- Abstract
In this work, a Ti-doped alumina (Ti-¿Al2O3) xerogel (TAX) was synthesized from Al powder as a cost-effective precursor. Full physical, chemical, structural, and electrochemical characterization of the prepared materials were performed. It was shown that as-made Ti-¿Al2O3 is a mesoporous nanomaterial with high specific surface area, uniform morphology, the existence of polyhedral coordinated Al3+ ions, many acidity active sites, high light absorption efficiency, and effective bandgap energy. These features made it an efficient photocatalyst for water photocatalytic treatment. In the photocatalytic process with the TAX as the catalyst irradiated by the ultraviolet A photons, around 97% of 10 mg/L Remdesivir (RDV) was degraded within 30 min (pH = 7, TAX = 100 mg/L), and elucidation of the degradation pathway was achieved; low adsorption and minimal contribution was found in the otherwise HO¿-dominated photocatalytic process, as suggested by the scavenger tests. The Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectroscopy validated the proposed species (but not 1O2), while the RDV degradation pathway towards mineralization was proposed by Liquid Chromatography¿Mass Spectrometry analysis. Besides, concerning its applicability, the effect of operational parameters (pH, [TAX], [RDV], water matrix) was scrutinized and validated a notable performance over several consecutive reused cycles. Finally, almost 6.5 log E. coli inactivation was attained (in mild conditions), all indicating the high photocatalytic potential of this material.

Objectives This study aims to estimate the prevalence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the general population of Iran. Methods The target population was all Iranian people aged 6 years and older in the country. A stratified random sampling design was used to select 28 314 people from among the individuals registered in the electronic health record systems used in primary health care in Iran. Venous blood was taken from each participant and tested for the IgG antibody against COVID-19. The prevalence of COVID-19 was estimated at provincial and national levels after adjusting for the measurement error of the laboratory test, non-response bias and sampling design. Results Of the 28 314 Iranians selected, 11 256 (39.75%) participated in the study. Of these, 5406 (48.0%) were male and 6851 (60.9%) lived in urban areas. The mean (standard deviation) participant age was 35.89 (18.61) years. The adjusted prevalence of COVID-19 until 20 August 2020 was estimated as 14.2% (95% uncertainty interval 13.3%–15.2%), which was equal to 11 958 346 (95% CI 11 211 011–12 746 776) individuals. The adjusted prevalences of infection were 14.6%, 13.8%, 16.6%, 11.7% and 19.4% among men, women, urban population, rural population and individuals aged 60 years or more, respectively. Ardabil, Golestan and Khuzestan provinces had the highest prevalence and Alborz, Hormozgan and Kerman provinces had the lowest. Conclusions Based on the study results, a large proportion of the Iranian population had not yet been infected by COVID-19. The observance of hygienic principles and social restrictions should therefore continue until the majority of the population has been vaccinated.

Through this work, a family of sulfonamide functionalized mesoporous materials as sustainable heterogeneous catalysts has been successfully synthesized by employing sulfaguanidine, sulfathiazole, and sulfadiazine. The samples were fully characterized using a multitechnique approach. Such materials have proved to be highly versatile and catalytically active in both the advances in the hydrogenation of Levulinic acid through heterogeneous catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) and oxidation reactions with a strong emphasis on discussing morphology and structure of versatile catalysts, plausible mechanism, and performance of the catalysts for biomass valorization of renewable feedstock. In particular, the prepared catalytic systems were tested in levulinic acid transformation into γ-Valerolactone, achieving a maximum conversion of 99% and a selectivity of 90% for the sulfaguanidine modified sample. The three nanocatalysts displayed good stability over four reuse cycles, and by considering the results of a hot filtration test, it is confirmed that the nature of the catalysis is heterogeneous as acid-base pairs and functionalized groups on catalytic activation of C–H and C O bonds for transfer hydrogenation of levulinic acid. Moreover, such samples also showed remarkable results in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol towards benzaldehyde, with conversion and selectivity values of 95% and 97%, respectively. The obtained catalytic results are highly promising for biomass upgrading processes, looking forward to a more sustainable future.

