This study presents a description of Bispira riccardi sp. nov., a new habitat-forming sabellid polychaete from the mesophotic NW Mediterranean Sea. Individuals, up to 20 cm long, show a peculiar morphology of radioles, thoracic uncini, companion chaetae and ventral shield of the collar. The phylogenetic position of this new taxon in the genus Bispira has been validated using nuclear (18S rRNA) and mitochondrial (COI) markers. Aggregations of B. riccardi sp. nov. were found by ROV on horizontal muddy bottoms between 56 and 85 m, in areas subjected to high trophic inputs. Patches are fragmented and dense (up to 943 individuals m 2) probably accounting for various hectares. A 5-days continuous monitoring, carried out using an autonomous lander, revealed that the contraction of the branchial crown was positively affected by temperature and current, rapidly responding to meteorological events. The filtering activity and high density of these fields suggest a considerable impact on the pelagic-benthic coupling and the amount of organic matter in the sediments. Indeed, meiofaunal abundance and diversity within the aggregations resulted significantly higher than in outer stations. These findings highlight the undisclosed potential of the deep Mediterranean Sea for sabellid diversity and their importance as habitat-forming species on mesophotic soft bottoms.

Porcine circovirus 2 (PCV-2) infections are among the most economically important in swine farming. Because of the high evolutionary rate of PCV-2, several variants have emerged and are currently classified into several genotypes. However, only three (i.e. PCV-2a, PCV-2b, and PCV-2d) have a worldwide distribution, with other genotypes restricted to certain geographical regions and/or for limited time periods. Underdiagnosis or underreporting of these genotypes cannot be excluded. This is the first report of the detection and genetic characterisation of the PCV-2e genotype in Europe, from sows on a farm in Italy showing no clinical evidence of porcine circovirus disease. A follow-up study demonstrated persistent subclinical evidence of PCV-2e on the farm, at low frequency and viral load. This incidental finding emphasises the need for more intensive routine monitoring activities involving asymptomatic animals, coupled with DNA sequencing and data sharing. Considering the relevant genetic and phenotypic divergence of such genotypes, the actual efficacy of currently applied vaccines and diagnostic assays should be further evaluated.

Neanderthal foot bone proportions and morphology are mostly indistinguishable from those of Homo sapiens, with the exception of several distinct Neanderthal features in the talus. The biomechanical implications of these distinct talar features remain contentious, fueling debate around the adaptive meaning of this distinctiveness. With the aim of clarifying this controversy, we test phylogenetic and behavioral factors as possible contributors, comparing tali of 10 Neanderthals and 81 H. sapiens (Upper Paleolithic and Holocene hunter-gatherers, agriculturalists, and postindustrial group) along with the Clark Howell talus (Omo, Ethiopia). Variation in external talar structures was assessed through geometric morphometric methods, while bone volume fraction and degree of anisotropy were quantified in a subsample (n = 45). Finally, covariation between point clouds of site-specific trabecular variables and surface landmark coordinates was assessed. Our results show that although Neanderthal talar external and internal morphologies were distinct from those of H. sapiens groups, shape did not significantly covary with either bone volume fraction or degree of anisotropy, suggesting limited covariation between external and internal talar structures. Neanderthal external talar morphology reflects ancestral retentions, along with various adaptations to high levels of mobility correlated to their presumably unshod hunter-gatherer lifestyle. This pairs with their high site-specific trabecular bone volume fraction and anisotropy, suggesting intense and consistently oriented locomotor loading, respectively. Relative to H.sapiens, Neanderthals exhibit differences in the talocrural joint that are potentially attributable to cultural and locomotor behavior dissimilarity, a talonavicular joint that mixes ancestral and functional traits, and a derived subtalar joint that suggests a predisposition for a pronated foot during stance phase. Overall, Neanderthal talar variation is attributable to mobility strategy and phylogenesis, while H. sapiens talar variation results from the same factors plus footwear. Our results suggest that greater Neanderthal body mass and/or higher mechanical stress uniquely led to their habitually pronated foot posture.

