The anti-depressant effect of berberine (BBR) has been widely reported. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. The microbiota-gut-brain (MGB) axis plays a key role in the pathogenesis of depression. Therefore, we aimed to explore the anti-depressant mechanisms of BBR involving the association of the gut microbiota, neurotransmitters, BDNF, and SCFAs in chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced depressive rats.The antidepressant effects of BBR were detected by open-field test, 1 % sucrose preference test and body weight test in CUMS-induced depressive rats. 16S rDNA sequencing was performed to identify the change of gut microbiota. The concentrations of fecal SCFAs were analyzed by GC-MS targeted metabolomics. At the same time, neurotransmitters and BDNF expression were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).BBR improved depression-like behaviors in CUMS rats by increasing the expression of serotonin (5-HT), norepinephrine (NE), dopamine (DA), and BDNF in the hippocampus. BBR regulates Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Lachnospiraceae in depressive rats, resulting in the alteration of the synthesis and metabolism of SCFAs, including acetic, propanoic, and isovaleric acids.Direct evidence that BBR improves depressive behaviors via gut microbiota-SCFAs-brain axis is lacking, and only male rats were investigated in the present study.The anti-depressant mechanism of BBR is related to the regulation of the MGB axis via modulating the gut microbiota-SCFAs-monoamine neurotransmitters/BDNF.

Three-dimensional (3D) porous boron-doped diamond (BDD) film is an attractive electrode material but tough to synthesize. Herein, the 3D porous BDD films were constructed in a facile and template-free way. The BDD/non-diamond carbon (NDC) composite films were firstly fabricated by hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) technique, and then the porous BDD films with 3D interconnected porous microstructure, different pore size and NDC-free diamond were achieved by selective removal of NDC. It is manifested that higher electrochemical response, large double layer capacitance (17.54 mF/cm2) in diamond electrodes, wide electrochemical window of 2.6 V and superior long-term stability were achieved for 3D porous BDD film. This derives from the synergistic effect of microstructure and phase composition of the porous films. 3D interconnected structure possesses prominent improvement of effective surface area and accessible porous channel, significantly enhancing the species adsorption and mass transfer. The 3D porous BDD films, composed of NDC-free diamond, exhibit excellent structural stability and corrosion resistance, which favor the enhancement of long-term stability and water splitting overpotential. The facile fabricating approach and excellent structure/electrochemical character demonstrate the appealing application in many electrochemical fields for 3D porous BDD films, such as energy storage and conversion, wastewater treatment and purification.

To tackle the dissolution problem of boron carbide particles in silicon infiltration process, carbon-coated boron carbide particles were fabricated for the preparation of the reaction-bonded boron carbide composites. The carbon coating can effectively protect the boron carbide from reacting with liquid Si and their dissolution, thus maintaining the irregular shape of boron carbide particles and preventing the growth of boron carbide particles and reaction formed SiC regions. Furthermore, the nano-SiC particles, originated from the reaction of the carbon coating and the infiltrated Si, uniformly coated on the surfaces of boron carbide particles, thus forming a ceramic skeleton of the nano-SiC particles-coated and -bonded boron carbide particles. The Vickers hardness, flexural strength and fracture toughness of the composites can be increased by 26 %, 45 %, and 37 % respectively, by using carbon-coated boron carbide particles as raw materials.

