Abstract

Coated polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PcBN) tools are increasingly used for industrial applications with stringent requirements. However, information on the mechanical integrity of these systems is quite limited. Within this context, the adhesion strength of two TiN/TiAlN-coated and microstructurally different PcBN substrates – high- and low-cBN content grades with metallic and ceramic binders, respectively – is investigated by means of Rockwell C indentation testing. In doing so, special attention is paid to substrate microstructure effects on emergence and evolution of damage as applied load is increased. For both coated systems, it is found that damage scenario evolves from early adhesive delamination within the contact area towards radial cracking and spalling outside the residual imprint. However, critical loads for transition between damage stages are discerned to depend on microstructural assemblage of the substrate. Higher resistance to radial cracking and delamination is exhibited by the high cBN-content grade, in agreement with its higher hardness and toughness. Failure micromechanisms associated with cracking and spalling are similar for both coated-PcBN systems. Very interesting, delamination outside the residual imprint is determined to be of cohesive nature within the substrate, an experimental fact resulting from interaction among indentation-induced radial, cone-like and lateral fissures in PcBN.

Abstract

Introduction /Objectives: The objectives were to conduct a survey of cardiologists on their recent experiences with cats that have dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), and to retrospectively review individual cases of feline DCM. Animals, Materials and Methods Part One: A survey was distributed to cardiologists with questions regarding caseload and clinical management of cats with DCM diagnosed over the past two years. Part Two: Cardiologists completing the survey were invited to submit data from cats recently diagnosed with DCM. Data on signalment, clinical signs, diet, echocardiographic measurements, and outcome were recorded. Results Part One: From 52 completed surveys, many cardiologists responded that measuring and supplementing taurine and recommending a diet change in cats with DCM are common practices. Few (15%) cardiologists reported an increase in number of feline DCM cases over the past two years, although some had cases that improved even if taurine deficiency was not present. Part Two: Twenty of 37 (54%) cats ate low pea/lentil (low PL) diets and 14/37 (38%) ate high pea/lentil (high PL) diets at the time of diagnosis; three had incomplete diet information. Two of 13 cats (15%) in which taurine was measured had levels below the reference range. After adjusting for other variables, cats eating high PL diets that changed diets post-diagnosis had a significantly longer survival time compared to cats eating high PL diets that did not change diets post-diagnosis (P=0.025). Conclusions Additional research is warranted to determine whether there could be a possible association between diet and DCM in cats.

3. Validation d’un protocole de téléexpertise d’ophtalmologie en EHPAD

Abstract

Resume Introduction Les residents en EHPAD sont une population fragile dont l’acces aux soins est limite. Ces dernieres annees, la telemedecine s’est developpee dans plusieurs specialites, dont l’ophtalmologie. L’objectif principal de notre etude est la validation d’un protocole de teleexpertise d’ophtalmologie en EHPAD. Materiel et methodes Il s’agit d’une etude retrospective, multicentrique et descriptive incluant 4 EHPAD autour de l’agglomeration de Rennes. Un orthoptiste examinait les residents une demi-journee par semaine. L’examen se faisait directement dans la chambre du patient, au lit ou au fauteuil, avec du materiel portable. Les examens sont interpretes a distance et en differe par un ophtalmologiste du service dans un delai de 7 jours. Une prise en charge adaptee medicale ou chirurgicale est alors proposee au patient selon le diagnostic. Resultats Nous avons inclus 113 residents. Un examen complet et interpretable a ete realise dans 84,1 % des cas. Une ou plusieurs pathologies ophtalmologiques ont ete diagnostiquees chez 57,5 % des residents. Parmi les residents ayant effectue une consultation au CHU, 65 % d’entre eux ont eu un acte chirurgical ou un laser programme. L’acuite visuelle a ete significativement amelioree apres la teleexpertise. Discussion Le taux de reussite d’un examen complet et interpretable nous permet, a ce jour, de valider notre procedure d’examen en EHPAD. En plus d’apporter un grand nombre d’informations initialement inconnues au personnel medical et paramedical de la structure, la teleexpertise d’ophtalmologie permet une amelioration significative de l’acuite visuelle. Conclusion Ce projet a permis de valider la faisabilite d’une teleexpertise d’ophtalmologie dans les EHPAD. Cette activite semble egalement pouvoir s’ouvrir a d’autres centres de soins (centres penitenciers, etablissement de sante mentale…).