Summary The aim of this article is to make a precise identification of the factors involved in the evolution of human sexuality. The analyses presented concern mainly the evolution of proximal factors that govern prototypical heterosexual copulation in mammals. The data was collected from a review of the literature concerning the evolution of neurobiological factors of sexual behaviour in mammals. Several studies, in biology, genetics and neurosciences, have shown that some of these factors have changed over the course of evolution. In primates, the olfactory circuits are impaired, sexual activities are dissociated from hormone cycles (reproduction and sexual behavior have become independent one from the other), the lordotic mating reflex is no longer functional and the cortex is highly developed in human beings. For these reasons, the analysis of available data suggests that: (1) the dynamics of sexual behaviour has significantly evolved from the anthropoid primates; (2) the functional dynamic of heterosexual copulation is very probably disorganized; (3) the behavioural dynamics that emerge with the hominidae – from factors that still exist in heterosexual copulation – would seem to be based on a quest for erotic reward, by stimulation of the erogenous zones; and (4) in humans, due to the extensive cognitive development, sexuality is structured by cultural representations.

Background Endogenous lectins are multifunctional effectors in cell physiology. Adding the sixth member of the galectin family in chicken, a model organism for systematic profiling of these adhesion/growth-regulatory proteins, is a step toward comprehensive network monitoring. Methods Database mining and computational data processing are applied for gene detection, chromosomal location and sequence alignments. Cloning, recombinant production and fusion-protein technology gain access to the protein, mass spectrometry and gel electrophoresis/filtration provide analytical data. Haemagglutination, glycan microarray and cell assays assess binding capacity, and crystallography of a shortened variant (also analyzed by ultracentrifugation and small angle X-ray scattering) determines its structure. Results The gene for the galectin-related protein (GRP) is present exclusively in vertebrates with high-level sequence conservation and similar chromosomal positioning. The chicken protein is monomeric and has lost the canonical galectin property of binding lactose. The crystal structure of the variant without the 36-amino-acid extension at the start provides explanations for this lack of binding. Conclusions Chicken GRP is special within this family of six proteins by being unable to bind lactose. The documented high degree of sequence conservation among vertebrate orthologues confers the status of a model for delineating an assumedly shared functionality to this GRP. General significance Biochemical characterization of a product of a gene under strong positive selection is a prerequisite for functional characterization. It is also essential for network monitoring by adding a new member to this lectin family.

Protein import into mitochondria requires a wide variety of proteins, forming complexes in both mitochondrial membranes. The TOM complex (translocase of the outer membrane) is responsible for decoding of targeting signals, translocation of imported proteins across or into the outer membrane, and their subsequent sorting. Thus the TOM complex is regarded as the main gate into mitochondria for imported proteins. Available data indicate that mitochondria of representative organisms from across the major phylogenetic lineages of eukaryotes differ in subunit organization of the TOM complex. The subunit organization of the TOM complex in the Amoebozoa is still elusive, so we decided to investigate its organization in the soil amoeba Acanthamoeba castellanii and the slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum. They represent two major subclades of the Amoebozoa: the Lobosa and Conosa, respectively. Our results confirm the presence of Tom70, Tom40 and Tom7 in the A. castellanii and D. discoideum TOM complex, while the presence of Tom22 and Tom20 is less supported. Interestingly, the Tom proteins display the highest similarity to Opisthokonta cognate proteins, with the exception of Tom40. Thus representatives of two major subclades of the Amoebozoa appear to be similar in organization of the TOM complex, despite differences in their lifestyle.

