Spider angioma refers to a type of telangiectasis that presents slightly beneath the skin surface on the face, neck, arms or upper trunk, often manifesting with a central red spot and reddish extensions that radiate outwards like a spider's web. The cutaneous spider angioma may be benign but it often indicates abnormal liver function, especially in patients with chronic cirrhosis. The spider angioma is irreversible and rarely occurred diffusely over the body or with giant sizes. Here, we report two rare multiple and giant spider angioma cases in patients with HIV/AIDS who developed chronic cirrhosis. In addition, we comprehensively reviewed related literatures and evaluated the existing possible mechanisms of spider angioma.

Background Although recent studies have revealed an association between the composition of the gut microbiota and obesity, whether specific gut microbiota cause obesity has not been determined. Objectives The aim of this study is to determine the causal relationship between specific gut microbiota and abdominal obesity. Based on genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics, we performed a 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to evaluate whether the gut microbiota affects abdominal obesity. Methods Gut microbiota GWAS in 1126 twin pairs (age range, 18-89 years; 89% were females) from the TwinsUK study were used as exposure data. The primary outcome tested was trunk fat mass (TFM) GWAS in 492,805 participants (age range, 40-69 years; 54% were females) from the UK Biobank. The gut microbiota were classified at family, genus, and species levels. A feature was defined as a distinct family, genus, or species. MR analysis was mainly performed by an inverse variance-weighted test or Wald ratio test, depending on the number of instrumental variables (IVs) involved. A sensitivity analysis was performed on significant results by a weighted median test and a weighted genetic risk score (GRS) analysis. Results Results of MR analyses provided evidence of a causal association between 3 microbiota features and TFM, including 1 family [Lachnosiraceae; P = 0.02; β = 0.001 (SEE, 4.28 × 10-4)], 1 genus [Bifidobacterium; P = 5.0 × 10-9; β = -0.08 (SEE, 0.14)], and 1 species [Prausnitzii; P = 0.03; β = -0.007 (SEE, 0.003)]. Both the weighted median test and GRS analysis successfully validated the association of the genetically predicted family, Lachnosiraceae (Pweighted median = 0.03; PGRS = 0.004). Conclusions Our findings provided evidence of a causal association between gut microbiota and TFM in UK adults and identified specific bacteria taxa that may regulate the fat metabolism, thus offering new direction for the treatment of obesity.

In this paper, we investigate a variant of the restarted GMRES method for solving a series of large sparse linear systems. Restarting is carried out by augmenting Krylov subspaces with some recently generated error approximations from the seed system. The method can preserve a nice property that allows solving the seed and the added linear systems at the cost of only one matrix–vector multiplication per iteration. Compared with solving each added linear system separately, the advantage of the new scheme is to lower down the overall cost of solving all added linear systems. Numerical experiments illustrate the efficiency of the acceleration strategy.

