14. Effect of pH and ammonia on survival and growth of the early larval stages of Penaeus monodon Fabricius

Abstract

Lethal toxicity tests of ammonia at different pH levels (7, 7.5, 8, and 8.5) and its effect on survival and growth of the early larval stages of Penaeus monodon were determined. An increase in ammonia toxicity when the water pH increased was revealed in 96 h toxicity tests. Estimated LT50 decreased from 101.09 to 25.16 h for protozoea exposed to 8 ppm ammonia, from 115.79 to 11.26 h for mysis exposed to 24 ppm, and from 51.41 to 22.58 h for PL exposed to 52 ppm ammonia with increase in pH levels. The effect of 3 and 6 ppm ammonia levels at pH levels of 7.0, 7.5, 8.0 and 8.5 on the survival and growth of P. monodon larvae and postlarvae was also investigated in a 16-day sublethal toxicity test. Results indicated that ammonia at 3 and 6 ppm affects both survival and growth of shrimp. Survival was decreased by 27% in 3 ppm and by 48% in 6 ppm ammonia, while growth was reduced by 4.4% in 3 ppm and by 6.5% in 6 ppm ammonia. Increasing pH of the rearing water resulted in significantly lower survival in protozoea, mysis, and postlarval stages. No interactive effect of pH and ammonia was detected.

Abstract

The use of live microalgae for food during the early stages of the life cycle of shrimp larvae is considered essential. The microalga Chaetoceros calcitrans was mass produced at the Aquaculture Department of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC/AQD) using the multistep method. The alga was grown in batches using successively larger containers. A cell density of 2.65 × 10 6 cells/ml was obtained from the final 4-day culture of C. calcitrans . Production cost using this method was P715.50/ton (US$ 1.00=25 Philippine pesos). The minimal costs involved in this method make it an affordable technique for the mass culture of microalgae.

Abstract

A survey was conducted among 72 seaweed ( Kappaphycus sp.) farmers in the Western Visayas region, Philippines, from March to July 1990 to assess their culture practices in terms of production and economic efficiency. Yields of 5.8 tons/ha per crop (dry weight) and 7.6 tons/ha per crop (dry weight) were obtained from bottom line and raft monoline methods, respectively. Investment requirement was P27361/ha for bottom line culture, and P56757/ha for raft monoline culture (P25=US$1). The bottom line method was more profitable with net farm income of P33286/ha per crop compared with P26365/ha per crop for the raft monoline method. The bottom line method of culturing seaweed is more cost-efficient compared with the raft monoline method. Production cost averaged P3.32/kg for the former method, and P5.55/kg for the latter method. Return on investment was also higher at 243% for the bottom line method and 93% for raft monoline.

Abstract

In this study, using multilocus microsatellite analysis, we report the genetic characterization of 27 Candida parapsilosis isolates recovered in two different periods of time (2007-2009 and 2011-2012) from infants hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit of a hospital in Messina, Italy. The results revealed the persistence and dominance of a particular infectious genotype among NICU patients and highlight the power of the used microsatellite markers in clarifying epidemiologic associations, detect micro-evolutionary variations and facilitating the recognition of outbreaks. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