The mitochondrial carriers are members of a family of transport proteins that mediate solute transport across the inner mitochondrial membrane. Two isoforms of the glutamate carriers, GC1 and GC2 (encoded by the SLC25A22 and SLC25A18 genes, respectively), have been identified in humans. Two independent mutations in SLC25A22 are associated with severe epileptic encephalopathy. In the present study we show that two genes (CG18347 and CG12201) phylogenetically related to the human GC encoding genes are present in the D. melanogaster genome. We have functionally characterized the proteins encoded by CG18347 and CG12201, designated as DmGC1p and DmGC2p respectively, by overexpression in Escherichia coli and reconstitution into liposomes. Their transport properties demonstrate that DmGC1p and DmGC2p both catalyze the transport of glutamate across the inner mitochondrial membrane. Computational approaches have been used in order to highlight residues of DmGC1p and DmGC2p involved in substrate binding. Furthermore, gene expression analysis during development and in various adult tissues reveals that CG18347 is ubiquitously expressed in all examined D. melanogaster tissues, while the expression of CG12201 is strongly testis-biased. Finally, we identified mitochondrial glutamate carrier orthologs in 49 eukaryotic species in order to attempt the reconstruction of the evolutionary history of the glutamate carrier function. Comparison of the exon/intron structure and other key features of the analyzed orthologs suggests that eukaryotic glutamate carrier genes descend from an intron-rich ancestral gene already present in the common ancestor of lineages that diverged as early as bilateria and radiata.

Objective The aim of this work is to analyse the origin of phenotypic plastic changes into a biologic structure, in this case the hip. As a hypothesis of the work, the possibility that changes could be explained following the Lamarckian paradigm, opposed to the Darwinian paradigm, is shown. The section “Material and methods” of this work have been published in part I. Studies in plants and fish have been added. Discussion Results showed that the ball-and-socket design of the hip joint remains unchanged. Phenotype in the elements that form the hip joint tissues showed significant plastic changes. Conclusion Interpretation of our results suggest that changes in phenotype plasticity of the hip joint are immanent to phenotype and cannot be explained by following Lamarck's or Darwin's paradigm.

The enigma of the cholinergic function concerns the role of ChEs and other components of the cholinergic system in non-transmittive, non-synaptic phenomena. The notion that such unorthodox, non-classical phenomena must exist is clearly supported by several lines of evidence, such as the presence of ChEs and other cholinergic components early before neurogenesis, and indeed in unfertilized and fertilized eggs and in the sperm of many species, and their presence throughout phylogenesis, including non-motile, monocellular organisms, fungi and plants and many anervous and ephemeral tissues. The “flexibility” of ChEs, expressed in their polymorphism and their changeability during ontogenesis also speaks for the notion of non-classical functions of ChEs. Today, there is direct evidence that such functions do indeed exist, as for example, the evidence as to the role of ChEs and other cholinergic components in processes of cell proliferation and differentiation of synaptic and myoneural structures. Also, ChEs participate in cell communications as examplified by immunity processes, as well as pathological states, including Alzheimer's disease and states induced by “insults” such as stress and exposure to agents such as antiChEs. Finally, consistent with the non-classical roles of ChEs and cholinergic components are the morphogenetic and teratologic effects of antiChEs, including OP compounds and cholinergic agonists and antagonists. The structural homology between ChEs on the one hand, and adhesion molecules and protohormones on the other may explain some of this phenomenology. It is proposed that the phylogenetic ubiquity of ChEs and their basic capacities that are important for evolutionary phylogenesis, such as the capacity to promote cell adhesion and cell communication speaks for ChEs as “Ur” proteins.

In order to investigate the polymorphism of ?-globin chain of hemoglobin amongst caprines, the linked (I)? and (II)? globin genes of Barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia), goat (Capra hircus), European mouflon (Ovis aries musimon), and Cyprus mouflon (Ovis aries ophion) were completely sequenced, including the 5? and 3? untranslated regions. European and Cyprus mouflons, which do not show polymorphic ? globin chains, had almost identical ? globin genes, whereas Barbary sheep exhibit two different chains encoded by two nonallelic genes. Four different ? genes were observed and sequenced in goat, validating previous observations of the existence of allelic and nonallelic polymorphism. As in other vertebrates, interchromosomal gene conversion appears to be responsible for such polymorphism. Evaluation of nucleotide sequences at the level of molecular evolution of the (I)?-globin gene family in the caprine taxa suggests a closer relationship between the genus Ammotragus and Capra. Molecular clock estimates suggest sheep-mouflon, goat-aoudad, and ancestor-caprine divergences of 2.8, 5.7, and 7.1 MYBP, respectively.

