Abstract

Power-to-X (PtX) is a large-scale, long-term energy storage approach for converting renewable electrical energy into various chemical fuels. Unlike conventional fossil fuel production processes that operate continuously, PtX processes encounter operational challenges due to fluctuations in renewable power supply. To improve the operational flexibility of PtX processes for industrial applications, it is crucial to develop systematic strategies that can adapt to these fluctuations, which will increase PtX's energy and cost efficiencies. This study comprehensively explores various strategies for flexible operation of renewable-powered PtX processes, which include the use of additional energy buffers and grid connections. Power and material allocation models are developed for PtX processes based on islanded; grid-assisted; and grid-assisted, bidirectional connections by using three possible energy buffers (i.e., hydrogen intermediate storage, Li-ion batteries, and Carnot batteries). Surrogate model-based optimization is performed to establish an economically optimal design for each case. A power-to-methanol process implemented in Kramer Junction, California is studied to investigate the effects of flexible operation strategies on process performance in terms of production cost, renewable penetration, and energy efficiency. The findings of this study offer new insights into the operational flexibility of PtX processes and provide general recommendations for improving the flexibility and performance of PtX, particularly with respect to the establishment of a grid connection and the selection of an appropriate energy buffer.

Abstract

Due to stringent regulatory norms, waste processing faces confrontations and challenges in adapting technology for effective management through a convenient and economical system. At the global level, attempts are underway to achieve a green and sustainable treatment for the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass as well as organic contaminants in wastewater. Enzymatic treatment in the environmental aspect thrived on being the promising rapid strategy that appeased the aforementioned predicament. On that account, coimmobilization of various enzymes on single support enhances the catalytic activity ensuing operational stability with industrial applications. This review pivoted towards the coimmobilization of enzymes on diverse supports and their applications in biomass conversion to industrial value-added products and removal of contaminants in wastewater. The limelight of this study chronicles the unique breakthroughs in biotechnology for the production of reusable biocatalysts, which inculcating various enzymes towards the scope of environment application.

Abstract

Pollution due to heavy metals is a global issue in recent years. Initially, there were fewer contaminants, which has increased exponentially owing to rapid industrialization and various anthropogenic activities. Toxicity due to heavy metals causes a lot of health problems and organ system failure in human beings. It also affects other forms of living beings such as plants, animals and even the microbiota. This has been reported by various press reports and research findings. In this review, the production of heavy metals, associated effects on the environment and the technologies employed for detecting these heavy metals are comprehensively discussed. The analytical instruments, including biosensors, have been found to be more beneficial than other techniques. Biosensor exhibits numerous special features, such as reproducibility, reusability, linearity, sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. Over the last three years, biosensors have also had a detection limit of 65.36 ng/mL for heavy metals. The design of biosensors, features and types were also explained in detail. The limit of detection for the heavy metals in wastewater using biosensors was also included with recent references up to the last five years.

Abstract

Gold nanoparticles were synthesized via radiolytic reduction of Au(III) salts induced by e− beam or γ-irradiation, using chitosan as a stabilizer. The effect of irradiation dose, chitosan concentration and the conditioning of HAuCl4–chitosan solutions were studied. UV–visible absorption measurements reveal that the size of Au clusters formed immediately after irradiation is correlated with the extent of chitosan scission chain of chitosan and fall with the increase of dose absorbed. This effect is more pronounced with solution conditioned under Argon (Ar). Au clusters coalesce to form stable nanoparticles after two weeks.

Abstract

A new iridoid, 5β,6β-dihydroxyantirrhide (1) was isolated from the dried leaves of Pseuderanthemum carruthersii (Seem.) Guill. var. atropurpureum (Bull.) Fosb. (Acanthaceae), together with 13 known compounds, including two iridoids, linarioside and antirrhinoside; five phenylethanoids, echipuroside A, verbascoside, isoverbascoside, isomartynoside and osmanthuside B; and six flavonoids, luteolin 7-O-β- d -glucopyranoside, luteolin 7-O-rutinoside, apigenin 7-O-rutinoside, apigenin 6-C-α- l -arabinopyranosyl–8-C-β- l -arabinopyranoside, apigenin 6,8-di-C-α- l -arabinopyranoside and apigenin 6-C-β- d -xylopyranosyl–8-C-α- l -arabinopyranoside. Their chemical structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR as well as HR-ESI-MS spectroscopic analysis. Some purified compounds were evaluated the acetylcholinesterase inhibition and cytotoxic activities against the HeLa cervical cancer cell line and the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line at the concentration of 100 μg/mL. Luteolin 7-O-β- d -glucopyranoside exhibited cytotoxic activities against both the HeLa cervical cancer cell line and the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line. Verbascoside and isoverbascoside showed strong cytotoxic activity against the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line. The tested compounds showed the AChE inhibitory activity fairly weak.

Abstract

This study focuses on evaluating the tourist demand to develop the tourism performance, specifically in Vietnam, via the collaboration between marketing management and supply chain management (SCM). The fuzzy and Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method is utilized to find out the cause and effect groups in the uncertainty of tourism field. The findings emphasize the important role of tour price in the activation of other tourism demand, specially, the quality of destinations. These results provide not only the direction for a tourism strategy, but also contribute a preference for the literature. Finally, some limitations and future research are recommended.