Abstract

Most gene therapy lentiviral vector (LV) production platforms employ HEK293T cells expressing the oncogenic SV40 large T-antigen (TAg) that is thought to promote plasmid-mediated gene expression. Studies on other viral oncogenes suggest that TAg may also inhibit the intracellular autonomous innate immune system that triggers defensive antiviral responses upon detection of viral components by cytosolic sensors. Here we show that an innate response can be generated after HIV-1-derived LV transfection in HEK293T cells, particularly by the transgene, yet, remarkably, this had no effect on LV titer. Further, overexpression of DNA sensing pathway components led to expression of inflammatory cytokine and interferon (IFN) stimulated genes but did not result in detectable IFN or CXCL10 and had no impact on LV titer. Exogenous IFN-β also did not affect LV production or transduction efficiency in primary T cells. Additionally, manipulation of TAg did not affect innate antiviral responses, but stable expression of TAg boosted vector production in HEK293 cells. Our findings demonstrate a measure of innate immune competence in HEK293T cells but, crucially, show that activation of inflammatory signaling is uncoupled from cytokine secretion in these cells. This provides new mechanistic insight into the unique suitability of HEK293T cells for LV manufacture.

Abstract

Prevalence of Parkinson's Disease (PD) in the Philippines has been estimated to be 1 % based on a 2007 nationwide survey conducted by the Philippine Neurological Association, but without case ascertainment. Since there is still paucity of data, we aim to determine the prevalence of PD in a rural community and the possible predisposing factors on the development of the disease.This is a two-phase descriptive study which investigated the prevalence of PD and associated risk factors in a randomly selected rural community in Candelaria, Quezon Province. A validated screening questionnaire was utilized, and case ascertainment was done in eligible respondents.A total of 365 respondents aged ≥ 20 years were randomly surveyed from 2016 to 2017. Two cases of PD aged ≥ 60 years were reported. Thus, the prevalence of PD in the community was 0.55 %. Age-specific prevalence of PD among individuals ≥ 60 years was 4.35 %.Insecticide use was infrequent in the community and was recorded in one PD patient. Protective factors like smoking and drinking tea were not observed in both cases whereas coffee intake was reported in one PD patient.This community-based epidemiologic study on PD is consistent with a nationwide study. The study portrayed certain demographic and environmental features inherent in a community, which are potential confounding variables in PD development. Future larger population studies be recommended to establish PD in the advancing age and to further support the link of various factors with PD.

Abstract

There has been a growing interest on the study of the human-ecosystems sustainability from an integrated point of view. The recognition of sustainability as a complex long-term problem has led to the development of tools that address it from a multidisciplinary perspective. Several mathematical models have been developed to support the understanding of the interactions between human activities and natural resources, and the effect of economic and social issues on the sustainability of such ecosystems. However, only a few of them have considered these aspects holistically; even more, critical social aspects such as uneven distribution of goods and services have not been addressed. Developed countries have a larger pool of resources when facing environmental and social issues than developing countries, along with larger resilience to external threats, being able to rely on scientific and technological advances against poverty and inequity. Therefore, these developed societies are socially fairer and more capable to become sustainable. This work presents an integrated ecological-economical-social model which includes a crucial social aspect in the sustainability study such is inequity, having two sectors of a population with different economic distribution values; these two populations interact directly with each other representing a stratified society as an attempt to conceptually describe a real-world human ecosystem where goods and natural resources are not evenly distributed. Also, the system is under the influence of uncertain external instabilities due to the inclusion of real data series, captured in the model by stochastic processes incorporated in demographic variables. Four typical kinds of societies with different levels of development and inequity were analyzed. Over the sixty percent of the times simulations led to a system collapse, being the probability of collapse directly related to the inequity. Results suggest that societies with unevenly distributed economies are less sustainable than more equalitarian societies, proving that economic equality is an important factor to consider in sustainability studies. Additionally, a typical pattern for per capita wages was found in those cases where the system collapsed, similar from a macroeconomic behavior in real world economies under economic crisis.