There is substantial evidence supporting the notion that the primary somatosensory (S1) cortex is an important structure involved in the perceptional component of pain. However, investigations have mainly focused on other pain-related formations, and few reports have been provided to investigate the synaptic plasticity in the S1 cortex in response to persistent pain. In the present study, we report that bee venom (BV) injection triggered an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory synaptic transmission in the S1 cortex in rats. Using a multi-electrode array recording, we found that BV-induced persistent inflammatory pain led to temporal and spatial enhancement of synaptic plasticity. Moreover, slice patch clamp recordings on identified pyramidal neurons demonstrated that BV injection increased presynaptic and postsynaptic transmission in excitatory synapses and decreased postsynaptic transmission in inhibitory synapses in the layer II/III neurons within the S1 cortex. In immunohistochemistry and Western blot sections, the distribution and expression of total AMPA receptor subunits and gamma-amino butyric acid-A (GABAA) were unaffected, although the membrane fractions of GluR2 and GABAA were decreased, and their cytosolic fractions were increased in contrast. The change of GluR1 was opposite to that of GluR2, and GluR3 did not change significantly. Our studies, therefore, provide direct evidence for both presynaptic and postsynaptic changes in synapses within the S1 cortex in persistent nociception, which are probably related to the membrane trafficking of GluR1, GluR2, and GABAA. Perspective: Increased synaptic plasticity was detected in S1 after peripheral nociception, with enhanced excitatory and decreased inhibitory synaptic transmissions. Increased GluR1, and decreased GABAAα1 and GluR2 membrane trafficking were detected. Therefore, the disrupted excitatory/inhibitory balance in transmissions is involved in nociception processing, and S1 can be a potential antinociceptive site.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) has been linked to inflammation induced by intestinal microbiota. Poria cocos polysaccharides (PCP) possesses anti-inflammation and immunomodulation functions; however, its preventive effects against NASH and potential mechanisms need to be explored.The composition of PCP was determined using ion chromatography. C57BL/6 mice were administered the methionine and choline deficient (MCD) diet for 4 weeks to establish the NASH model or methionine-choline-sufficient (MCS) diet to serve as the control. Mice were assigned to the MCS group, MCD group, low-dose PCP (LP) group, and high-dose PCP (HP) group, and were administered the corresponding medications via gavage. Serum biochemical index analysis and liver histopathology examination were performed to verify the successful establishment of NASH model and to evaluate the efficacy of PCP. The composition of intestinal bacteria was profiled through 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Hepatic RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) was performed to explore the potential mechanisms, which were further confirmed using qPCR, western blot, and immunohistochemistry.PCP consists of glucose, galactose, mannose, D-glucosamine hydrochloride, xylose, arabinose, and fucose. PCP could significantly alleviate symptoms of NASH, including histological liver damage, impaired hepatic function, and increased oxidative stress. Meanwhile, HP could reshape the composition of intestinal bacteria by significantly increasing the relative abundance of Faecalibaculum and decreasing the level of endotoxin load derived from gut bacteria. PCP could also downregulate the expression of pathways associated with immunity and inflammation, including the chemokine signaling pathway, Toll-like receptor signaling pathway, and NF-kappa B signaling pathway. The expression levels of CCL3 and CCR1 (involved in the chemokine signaling pathway), Tlr4, Cd11b, and NF-κb (involved in the NF-kappa B signaling pathway), and Tnf-α (involved in the TNF signaling pathway) were significantly reduced in the HP group compared to the MCD group.PCP could prevent the development of NASH, which may be associated with the modulation of intestinal microbiota and the downregulation of the NF-κB/CCL3/CCR1 axis.

Four new rare-earth nitronyl nitroxide radical complexes, [Ln(hfac)3(NITPh-Pa)2][0.5CH3(CH2)5CH3] (Ln = Gd(1), Tb(2), Dy(3), Ho(4), hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate, NITPh-Pa = 2-(3′,4′-dioxylmethylene-phenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-imidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide), have been synthesized. The X-ray crystal structure analysis revealed that four compounds have similar mononuclear tri-spin structures, in which the Ln(III) ions are eight-coordinated by two nitronyl nitroxide radicals and three hexafluoroacetylacetonate ligands to form a slightly distorted dodecahedron. In complexes 1–4, isolated mononuclear molecules connect each other through intermolecular hydrogen bonds to form 3D supermolecular framework. Magnetic investigation indicates there are ferromagnetic interactions between Gd(III) ions and radicals in complex 1. Alternating current(ac) magnetic susceptibilities of complexes 2 and 3 show that there are no non-zero out-of-phase signal, which indicates the inexistence of slow magnetic relaxation. The luminescence properties of complex 2 exhibit the characteristic emission peaks of Tb3+ ions and the potential for recognition of Cr2O72− and Cr3+ ions. Furthermore, nearly linear at low concentration and the low detection limit (0.01 μM) indicate that complex 2 may potentially be acted as luminescence-based sensor for quantitative and highly sensitive detection of Cr2O72− ion.

