We present the case of a 3-year-old male child with an epibulbar bone choristoma. The patient presented with a hard consistency subconjunctival mass of 8×10mm in the superior-temporal quadrant of his right eye along with vascularisation and a long cilium of approximately 8 to 10mm that touched the corneal surface. The histopathology study showed the presence of trabeculae of mature, compact bone surrounded by fibrous tissue, as well as Havers channels with concentric rings of laminar bone without bone marrow, and with normal osteocytes which defined the diagnosis of epibulbar bone choristoma. Osseous choristoma is the rarest type of the ocular choristoma and should be considered as a differential diagnosis among paediatric epibulbar tumours.

Purpose To present the case of a 12-year-old female with an epibulbar osseous choristoma. Observations The patient presented with right-sided conjunctival mass, which caused her discomfort. Slit lamp examination revealed a 5×5-mm, firm nodule in the superotemporal quadrant of the bulbar conjunctiva. The nodule had feeder vessels, adhered firmly to the sclera, and lacked signs of malignancy. The patient underwent excisional biopsy under general anesthesia. During this procedure, great care was taken to avoid perforation of the globe. The pathologic sections were significant for well-circumscribed osseous tissue without atypia. Conclusions and importance We describe diagnosis and successful surgical management of osseous choristoma the rarest subtype of ocular choristoma. With only 65 cases reported since mid-19th century, the condition remains poorly described. This report provides additional information on diagnosis and treatment of this rare condition.

Osseous choristomas are rare benign lesions, characterized by ectopic bone formation in the soft tissue. It affects women, occurs preferentially in the tongue, presenting as a solid nodule, sessile or pediculate, smooth with asymptomatic surface. Microscopically it shows the presence of lamellar bone. Treatment is surgical excision, with no recurrence expected. A clinical case of osseous choristoma will be reported, including its main characteristics and the importance of its knowledge in the clinical routine. A 26-year-old female patient attended the stomatology service because of an asymptomatic nodule in her tongue perceived during oral hygiene with a 3-week course. In the intraoral clinical examination, the presence of a normochromic pedicled nodule was observed in the posterior tongue’s dorsum. Excisional biopsy was performed, and the report was of osseous choristoma. Because of the location and appearance of this lesion, it is important that the clinician knows its characteristics and possible differential diagnoses.

A 72-year-old female patient attended the dental office with a complaint of tongue lesion and a time course of 3 months. At the physical examination, a nodular lesion was found, located on the back of the tongue, with mucosa-like staining, firm consistency, sessile implantation, measuring approximately 1.5 cm. Considering the clinical findings, the diagnostic hypothesis was granular cell tumor, and the excisional biopsy performed. The histopathological examination showed regions of cartilaginous matrix and newly deposited bone matrix without cellular alterations and the diagnosis of choristoma was established. The choristoma is a growth like a tumor, exhibiting microscopically normal tissue in an abnormal location. They are benign and rare lesions, showing great predilection for the tongue, mainly posterior region in 85% of the cases. In 70% of cases of oral choristoma the patients are female.

Osseous choristoma is a rare, benign lesion that presents at an abnormal location as a tumor-like mass comprising mature bone tissue. We report the case of a 50-year-old man who developed osseous choristoma in the submandibular legion. The patient was referred to our clinic in May 2011 with a 4-year history of a progressively growing tumor-like swelling in the submandibular region. The lesion was a hard, mobile, well-circumscribed, globular mass. Computed tomography revealed a heterogeneous high-density mass on the left side of the submandibular region. There was no bony connection to the mandible. Bone scanning revealed an increased uptake of 99mTc labeled hydroxymethylene diphosphonate by the lesion. The tumor was resected via an extraoral approach under general anesthesia. During surgery, it was observed that the tumor was not closely adherent to adjacent structures such as muscles or the submandibular salivary gland. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen revealed features indicative of osseous choristoma. The postoperative course was uneventful and there has been no evidence of recurrence till date.

Osseous choristoma is a rare, benign lesion which usually develops in the tongue adjacent to the foramen caecum. This report presents a case occurring in the palatal region, as well as a review of the literature. A differential diagnosis of this condition from other bone-forming lesions of the soft tissue is also discussed.

Summary Choristomas are defined as proliferations of histologically normal tissue located in an abnormal position. Osseous choristomas of oral soft tissue are rare lesions, especially in children, occurring most frequently in the tongue, and less commonly in other sites such as buccal mucosa, palate and alveolar mucosa. It has been suggested that osseous choristomas have developmental or traumatic origins. Definite diagnosis can only be determined after histologic examination, whereupon the treatment of choice is surgical excision. Here we present, what is to our knowledge, a second case of buccal osseous choristoma in a pediatric patient, along with a brief review of the current, pertinent literature.

Osseous choristoma of the tongue is a relatively rare lesion with 53 cases previously published in the literature. In this article, two additional cases are described; one in a 53-year-old woman located close to the foramen caecum, and the other in a 18-year-old woman on the left of midline and just anterior to the circumvallate papillae that was observed over a 13-year period.

The osseous choristoma of buccal soft tissue (intraoral soft tissue osteoma) is a rare entity that is reported not to recur after removal. A case involving the first documented recurrence of such a lesion is reported, and a review of the literature is presented.

Osseous choristoma is a benign lesion defined as normal osseous proliferative tissue in an ectopic site. We report what we believe to be the first osseous choristoma to replace extraocular muscle.

2 cases of lingual osseous choristoma are reported. A brief review of the literature on this lesion is presented, and possible causes for this unusual case are discussed.

The lingual osseous choristoma is a rare benign lesion of the tongue, and it is difficult to make a correct preoperative diagnosis of these lesions. Two cases are presented in this article.