Homoiologies are homoplasies that are caused by nongenetic environmental factors. The homoiology hypothesis predicts that osseous regions subject to repeated biomechanical stress during growth should be more variable and, therefore, less reliable for the reconstruction of phylogeny compared with osseous regions relatively unaffected by stress. Previous studies based on the analysis of multiple primate species found that regions of the cranium subject to masticatory-induced stress were significantly more variable than non-masticatory regions, as predicted by the homoiology hypothesis. However, these studies also found that the masticatory regions were no less reliable for reconstructing primate phylogenetic relationships when subjected to parsimony analysis. It was suggested, therefore, that homoiology may be a more potent problem for the reconstruction of phylogeny at the intraspecific level rather than interspecific phylogenetics. This suggestion was tested here using matched molecular and craniometric data for 12 modern human populations. The results show that, as predicted by the homoiology hypothesis, regions of the human cranium related to mastication were more variable than non-masticatory regions. However, masticatory regions were no less reliable for inferring human population history. Therefore, the results match those found from the interspecific analysis of primate species and do not support the suggestion that homoiology is a greater problem for the analysis of intraspecific taxa. The results also suggest that within-taxon variability cannot be relied upon to predict the phylogenetic efficacy of morphometric characters.

Phylogenetic analysis was performed on the sequences of 44 Polish isolates of equine arteritis virus that were isolated from the semen of stallions from national and private studs, collected during 2001--2005. These sequences were also compared with 41 reference strains previously described and commonly used in phylogenesis. On the basis of the nucleotide sequence analysis of the ORF5 gene, encoding the glycoprotein GP5, it was demonstrated that the Polish EAV isolates belonged to two subgroups and showed the closest relationship to the European strains. Similar results were obtained using the nucleotide sequences of the ORF7 gene. The nucleotide identity between the ORF5 and ORF7 sequences of all Polish isolates was in the range of 80.1-99.0% and 93.6-100%, respectively. The analysis of genetic diversity within the ORF5 sequences enabled a retrospective epizootic investigation. This study suggested that some of the EAV shedding stallions were probably infected before they were moved to Poland.

Discrete dental traits are used as proxies for biological relatedness among modern human populations and for alpha taxonomy and phylogeny reconstruction within the hominin clade. We present a comparison of the expression of lower molar dental traits (cusp 6, cusp 7, trigonid crest pattern, and protostylid) at the enamel-dentine junction (EDJ) in a variety of extant and fossil hominoid taxa, in order to assess the contribution of the EDJ to the morphology of these traits at the outer enamel surface (OES). Molars (n=44) were imaged nondestructively using high-resolution microCT, and three-dimensional surface models of the EDJ and OES were created to compare trait expression at each surface. Our results indicate that these dental traits originate at the EDJ, and that the EDJ is primarily responsible for their degree of expression at the OES. Importantly, variable trait morphology at the EDJ (often not easily recognizable at the OES) indicates that different developmental processes can produce traits that appear similar at the enamel surface, suggesting caution in intra- and intertaxonomic comparisons. The results also highlight the importance of the EDJ for understanding the morphological development of discrete traits, and for establishing graded scales of variation to compare trait frequency among groups for the purpose of taxonomic and/or phylogenetic analysis. Finally, this study demonstrates that imaging the EDJ of both worn and unworn fossil hominin teeth provides a novel source of information about tooth development and variation in crown morphology.

The partial PrP gene sequence and the deduced protein of eight cetacean species, seven of which have never been reported so far, have been determined in order to extend knowledge of sequence variability of the PrP genes in different species and to aid in speculation on cetacean susceptibility to prions. Both the nucleotide and the deduced amino acid sequences have been analysed in comparison with some of the known mammalian PrPs. Cetacean PrPs present typical features of eutherian PrPs. The PrP gene from the species of the family Delphinidae gave identical nucleic acid sequences, while differences in the PrP gene were found in Balaenopteridae and Ziphidae. The phylogenetic tree resulting from analysis of the cetacean PrP gene sequences, together with reported sequences of some ungulates, carnivores and primates, showed that the PrP gene phylogenesis mirrors the species phylogenesis. The PrP gene of cetaceans is very close to species where natural forms of TSEs are known. From an analysis of the sequences and the phylogenesis of the PrP gene, susceptibility to or occurrence of prion diseases in cetaceans can not be excluded.

