New adsorbent material was obtained by modification of commercial Amberlite XAD7 with thiourea that represents a non-toxic, cheap and environmentally friendly extractant. Prepared adsorbent was used for removal of neodymium ions from aqueous solutions. Thiourea modified Amberlite involved in this study shows good adsorption capacities (74.3 mg/g) and excellent efficiency during Nd removal process. In order to elucidate the mechanism of the Nd adsorption process kinetic, thermodynamic and equilibrium studies were performed, establishing this way which kinetic model better describes the Nd adsorption process. Moreover the thermodynamic studies prove that the Nd adsorption on thiourea modified Amberlite XAD7 is an endothermic and spontaneous process.

Polymers involved as adsorbent materials during Eu(III) removal tests were prepared by functionalization of a natural polymer – cellulose, and a commercial one represented by Amberlite XAD7. As extractant, we used tetrabutil ammonium di-hydrogen phosphate (TBAH2P) which is a cheap and environmentally friendly product. Impregnated polymers using a rotavapor system in which the quaternary ammonium salt used as extractant was concentrated on to the used polymer. Later obtained materials were characterized by Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-Ray electron dispersion (EDX). During experimental test we determine pH, contact time, Eu(III) initial concentration and temperature effect on the functionalized polymers adsorption capacity. Therewith for both functionalized polymers, a comparison was made between the adsorption process characteristics based on kinetics and thermodynamic studies. Rationale & Objective The pathogenesis of disordered mineral metabolism in chronic kidney disease (CKD) is largely informed by cross-sectional studies of humans and longitudinal animal studies. We sought to characterize the longitudinal evolution of disordered mineral metabolism during the course of CKD. Study Design Retrospective analysis nested in a cohort study. Setting & Participants Participants in the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) Study who had up to 5 serial annual measurements of estimated glomerular filtration rate, fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23), parathyroid hormone (PTH), serum phosphate, and serum calcium and who subsequently reached end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) during follow-up (n = 847). Exposure Years before ESKD. Outcomes Serial FGF-23, PTH, serum phosphate, and serum calcium levels. Analytical Approach To assess longitudinal dynamics of disordered mineral metabolism in human CKD, we used "ESKD-anchored longitudinal analyses" to express time as years before ESKD, enabling assessments of mineral metabolites spanning 8 years of CKD progression before ESKD. Results Mean FGF-23 levels increased markedly as time before ESKD decreased, while PTH and phosphate levels increased modestly and calcium levels declined minimally. Compared with other mineral metabolites, FGF-23 levels demonstrated the highest rate of change (velocity: first derivative of the function of concentration over time) and magnitude of acceleration (second derivative). These changes became evident approximately 5 years before ESKD and persisted without deceleration through ESKD onset. Rates of changes in PTH and phosphate levels increased modestly and without marked acceleration around the same time, with modest deceleration immediately before ESKD, when use of active vitamin D and phosphate binders increased. Limitations Individuals who entered the CRIC Study at early stages of CKD and who did not progress to ESKD were not studied. Conclusions Among patients with progressive CKD, FGF-23 levels begin to increase 5 years before ESKD and continue to rapidly accelerate until transition to ESKD.

In the specializedliterature, there are many approaches developed for capturing textual measures: textual similarity, textual readability and textual sentiment. This paper proposes a new sentiment similarity measures between pairs of words using a fuzzy-based approach in which words are considered single-valued neutrosophic sets. We build our study with the aid of the lexical resource SentiWordNet 3.0 as our intended scope is to design a new word-level similarity measure calculated by means of the sentiment scores of the involved words. Our study pays attention to the polysemous words because these words are a real challenge for any application that processes natural language data. After our knowledge, this approach is quite new in the literature and the obtained results give us hope for further investigations.

Multi-layered structures, composed of thin films from materials with different compositions or physical properties, represents a way to obtain enhanced properties or even new functionalities. In this work, lead zirconate titanate PbZrxTi1-xO3 (PZT; x = 0.20, 0.52, 0.80) multilayers were grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on a single crystal strontium titanate (SrTiO3, STO) substrate, using a strontium ruthenate (SrRuO3, SRO) film as buffer layer for epitaxial growth, and also as back electrode. Up and down multi-layers were grown and their physical and structural properties were compared, up being the structure in which Zr concentration was varied from 20% near the STO substrate to 80% at the surface, while down is for the structure in which the Zr concentration starts with 80% near the substrate and ends with 20% at the surface. It was found that the electric and pyroelectric properties of the two graded structures are significantly different. The up structure presents electric properties that are comparable with those of single composition PZT films while the properties of the down structure are deteriorated, especially in terms of the leakage current magnitude. Pyroelectric signal could be measured only for the up structure. These differences were attributed to larger density of structural defects in the down structure compared to the up one. This is due to the different growth sequence: up structure starts with tetragonal PZT on cubic substrate (lower lattice mismatch, 1.1%) while down structure starts with rhombohedral PZT on cubic substrate (larger lattice mismatch, almost 5%).

