Abstract

This paper calls into question a main assumption of governance research that the success of regional energy transitions depends to a large extent on collaborative governance structures. The role of network-based governance in two regions, Luchow-Dannenberg and Prignitz, is analysed. Alternative ways of understanding the success of energy transitions are discussed with the help of three strands of critical governance literature: debates about ‘socio-materiality’, the often neglected role of power and key individuals. Especially power and the ‘material’ dimension of energy regions may help to explain interregional differences in the success of energy governance.

Abstract

Using data from the HEGRA air shower array, taken in the period from April 1998 to March 2000, upper limits on the ratio Iγ/ICR of the diffuse photon flux Iγ to the hadronic cosmic ray flux ICR are determined for the energy region 20–100 TeV. The analysis uses a gamma–hadron discrimination which is based on differences in the development of photon- and hadron-induced air showers after the shower maximum. A method which is sensitive only to the non-isotropic component of the diffuse photon flux yields an upper limit of Iγ/ICR (at 54 TeV)

Abstract

The determination of partition coefficients is crucial for the biochemical analysis of membrane-based processes, but requires tedious procedures. We have facilitated this analysis using a silica gel coated with a single phospholipid bilayer (TRANSIL) as the membranous phase. We demonstrate the validity of this method using MARCKS-related protein, a 20-kDa member of the MARCKS family (an acronym for myristoylated alanine-rich C kinase substrate). The partition coefficients describing the association of unmyristoylated and myristoylated MARCKS-related protein with membranes of different phospholipid composition are in agreement with previous work with vesicles and show that both the myristoyl moiety and the basic effector domain of MARCKS-related protein mediate the binding. However, no significant cooperativity is observed between these two domains. Interestingly, MARCKS-related protein binds to TRANSIL membranes more strongly at temperatures below their phase-transition temperature. Taking advantage of this property, MARCKS-related protein was purified by phase-transition chromatography, loading Escherichia coli lysates on a TRANSIL column at 4°C and eluting MRP at room temperature. In conclusion, TRANSIL is a versatile tool to determine the affinity of compounds for phospholipid membranes and to purify membrane-bound proteins. TRANSIL should also enable functional studies of protein–ligand and protein–protein interactions at the surface of membranes.

Abstract

Summary Proteins of healthy pea plants ( Pisum sativum L. cv. Nadja) and of plants infected with red clover mottle virus were examined by one- and two-dimensional electrophoresis. Silver-stained 2-D slab gels revealed more than ten additional protein spots with markedly changed intensity in the extracts from infected plants as compared to extracts from uninfected plants. Two of these spots corresponded to virus proteins (about 38 and 21 kDa).

Abstract

The dielectric permittivity of the amorphous system LiCl·7H2O has been determined between 0.3 and 25 K both in the audio (kHz) and microwave (GHz) frequency range. Qualitative agreement is found between experimental results and a theoretical description based on the tunnelling model. However, comparing low and high frequency data, remarkable deviations from the predicted frequency dependence are observed.