GTPase-activating proteins (GAPs) play critical roles in the spatial and temporal control of small GTPases. The budding yeast Bem3 is a GAP for Cdc42, a Rho GTPase crucial for actin and septin organization. Bem3 localizes to the sites of polarized growth. However, the amino acid sequence determinants mediating recruitment of Bem3 to its physiological sites of action and those important for Bem3 function are not clear. Here, we show that Bem3's localization is guided by two distinct targeting regions-the PX-PH-domain-containing TD1 and the coiled-coil-containing TD2. TD2 localization is largely mediated by its interaction with the polarisome component Epo1 via heterotypic coiled-coil interaction. This finding reveals a novel role for the polarisome in linking Bem3 to its functional target, Cdc42. We also show that the coiled-coil domain of Bem3 interacts homotypically and this interaction is important for the regulation of Cdc42 by Bem3. Moreover, we show that overexpression of a longer version of the TD2 domain disrupts septin-ring assembly in a RhoGAP-independent manner, suggesting that TD2 may be capable of interacting with proteins implicated in septin-ring assembly. Furthermore, we show that the longer version of TD2 interacts with Kss1, a MAPK involved in filamentous growth. Kss1 is reported to localize mainly in the nucleus. We find that Kss1 also localizes to the sites of polarized growth and Bem3 interacts with Kss1 at the septin-ring assembly site. Our study provides new insights in Bem3's localization and function.

Solubility and bioavailability of drug molecules are the key factors influencing their therapeutic effectiveness in-vivo. The desired drug concentration in systemic circulation can be achieved through the required dissolution of the drug in the biological environment which ultimately affects the pharmacological response. Efavirenz is an anti-HIV molecule with low solubility and variable bioavailability ( IIIB strain. The nanoparticle formulations were developed using solvent evaporation method and characterized for its size (110–283 nm), charge (−21 to −33 mV), % entrapment efficiency (57–95%), viscosity of nanosuspension (2.39–4.2 cP) and surface area of the particles (1.4 m 2 /g). The fourier transform infrared analysis and differential scanning calorimetry analysis of the pure drug and nanoparticles revealed the compatibility and stability of drug in nanoparticles. The in-vitro dissolution studies of the nanoparticles in distilled water media using type-1 USP dissolution apparatus at 100 rpm showed improved drug release based on the polymer composition, as compared with marketed formulations (capsules). The cytotoxicity and therapeutic activity of nanoparticles was studied by MTT assay in C8166 cell lines and syncytium formation assay using HIV-1 IIIB strain infected cell lines, respectively. Cell uptake of the nanoparticles was studied by confocal microscopy. The formulated nanoparticles were found to be safe and exhibiting 2-fold increase in therapeutic activity compared to pure drug, which could be attributed to improved dissolution and high cell uptake.

Based on the accelerated Hermitian and skew-Hermitian splitting iteration scheme (Bai and Golub, 2007), we propose a new two-parameter matrix splitting preconditioner in this paper. Spectral properties of the preconditioned matrix are analyzed in detail. Furthermore, based on this preconditioner, an improved version of matrix splitting preconditioner is presented and analyzed. Finally, performance of the preconditioners is compared by using GMRES( m ) as an iterative solver on linear systems arising from the discretization of Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations.

As our ongoing work on research of gelatinase inhibitors, an array of hydrazide-containing peptidomimetic derivatives bearing quinoxalinone as well as spiro-heterocyclic backbones were designed, synthesized, and assayed for their in vitro enzymatic inhibitory effects. The results demonstrated that both the quinoxalinone (series I and II) and 1,4-dithia-7-azaspiro[4,4]nonane-based hydrazide peptidomimetics (series III) displayed remarkably selectivity towards gelatinase A as compared to APN, with IC50 values in the micromole range. Structure-activity relationships were herein briefly discussed. Given evidences have validated that gelatinase inhibition may be contributable to the therapy of HIV-1 infection, all the target compounds were also submitted to the preliminary in vitro anti-HIV-1 evaluation. It resulted that gelatinase inhibition really has positive correlation with anti-HIV-1 activity, especially compounds 4m and 7h, which gave enhanced gelatinase inhibition in comparison with the positive control LY52, and also decent anti-HIV-1 potencies. The FlexX docking results provided a straightforward insight into the binding pattern between inhibitors and gelatinase, as well as the selective inhibition towards gelatinase over APN. Collectively, our research encouraged potent gelatinase inhibitors might be used in the development of anti-HIV-1 agents. And else, compounds 4m and 7h might be promising candidates to be considered for further chemical optimization.

