No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2022-01-01 The objective of this study was to identify predictors of 12-mo areal bone density accrual in different body segments, lean soft tissue, and osteogenic characteristics attributed to sports participation among adolescent girls and boys. Adolescents (Girls [n = 64], [aged = 14.7]); Boys [n = 129], [aged = 14.6]) were stratified into three groups according to their engagement in different sports (Control [n = 68], Swimming [n = 25], and Weight-bearing sports [n = 100]). Areal bone density (aBMD [g/cm²]) and lean soft tissue (LST) [kg] were measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA; Lunar DPX-NT; General Electric Healthcare, Little Chalfont, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom). The ground reaction force (GRF) index attributed to sports participation (Sport-GRF) was created considering the GRF attributed to each sport, body weight of the adolescent, and the amount of time spent in sports participation. Osteocalcin levels (ng/mL) were estimated from a venous blood sample. Multiple regression analysis showed that after adjusting for covariates, the models involving sport-GRF, LST (Δ), and osteocalcin explained 15.8% to 76.2% of the aBMD gains. Specifically in girls, OC was only associated with lower limb aBMD accrual. In boys, however, sport ground reaction forces were positively associated with total spine aBMD accrual. Furthermore, the LST (Δ) was positively associated with aBMD accrual in all body sites (β = 0.003 to 0.011) in both sexes. Increases in LST contributed significantly to gains in aBMD accrual in both sexes, being a more important predictor of changes in bone outcomes than ground reaction forces and osteocalcin. The objective of our study was to identify differences in bone mineral density (BMD) according to different sports among adolescents, as well as to identify assessments of relevant mediators. The sample consisted of 429 adolescents with a mean age of 13.3 ± 1.7 yr. The sports modalities that we evaluated were judo, karate, kung fu, swimming, basketball, and soccer. Nonsports group was composed of 111 adolescents. Bone density was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Regarding BMD values, female engaged in karate had higher BMD values than girls from the no sports group (p = 0.01). Boys engaged in soccer and karate presented the highest BMD values than all the other groups (p = 0.01). The most relevant mediators were the body mass index and lean soft tissue for boys and girls. Different sports presented different results regarding BMD gains, which were influenced by body mass index and whole-body lean soft tissue.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2018-06-01 Background and aims: Structured regular exercise programs decrease high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), a marker of low-grade inflammation in adults. Longitudinal effects of self-initiated physical activity levels (PAL) on hsCRP are less clear. This study evaluated the association of longitudinal changes in hsCRP in relation to modifications in PAL, over time, in a large sample of adults. Methods: Participants included 5030 adults, 4045 (80%) males, undergoing routine health screening examinations. Elevated level of hsCRP was defined as ≥3 mg/L. Self-reported PAL, height, weight, blood pressure and blood samples were collected at baseline and after a median of 2.9 years (P25th 1.97 and P75th 4.37 yrs). Participants were stratified according to their PAL at baseline and follow-up as: i) persistently physically inactive; ii) became physically inactive; iii) became physically active; iv) persistently physically active (active both at baseline and follow-up). Results: Persistently physically active participants had lower odds of having higher hsCRP (OR = 0.35 [95% CI: 0.25 to 0.48]). The maintenance of high PAL was associated with lower hsCRP in both sexes (men: OR = 0.44 [0.30 to 0.65] and women: OR = 0.35 [0.16 to 0.76]). Participants with overweight/obesity (OR = 0.43 [95% CI: 0.29 to 0.63]) and smokers (OR = 0.123 [95% CI: 0.03 to 0.60]) who were persistently active had lower odds of having higher hsCRP compared to physically inactive peers. Conclusions: Self-initiated PAL was longitudinally associated with hsCRP in adults. The data suggest that the initiation or maintenance of PA attenuates the low-grade inflammatory state, independent of sex, body weight and smoking status. Introduction: The indiscriminate use of different diagnostic criteria for the definition of dyslipidemia may result in inaccurate interpretations, which could compromise diagnosis and therefore the therapeutic and prophylactic actions to be taken. Objective: To analyze possible differences in prevalence rates of dyslipidemia in adolescents based on three diagnostic definitions. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted of a representative sample of Brazilian adolescents between 11 and 16 years of age. Blood samples were collected from 1000 students (423 boys and 577 girls) to determine fasting total cholesterol (TC), HDL and LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides (TG). Background and objective: Early sport practice prevents development of diseases in children/ adolescents, but still unclear its effect over health in adulthood. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the association between sport practice in early life and chronic diseases in adulthood. Materials and methods: A retrospective population-based survey carried out in eight Brazilian cities with adults of both genders. Throughout a multistage random process 2720 adults (1096 male and 1624 female) were selected and interviewed. Type 2 diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension were assessed in a face-to-face interview through a self-report, which was necessarily based on previous medical diagnosis. Early sport practice was assessed in childhood (7–10 years old) and adolescence (11–17 years old). Current physical activity and body mass index were assessed in adulthood throughout a face-to-face interview. Results: Type 2 diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension were identified in 8.1% (95% CI, 7.1–9.2) and 23.5% (95% CI, 21.9–25.1) of the sample, respectively. Early sport practice during childhood and adolescence was associated with lower occurrence of arterial hypertension (OR, 0.49, 95% CI, 0.33–0.73) and type 2 diabetes (OR, 0.46, 95% CI, 0.24–0.88) in adulthood. Conclusions: Independently of obesity and current physical activity, early sport practice in early life was positively associated with lower occurrence of chronic diseases in adulthood.

