Abstract

PURPOSE: To develop a consensus nomenclature for reporting OCT angiography (OCTA) findings in retinal vascular disease (e.g., diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion) by international experts. DESIGN: Delphi-based survey. SUBJECTS, PARTICIPANTS, AND/OR CONTROLS: Twenty-five retinal vascular disease and OCTA imaging experts. METHODS, INTERVENTION, OR TESTING: A Delphi method of consensus development was used, comprising 2 rounds of online questionnaires, followed by a face-to-face meeting conducted virtually. Twenty-five experts in retinal vascular disease and retinal OCTA imaging were selected to constitute the OCTA Nomenclature in Delphi Study Group for retinal vascular disease. The 4 main areas of consensus were: definition of the parameters of "wide-field (WF)" OCTA, measurement of decreased vascular flow on conventional and WF-OCTA, nomenclature of OCTA findings, and OCTA in retinal vascular disease management and staging. The study end point was defined by the degree of consensus for each question: "strong consensus" was defined as ≥85% agreement, "consensus" as 80% to 84%, and "near consensus" as 70% to 79%. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Consensus and near consensus on OCTA nomenclature in retinal vascular disease. RESULTS: A consensus was reached that a meaningful change in percentage of flow on WF-OCTA imaging should be an increase or decrease ≥30% of the absolute imaged area of flow signal and that a "large area" of WF-OCTA reduced flow signal should also be defined as ≥30% of the absolute imaged area. The presence of new vessels and intraretinal microvascular abnormalities, the foveal avascular zone parameters, the presence and amount of "no-flow areas," and the assessment of vessel density in various retinal layers should be added for the staging and classification of diabetic retinopathy. Abstract

© 2018 Nanostructured sodium amide encapsulated in a porous silica gel matrix (“NaNH2-SG”) was investigated for CO2capture and storage by in-situ gravimetric gas sorption. Exposure of NaNH2-SG to CO2at 25 °C and 1 bar pressure resulted in ~3.6 wt% CO2uptake over eight sorption/desorption cycles. Over 90% of the CO2uptake was non-reversible due to reaction between CO2and NaNH2to form sodium carbamate, as confirmed by13C and23Na solid-state NMR. Electronic structure calculations suggest a two-stage reaction process involving initial formation and subsequent rearrangement of the carbamate product. This research confirms the feasibility of sequential reactions of nanoparticles in a porous substrate (Na-SG to NaNH2-SG to Na-carbamate-SG), and of CO2capture by NaNH2-SG nanoparticles stabilised by encapsulation within the porous substrate. This encapsulation method could allow further hygroscopic or reactive starting reagents or compounds to be explored for CO2capture and long-term storage.

© 2018 Elsevier B.V. The application of polymer membranes in wastewater treatment and desalination is widespread. Nevertheless, the longstanding biofouling issue on membrane surface has garnered enormous attention within the scientific and industrial fields. Motivated by the recent development of nanocomposite membranes, the integration of biocidal nanomaterials with polymeric membranes has emerging as a promising strategy to mitigate biofouling. This review is aiming to encompass current nanomaterials and fabrication techniques, with highlights on the recent significant breakthroughs, in the field of antimicrobial nanocomposite membranes and imparts a comprehensive understanding of the strategic evolution in the design and construction approaches of antibacterial membranes. This review includes an exhaustive introduction of the antibacterial materials for membrane functionalization, including metal and carbon-based nanoparticles, organic antibacterial agents and bio-enzymes, together with their antibacterial mechanisms. Furthermore, we highlight the limitations in the current lab-based membrane antibacterial assay techniques, and discuss the challenges and prospective to link the antibacterial properties with the anti-biofouling behavior in practical applications.