Phylogenetic knowledge of the genus Mycobacterium is based on comparative analysis of their genetic sequences. The 16S rRNA has remained for many years the only target of such analyses, but in the last few years, other housekeeping genes have been investigated and the phylogeny based on their concatenated sequences become a standard. It is now clear that the robustness of the phylogenetic analysis is strictly related to the size of the genomic target used. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) is nowadays becoming widely accessible and comparatively cheap. It was decided, therefore, to use this approach to reconstruct the ultimate phylogeny of the genus Mycobacterium . Over 50 types of strains of the same number of species of Mycobacterium were sequenced using the Illumina HiSeq platform. The majority of the strains of which the whole sequence was already available in GenBank were excluded from this panel with the aim of maximizing the number of the species with genome available. Following assembling and annotation with proper software, the phylogenetic analysis was conducted with PhyloPhlAn and the pan-genome analysis pipeline. The phylogenetic three which emerged was characterized by a clear-cut distinction of slowly and rapidly growing species with the latter being more ancestral. The species of the Mycobacterium terrae complex occupied an intermediate position between rapid and slow growers. Most of the species revealed clearly related and occupied specific phylogenetic branches. Thanks to the WGS technology, the genus Mycobacterium is finally approaching its definitive location.

For the first time fish RNases have been isolated and characterized. Their functional and structural properties indicate that they belong to the RNase A superfamily (or tetrapod RNase superfamily), now more appropriately described as the vertebrate RNase superfamily. Our findings suggest why previously repeated efforts to isolate RNases from fish tissues have met with no success; fish RNases have a very low ribonucleolytic activity, and their genes have a low sequence identity with those of mammalian RNases. The investigated RNases are from the bony fish Danio rerio (or zebrafish). Their cDNAs have been cloned and expressed, and the three recombinant proteins have been purified to homogeneity. Their characterization has revealed that they have indeed a very low RNA-degrading activity, when compared with that of RNase A, the superfamily prototype, but comparable with that of mammalian angiogenins; that two of them have angiogenic activity that is inhibited by the cytosolic RNase inhibitor. These data and a phylogenetic analysis indicate that angiogenic fish RNases are the earliest diverging members of the vertebrate superfamily, suggesting that ribonucleases with angiogenic activity were the ancestors of all ribonucleases in the superfamily. They later evolved into both mammalian angiogenins and, through a successful phylogenesis, RNases endowed with digestive features or with diverse bioactivities. © 2006 by The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc.

This paper presents an overview on the epithalamus of vertebrates, with particular reference to the pineal and to the asymmetrical organization of the habenular nuclei in lower vertebrates. The relationship between the pineal and the habenulae in the course of phylogenesis is here emphasized, taking data in the frog as example. Altogether the data support the hypothesis, put forward also in earlier studies, of a correlation of habenular asymmetry in lower vertebrates with phylogenetic modification of the pineal complex. The present re-visitation was also stimulated by recent data on the asymmetrical expression of Nodal genes, which involves the pineal and habenular structures in zebrafish. The comparative analysis of data, from cyclostomes to mammals, suggests that transformation of epithalamic structures may play an important role in brain evolution. In addition, in mammals, including rodents, a remarkable complexity has evolved in the organization of the habenulae and their functional interactions with the pineal gland. The evolution of these two epithalamic structures seems to open also new perspectives of knowledge on their implication in the regulation of biological rhythms.