Abstract

There is a great concern about the current growing and indiscriminate human activity over the environment that supports us. Many researchers and strategists have predicted human and natural disasters based on assumptions linked to economic, social and environmental trends. Most of these events have either not happened, the impact was far less than projected or they may have been delayed several years. Such situations might have not been due to erroneous assumptions or calculations, but rather to the ability of ecosystems to recover and adapt following a stressful situation or a disruptive event, so called resilience. The mechanisms of how resilience works generally imply intrinsic complex feedback loops of the systems; such loops absorb the external impacts and distribute them through the different elements that conform the system. This work analyzes a social feedback loop in the dynamics of a human-ecosystem and its consequences in the search for sustainable governmental targets. The loop is derived from the uncertainties in the demographic parameters and is incorporated into a mass-based compartmental model of a human ecosystem with social inequity. The methodology has been applied to three different types of societies with different development levels, using five different governmental targets. As expected, it is clear that feedback loops affect the behavior of the system. Results show that the same government target provides different results for different societies. Societies with a higher level of development present a better economic-social-environmental performance when an environmental target is used, such as GHG emissions; on the other hand, the society with less development presents a better performance when the used target is related to the economics of the system. In order to achieve a sufficiently resilient and sustainable society, the choice of an accurate governmental target is crucial since the objectives act differently for each type of society. Results also show that decision variables have more variation in the first periods of the analysis being practically stable in the final years. Then, the initial years of the simulation analysis are the most important to stabilize the system. Therefore, in real-world societies, not only the choice of the objective is important, but also the feedback mechanisms. Those mechanisms have to be implemented as quickly as possible, in order to identify or avoid probable future catastrophic scenarios.

Abstract

Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture from flue gas mixture analogs based on ionic clathrate hydrates crystallization (using tetra-n-butyl ammonium bromide, TBAB) is investigated by optical microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The purpose of this research is to investigate the influence of the crystallization protocol (slow versus fast cooling/heating) on the subsequent semi-clathrate structures formed from a 35 wt% TBAB-H2O solution and CO2 separation efficiency from an initial gas mixture of 10%CO2 + 90%N2. In-situ Raman analyses reveal that structure type B (sometimes associated with several polymorph phases) is readily observed at the onset of the formation process regardless of the crystallization protocol. Structure type B remains stable up to a temperature close to that of dissociation, whereas polymorphs form and evolve continuously until then. Just before dissociation, structure type A is additionally observed. The protocol involving slow cooling and heating steps (similar to the isochoric pressure search method) performs slightly better in terms of selectivity than the one using the multi-cycling temperature approach (fast cooling and heating). However, within the same protocol, the selectivity greatly depends on the specific semi-clathrate structures formed. We find that the best CO2 selectivity is achieved when structure type A is formed compared to all other semi-clathrate phases. The CO2 recovery fraction is found at lower value than that measured in canonical clathrate hydrates.

Abstract

We present a measurement of W boson polarization in top-quark decays in t{bar t} events with decays to dilepton final states using 5.1 fb{sup -1} integrated luminosity in p{bar p} collisions collected by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron. A simultaneous measurement of the fractions of longitudinal (f{sub 0}) and right-handed (f{sub +}) W bosons yields the results f{sub 0} = 0.71{sub -0.17}{sup +0.18}(stat) {+-} 0.06(syst) and f{sub +} = -0.07 {+-} 0.09(stat) {+-} 0.03(syst). Combining this measurement with our previous result based on single lepton final states, we obtain f{sub 0} = 0.84 {+-} 0.09(stat) {+-} 0.05(syst) and f{sub +} = -0.16 {+-} 0.05(stat) {+-} 0.04(syst). The results are consistent with standard model expectation.

Abstract

A search for a narrow Higgs boson resonance in the diphoton mass spectrum is presented based on data corresponding to 10 fb − 1 of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF experiment from proton–antiproton collisions at s = 1.96 TeV . To increase the sensitivity of the search, we employ a multivariate discriminant technique for the first time in this channel at CDF. No evidence of signal is observed, and upper limits are set on the cross section times branching ratio of the resonant state as a function of the Higgs boson mass. The limits are interpreted in the context of the standard model with an expected (observed) limit on the cross section times branching ratio of 9.9 (17.0) times the standard model prediction at the 95% credibility level for a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV / c 2 . Moreover, a Higgs boson with suppressed couplings to fermions is excluded for masses below 114 GeV / c 2 at the 95% credibility level.