Ambient air pollution is a global public health issue. Recent evidence suggests that exposure to fine aerosolized particulate matter (PM) as small as ≤2.5 microns (PM2.5) is neurotoxic to brain structures. Many studies also suggest exposure to PM2.5 may cause neurotoxicity and affect brain function. However, the molecular mechanisms by which PM2.5 exerts these effects are not fully understood. Thus, we evaluated the hypothesis that PM2.5 exposure exerts its neurotoxic effects via increased oxidative and inflammatory cellular damage and mitochondrial dysfunction using human SH-SY5Y neuronal cells. Here, we show PM2.5 exposure significantly decreases viability, and increases caspase 3 and 9 protein expression and activity in SH-SY5Y cells. In addition, PM2.5 exposure decreases SH-SY5Y survival, disrupts cell and mitochondrial morphology, and significantly decreases ATP levels, D-loop levels, and mitochondrial mass and function (maximal respiratory function, COX activity, and mitochondrial membrane potential) in SH-SY5Y cells. Moreover, SH-SY5Y cells exposed to PM2.5 have significantly decreased mRNA and protein expression levels of survival genes (CREB and Bcl-2) and neuroprotective genes (PPARγ and AMPK). We further show SH-SY5Y cells exposure to PM2.5 induces significant increases in the levels of oxidative stress, and expression levels of the inflammatory mediator’s TNF-α, IL-1β, and NF-κB. Taken together, these results provide the first evidence of the biochemical, molecular and morphological effects of PM2.5 on human neuronal SH-SY5Y cells, and support our hypothesis that increased mitochondrial disruption, oxidative stress and inflammation are critical mediators of its neurotoxic effects. These findings further improve our understanding of the neuronal cell impact of PM2.5 exposure, and may be useful in the design of strategies for the treatment and prevention of human neurodegenerative disorders.

The inclined magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) unsteady flow and heat transfer of Casson hybrid nanofluid (HNF) due to porous stretching sheet is investigated. In the present paper we analyze the Casson fluid unsteady flow over permeable flat plate in the presence of inclined magnetic field and heat transfer of fluid with the effect of thermal radiation. The conservation of mass, conservation of momentum and thermal equations are non-dimensional into the system of nonlinear ODEs by taking the suitable similarity transformation. An exact analytical solution is obtained for velocity. The energy equation in the presence of inclined magnetic field and radiation is a differential equation with variable coefficients, which is transformed to an incomplete gamma function using a new variable and using the Rosseland approximation for the radiation. The governing differential equations are solved analytically and the effects of various parameters on velocity profiles, skin friction coefficient, temperature profile and wall heat transfer are presented graphically. There is an enhancement in heat transfer and pressure drop by usage of HNF. The variations in velocity and temperature profiles with respect to different various pertinent physical parameters. An increase of the mass transpiration (suction) parameter intensity increases the skin friction, which consequently improves the heat transfer enhancement and reduces the HNF temperature. Furthermore, the skin friction coefficient increases due to mass suction and MHD in the stretching sheet, whereas the rate of heat transfer decays. The results have possible technological applications in liquid-based systems involving stretchable materials.

Tremendous demands for highly sensitive and stable seawater salinometers have motivated intensive research on advanced electrode materials. Boron-doped diamond (BDD) is attractive in terms of its high mechanical stability and chemical inertness, but is usually hindered by its low double-layer capacitance (Cdl) for seawater salinity detection. Here, inspired by the principle of oxygen-terminated BDD electrode endowing higher Cdl than hydrogen-terminated surface, we introduce the oxygen terminated surface by oxygen plasma or reactive ion etch (RIE), and the fabricated oxygen terminated BDD electrodes demonstrate high sensitivity and long-term stability in seawater salinity detection comparing with the hydrogen terminated BDD electrodes. Significantly, the as-fabricated O-BDD-RIE electrodes not only show remarkable enhanced response even better than the commercial platinum black electrodes but also display long-time stability which is weekly verified by continuous monitor for 90 days. The outstanding performance of the oxygen terminated BDD electrodes can be ascribed to the enhancement of C-O surface functional group on Cdl. In addition, a comprehensive analysis of effective electroactive surface area (EASA) and Cdl proves that the surface oxygen is the major factor for the improved Cdl. In summary, the excellent oxygen terminated BDD electrodes promise potential application in seawater salinity detection.

Treatments of atherogenesis, one of the most common cardiovascular diseases (CVD), are continuously being made thanks to innovation and an increasingly in-depth knowledge of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), the most revolutionary medical procedure used for vascular restoration. Combined with an expanding balloon, vascular stents used at stricture sites enable the long-time restoration of vascular permeability. However, complication after stenting, in-stent restenosis (ISR), hinders the advancement of vascular stents and are associated with high medical costs for patients for decades years. Thus, the development of a high biocompatibility stent with improved safety and efficiency is urgently needed. This review provides an overview of current advances and potential technologies for the modification of stents for better treatment and prevention of ISR. In particular, the mechanisms of in-stent restenosis are investigated and summarized with the aim to comprehensively understanding the pathogenesis of stent complications. Then, according to different therapeutic functions, the current stent modification strategies are reviewed, including polymeric drug eluting stents, biological friendly stents, pro-healing stents, and gene stents. Finally, the review provides an outlook of the challenges in the design of stents with optimal properties. Therefore, this review is a valuable and practical guideline for the development of cardiovascular stents.

