Abstract

This work is meant to respond the challenge of manufacturing osmium targets for nuclear astrophysics experiments using the activation method with alpha particles. In this context, PLD (Pulsed Laser Deposition) was used to prepare osmium targets without specks or wrinkles and with a very well defined and constant thickness. Characterization techniques as RBS (Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry), AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy), SEM/EDX (Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) and XRD (X-ray Diffraction) were used to determine accurately the features of the obtained targets. The obtained results reveal that the PLD technique is suitable for the preparation of high quality thin/thick osmium targets.

Abstract

The isotope used in this research was supplied by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science by the Isotope Program in the Office of Nuclear Physics., The neutron capture cross section of 154Gd was measured from 1 eV to 300 keV in the experimental area located 185 m from the CERN n_TOF neutron spallation source, using a metallic sample of gadolinium, enriched to 67% in 154Gd. The capture measurement, performed with four C6D6 scintillation detectors, has been complemented by a transmission measurement performed at the GELINA time-of-flight facility (JRC-Geel), thus minimising the uncertainty related to sample composition. An accurate Maxwellian averaged capture cross section (MACS) was deduced over the temperature range of interest for s process nucleosynthesis modelling. We report a value of 880(50) mb for the MACS at kT = 30 keV, significantly lower compared to values available in literature. Abstract

A novel technique of direct neutron-multiplicity sorting with a flat-efficiency detector is proposed to resolve the long-standing discrepancy between the Livermore and Saclay data of partial photoneutron cross sections. A flat-response neutron detector with the detection efficiency of 36 . 5 ± 1 . 6 % over a neutron energy range 0.01–5.0 MeV was developed by optimizing triple-ring configurations of He proportional counters embedded in a polyethylene moderator. The technique forms a foundation of measuring cross sections with x = 1 − 3 for the photonuclear data project of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The methodology of direct neutron-multiplicity sorting and key experimental elements are presented.

Abstract

This paper presents precision measurements of electromagnetic decay probabilities associated with electric dipole transitions in the prolate-deformed nucleus 183Re. The nucleus of interest was formed using the fusion evaporation reaction 180Hf(7Li,4n)183Re at a beam energy of 30 MeV at the tandem accelerator at the HH-IFIN Institute, Bucharest Romania. Coincident decay gamma rays from near-yrast cascades were detected using the combined HPGe-LaBr3 detector array ROSPHERE. The time differences between cascade gamma rays were measured using the LaBr3 detectors to determine the half-lives of the two lowest lying spin-parity 9/2- states at excitation energies of 496 and 617 keV to be 5.65(5) and 2.08(3) ns respectively. The deduced E1 transition rates from these two states are discussed in terms of the K-hindrance between the low-lying structures in this prolate-deformed nucleus.

Abstract

The ROmanian array for SPectroscopy in HEavy ion REactions (ROSPHERE) has been designed as a multi-detector setup dedicated to γ-ray spectroscopy studies at the Bucharest 9 MV Tandem accelerator. Consisting of up to 25 detectors (either Compton suppressed HPGe detectors or fast LaBr3(Ce) scintillator detectors) together with a state of the art plunger device, ROSPHERE is a powerful tool for lifetime measurements using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift (RDDS) and the in-beam Fast Electronic Scintillation Timing (FEST) methods. The array's geometry, detectors, electronics and data acquisition system are described. Selected results from the first experimental campaigns are also presented.

Abstract

The ( J , T ) = ( 1 , 1 ) parity doublet in 20 Ne at 11.26 MeV is a good candidate to study parity violation in nuclei. However, its energy splitting is known with insufficient accuracy for quantitative estimates of parity violating effects. To improve on this unsatisfactory situation, nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments using linearly and circularly polarized γ -ray beams were used to determine the energy difference of the parity doublet Δ E = E ( 1 − ) − E ( 1 + ) = − 3.2 ( ± 0.7 ) stat ( − 1.2 + 0.6 ) sys keV and the ratio of their integrated cross sections I s , 0 ( + ) / I s , 0 ( − ) = 29 ( ± 3 ) stat ( − 7 + 14 ) sys . Shell-model calculations predict a parity-violating matrix element having a value in the range 0.46–0.83 eV for the parity doublet. The small energy difference of the parity doublet makes 20 Ne an excellent candidate to study parity violation in nuclear excitations.