Abstract

We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with a Z boson, using up to 7.9 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity from p{bar p} collisions collected with the CDF II detector. We utilize several novel techniques, including multivariate lepton selection, multivariate trigger parametrization, and a multi-stage signal discriminant consisting of specialized functions trained to distinguish individual backgrounds. By increasing acceptance and enhancing signal discrimination, these techniques have significantly improved the sensitivity of the analysis above what was expected from a larger dataset alone. We observe no significant evidence for a signal, and we set limits on the ZH production cross section. For a Higgs boson with mass 115 GeV/c{sup 2}, we expect (observe) a limit of 3.9 (4.8) times the standard model predicted value, at the 95% credibility level.

Abstract

El pdf del artículo es la versión post-print., In the present work, the processing and characterization of electroconductive Alumina-TiC-Ni nanocomposites obtained by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) are described. These nanocomposites are singular due to the excellent mechanical properties they present (particular regarding Vickers hardness, 25.6 ± 0.7 GPa), as well as their extremely good wear behaviour, studied under "ball-on-disk" dry sliding conditions. The wear rate obtained was 25 times (almost 1.5 orders of magnitude) smaller than the value obtained for a monolithic alumina sintered under the same conditions. Flexural strength had been improved up to 75% with respect to the monolithic alumina processed under the same conditions. As these nanocomposites can be machined by electroerosion (EDM), they can adopt any shape for devices requiring a good mechanical performance and low wear rates. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Abstract

This letter reports a measurement of the top quark mass, M{sub top}, in data from p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV corresponding to 2.7 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity at the Fermilab Tevatron using the CDF II detector. Events with the lepton+jets topology are selected. An unbinned likelihood is constructed based on the dependence of the lepton transverse momentum, P{sub T}, on M{sub top}. A maximum likelihood fit to the data yields a measured mass M{sub top} = 176.9 {+-} 8.0{sub stat} {+-} 2.7{sub syst} GeV/c{sup 2}. In this measurement, the contribution by the jet energy scale uncertainty to the systematic error is negligible. The result provides an important consistency test for other M{sub top} measurements where explicit use of the jet energy is made for deriving the top quark mass.

Abstract

We report on a CDF measurement of the total cross section and rapidity distribution, d{sigma}/dy, for q{bar q} {yields} {gamma}{sup *}/Z {yields} e{sup +} e {sup -} events in the Z boson mass region (66 < M {sub ee} < 116 GeV/c {sub 2}) produced in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV with 2.1 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity. The measured cross section of 257 {+-} 16pb and d{sigma}/dy distribution are compared with Next-to-Leading-Order (NLO) and Next-to-Next-to-Leading-Order (NNLO) QCD theory predictions with CTEQ and MRST/MSTW parton distribution functions (PDFs). There is good agreement between the experimental total cross section and d{sigma}/dy measurements with theoretical calcualtion with the most recent NNLO PDFs.

Abstract

We present the result of a search for a massive color-octet vector particle, (e.g. a massive gluon) decaying to a pair of top quarks in proton–antiproton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. This search is based on 1.9 fb − 1 of data collected using the CDF detector during Run II of the Tevatron at Fermilab. We study t t ¯ events in the lepton + jets channel with at least one b-tagged jet. A massive gluon is characterized by its mass, decay width, and the strength of its coupling to quarks. These parameters are determined according to the observed invariant mass distribution of top quark pairs. We set limits on the massive gluon coupling strength for masses between 400 and 800 GeV / c 2 and width-to-mass ratios between 0.05 and 0.50. The coupling strength of the hypothetical massive gluon to quarks is consistent with zero within the explored parameter space.