The aim of the present paper is to develop ceramic thin films by laser ablation in order to improve the biological behaviour of metallic implants dedicated to hard tissue restoration. The composition of the coatings was selected within SiO2–P2O5–CaO–MgO–ZnO–CaF2 system, while their processing has gone through two stages: target preparation via a wet chemistry approach and films deposition through a physical deposition method, on titanium substrates. The characteristics of the final layered structures were evaluated by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and selected area electron diffraction. In vitro investigation techniques were employed for the bioactivity and biocompatibility assessment. The results indicated the growth of nanostructured akermanite-based thin films with an excellent bioactivity and a good effect on stem-type cells, which validates the suitability of such structures for medical implant applications.

In this article, we have presented the studies regarding the improvements of the adsorption performance of a styrene-12% divinylbenzene copolymer functionalized with aminophosphonate groups in the removal process of thallium ions from aqueous solutions, by impregnation of the solid support with trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium chloride (Cyphos IL-101). The use of ionic liquid impregnated polymer as adsorbent in the removal process of radionuclides presents higher adsorption performance because, in this case, the advantages of the ionic liquids are combined with the properties of the solid support. Until now the ionic liquids were intensive studied in the removal process of radionuclides from aqueous solutions but using the liquid–liquid extraction. In our case these are used in the solid–liquid separation process, a smaller quantity of ionic liquids being used (which decrease the cost of the adsorption process), and the loss of the ionic liquids in the aqueous phase being avoided. The ultrasonication method used for the impregnation of the ionic liquids onto the solid support is also a new and original one. The impregnation of the solid support with Cyphos IL-101 significantly increased its adsorption performance in the removal process of Tl(I) ions from aqueous solutions.

Pd nanoparticles are stabilized onto the surface of Fe3O4-entrapped poly(aminoethyl acrylamide) via functionalization of polymer with a new class of NNN-pincer ligand providing a high loading and stable catalyst for aerobic oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes. Varieties of alcohols are oxidized to the corresponding aldehydes with good selectivity using 0.95 mol% Pd catalyst. The catalyst is reusable (5 runs) without loss of activity and leaching or agglomeration of Pd nanoparticles while structural regularity of the catalyst is preserved. Oxidation of benzyl alcohol is also scaled up to a few grams.

Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process was employed in a galvanostatic regime on Zr-2.5Nb alloy in NaAlO2 aqueous electrolyte solutions within a concentration gradient of 5–30 g/L in order to produce Al2O3/ZrO2 composite coatings. The composition and microstructure of the oxide layers were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). Vickers microhardness, scratch adhesion and potentiodynamic polarization measurements were used to assess the mechanical and electrochemical properties of the PEO coatings. The experimental findings suggest a strong correlation between the electrolyte concentration and the coating layers. By increasing the concentration of NaAlO2 in the electrolyte solution, significantly increased tetragonal crystal structure, particle size, hardness, adhesion strength and corrosion resistance occur with pore size decrease. Best values for the hard and adherent coating were ∼1500 HV and ∼60 N critical load. The corrosion current densities for the plasma electrolytic oxidized samples are lower than the black oxide coated Zr alloy.

We report for the first time on the synthesis of NiO/ZnO one-dimensional (1D) nanowire (NW) based heterostructures by applying a suitable methodology of transport and condensation. The synthesis involves, firstly the growth of NiO NWs on gold (Au) catalyzed alumina substrates using the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism and then the formation of ZnO NWs directly on the NiO NWs using the vapor-solid (VS) mechanism. Sequential evaporation–condensation over Au-seeded alumina promotes the formation of NiO NWs, driven by the VLS growth mechanism. These NiO NWs act as backbones for the condensation of epitaxial ZnO nanostructures. The detailed morphological study of these heterostructures reveals that ZnO nanowires completely cover the whole NiO nanowires completely and growing out in the form of flat leaves from the NiO nanowire branches. The diameters of the NiO NWs have been found to vary from 15 nm to 60 nm. Selected area electron diffraction data (SAED) indicate an epitaxial growth of ZnO nanowires along (101)-planes on the strongly oriented NiO nanowires along (200) crystallographic planes. Finally, NiO NW and NiO/ZnO heterostructure based conductometric gas sensing devices have been fabricated and the comparison between their sensing performances have been compared. Interestingly, NiO/ZnO NWs heterostructure based sensing devices shows superior performance compared to NiO sensors toward volatile organic compounds (VOC).

By platinum deposition on a 150 nm thick film of lead zirco-titanate oriented PZT(001), grown on strontium titanate (001) single crystals with a strontium ruthenate buffer layer, which did not show initial preferential out-of-plane orientation of its ferroelectric polarization, a band bending near the interface towards lower energies is observed using photoelectron spectroscopy, by following all core levels from the substrate (Pb 4f, Zr 3d, Ti 2p, O 1s). This is unexpected given the fact that platinum has a larger work function than PZT and a rectifying contact for electrons is expected to be built at the interface. This observation may have two explanations: (i) platinum forms an alloy with elements from PZT yielding a metal with considerable lower work function; (ii) platinum provides electrons to the substrate which are able to compensate the depolarization field generated by the outwards polarization state. Several arguments are brought in favor of the second hypothesis, especially the attenuation of core levels from the substrate which is well described by exponential functions with reasonable values of the photoelectron inelastic mean free path, suggesting the formation of a sharp interface. High resolution transmission electron microscopy confirmed the sharpness of the interface.