The phylogenesis and pathogenesis of ten Chinese Listeria monocytogenes isolates of clinical (n = 2) and food (n = 8) origin have been investigated in this study. The 597 bp nucleotide sequence at 3′ terminal of actA gene of these L. monocytogenes isolates were amplified and sequenced. Compared with those of published sequences of the corresponding region within the same gene, the phylogenetic tree was constructed using MEGA2.1 software. It was shown that one clinical strain 1579 and food strains YZ5, YZ7, YZ8 belong to lineage I, while the other clinical strain 1191, and food strains YZ1, YZ2, YZ3, YZ4, YZ6 belong to lineage II. The virulence of these strains based on experimental infection model of SPF chick embryos were determined, and compared between L. monocytogenes isolates of two lineages and their hemolytic activity was assessed according to the development of zones of hemolysis around the colonies. Isolates of lineage I showed high virulence while isolates of lineage II (except clinical isolates 1191) exhibited low virulence, since 100% mortality rate and relative short time to death for embryos were observed for strains of lineage I, while 20–30% mortality rate and long time to death for embryos were observed for isolates of lineage II. Hyper-virulent isolate 1579, YZ8 and lower-virulent isolates YZ2, YZ3, YZ4 and YZ6 show strong hemolytic activity while hyper-virulent isolate 1191, YZ5, YZ7 and lower-virulent isolate YZ1 show weak hemolytic activity. The discrepancy between virulence and hemolytic activity indicates that L. monocytogenes hemolytic activity is not directly proportional to their virulence and thus it can not be used as a reliable criteria for assessment of the virulence of L. monocytogenes.

The debate on the evolution of culture has focused on two processes in particular, phylogenesis and ethnogenesis. Recently, it has been suggested that the latter has probably always been more significant than the former. This proposal was assessed by applying cladistic methods of phylogenetic reconstruction to a data set comprising decorative characters from textiles produced by Turkmen tribes since the 18th century. The analyses focused on two periods in Turkmen history: the era in which most Turkmen practised nomadic pastoralism and were organised according to indigenous structures of affiliation and leadership; and the period following their defeat by Tsarist Russia in 1881, which is associated with the sedentarisation of nomadic Turkmen and their increasing dependence on the market. The results indicate that phylogenesis was the dominant process in the evolution of Turkmen carpet designs prior to the annexation of their territories, accounting for c.70% of the resemblances among the woven assemblages. The analyses also show that phylogenesis was the dominant process after 1881, although ethnogenesis accounted for an additional 10% of the resemblances among the assemblages. These results do not support the proposition that ethnogenesis has always been a more significant process in cultural evolution than phylogenesis.

Found in Chiapas (South-East of Mexico), Praealveolina michaudi nov. sp. and Chubbina jamaicensis (of Campanian-Maestrichtian age) are described, both evolved from Nummoloculina sp. while Raadshoovenia guatemalensis (upper Paleocene-lower Eocene) arises from Quinqueloculina. We precisely analyze and modelize the nepionic coiling during the evolutionary change from Miliolacea to Alveolinacea. During ontogenesis as well as during phylogenesis, quinqueloculine coiling progresses to streptospiral and then to planispiral chamber arrangement with the increase of volume of embryo and of chambers. Appearance of these large foraminifers are understood as a consequence of the rise of K-strategies in their mode of life, following the development of photosynthetic symbioses.

1. 1.|The effect of temperature on kinetic characteristics of enzymes providing membrane digestion in 15 species of freshwater teleosts has been studied. 2. 2.|As a rule, temperature characteristics of various enzymes of one fish species are different, the same kind of enzymes of different species of fish are more similar. 3. 3.|In a number of cases there have been found differences in kinetic characteristics associated with peculiarities of species phylogenesis. These peculiarities are common to fish of one ecological group or faunistic complex. 4. 4.|In a number of cases the observed rearrangements are characterized by a pronounced adaptation. 5. 5.|Various components of enzyme-membrane complexes, including the lipid matrix of membranes and hydrophobic domains of enzymes, take part in the realization of temperature adaptations.