Abstract

Background: Infection by human papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause of and a necessary factor for cervical cancer. There are more than 100 known HPV genotypes, although HPV genotypes do not all have the same risk of inducing cervical cancer. The main aim of this study is to know the distribution of different types of HPV in women attending a colposcopy clinic for cervical dysplasia. Methods: We prospectively identified and enrolled a cohort of women followed for cervical dysplasia who were referred to the colposcopy clinic of University Hospital Sant Joan de Deu in Barcelona, Spain, from April 2003 to April 2007. Two cervical scrape samples from each patient were collected for routine cytology and for identification of HPV DNA. During the study period, 2 techniques (Line Probe assay and microarray assay) were used consecutively. Findings: HPV DNA was detected in 68% of patients (338 of 496 women) with statistically significant differences in positive results according to the cytologic category. Overall, the type distribution showed a predominance of genotype HPV-16 (27% of the total patients) followed by HPV-53 (9.4%), HPV-51 (8%), and HPV-51 (8%). Multiple genotype detection was observed in 35.5% of the patients with HPV infection. HPV-16 was mainly associated with the probable high-risk genotypes: HPV-53 and HPV-66. Conclusion: The higher prevalence of high-risk nonvaccine genotypes should be considered to increase vaccine efficiency.

Abstract

The slow crack growth (SCG) resistance ( V–K I diagrams) of magnesium aluminate spinel and its tungsten composites with different metallic content (7, 10, 14 and 22 vol.%) is reported. It is found that tungsten plays a crucial role in the composite by increasing crack resistance: the higher the W content, the higher the stress intensity factor needed for crack extension at a given rate. The reinforcement is due to the bridging mechanism performed by metal particles, as it strongly affects the compliance of cracked specimens. Its magnitude is estimated by a compliance function Φ ( a ) from a double torsion test. From the compliance function, R -curve behaviour is predicted for the composite with highest tungsten content. It explains the effect of metal particles on SCG curves. The W–MgAl 2 O 4 interface is believed to influence the reinforcement mechanism.

Abstract

Companies producing organic coatings for the automotive industry frequently need to test newly formulated products or materials, habitually according to different production parameters, in order to determine their actual behaviour before large-scale production of the coating is implemented. Proper choice of the test for this characterisation and the method of evaluation are critical. On the one hand, the choice is important because it is often necessary to distinguish coatings with very similar performance. On the other hand, results must be obtained in relatively short times, for it is impracticable for the manufacturers to wait for the completion of outdoor exposure tests. To reduce lead times in the development process, the use of accelerated aging tests to predict durability of the coating is essential (the time needed to perform them, however, is usually at least 500 h). This article proposes the use of EIS and an electrochemical test, AC/DC/AC, which consists in a combination of impedance results and cathodic polarisations, in order to find out the performance of coatings with precision and in a very short time. These techniques have been used to determine the optimum range of curing temperatures of a primer in order to obtain the maximum anticorrosion properties. Results show very good degree of concordance between the two electrochemical tests, although the AC/DC/AC method is much faster.

Abstract

The plastic behavior of cermets based on a 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia matrix that incorporates nanometric nickel inclusions (3YTZP/n-Ni), with 2.5, 5 and 10 vol.% of nickel content, has been studied by constant load tests in compression carried out in argon atmosphere. The microstructure of these composites consists of nanometric nickel inclusions homogeneously dispersed into a fine-grained zirconia matrix (about 200 nm). The microstructural and mechanical results obtained show that the creep behavior is controlled by the zirconia matrix as in 3YTZP-based cermets with micrometric Ni inclusions (3YTZP/μ-Ni); whereas the stress exponent values are similar to those of high-purity monolithic 3YTZPs, anomalous high values of the activation energy have been measured. The ceramic/metal interface plays a crucial role for creep properties; the strong TZP/n-Ni interface matching can be at the origin of these high values of the activation energies for creep.

Abstract

The effect of the plasticizer (butyl benzyl phthalate, BBP) addition on the corrosion resistance properties of paint films has been investigated by means of different electrochemical techniques (EIS and ac/dc/ac) and accelerated tests (salt fog spray). Primers based on epoxy resin were prepared with different plasticizer content (0, 1.5, 3, 5, 11, 16 and 25% in weight ratio to epoxy resin). An optimum quantity of plasticizer content (1.5–3%) was determined that gave the maximum anticorrosive performance of the epoxy primer. Results offered by each one of the techniques were quite similar and the ac/dc/ac one offered the results in a very short time (24 h).