Experimental studies have indicated that prolonged ketamine exposure in neonates at anesthetic doses causes neuronal apoptosis, which contributes to long-term impairments of learning and memory later in life. The neuronal excitotoxicity mediated by compensatory upregulation of N-methyl- d -aspartate receptors (NMDARs) is proposed to be the underlying mechanism. However, this view does not convincingly explain why excitotoxicity-related apoptotic injury develops selectively in immature neurons. We proposed that the GABAA receptors (GABAARs)-mediated excitatory synaptic signaling due to high expression of the Na+-K+-2Cl− co-transporter (NKCC1), occurring during the early neuronal development period, plays a distinct role in the susceptibility of immature neurons to ketamine-induced injury. Using whole-cell patch-clamp recordings from the forebrain slices containing the anterior cingulate cortex, we found that in vivo repeated ketamine administration significantly induced neuronal hyperexcitability in neonatal, but not adolescent, rats. Such hyperexcitability was accompanied by the increase both in GABAAR- and NMDAR-mediated synaptic transmissions. An interference with the NKCC1 by bumetanide treatment completely reversed these enhanced effects of ketamine exposure and blocked GABAAR-mediated postsynaptic current activity. Thus, these findings were significant as they showed, for the first time, that GABAAR-mediated excitatory action may contribute distinctly to neuronal excitotoxic effects of ketamine on immature neurons in the developing brain.

Searching for more safe and effective agents for HIV treatments is still an urgent topic worldwide. Based on our continuous modifications on the benzophenone derivatives as HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) inhibitors, a new template bearing N-phenylbenzenesulfonamide (PBSA) structure was designed to enhance the interactions with HIV-1 RT. In this manuscript, a series of PBSA derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their anti-HIV-1 activity. The preliminary test showed that these compounds were potent to inhibit wild-type HIV-1 with EC50 values ranging of 0.105–14.531 μmol/L. In particular, compound 13f not only has high anti-HIV-1 activity (0.108 μmol/L), but also possesses low toxicity with a TI value of 1816.6. Furthermore, the major interactions of the inhibitor 13f with HIV-1 RT were also investigated using the molecular modelling. Our discovered structure-activity relationships (SARs) of these analogues may serve as an important clue for further optimizations.

Background Ricin is a type II ribosome-inactivating protein (RIP) that potently inactivates eukaryotic ribosomes by removing a specific adenine residue at the conserved α-sarcin/ricin loop of 28S ribosomal RNA (rRNA). Here, we try to increase the specificity of the enzymatically active ricin A chain (RTA) towards human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) by adding a loop with HIV protease recognition site to RTA. Methods HIV-specific RTA variants were constructed by inserting a peptide with HIV-protease recognition site either internally or at the C-terminal region of wild type RTA. Cleavability of variants by viral protease was tested in vitro and in HIV-infected cells. The production of viral p24 antigen and syncytium in the presence of C-terminal variants was measured to examine the anti-HIV activities of the variants. Results C-terminal RTA variants were specifically cleaved by HIV-1 protease both in vitro and in HIV-infected cells. Upon proteolysis, the processed variants showed enhanced antiviral effect with low cytotoxicity towards uninfected cells. Conclusions RTA variants with HIV protease recognition sequence engineered at the C-terminus were cleaved and the products mediated specific inhibitory effect towards HIV replication. General significance Current cocktail treatment of HIV infection fails to eradicate the virus from patients. Here we illustrate the feasibility of targeting an RIP towards HIV-infected cells by incorporation of HIV protease cleavage sequence. This approach may be generalized to other RIPs and is promising in drug design for combating HIV.

Six new lignans, schisphenlignans F-K (1-6), together with ten known ones, were isolated from the leaves and stems of Schisandra sphenanthera. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods, including extensive NMR, MS and CD spectra. In addition, some compounds were tested for their acute activity on insulin sensitivity in 3T3-L1 differentiated adipocytes and anti-HIV-1 activity. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A series of 5,6-dihydroxypyrimidine analogs were synthesized and evaluated for their anti-HIV activity in vitro. Among all of the analogs, several compounds exhibited significant anti-HIV activity, especially 1b and 1e, which showed the most potent anti-HIV activity with EC50 values of 0.14 and 0.15 μM, and TI (therapeutic index) values of >300 and >900, respectively. Further docking studies revealed that the representative compounds 1e and 3a could meet the HIV-1 integrase inhibition minimal requirements of a chelating domain (two metal ions) and an aromatic domain (π–π stacking interactions).

