We use the gluing construction introduced by Jia Huang to explore the rings of invariants for a range of modular representations. We construct generating sets for the rings of invariants of the maximal parabolic subgroups of a finite symplectic group and their common Sylow $p$-subgroup. We also investigate the invariants of singular finite classical groups. We introduce parabolic gluing and use this construction to compute the invariant field of fractions for a range of representations. We use thin gluing to construct faithful representations of semidirect products and to determine the minimum dimension of a faithful representation of the semidirect product of a cyclic $p$-group acting on an elementary abelian $p$-group., Comment: Example 5.12 has been corrected and expanded

Suppose $\mathbb{F}$ is a field of prime characteristic $p$ and $E$ is a finite subgroup of the additive group $(\mathbb{F},+)$. Then $E$ is an elementary abelian $p$-group. We consider two such subgroups, say $E$ and $E'$, to be equivalent if there is an $\alpha\in\mathbb{F}^*:=\mathbb{F}\setminus\{0\}$ such that $E=\alpha E'$. In this paper we show that rational functions can be used to distinguish equivalence classes of subgroups and, for subgroups of prime rank or rank less than twelve, we give explicit finite sets of separating invariants., Comment: There has been a minor change of title from the previous version. Let G be a Sylow p -subgroup of the unitary groups GU(3,q2)GU(3,q2), GU(4,q2)GU(4,q2), the symplectic group Sp(4,q)Sp(4,q) and, for q odd, the orthogonal group O+(4,q)O+(4,q). In this paper we construct a presentation for the invariant ring of G acting on the natural module. In particular we prove that these rings are generated by orbit products of variables and certain invariant polynomials which are images under Steenrod operations, applied to the respective invariant form defining the corresponding classical group. We also show that these generators form a SAGBI basis and the invariant ring for G is a complete intersection.

The notion of commutative integro-differential algebra was introduced for the algebraic study of boundary problems for linear ordinary differential equations. Its noncommutative analog achieves a similar purpose for linear systems of such equations. In both cases, free objects are crucial for analyzing the underlying algebraic structures, e.g. of the (matrix) functions. In this paper we apply the method of Grobner–Shirshov bases to construct the free (noncommutative) integro-differential algebra on a set. The construction is from the free Rota–Baxter algebra on the free differential algebra on the set modulo the differential Rota–Baxter ideal generated by the noncommutative integration by parts formula. In order to obtain a canonical basis for this quotient, we first reduce to the case when the set is finite. Then in order to obtain the monomial order needed for the Composition-Diamond lemma, we consider the free Rota–Baxter algebra on the truncated free differential algebra. A Composition-Diamond lemma is proved in this context, and a Grobner–Shirshov basis is found for the corresponding differential Rota–Baxter ideal.

Protoadditive functors are designed to replace additive functors in a non-abelian setting. Their properties are studied, in particular in relationship with torsion theories, Galois theory, homology and factorisation systems. It is shown how a protoadditive torsion-free reflector induces a chain of derived torsion theories in the categories of higher extensions, similar to the Galois structures of higher central extensions previously considered in semi-abelian homological algebra. Such higher central extensions are also studied, with respect to Birkhoff subcategories whose reflector is protoadditive or, more generally, factors through a protoadditive reflector. In this way we obtain simple descriptions of the non-abelian derived functors of the reflectors via higher Hopf formulae. Various examples are considered in the categories of groups, compact groups, internal groupoids in a semi-abelian category, and other ones.

In this paper, we study the vector invariants, ${\bf{F}}[m V_2]^{C_p}$, of the 2-dimensional indecomposable representation $V_2$ of the cylic group, $C_p$, of order $p$ over a field ${\bf{F}}$ of characteristic $p$. This ring of invariants was first studied by David Richman \cite{richman} who showed that this ring required a generator of degree $m(p-1)$, thus demonstrating that the result of Noether in characteristic 0 (that the ring of invariants of a finite group is always generated in degrees less than or equal to the order of the group) does not extend to the modular case. He also conjectured that a certain set of invariants was a generating set with a proof in the case $p=2$. This conjecture was proved by Campbell and Hughes in \cite{campbell-hughes}. Later, Shank and Wehlau in \cite{cmipg} determined which elements in Richman's generating set were redundant thereby producing a minimal generating set. We give a new proof of the result of Campbell and Hughes, Shank and Wehlau giving a minimal algebra generating set for the ring of invariants ${\bf{F}}[m V_2]^{C_p}$. In fact, our proof does much more. We show that our minimal generating set is also a SAGBI basis for ${\bf{F}}[m V_2]^{C_p}$. Further, our techniques also serve to give an explicit decomposition of ${\bf{F}}[m V_2]$ into a direct sum of indecomposable $C_p$-modules. Finally, noting that our representation of $C_p$ on $V_2$ is as the $p$-Sylow subgroup of $SL_2({\bf F}_p)$, we are able to determine a generating set for the ring of invariants of ${\bf{F}}[m V_2]^{SL_2({\bf F}_p)}$.

We study the permutation module arising from the action of the symmetric group S 2 n on the conjugacy class of fixed-point-free involutions, defined over an arbitrary field. The indecomposable direct summands of these modules are shown to possess filtrations by Specht modules and also filtrations by dual Specht modules. We see that these provide counterexamples to a conjecture by Hemmer. Twisted permutation modules are also considered, as is an application to the Brauer algebra.