Abstract

The effect of the ratio of the pigment volume concentration (PVC) to the critical pigment volume concentration (CPVC), denoted hereafter by Λ, on the corrosion resistance properties of paint films has been investigated by ac impedance, potential-time measurements, cathodic disbonding and traditional accelerated tests. Painted mild steel electrodes were studied during exposure to 3.5% NaCl solution for up to 60 days. Paints based on epoxy resin were prepared at different Λ values (0.73, 0.80, 0.88, 0.93, 0.98, 1.08, 1.15 and 1.24). It is concluded that, for all systems, corrosion resistance can be affected greatly by the PVC/CPVC ratio and the conclusions offered by each of the techniques used are quite similar.

Abstract

Different epoxy primer coatings for metal substrates were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The variables were the substrate (cold rolled steel, phosphatised cold rolled steel and phosphatised electrozincated cold rolled steel), the epoxy primer (containing a Pb anticorrosive pigment and non-toxic paint containing Al and Fe oxides) and curing temperature (low temperature 160 °C and high temperature 180 °C). The primers showed excellent behaviour when applied on phosphatised steel and very poor electrochemical characteristics on phosphatised electrozincated steel. The non-toxic primer performed better than the Pb coating on phosphatised steel and electrozincated steel while it performed in a similar way to Pb primer on steel. The curing temperature had a big effect on the primer behaviour. The Pb coating performed better when it was cured at a low temperature. The coat adhesion to the substrate was tested by cathodic disbonding. It was found that the primers have very good adhesion to phosphatised steel and poor adhesion to phosphatised electrozincated steel.

Abstract

Candida spp. are increasingly important nosocomial pathogens in critically ill children. Data on risk factors of acquisition in children with candidaemia are limited. To determine the incidence, prognosis and risk factors for acquisition of nosocomial candidaemia in children, a prospective case-control study was performed between July 1998 and January 2000. Candidaemia was defined as the presence of at least one positive blood culture containing Candida spp. For each case, two controls were selected and matched for time and site of hospital admission. Logistic regression was used to obtain estimates of risk after simultaneous control for other variables. Candidaemia was diagnosed in 24 children (1.09/1000 admissions). The species most frequently isolated were Candida albicans (50%) and Candida parapsilosis (17%). Mean age was 58.2+/-58 months between cases and 41.8+/-52.2 months in controls (P not significant). Abstract

The combined electrical and structural characterization of encapsulated HgCdTe annealed in a rapid thermal processor under different temperatures and times is presented. Hall effect measurements are used for the determination of the changes in carrier concentration and mobility produced during the annealing, while structural changes due to the thermal treatment are deduced from channelled proton-induced X-ray emission measurements. The results indicate that both the carrier concentration and mobility change homogeneously throughout the crystal, reaching equilibrium values that are only a function of the annealing temperature. The evolution towards equilibrium of each parameter can be fitted to exponential laws, the time constants being a function of the annealing temperature. However, the time required to reach the equilibrium mobility is always longer (by about ×3.5) than that needed to saturate the carrier concentration, for the same temperature. The crystallinity of the samples also shows a dependence on the annealing temperature. These changes are explained on the basis of generation and annihilation of mercury vacancies through the interaction with tellurium precipitates.

Abstract

The pineal gland is a complex neuroendocrine organ with pronounced effects on central nervous system activity. Because previous studies in animals and humans have suggested an anticonvulsant role for the pineal hormone melatonin, we studied the day-night variations in plasma melatonin in normal children and children with febrile or epileptic convulsions. We found significant changes in day-night melatonin levels during convulsions, consistent with the hypothesis that melatonin has an inhibitory function on central nervous system activity.

A patient with multilobated B-cell malignant lymphoma with lesions limited to the skin is described. The light, electron microscopic, and immunohistochemical features of this unusual morphologic variant of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma are described. The nosologic position of this histologic subtype is discussed. The clinical course, with lesions confined to the skin, and the response to treatment suggest a favorable prognosis.