AIM: To evaluate the anti-HIV activities of extracts from two commonly forms of Pu-erh tea (fermented), green tea-like (unfermented). METHODS: The cytotoxicities of extracts on C8166, MT4 and PBMC were assessed by MTT and the anti-HIV activities of extracts were evaluated by syncytium reduction and p24 antigen assay. RESULTS: All extracts had low cytotoxicities with the CC50 from 120.63 to 524.95 mu g.mL(-1). All extracts can inhibit HIV-induced cytopathic effects, with EC50 various from 11.13 to 67.49 mu g.mL(-1). The WEPT's were better than EEPTs, moreover the FPT's water extracts were better than the GTLPT's especially YYP-31 with SI value 42.40. YYP-31 also inhibited HIV-1(RF) and HIV-2(CBL-20) infection with EC50 of 30.82 and 39.79 mu g.mL(-1), respectively. YYP-31 reduced p24 antigen expression in HIV-1(IIIB) acute infected C8166 and in HIV-1(KM018) infected PBMC with EC50 values of 14.95 and 74.63 mu g.mL(-1), respectively. YYP-31 blocked the fusion between normal C8166 cells and HIV-1 chronically infected H9 cells with EC50 values of 234.27 mu g.mL(-1). It exhibits markedly synergistic anti-HIV activity in combination with AZT but can't inhibit activities of reverse transcriptase. CONCLUSION: Pu-erh tea extracts exhibit highly efficient anti-HIV-1 activity and can be considered to be used to as a complementary therapy or a health product to HIV patients.

Nortriterpenoids, sphenadilactone C (1) and sphenasin A (2), together with four known lignans (3-6), were isolated from the leaves and stems of Schisandra sphenanthera. Their structures were elucidated by extensive analysis of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic data and compound 2 was further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 features a partial enol moiety and an acetamide group in its structure. In addition, compounds 1, 3-6 showed weak anti-HIV-1 activity with EC(50) values in the range of 15.5-29.5 microg/mL.

HR212, a recombinant protein expressed in Escherichia coli, has been previously reported to inhibit HIV-1 membrane fusion at low nanomolar level. Here we report that HR212 is effective in blocking laboratory strain HIV-1(IIIB) entry and replication with EC(50) values of 3.92+/-0.62 and 6.59+/-1.74 nM, respectively, and inhibiting infection by clinic isolate HIV-1(KM018) with EC(50) values of 44.44+/-10.20 nM, as well as suppressing HIV-1-induced cytopathic effect with an EC(50) value of 3.04+/-1.20 nM. It also inhibited HIV-2(ROD) and HIV-2(CBL-20) entry and replication in the microM range. Notably, HR212 was highly effective against T20-resistant strains with EC(50) values ranging from 5.09 to 7.75 nM. Unlike T20, HR212 showed stability sufficient to inhibit syncytia formation in a time-of-addition assay, and was insensitive to proteinase K digestion. These results suggest that HR212 has great potential to be further developed as novel HIV-1 fusion inhibitor for treatment of HIV/AIDS patients, particularly for those infected by T20-resistant variants.

Previously, we reported that the petroleum ether fraction, RC-1, and EtOAc fraction, RC-2, of the medicinal plant Rhus chinensis showed potent anti-HIV-1 activities. To address anti-HIV-1 constituents of RC-1 and RC-2, 17 compounds were isolated. Anti-HIV-1 activities and possible action mechanisms of these compounds were investigated.The syncytial formation induced by HIV-1 was determined under the inverted microscope, cellular toxicity and protection assay were assessed by MTT method, reduction of p24 antigen expression level and RT activity were measured by ELISA, and inhibition of recombinant HIV-1 PR was monitored by the fluorescent signal.The compounds 1 and 13 inhibited HIV-1-induced syncytium formation potently with TI value of 42.31 and 19.07, respectively. Compounds 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10 were less potent with TI value of 8.94, 8.22, 4.14, 5.11 and 5.34, respectively. Compound 1, a benzofuranone-type compound, previously reported as a novel anti-HIV-1 agent, might target late-steps of HIV-1 life cycle. Compound 13 inhibited HIV-1 replication with EC(50) of 7.16mug/ml and might target at/before integration step.These compounds might contribute to anti-HIV-1 activities extracts of the medicinal plant Rhus chinensis.