The paper presents a new approach for product value analysis by combining a classical approach with a straightforward (intuitive) one and incorporating a new method of calculating (setting up) a statistical confidence interval in terms of functionality and cost. In this process, the value analysis team can observe the differences between the ideal and real function to cost ratio and easily set up a confidence interval avoiding negative effects on the overall product quality. Moreover, computing an “close to optimal state” for the function-cost ratio, results in a better understanding of the differences, thus aiding the process of generating solutions for adjusting the ratio in case of cost reduction or reallocation, integrating a new function, product reengineering or modernization.

Innovation is an important competitive advantage for market success. Faster, cheaper, better are the keywords of the current competitive environment. For this to occur, products and services need to address customer needs in such a way as to fulfil what they expect but in the same time delight them through unexpected and attractive features. The theory of attractive quality uses the Kano methodology, a value components model, when thinking about product features in this way. Unfortunately, the Kano questionnaire mainly analyses customer satisfaction regarding an existing offer, thus a post purchase evaluation. In the case of new and innovative products or services, we do not have prior consumer value or a “standard” to compare it with. Therefore, we must rely on pre-purchase judgment. But what is desired customer value and with what concepts should it be associated with? The present paper aims to delimit customer value pre-purchase perception from post-purchase perception and determine the terms and key words which best represent the customer's perspective in this situation. The ultimate goal is to present a first conceptual step into the development of an alternative to the Kano model for the design stage of innovative products and services.

Magnetic nanoparticles embedded in the active layer of the Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) significantly increases the electroluminescence and the charge transport without influencing the transparency of these devices. A brief comparison was done in order to identify which parameter influences these properties, by comparing the CoFe 2 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles with CoFe 2 metallic magnetic nanoparticles, the latter one being obtained by thermal reduction in hydrogen of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles. CoFe 2 have shown a better efficiency of the metallic nanoparticles where probably the main advantage is the higher magnetization property instead of the coercive field. Concerning the charge transport across the OLEDs, these nanoparticles reduce the electron injection, acting as filling traps, which directly increases the electroluminescence and the current at the same voltage.

44. Dynamic CAPM under ambiguity—An experimental approach

We develop an experimental financial market using real data in which subjects trade two assets for 30 periods in an ambiguous environment. The main goal is to verify if CAPM holds when subjects have homogenous knowledge about future payoffs given current ambiguous market conditions. We find that (i) CAPM holds in a dynamic market setting when exogenous information on the issuing companies’ states changes over time and when economic conditions are experiencing steady growth, (ii) subjects are mostly influenced by indebtedness and profitability fundamentals, (iii) the number of years of study in financial markets and stress positively influenced their final payoff, (iv) statistically, women obtained lower returns and (v) overconfidence negatively influenced individual payoffs. One novelty of the study consists in the use of real fundamental and macroeconomic variables as exogenous information for participants in generating the price processes, thus simulating an experimental financial market.

The present work is focused on the investigation of tetra-anti-chiral structures by means of experimental, numerical, and analytical methods. Specimens with different lengths of the ligaments were manufactured by laser-cutting and were tested under a compressive load to investigate the value and evolution of Poisson's ratio. Based on the experimental investigation of the material used to manufacture the samples, finite element models were developed and solved using Ls-Dyna. Subsequently, based on the strain energy approach, an analytical solution for the estimate of the Poisson's ratio was derived. The solution is capable of estimating the value for structures with various configurations, including lengths and thickness of the ligaments. A simple beam finite element model was developed and implemented for solving in MATLAB, to extend the capabilities for evaluation and design of structures with specific parameters. An overall comparison of results is presented, showing a good agreement between datasets. The present work might set the background for future activities, allowing for a selection of individual investigation methods.

The present paper presents the influence of the ionic liquid nature impregnated onto Florisil upon the adsorption performance of the obtained material in the removal process of Tl(I) ions from aqueous solutions. The impregnation of the studied ionic liquid onto Florisil was realized through ultrasonication which proved to be an efficient method because is not time consuming, combine the advantages of the ionic liquids with those of the solid support, is used a smaller amount of the ionic liquid and there is no risk of loss of the extractant in the aqueous phase. The FTIR, SEM, and energy dispersive EDX applied to the obtained adsorbents proved the fact that the Florisil solid support was impregnated with the studied ionic liquids and also put in evidence the morphology changes of the solid support produced by its impregnation with these ionic liquids. Equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic data were applied in order to determine the efficiency of the studied adsorbent in the removal process of Tl(I) ions. The phosphonium based ionic liquid impregnated onto Florisil developed a higher efficiency in the removal process of thallium ions from aqueous solution then the materials obtained through impregnation of Florisil with imidazolium based ionic liquids.
