture of the maritime world was formed very much away from a linear progression of post-WWII trends. The authors discuss the limitations of long-term forecasts related to shipping in the context of the extent and sources of uncertainty which affect the demand and supply environment of the industry. Proposing a classification of risk and of sources of uncertainty in shipping by nature and time-horizon, the authors proceed to a historical benchmarking back to – and including – 1989, just as the division of most of the world in two opposing politico-economic blocks ended. Next, the analysis points to the range of challenges ahead over an equivalent time-span leading to the end of the 2030’s. The authors conclude emphasising the need to focus on the nature of consequences to increase the strength of shipping firms against adverse outcomes of once safely projected trends or one-off unforeseeable events such as “Black Swan” ones, as termed by Taleb.

Abstract

The paper explores mid and long-term scenarios of energy trends and relative energy price reversals and their impact on the configuration and potential volume developments of fossil fuel seaborne trades. International fora have called for removing fossil fuels from the place of major primary energy sources by the end of this century. This, along with the development of fracking projects for oil and gas, located closer to consumers than most alternative fossil fuel sources, and geopolitical considerations, adds to a cluster of potential negative influences on future traded volumes of fossil fuels. While demographics and GDP growth still favour the growth of energy consumption, the rise of shale oil and gas and of renewables may challenge the direction of the trend, due also to the declared will of the international community to limit energy dependence on geopolitically sensitive areas. Yet, recent price upheavals have underlined that any positive or negative developments are unlikely to evolve in a linear way. Short-term reversals are secondary, however, in relation to long-term trends. The authors focus on the potential impact on the demand for transport of energy of changes in relative energy export prices and in the priorities of main importers.

Abstract

Aims Low rates of adjuvant chemotherapy use are frequently reported in older women with early breast cancer. One of the reasons for this may be the risk of febrile neutropaenia or the perception that older patients will probably not complete the chemotherapy course prescribed. There are no data regarding these adverse outcomes in routine clinical practice. Patients and methods We identified 128 patients aged 70 years or over who received neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy for early breast cancer in seven UK cancer centres between 2006 and 2012. Data were collected regarding standard clinical and pathological variables and treatment toxicity and outcomes. Results Twenty-four patients (19%) had an episode of febrile neutropaenia. Overall, 27 patients (21%) did not complete their planned therapy. Chemotherapy discontinuation was more common in those patients with an episode of febrile neutropaenia (46% versus 16%, P = 0.004). Thirty patients (23%) were admitted with chemotherapy-related complications. There were no treatment-related deaths. Conclusions The rates of febrile neutropaenia and treatment discontinuation are high in women aged 70 years or over receiving adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer. Close attention should be paid to the choice or regimen and the use of supportive therapies in this patient population.

Abstract

Highlights • Intratumour heterogeneity (ITH) has been demonstrated in various tumour types. • Distinct clonal subpopulations can exist within different regions of a tumour. • ITH has evident implications for cancer diagnosis and treatment. • There is increasing evidence for the association between ITH and drug resistance. • ITH may allow the effective use of immunotherapeutics against tumour neo-antigens., Recent advances in sequencing technologies have revealed extensive intratumour heterogeneity (ITH) both within individual tumours and between primary and metastatic tumours for different cancer types. Such genetic diversity may have clinical implications for both cancer diagnosis and treatment with increasing evidence linking ITH and therapeutic resistance. Nonetheless, whilst limiting the activity of targeted agents, tumour genetic heterogeneity may provide a new therapeutic opportunity through generation of neo-antigens that could be recognised and targeted by the patient's own immune system in response to immune-modulatory therapies. Longitudinal genomic studies assessing tumour clonal architecture and its correlation with the underlying immune response to cancer in each particular patient are needed to follow tumour evolutionary dynamics over time and through therapy, in order to further understand the mechanisms behind drug resistance and to inform the development of new combinatorial therapeutic strategies.

This paper revisits the hypothesis of a quality segmented charter market using dry bulk-Panamax time–charter rates from the shipping boom period of 2003–2007. Through generalized additive models (GAMs) the authors assess whether increasing awareness and regulation over time has brought about a change in charterers’ perceptions. The results suggest that freight differentiation has become visible in booming markets with high freight rates. Controlling for contract specific effects such as place of delivery, charter length and number of days forward to delivery, as well as for vessel size and consumption, the paper quantifies quality related differences in physical dry bulk charter rates.