Background We aimed to report, for the first time, the results of the Iranian National Population-based Cancer Registry (INPCR) for the year 2014. Methods Total population of Iran in 2014 was 76,639,000. The INPCR covered 30 out of 31 provinces (98% of total population). It registered only cases diagnosed with malignant new primary tumors. The main sources for data collection included pathology center, hospitals as well as death registries. Quality assessment and analysis of data were performed by CanReg-5 software. Age standardized incidence rates (ASR) (per 100,000) were reported at national and subnational levels. Results Overall, 112,131 new cancer cases were registered in INPCR in 2014, of which 60,469 (53.9%) were male. The diagnosis of cancer was made by microscopic confirmation in 76,568 cases (68.28%). The ASRs of all cancers were 177.44 and 141.18 in male and female, respectively. Cancers of the stomach (ASR = 21.24), prostate (18.41) and colorectum (16.57) were the most common cancers in men and the top three cancers in women were malignancies of breast (34.53), colorectum (11.86) and stomach (9.44). The ASR of cervix uteri cancer in women was 1.78. Our findings suggested high incidence of cancers of the esophagus, stomach and lung in North/ North West of Iran. Conclusion Our results showed that Iran is a medium-risk area for incidence of cancers. We found differences in the most common cancers in Iran comparing to those reported for the World. Our results also suggested geographical diversities in incidence rates of cancers in different subdivisions of Iran.

Keratin was extracted from different segments of disposable waste chicken feathers (CF) including the whole feathers, calamus/rachis (β-sheet) and barbs/barbules (α-helix), using sodium sulfide and l -cysteine. The yield of extracted keratin from sodium sulfide and l -cysteine was ˜88% and ˜66% respectively. The mass ratio of feathers to reducing agent was 1:20 and the reaction temperature was 40 °C for 6 h. Concentration of keratin extracted by each method was measured using the Bradford assay. The protein extracted from each feather section was characterised using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, vibrational spectroscopy including FTIR and Raman, nuclear magnetic resonance, and thermogravimetry. These results confirmed the keratin structures after each extraction methods. The study showed that α-helix and s-sheet based keratin could be extracted from CF using sodium sulfide and l -cysteine with high yields. This is the first report of CF keratin extraction using l -cysteine.

As the world is increasingly urbanized and climate change presents new uncertainties, urban water supply management needs to be flexible and adaptable. This includes reaching beyond city limits to include water supply and watershed management, as well as working with stakeholders outside the boundaries of the city, across the urban/rural divide. Bringing together diverse stakeholders to collaborate on management strategies entails bringing together multiple knowledge systems that interact, compete, and reshape water systems. Large cities located within Peru’s arid coast provide important opportunities to examine these knowledge dynamics, as urban water supplies depend on actions within the rural watersheds. These watersheds, which originate high in the Andes mountains, are populated primarily by campesino communities, who have been marginalized from state-led water governance for centuries. With Peru’s adoption of the 2009 Water Resources Law, campesino communities were brought into management through multi-stakeholder river basin councils. These councils ideally provide a space for stakeholders to deliberate and reach agreements on sustainable water management. Yet, despite the critical importance of upper watershed protection for ensuring water supplies for the large coastal cities, few efforts have resulted in watershed protection. Here, I examine one successful case, where the stakeholders in Piura agreed on a program to protect critical upper basin ecosystems. This study uses a process tracing approach to analyze the knowledge dynamics that led to the agreement and initial implementation. Based on ethnographic research including 112 interviews between 2015 and 2017, I argue that the interaction between knowledge and belief systems needs to be taken into account. I find that stakeholders’ seemingly incongruent worldviews and epistemologies were bridged, enabling them to reach agreement on an ecosystem-based technique for watershed protection. Further, strong leadership and active support of the knowledge and preferences of the historically-marginalized campesino communities was critical for the inclusion of their views and agreement upon watershed protection. Where urban water supplies rest on actions of non-state actors, such as is the case with watershed protection, the ability of stakeholders to voluntarily reach and implement agreements is critical, especially given increased variability and uncertainties associated with climate change.