A theory is presented here in the attempt to explain why Alzheimer's disease (AD) primarily affects areas of the human brain that have been acquired recently in phylogenesis. Disturbances in cytoskeletal function are proposed to play a fundamental role in triggering the sequence of pathologic events leading to the occurrence of AD-related histopathological markers and to the degeneration and death of neurons. These deficits are supposed to occur more likely in neuronal populations that possess a high degree of plasticity, the substrate of memory functions, and that constitute, in fact, the phylogenetically new telencephalic regions of the human brain.

1. 1. The amount of C-banded heterochromatin has been compared with various DNA fractions, determined by means of reassociation kinetics, in four lacertid species. 2. 2. A clear correlation was found between the amount of constitutive heterochromatin and that of highly repetitive and foldback DNA. 3. 3. There is evidence for the presence of “satellite”-like repetitive DNA in the C-bands of the species studied. 4. 4. There appeared to be a relationship between the variations in repetitive DNA and in heterochromatin and the phylogenesis of lacertids. 5. 5. The most ancient species showed less heterochromatin and a more heterogeneous DNA, while the more recent species had more heterochromatin and a greater amount of highly repetitive DNA.

Three often loosely used terms — communication, language, and speech — are distinguished and discussed, in that order of their evolutionary sequence. Communication (more technically, “semiosis”) criterially characterizes all living entities, from solitary cells to entire organisms, including humans (as well as some of their inorganic products, such as automata). Language appeared much later, a little more than two million years ago. It is an exclusive trait characteristic of all normal members in all the species of the genus Homo, first evident in habilis, then erectus, then sapiens. In respect to its historical genesis, the function of language was not communicative, but is assumed to have been a biological adaptation for modeling the Umwelt of our hominid ancestors. Its great success in phylogenesis is due to its syntactic component, which enables people to operate not only in the “real” world, but also with “possible” worlds. Over a period of some two million years more, language acquired a secondary function (was “exapted”) for communication in the utilitarian form we currently possess and call speech; the mutual fine-tuning of man's encoding capacity to his decoding capacity is still progressing.

It has been suggested that cholinergic receptors in insects are neither nicotinic nor muscarinic but of a mixed nature, and hence differ from ‘classic' vertebrate receptors. However, recent evidence indicates that insects also contain distinct nicotinic and muscarinic binding-sites with properties resembling those of vertebrate receptors. The study of these macromolecules sheds light on the phylogenesis of cholinergic systems and may offer new possibilities for biochemical, genetic and toxicologic research.

The creation of the universe, the origin of life, and the rise of the one celled organism to man are reviewed. The embryologic development of man recapitulates the entire phylogenesis. The evolution of the sense organs (ear and nose) and food and airway passages is discussed in detail. Finally, observations are made regarding phylogenetic development and its relation to human congenital malformations and other pathologic processes.

On the basis of the literary data the relative probabilities of the point mutations are evaluated in the proteins and in RNA's. The relative probabilities of the nonsense mutations are estimated. The probability of the nonsense mutation of the codon UGG (Trp) is especially high. The notion of the value of information is introduced as the measure of the irreplaceability of an element of a message. Using the data on replaceabilities of the amino-acidic residues the tentative values of information of the codons and of the amino-acidic residues are determined. The value, i.e. the irreplaceability of the information increases in the course of biological development. The increase of the summary value of the protein chain of cytochrome c in phylogenesis is shown. The increase of the value of information correlates with the increase of the entropy of a protein chain.

1. 1. Structural glycoproteins were isolated from two species of horny sponges and partially characterized. Their amino acid and carbohydrate compositions are similar to those of structural glycoproteins isolated from other invertebrate and some vertebrate connective tissues. 2. 2. Immunological crossreactions were obtained between sponge urea extracts (structural glycoprotein preparation) and rabbit antisera to structural glycoproteins of vertebrate connective tissues and especially calf cornea and pig aorta. 3. 3. These results suggest a strong conservation of composition and conformation of structural glycoproteins throughout phylogenesis.