Four novel highly oxygenated trinortriterpenoids, sphenalactones A–D (1–4), were isolated from the leaves and stems of Schisandra sphenanthera and their structures were elucidated by extensive analysis of 1D and 2D NMR data. Compounds 1–4 featured a C27 backbone and showed anti-HIV-1 activity with EC50 values in the range of 35.5–89.1 μg/mL with low cytotoxicity against C8166 cells (CC50 > 200 μg/mL).

A beta-carboline compound, flazin isolated from Suillus granulatus has been shown weak anti-HIV-1 activity. Based on the structure of flazin, flazinamide [1-(5'-hydromethyl-2'-furyl)-beta-carboline-3-carboxamide] was synthesized and its anti-HIV activities were evaluated in the present study. The cytotoxicity of flazinamide was about 4.1-fold lower than that of flazin. Flazinamide potently reduced syncytium formation induced by HIV-1IIIB with EC50 value of 0.38 mu M, the EC50 of flazinamide was about 6.2-fold lower than that of flazin. Flazinamide also inhibited HIV-2ROD and HIV-2CBL-20 infection with EC50 values of 0.57 and 0.89 mu M, respectively. Flazinamide reduced p24 antigen expression in HIV-1IIIB acute infected C8166 and in clinical isolated strain HIV-1KM018 infected PBMC, with EC50 values of 1.45 and 0.77 mu M, respectively. Flazinamide did not suppress HIV-1 replication in chronically infected H9 cells. Flazinamide blocked the fusion between normal cells and HIV-1 or HIV-2 chronically infected cells. It weakly inhibited activities of recombinant HIV-1 reverse transcriptase, protease or integrase at higher concentrations. In conclusion, the conversion of the carboxyl group in 3 position of flazin markedly enhanced the anti-viral activity (TI value increased from 12.1 to 312.2) and flazinamide might interfere in the early stage of HIV life cycle. Rhus chinensis, a species used in folk medicine by Chinese native people, the anti-HIV-1 activities of the petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, butanol and aqueous extract of Rhus chinensis, named as RC-1, RC-2, RC-3 and RC-4, respectively, was evaluated. The petroleum ether extract RC-1 can inhibit the syncytium formation and HIV-1 p24 antigen at non-cytotoxic concentrations, the 50% effective concentration (EC50) were 0.71 and 0.93 microg/ml, respectively. The therapeutic index (TI) was about 100. RC-1 had no activity on inhibiting HIV-1 recombinant RT and HIV-1 entry into host cells. Results showed that RC-1 was effective against HIV-1 and Rhus chinensis would be a useful medicinal plant for the chemotherapy of HIV-1 infection. RC-1 might inhibit the post steps or target the new sites of HIV-1 replication.

A novel protein, named BAS-AH, was purified and characterized from the skin of the toad Bufo andrewsi. BAS-AH is a single chain protein and the apparent molecular weight is about 63 kDa as judged by SDS-PAGE. BAS-AH was determined to bind heme (0.89 mol heme/mol protein) as determined by pyridine haemochrome analysis. Fifty percentage cytotoxic concentration (CC50) of BAS-AH on C8166 cells was 9.5 microM. However, at concentrations that showed little effect on cell viability, BAS-AH displayed dose dependent inhibition on HIV-1 infection and replication. The antiviral selectivity indexes (CC50/EC50) were 14.4 and 11.4, respectively, corresponding to the measurements of syncytium formation and HIV-1 p24 antigen expression. BAS-AH also showed an inhibitory effect on the activity of recombinant HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (IC50 = 1.32 microM). The N-terminal sequence of BAS-AH was determined to be NAKXKADVIGKISILLGQDNLSNIVAAM, which exhibited little identity with other known anti-HIV-1 proteins. BAS-AH is devoid of antibacterial, proteolytic, trypsin inhibitory activity, l-amino acid oxidase activity and catalase activity.

Schilancidilactones A (1) and B (2). two novel tetranortriterpenoids possessing an unprecedented skeleton, have been isolated from the stems of Schisandra lancifolia. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis. The relative configurations of 1 were further determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography.