Rapid population growth during the past decades has created a demand for clean energies as replacement for fossil fuels. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the ability of oleaginous fungus as a valuable feedstock in biodiesels production. Isolate ADH17 was selected as the most potent fungal isolate among 108 fungal isolates based on selective staining and lipid production. This isolate was identified as Sarocladium kiliense ADH17. Optimization of growth and lipid production using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) revealed that the highest lipid production could be obtained by 7 days incubation, initial pH of 5.5, 5.16% v/v glycerol and 1.3% w/v glucose concentrations. Optimization process resulted in 45 and 30% increase in growth and lipid production, respectively. Analysis of the extracted lipids showed that oleic (C18:1) (51%) and palmitic acids (C16:0) (35%) were dominant fatty acids. The prediction software showed that cetane number (58) and other parameters of the produced biodiesel met the European standard for biodiesel (EN 14214) requirements. Results from this study showed that S. kiliense ADH17 produced high amount of desirable fatty acids and since the obtained biodiesel met the required standards, this fungus is a promising species for biodiesel production.

A mechanochemical protocol was applied to the synthesis of a magnetic material based on iron oxide nanoparticles and Al-SBA-15. Full characterization of the prepared Fe2O3/Al-SBA-15 evidenced the effective functionalization of the aluminosilicate surface. Particularly, TEM analysis revealed that the mechanochemical protocol did not considerable affect the hexagonal ordered structure of Al-SBA-15. DRIFT experiments of Fe2O3/Al-SBA-15 showed interesting acidic properties, which can be further associated to a good catalytic performance. The catalytic behavior of the prepared material was tested in the oxidation of vanillyl alcohol to vanillin, displaying an excellent activity and selectivity. The material resulted to be highly stable in the aforementioned reaction, without considerable decrease of conversion after 10 reuse cycles.

Contamination of soil by a mixture of organic and non-organic pollutants due to various anthropogenic and natural causes is one of the most important issues in soil pollution. Generating a single layer of soil is a time-consuming process, and soil is a significant part of the environmental cycle; thus, protection and remediation of soil are of paramount importance. In this study, phenanthrene (PHE) as a representative for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and nickel (Ni) as heavy metal pollutants were used because of their synergistic effects and abundant presence in soil. Soils with three different organic matter levels (OM0, OM1, and OM2) were prepared, spiked with pollutants, placed in electrokinetic cells, and remediated for 15 days. To improve the remediation process and increase the efficacy of pollutant removal, pH control methods and extracting agents were used. Two non-ionic surfactants, Tween 80 and Brij 35, and one chelating agent, EDTA, were utilized for this purpose. A total of nine tests were performed. The soil was divided into five equal sections at the end of each test, and the pH and concentration of pollutants were analyzed. Results indicated that the highest removal percentage of PHE was accomplished by Brij 35 (61%) in OM0. Increasing organic matter resulted in decreasing PHE removal. In this regard, Tween 80 showed enhanced performance. The order of removal of heavy metals was zinc > nickel > lead, and zinc had the highest removal rate of 61%.

With the current focus on energy and the environment, efficient integration of renewable energies, especially solar energy into power systems, is becoming indispensable. Moreover, to fully capture solar potentials and to recognize the unique characteristics associated with solar energy in power systems reliability assessment, a profound investigation is needed. Accordingly, this paper attempts to establish a comprehensive analytical approach for modeling the reliability of a hybrid system (Photovoltaic (PV) system with Energy Storage System (ESS)). To this end, the output of the PV system is modeled by a multi-state model, and the ESS system is modeled as a two-state Markov model. Moreover, the failure of the hybrid system’s components is considered by using the Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) method. It then continues with the integration of the PV and ESS system model and the model associated with the failure of their components, thereby allowing the hybrid system to be represented as a multi-state model in analytical studies. Also, the conditional probability approach is used and related indices have been extracted. Finally, a discussion of a methodology for optimal hybrid system allocation and sizing in distribution systems, to minimize the electrical network losses and to guarantee acceptable reliability level and voltage profile is presented. The results obtained from the implementation of the case study, validate the major features of the proposed analytical model along with optimal placement of the hybrid system more efficiently.