Abstract

It has been recently reported that potassium channel increases activities in CA1 pyramidal neurons of rat hippocampus following transient forebrain ischemia. To understand the role of the enhanced potassium current in the pathogenesis of neuronal damage after ischemia, we examined the effects of tetraethylammonium (TEA) and 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) on the neuronal injury of CA1 region induced by 15 min forebrain ischemia using a four-vessel occlusion model. Adult rats received intracerebroventricular administration of either TEA or 4-AP after ischemia or TEA before ischemia and once each day for 7 days. In the postischemic TEA treated-rats, the neuronal injury in hippocampal CA1 region was significantly less than that of the controls. In contrast, neither preischemic infusion of TEA nor postischemic treatment of 4-AP had any neuroprotective effects. The present study demonstrates that postischemic application of TEA protects hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons against ischemic insult, suggesting that potassium channels may play important roles in the pathogenesis of CA1 neuronal death after transient forebrain ischemia.

Abstract

Redox regulation of BKCa channels was studied in CA1 pyramidal neurons of adult rat hippocampus by using inside-out configuration of patch clamp. Intracellular application of oxidizing agent 5,5′-dithio-bis(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB) markedly increased activity of BKCa channels and this stimulating action persisted even after washout. In contrast, the reducing agent dithiothreitol (DTT) had no apparent effects on channel activity but could reverse the pre-exposure of DTNB-induced enhancement. The increase in channel activity produced by DTNB was due to shortened closed time as well as prolonged open time. The effects exerted by another redox couple glutathione disulphide and its reducing form were similar as DTNB and DTT. The present results indicate that BKCa channels in CA1 pyramidal neurons can be modulated by intracellular redox potential, and that augmentation of BKCa channels by oxidative stress might contribute to the postischemic electrophysiological alterations of CA1 pyramidal neurons.

43. Effective evaporation of CF4plasma modified PVDF membranes in direct contact membrane distillation

PVDF membranes, after surface modification by CF4plasma, have demonstrated surperhydrophobic surface characteristics and up to 30% flux enhancement in direct contact membrane distillation (MD). The heat transport in the MD process was modeled to assess the membrane distillation coefficients (Bm). The experimentally determined Bmshowed up to 50% deviation from the modeled values for CF4modified PVDF membranes. An effective evaporation factor, as a function of surface porosity and surface water contact angle, was proposed to correlate surface wettability contribution to the MD flux. This factor was fitted by comparing the experimentally determined flux with modeled one. It was found that the factor, which is positively related to surface water contact angle and surface porosity, varied with the membrane wettability and can rationally explain the deviation between observed and theoretical fluxes. In addition, CF4plasma modification could increase the membrane's evaporation efficiency from 54.3% for the virgin membrane up to 63.4% for surface modified membranes because of the increase of the effective evaporation area factor. The introduction of the factor provides a means to evaluate the membrane surface hydrophobicity to the MD flux and necessitate the development of super even ultra-hydrophobic membranes.

44. Fabrication of a novel 'loose' nanofiltration membrane by facile blending with Chitosan-Montmorillonite nanosheets for dyes purification

The novel hybrid material, clay/polymer nanocomposite has represented a desired alternative for designing the mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) due to their excellent overall performance, such as good hydrophilic nature, high mechanical strength, enhanced thermal stability, etc. In this study, we report a feasible method to fabricate a novel "loose" nanofiltration membrane by blending with Chitosan-Montmorillonite (CS-MMT) nanosheets via phase inversion method. The results of FT-IR, XRD and TEM showed that CS-MMT nanosheets were successfully fabricated. It was found that the hydrophilicity and water flux of hybrid membranes greatly improved after adding CS-MMT nanosheets. Meanwhile, the hybrid membranes exhibited a preferable antifouling property, that is, high flux recovery ratio (ca. 92%) and low total flux decline ratio (ca. 0.26) when CS-MMT content was only 1.0. wt.%. Additionally, CS-MMT nanosheets provided an enhanced mechanical property, thus giving rise to significant promotion in both tensile strength and elongation at break of the hybrid membranes. More importantly, the "loose" nanofiltration membrane showed higher rejection for Reactive Black 5 and Reactive Red 49, and lower rejection for bivalent salts unlike the conventional nanofiltration membranes. Therefore, the "loose" nanofiltration membrane could be used for dyes purification with low pressure and high efficiency.
