Abstract

A useful parametrization of the energy spectrum of galactic cosmic rays (GCR) near Earth is offered by the so-called force-field model which describes the shape of the entire spectrum with a single parameter, the modulation potential. While the usefulness of the force-field approximation has been confirmed for regular periods of solar modulation, it was not tested explicitly for disturbed periods, when \GCR\ are locally modulated by strong interplanetary transients. Here we use direct measurements of protons and α -particles performed by the \PAMELA\ space-borne instrument during December 2006, including a major Forbush decrease, in order to directly test the validity of the force-field parameterization. We conclude that (1) The force-field parametrization works very well in describing the energy spectra of protons and α -particles directly measured by \PAMELA\ outside the Earths atmosphere; (2) The energy spectrum of \GCR\ can be well parameterized by the force-field model also during a strong Forbush decrease; (3) The estimate of the \GCR\ modulation parameter, obtained using data from the world-wide neutron monitor network, is in good agreement with the spectra directly measured by \PAMELA\ during the studied interval. This result is obtained on the basis of a single event analysis, more events need to be analyzed.

Abstract

This work devoted to the description of the method for splash albedo protons identification in the satellite-born experiment PAMELA. In contrast to the reentrant albedo particles, which enter into the main aperture of the instrument, the direct albedo particles enter from the opposite direction, so they pass a few detectors, including calorimeter, before being register by the magnetic spectrometer. The developed method take into account the influence of these detectors on the selection of events and measurements of their characteristics. To test this method the energy spectrum of reentrant albedo protons in various regions of the near-Earth space reconstructed; it is in a good agreement with the classical measurements in the main aperture. Therefore, this method can be useful to obtain a new physical data about fluxes of splash albedo protons in the PAMELA experiment, which, unlike the reentrant albedo, can be study even at high geomagnetic latitudes.

Abstract

In this work the results of data analysis of the deuteron albedo radiation obtained in the PAMELA experiment are presented. PAMELA is an international space experiment carried out on board of the satellite Resurs DK-1. The high precision detectors allow to register and identify cosmic ray particles in a wide energy range. The albedo deuteron spectrum in the energy range 70 - 600 MeV/nucleon has been measured. © 2015 Elsevier B.V..

Abstract

The absolute muon flux between 20 and 3000 GeV is measured with the L3 magnetic muon spectrometer for zenith angles ranging from 0°to 58°. Due to the large exposure of about 150 m2sr d, and the excellent momentum resolution of the L3 muon chambers, a precision of 2.3% at 150 GeV in the vertical direction is achieved.The ratio of positive to negative muons is studied between 20 and 500 GeV, and the average vertical muon charge ratio is found to be 1.285±0.003(stat.)±0.019(syst.)., Physics Letters B, 598 (1-2), ISSN:0370-2693, ISSN:0031-9163, ISSN:1873-2445

The Pamela apparatus will allow precise measurements of cosmic rays in Low Earth Orbit, mainly focusing on the antiparticles component. The apparatus is now ready for flight, and the launch is foreseen during June 2006. The paper briefly reports the status of the experiment, and the performances of the various components as measured before the launch.

Abstract

PAMELA is a satellite borne experiment designed to study with great accuracy cosmic rays of galactic, solar, and trapped nature hi a wide energy range (protons: 80 MeV-700 GeV, electrons 50 MeV-400 GeV). Main objective is the study of the antimatter component: antiprotons (80 MeV-190 GeV), positrons (50 MeV-270 GeV) and search for antinuclei with a precision of the order of 10(-8)). The experiment, housed on board the Russian Resurs-DK1 satellite, was launched on June, 15(th) 2006 in a 350 X 600 km orbit with an inclination of 70 degrees. In this work we describe the scientific objectives awl the performance of PAMELA in its first two years of operation. Data oil protons of trapped, secondary and galactic nature - as well as measurements of the December 13(th) 2006 Solar Particle Event - are also provided.

Abstract

PAMELA is a satellite-borne experiment designed to study charged particles in the cosmic radiation, optimized in particular for antimatter components search. The experiment is mounted on the Resurs DK1 satellite that was launched on June 15th 2006 from Baikonur cosmodrome and is now collecting data from a semi-polar elliptical orbit around the Earth. The core of the PAMELA apparatus is a magnetic spectrometer, designed to determine precisely the rigidity and the absolute charge of particles crossing the detector. The tracking system is composed of six planes of silicon microstrip detectors dipped in an almost uniform magnetic field generated by a permanent magnet made of an Nd–Fe–B alloy. Some preliminary analysis about the spectrometer's performances, made using data collected since July 2006 till June 2007, are here reviewed.

Abstract

PAMELA is a composite particle detector which will be launched during the first half of 2006 on board the Russian satellite Resurs DK-1 from Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. This experiment is mainly conceived for the study of cosmic-ray antiparticles and for the search for light antinuclei, but other issues related to the cosmic-ray physics will be investigated. In this work the structure of the whole apparatus is shortly discussed with particular attention to the magnetic spectrometer, which has been designed and built in Firenze.