SummaryIntroductionSmoking cessation promotes health benefits and, despite cigarette smoking be an important pro inflammatory stimulus, there are few studies concerning the nasal and systemic inflammation; as well as the mucociliary clearance behavior in smokers after short period of smoking cessation.AimTo evaluate the nasal and systemic inflammatory markers and mucociliary clearance behavior after 30 days of cigarette smoking abstinence.MethodsTwenty-five smokers were included and divided into two groups: abstinent smokers (n = 14) and current smokers (n = 11). Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8 and IL-10 were measured on nasal lavage and blood serum samples by ELISA at baseline and after 30 days. MÉTODOS: Participaram da pesquisa 354 trabalhadores (246 homens e 108 mulheres), que foram submetidos a medidas de estatura, massa corporal, circunferência de cintura, aferição da pressão arterial sistólica e diastólica e a testes de preensão manual direita e esquerda, força escapular e lombar. As avaliações ocorreram em três dias nos três períodos, em uma indústria de balas e doces em Rio Claro - SP. As leituras da pressão arterial respeitaram um intervalo de 10 minutos cada, com o indivíduo sentado. Para os testes de força, inicialmente uma familiarização foi proporcionada aos trabalhadores, posteriormente foi registrado o maior valor após duas tentativas de cada teste. RESULTADOS: Os indivíduos hipertensos apresentaram valores superiores significativamente para idade, massa corporal, índice de massa corporal e circunferência de cintura, em comparação aos normotensos. No desempenho em testes de força, os hipertensos não diferiram significativamente dos normotensos, porém, essa diferença foi notada quando comparados grupos divididos pelo índice de massa corporal. O grupo obesidade teve valores superiores ao grupo peso normal/sobrepeso entre normotensos, mas não entre os hipertensos. Já na comparação intragênero, não houve diferenças significativas para os testes de força estática. CONCLUSÃO: Os trabalhadores normotensos e hipertensos não demonstraram diferenças significativas no desempenho de força muscular estática, porém, a massa corporal e gênero parecem afetar a relação entre força muscular e pressão arterial. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare static muscular strength test performance between hypertensive and normotensive workers, considering the hypothesis that hypertensive individuals have lower strength than normotensive individuals. METHODS: The participants consisted of 354 workers (246 men and 108 women) who underwent height, body mass, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP) measurements, as well as right and left handgrip, and scapular and lumbar strength tests. Assessments were performed during three days in all three shifts, with workers from a candy and sweets factory located in Rio Claro, SP, Brazil. BP measurements were performed with a 10-minute interval, with the subject in the sitting position. Before the strength tests were performed, the workers were familiarized with the equipment; the highest value was recorded after two attempts at each test. RESULTS: The results showed significant differences between hypertensive and normotensive individuals for age, body mass, body mass index, and waist circumference greater for hypertensive individuals. Regarding static muscle strength tests performance, the hypertensive individuals did not differ significantly from normotensive individuals; however, this difference was observed when groups divided by body mass index (BMI) were compared. The obesity group had strength values above those of the normal weight/overweight group among normotensive individuals, but this was not observed among the hypertensive individuals. As for the intragender comparison, there were no significant differences for the strength tests. CONCLUSION: Normotensive and hypertensive workers showed no significant differences in the performance of static muscular strength tests; however, body mass and gender seem to affect the association between muscle strength and blood pressure. MÉTODOS: Análise transversal, da qual participaram 888 jovens de ambos os sexos e com idade variando entre 11 e 17 anos. O índice de massa corporal foi calculado por meio dos valores de massa corporal e estatura, e utilizado como indicador do excesso de peso. A atividade física, a ingestão alimentar e a classe socioeconômica (alta e baixa) foram analisadas mediante a aplicação de questionários. Os dados foram analisados estatiscamente por meio dos testes Qui quadrado e regressão logística binária. RESULTADOS: Para os adolescentes de classe socioeconômica baixa, uma inadequada ingestão alimentar (Razão de chance [RC]= 4,59) e o sobrepeso dos pais (RC= 5,33) foram associados à presença do excesso de peso. Entre os adolescentes de classe socioeconômica alta, a escolaridade materna (RC= 0,57), estudar em escola privada (RC= 3,04) e o sobrepeso dos pais (RC= 3,47) foram associados à presença do excesso de peso. CONCLUSÃO: em ambas as classes socioeconômicas, o sobrepeso dos pais foi um importante fator de risco associado ao excesso de peso. Os outros fatores de risco diferiram entre as classes socioeconômicas. BACKGROUND: To analyze the association between risk factors and presence of overweight in adolescents from different socioeconomic levels. METHODS: A cross-section analysis with 888 youths recruited from both genders with ages ranging from 11 to 17 years was carried out. The body mass index was calculated through body mass and height values, and was used as the overweight indicator. Physical activity, food intake, and socioeconomic levels (high and low) were obtained by questionnaires. Data were analyzed by chi-square test and binary logistic regression. RESULTS: For adolescents in the lower socioeconomic level, both inadequate food intake (Odds Ratio [OR]= 4.59) and parent overweight (OR= 5.33) were associated to overweight. Among adolescents in the higher socioeconomic level, maternal education (OR= 0.57), study in private school (OR= 3.04), and parent overweight (OR= 3.47) were associated to development of overweight. CONCLUSION: In both socioeconomic levels, parent overweight was an important risk factor associated with overweight. The other risk factors were different among the socioeconomic levels.