Abstract

In this paper, we study the dependence of the Tm (melting temperature) of complexes formed between double-stranded deoxypolynucleotides and pure destabilizer nonspecific ligands on Kc (intrinsic association constant), nc (apparent site size), and wc (cooperativity constant). Using the Sequence Generating Function (SGF) method, we have found a simple, analytical relationship between the Tm and these interaction parameters. The validity of this relationship depends strongly on the sigma value (sigma being the nucleation parameter of the deoxypolynucleotide). Through the equation so obtained, it is possible to evaluate Kc, nc, and wc from the melting temperature of three experimental thermal denaturation profiles at different r (ligand/deoxypolynucleotide ratio) values. However, when wc greater than 100, a degeneration in the wc and Kc values appears, and the study of the free deoxypolynucleotide region in the melting profile is necessary in order to accurately evaluate these two parameters. The method has been checked using complexes formed with poly(d(A-T].poly(d(A-T] and both bovine pancreatic ribonuclease and protein GP32 of phage T4 as experimental models. The applicability of the method here developed is discussed in relation to the nature of the ligands and the sigma and wc values.

Abstract

A diffusion based model of the slider method of the liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) process of HgCdTe in the Te-rich region of the phase diagram is presented. The effects of changes of density, mercury loss, moving solid-liquid interface and liquid finite dimensions are explicitly considered in the numerical calculations. A numerical description of the phase diagram by two polynomial expressions, derived from the experimental data of Harman, has been used. Step cooling, ramp cooling and supercooling processes are studied. The obtained epilayers behave as Hsieh theory predicts for binary liquids for short growth time in the absence of mercury leaks, except for the composition profile obtained. Our results are in qualitative agreement with those reported by Shaw in an earlier paper for such binary system, but differ on the layer composition and thickness. For processes longer than a characteristic time, related to the liquid thickness, the growth rate decreases and, if mercury loss is present, the composition of the grown layer becomes richer in cadmium. The effect of mercury loss is very pronounced in step cooling and supercooling processes with small cooling rates. If the dimensions and the mercury loss flux of a system are known the resulting epilayers can be simulated. A good agreement is found when the model is applied to experimental data.

Abstract

Closed form functions, describing the equilibrium phase diagram liquids and solidus lines of the Hg-Cd-Te system in the Te-rich corner are presented. Harman's experimental data of LPE epilayer composition and modified direct observation liquidus temperature are used for the numerical functions determination. The difference between LPE epilayer composition and thermodynamic equilibrium solidus composition is pointed out, and a LPE simulation procedure is used to deduce solidus line data from epilayer composition. This numerical description of the phase diagram can be satisfactorily used in simulation programs of epitaxial processes.

Resistivity and Hall coefficient of bulk p-type HgZnTe (x = 0.15) grown by THM have been measured as a function of magnetic field up to 7 T at different temperatures. The measured samples show mixed conduction behaviour, analogous to that observed in p-type HgCdTe. A three-band model that includes electrons, heavy holes and light holes is needed to explain the high magnetic field results.

Introduction Le diabete 1 est une maladie bi-hormonale avec un deficit en insuline et une secretion de glucagon anormale. L'ensemble favorise l'instabilite glycemique. Dans le cadre de l'inflammation chronique des ilots, les cytokines peuvent contribuer a la perte de fonction et a l'apoptose. L'IL-1 beta est une cytokine au carrefour des voies du stress metabolique et inflammatoire. Nous avons etudie l'expression de l'IL-1beta dans les ilots de diabetiques de type 1 (DT1) Materiels et methodes L'etude a repose sur l'analyse de sections pancreatiques de DT1 ( n = 13), de sujets presentant des autoanticorps (AC + n = 6) et des sujets controles ( n = 5) provenant du consortium nPOD. L'expression de l'IL-1 beta a ete comparee simultanement par hybridation in situ et par immunfluorescence Resultats Nous avons observe que les ilots des DT1 (11/13) et les sujets AC + (5/6) contenaient plus d'ARNm de l'IL-1beta que les controles avec une importante variabilite intra et inter-sujets. En immunofluorescence, l'IL-1 beta etait retrouvee dans les cellules alpha chez 9/13 DT1 meme en l'absence de cellules beta detectables, dans les cellules alpha et beta chez 5/7 sujets AC + et dans les cellules beta de 2/5 controles. Conclusion L'expression d'IL-1 dans les cellules alpha au cours du DT1 est une donnee nouvelle dont la signification reste a preciser.