Abstract

Aplastic anemia (AA) is a syndrome of hematopoietic failure involving increased apoptosis of stem cells. In order to investigate the molecular mechanisms participated in the process of marrow failure, we created an in vitro model of hematopoietic cell suppression, by continuous addition of TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma in an vitro long-term bone marrow culture system. An up-regulation of Fas expression was observed in CD34+ cells in cytokine treated cultures, compared to controls. This was accompanied by significant TRAIL and decreased caspase 3 mRNA expression, whereas the expression of Bcl-2 family members was low (Bcl-xl) or absent (Bcl-2, Bax). The expression of these apoptotic genes was also investigated in aplastic anemia patients. Apart from Fas mRNA expression in total marrow and/or CD34+ cells, TRAIL mRNA expression was found only in CD34+ cells in active disease while in total marrow cell compartment this remains a constant finding even in patients in remission. The above data are in agreement with previous studies proposing a major role for the extrinsic apoptosis pathway in the pathogenesis of aplastic anemia and additionally introduce TRAIL as a probable important molecule in the process.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to assess the clinical and laboratory characteristics, the course, and the factors influencing the hospital mortality and relapse rate of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) in cirrhotic patients admitted in a single University Hospital in Greece. METHODS: The study comprises the evaluation of 81 cirrhotic patients who developed SBP during a 30-month period. RESULTS: The occurrence of SBP was independent of the etiology of liver disease and was symptomatic in 66/81 patients (82%). Encephalopathy, as presenting symptom, occurred mainly in Child C patients. Ascitic fluid culture was positive in 20 patients (25%); E. coli (60%) and Enterococcus faecalis (14%) were the most common bacteria isolated. Empirical treatment was effective in 94% of patients. Abstract

Following important changes in the safety regulation of tankers, the dry bulk sector is coming under the spotlight in a safety and quality perspective. Nominal freight differentiation between ‘quality’ and ‘other’ tonnage has been observed occasionally and much lip service has been paid to promoting the need for younger and safer ships. Whether or not these signals actually manifest in a market initiative for the enhancement of the standards of the world bulk carrier fleet is debatable. This paper investigates the possible existence of a two-tier spot freight market for medium and large bulk carriers of differing age. Known voyage fixtures are investigated for four representative years since the end of the 1980s, during which contrasting freight market conditions prevailed. In all but very few cases, there was no statistically significant difference between rates paid to older and younger tonnage. In those few cases where such differences were statistically significant, they never exceeded 10%.

Abstract

The recovery of the markets in the late 1980s proved to be insufficient in restoring the traditional western registries to anywhere near their levels before the long period of crisis triggered off in 1973. The recent downturn in the dry bulk sector has triggered again the discussion on the role of manning costs and the terms of registration of ships. Yet, as demonstrated by the different impact of the crisis of the 1970s and the 1980s on the various major fleets, the resilience of shipping companies is a much more complex issue. This article attempts to assess to what extent the prerequisites for being competitive in shipping exceed the simple — and simplistic — notion of low manning costs; reviewing the last developments in fleet registration, with a special focus on the Greek flag, It highlights further the different context in which business and policy decisions have to be taken nowadays by traditional maritime nations.

Abstract

The influx of shipping receipts from the world's leading fleet has been critical for the development of the Greek economy. Following the fateful September of 2008, the range and speed of the shift in direction of the freight rates, combined with the general economic and credit climate, have had a significant impact on Greek receipts from shipping. The paper investigates both the long and short term responses of shipping flows in the Greek balance of payments on the basis of monthly data. It also evaluates the role of the change in Greek ship-owners’ investment strategies from 2006 onwards. The paper presents estimations of the impact of freight market determinants on the shipping flows through a Greek shipping freight rate index, the loans outstanding and the second-hand vessel’s price index. The findings provide evidence in favour of a change in the investment behaviour of the Greek shipping companies after 2006. Inflows and outflows tend to be dictated partly by the cash-flow position of the companies involved in the S&P market, as indicated by the positive relationship with freight rates.