Abstract

Cross sections for 147,149 Sm(p,n) 147,149 Eu and 147,149 Sm(p, γ ) 148,150 Eu were measured using the activation method. The results are compared to the predictions of the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model. Different γ -ray strength functions have been tested against the experimental values. In the case of 150 Eu, in order to reproduce the experimental isomeric population cross sections, various scenarios for unknown branching ratios of certain discrete states have been discussed. The results provide constraints for the optical model parameters dedicated to this insufficiently known area of isotopes. Such cross sections for (p, γ ) reactions at energies below the Coulomb barrier are valuable for p -process nucleosynthesis calculations.

Abstract

We developed a Monte-Carlo code for describing the reaction kinematics of the two-body direct processes employed of the EXOTIC beam-line of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL) for the production of light weakly bound radioactive ion beams at energies of a few MeV/u. The program calculates the phase-space distribution of both primary and secondary beams at the target exit and uses these quantities to optimize the secondary beam selection with the EXOTIC spectrometer. The calculations have been performed and compared with the available experimental data for two reactions: (1)H(2)((17)O, (17)F)n and (3)He((6)Li, (8)B)n. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The EXPADES (EXotic PArticle DEtection System) detector array consists of 16 Double Side Silicon Strip Detectors (DSSSD) with active areas of 64 × 64 mm 2 , arranged in 8 ΔE (40/50 μm)–E (300 μm) telescopes. All detector faces are segmented into 32 × 2-mm wide strips, ensuring a 2 × 2 mm 2 pixel configuration. Eight ionization chambers can be alternatively used as ΔE stages or, if needed, as an additional third layer for more complex triple telescopes. The signals from silicon ΔE layers and from ionization chambers are read by standard electronics, while innovative 32-channel ASIC chips are employed for the readout of the E stages. The results of off-line tests with alpha sources and from the first in-beam experiment with a 17 O beam are presented.

Abstract

We report on the measurement of the half-life of the yrast I π = 5 − state in the transitional nucleus 136 Ce using a combined HPGe-LaBr3(Ce) scintillator gamma-ray detection array. The measured value for the E 1 decay is approximately half a nanosecond, which corresponds to an E 1 decay strength of approximately 2 × 10 − 6 Wu. This value is in line with single-particle type E 1 decays in this mass region and suggests no sign of additional K-hindrance associated with axially symmetric quadrupole deformations observed for lighter cerium isotopes.

Abstract

We have studied the elastic scattering of the exotic 17 F nuclei from 208 Pb at Coulomb barrier energies. For the measurement we used a new detector array with pixel structure and a large solid angle. Optical potential analysis shows that 17 F has an imaginary potential much less deep than 19 F. Information on the exclusive 17 F breakup cross section has been deduced too.

Abstract

Results of new cross section measurements are presented for the following neutron-induced reactions: 58Ni(n, p) 58 m + g Co , 58Ni(n, p)58mCo, 58Ni(n, x)57Co, 58Ni(n, 2n)57Ni, 60Ni(n, p) 60 m + g Co , 60Ni(n, p)60mCo, 61Ni(n, p)61Co, 61Ni(n, x)60mCo, 62Ni(n, x)61Co, and 59Co(n, 2n) 58 m + g Co with emphasis on incident energies between 14 and 20 MeV. In addition, new results have been obtained for the isomer ratios of the 58Ni(n, p) 58 m + g Co , the 60Ni(n, p) 60 m + g Co and 59Co(n, 2n) 58 m + g Co reactions. Detailed model calculations were undertaken to study the systematics of (n,xp) reactions on Ni isotopes and the use of the measured isomer ratios for the determination of the effective moment of inertia in the level density expression. Good overall agreement was obtained and, in particular, the case of the 58Ni target isotope now shows a complete physically consistent database that is ideal to test model calculations. The difference in spin between isomer and ground state of ΔJ=3 for the 58Co and 60Co residual nuclei results in a sensitivity to the spin dependence of the level density in these nuclei. However, at present, measurement uncertainties and uncertainties associated with the decay schemes preclude a definitive conclusion about the appropriate value of the effective moment of inertia. A comparison was made between a locally optimized parameter set based on all available data and a global approach. This approach allowed to identify where problems with the global approach can be expected. The locally optimized parameter set includes for the first time gamma-ray strength-functions based on an improved systematics of the gamma-ray widths.