Abstract

The e+e− → e+e−hadrons reaction, where one of the two electrons is detected in a low polar-angle calorimeter, is analysed in order to measure the hadronic photon structure function F2γ. The full high-energy and high-luminosity data set, collected with the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies 189 GeV ≼ √s ≼ 209 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 608 pb−1 is used. The Q2 range 11 GeV2 ≼ Q2 ≼ 34 GeV2 and the x range 0.006 ≼ x ≼ 0.556 are considered. The data are compared with recent parton density functions., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

Abstract

Neutral-current four-fermion production, e + e − → f f ¯ f ′ f ¯ ′ , is studied in 0.7 fb −1 of data collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies s = 183 – 209 GeV . Four final states are considered: q q ¯ ν ν ¯ , q q ¯ l + l − , l + l − l ′ + l ′ − and l + l − ν ν ¯ , where l denotes either an electron or a muon. Their cross sections are measured and found to agree with the Standard Model predictions. In addition, the e + e − → Z γ ∗ → f f ¯ f ′ f ¯ ′ process is studied and its total cross section at the average centre-of-mass energy 〈 s 〉 = 196.6 GeV is found to be 0.29 ± 0.05 ± 0.03 pb , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 0.22 pb. Finally, the mass spectra of the q q ¯ l + l − final states are analysed to search for the possible production of a new neutral heavy particle, for which no evidence is found.

Abstract

Tau neutrinos interacting inside the Earth produce τ leptons which thereafter can decay inside the atmosphere. The propagation of extremely energetic ν τ 's and τ 's through the Earth is studied by means of a detailed Monte Carlo simulation and results are compared with analytical approximation. The rates of τ 's emerging from the Earth are determined as a function of τ 's energy for several cosmic neutrino models.

Abstract

The process e+e-→Zγ where the Z boson decays into hadrons or neutrinos, is studied with data collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies from 189 up to 209 GeV. The cross sections are measured and found to be in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. Limits on triple neutral-gauge-boson couplings, forbidden in the Standard Model at tree level, are derived. Limits on the energy scales at which the anomalous couplings could be manifest are set. They range from 0.3 to 2.3 TeV depending on the new physics effect under consideration. © 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

The cross section of the process e + e − → Z γ γ → q q ¯ γ γ is measured with 215 pb−1 of data collected with the L3 detector during the final LEP run at centre-of-mass energies around 205 GeV and 207 GeV. No deviation from the Standard Model expectation is observed. The full data sample of 713 pb−1, collected above the Z resonance, is used to constrain the coefficients of anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings to: − 0.02 GeV − 2 a 0 / Λ 2 0.03 GeV − 2 , − 0.07 GeV − 2 a c / Λ 2 0.05 GeV − 2 , at 95% confidence level.

Abstract

Results are presented from a study of the structure of high energy hadronic events recorded by the L3 detector at s ⩾192 GeV. The distributions of several event shape variables are compared to resummed O (α s 2 ) QCD calculations. We determine the strong coupling constant at three average centre-of-mass energies: 194.4, 200.2 and 206.2 GeV. These measurements, combined with previous L3 measurements at lower energies, demonstrate the running of α s as expected in QCD and yield α s ( m Z )=0.1227±0.0012±0.0058, where the first uncertainty is experimental and the second is theoretical.

Abstract

NESTOR is a deep-sea water Cherenkov neutrino detector now under construction for deployment in the Mediterranean off Greece. Its key component is an optical module employing a photomultiplier tube with a 15 in. hemispherical photocathode in a transparent glass pressure housing. Extensive tests have been made on the sensitivity, uniformity, time resolution, noise rates and mechanical properties of the module: several test deployments have been made at sea.

Abstract

An underwater neutrino astrophysics laboratory, to be located in the international waters off the Southwest of Greece, near the town of Pylos is now under construction. In the last two years a group of physicists from Greece and Russia have carried out two demonstration experiments in 4km deep water, counting muons and verifying the adequacy of the deep sea site. Plans are presented for a 100, 000 m 2 high energy neutrino detector composed of a hexagon of hexagonal towers, with 1176 optical detector units. A progress report is given and the physics potential of a siggle tower with 168 phototubes (currently under construction) is described.

Abstract

The NEMO.RD Project is a feasibility study of a km 3 underwater telescope for high energy astrophysical neutrinos to be located in the Mediterranea Sea. At present this study concerns: i) Monte Carlo simulation study of the capabilities of various arrays of phototubes in order to determine the detector geometry that can optimize performance and cost; ii) design of low power consumption electronic cards for data acquisition and transmission to shore; iii) feasibility study of mechanics, deployment, connection and maintenance of such a detector in collaboration with petrol industries having experience of undersea operations; iv) oceanographic exploration of various sites in search for the optimal one. A brief report on the status of points i) and iv) is presented here.

Abstract

The process e(+)e(-) --> Zgamma, where the Z boson decays into hadrons or neutrinos, is studied with data collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies from 189 up to 209 GeV The cross sections are measured and found to be in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. Limits on triple neutral-gauge-boson couplings, forbidden in the Standard Model at tree level, are derived. Limits on the energy scales at which the anomalous couplings could be manifest are set. They range from 0.3 to 2.3 TeV depending on the new physics effect under consideration. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.