Morphology is not a simple description of anatomical forms, but their interpretation from the standpoint of the dynamics of their phylogenesis. It attempts to draw a detailed basic architectural plan of a taxon (e.g. class). This can be achieved through an extremely accurate study of all the external and internal anatomical components, how they function, in comparison with the architecture of the most primitive representatives of the taxon, and through the determination of homologies. The above mentioned basic architectural plan is indispensable for interpreting the forms and structures of the higher representatives of the taxon. The results obtained in this way, and the critical study of descriptive and experimental embryological data enable the morphologist to reconstruct the phylogenesic origin of the basic plan, its evolution within the taxon studied.

Within the framework of a generalized theory, biological evolution is seen as a deterministic process accompanied by an increase of information content easily noticed in phylogenesis. Therefore what is of interest for the biologist is the understanding of species transformation under the influence of an evolving environment. The structure of an organism is the expression of the molecular order deriving from a synchronous molecular epigenesis itself dictated by the order of DNA molecules. It is not anymore as evident that natural selection is the only force inducing the subtle optimization explaining the adequacy of the organism-environment. Constraints from the environment powerfully shape metabolic sequences thus explaining the large diversity of the biological systems that are nonetheless the expression of the subtending molecular order.

The study of the general structure of macroglobulins and 7S (IgG) immunoglobulins of frog and tortoise by relaxation methods shows the rotational correlation time of 7S immunoglobulins to be 67–68 nsec whereas that of macroglobulins of frog is 135 nsec and of tortoise is 103 nsec. Experimental values of rotational correlation time for 7S immunoglobulins are close to those calculated for the model of this molecule approximated by the rigid rotational ellipsoid and lower than those estimated for macroglobulins. This indicates that frog and tortoise 7S immunoglobulins have a fairly compact general structure with no marked intramolecular rotational freedom for high-molecular fragments, whereas macroglobulins possess it to a limited extent. It is seen from our evidence on the rigidity of 7S immunoglobulins and the limited flexibility of macroglobulins in amphibia and reptiles, as compared to previous data on the limited flexibility of carp macroglobulins and on the pronounced flexibility of IgG and IgM of mammals, that the general structure becomes more flexible on passing from lower vertebrates to representatives of a more recent class of mammals. The reported increased flexibility of immunoglobulins accompanied by the progressive evolution of species is likely to provide one of the first indications of the possible directed selection in the course of molecular evolution.

The molecular basis of species differences of ageing rate life spans can be partly connected with different tolerance of unique and repeated genetic information to the random mutational and deteriorative factors and accordingly with the species variances in the pattern of unique and repeated nucleotide sequences in DNA. Ageing is considered as the prevailing loss of unique, non-repeated information at the genomic, transcriptional and translational levels. The repetition of DNA nucleotide sequences in genomes of eukariotes suggested to be not only the reserve of evolution and a form of increasing of functional expression of genetic information, but also as a form of protection of this information from random molecular alterations, accumulating in ontogenesis and phylogenesis. From this point of view the life span possibilities of differentiated cell must increase in correlation with evolutionary decrease of ratio between the number of non-repeated and repeated genes within derepressed and responsible for specialized functions part of the genome.

1. 1. A tendency for a gradual increase of the total amount of liver acid-soluble nucleotides during phylogenesis of vertebrates was observed. 2. 2. The rise in the total amount of nucleotides was due to the increased quantity of adenine, uridine and guanosine nucleotides as well as of NAD and NADP. 3. 3. [ 32 ]P-phosphate incorporation in vivo into acid-soluble nucleotides was many times higher in the liver of homoiothermic animals than in that of poikilothermic animals. 4. 4. The labelling of liver acid-soluble nucleotides of chickens and pigeons was larger compared with that of rats and guinea-pigs.

1. 1. Comparative studies on binding of rabbit serum (IgG) antibodies against intact and insulin-pretreated Tetrahymena cells revealed an increased binding affinity of the latter to rat hepatocellular insulin receptors. 2. 2. The experiments demonstrate that presence of insulin is a prerequisite to the formation of Tetrahymena's hormone receptors, which seems to differ little if at all between species representing different levels of phylogenesis.