The TiO2-Ag hybrid nanofluids were prepared by diluting high-concentration nanofluids and adding Span80 as surfactants. The stability of nanofluids was studied by taking photos of the nanofluids with storage time of 0–30 days. The thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity were measured at different volume fraction, temperature and ultrasonication time. The results showed that compared with the base fluid, the maximum enhancement of thermal conductivity was 9.98%, and the maximum dynamic viscosity ratio was 2.78. And ultrasonication treatment is recommended to alleviate the sedimentation of nanofluids. Then, two artificial neural networks (ANNs) were established and the size of the networks was optimized according to the relative error to improve the ability to predict the thermal properties of nanofluids. The results show that the maximum relative error of the prediction of thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity is 1.44% and 3.54%, respectively, which is beneficial to saving experiment time and cost.

The dependence of interfacial contact resistance (ICR) on contact materials between cathode and interconnect is systematically studied under both isothermal oxidation and thermal cycling conditions. Three kinds of cathode current-collecting layer (CCCL) are used, (La,Sr) (Co,Fe)O3 (LSCF), LSCF+10%Ag, and Ag, and tested in a SUS430/CCCL/SUS430 sandwich structure to simulate the actual operation of the solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Experimental results show that the ICR of LSCF+10%Ag exhibits the smallest value, in comparison with the specimens with LSCF and Ag paste, as well as the sample without a CCCL. For LSCF+10%Ag contact, the ICR increases from 0.0069 mΩ cm2 to 3.74 mΩ cm2 under an isothermal condition for 150 h, then increases from 3.74 mΩ cm2 to 10.79 mΩ cm2 after 15 thermal cycles. This work provides information for the understanding of possible mechanisms of performance degradation of SOFCs.

Application of extracorporeal circuits and indwelling medical devices has saved many lives. However, it is accompanied with two major complications: thrombosis and infection. To address this issue, we apply therapeutic nitric oxide gas (NO) and antibacterial peptide for synergistically tailoring such devices for surface anti-thrombogenic and antifouling dual functions. Such functional surface is realized by stepwise conjugation of NO-generating compound of 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTA) chelated copper ions (Cu-DOTA) and dibenzylcyclooctyne- (DBCO-) modified antimicrobial peptide based on carbodiimide and click chemistry respectively. The integration of peptide and Cu-DOTA grants the modified surface the ability to not only efficiently inhibit bacterial growth, but also catalytically generate NO from endogenous s-nitrosothiols (RSNO) to reduce adhesion and activation of platelets, preventing the formation of thrombus. We envision that the stepwise synergistic modification strategy by using anticoagulant NO and antibacterial peptide would facilitate the surface multifunctional engineering of extracorporeal circuits and indwelling medical devices, with reduced clinical complications associated with thrombosis and infection., Graphical abstract Image 1, Highlights • We report a bionic surface strategy for blood-contacting devices by integrating anti-thrombogenic and anti-microbial dual functions. Here, we engineer an endothelium-mimicking surface by combination of the nitric oxide (NO)-generating property and anti-microbial functions of a healthy endothelium, in which the generated gas signal molecule NO and the anti-microbial peptide (AMP) jointly provide synergistic effects against thrombogenicity and biofouling. • An endothelium-bionic surface strategy is proposed for tailoring surface multi-functionalities. • Carbodiimide and click chemistries were used for realizing synergistic tethering of NO-generating species and bio-clickable antimicrobial peptide. • The integration of NO and antimicrobial peptide imparts the tubing surface with anti-thrombogenic and anti-fouling dual functions. The integration of NO releasing and AMP tethering endows the tubing surface with significant anti-thrombogenic and anti-fouling properties. We envision that this bio-inspired surface engineering strategy will provide a promising solution to address the clinical issues.

Background/Purpose: Multiple sclerosis is classified as a rare disease in Taiwan. This study evaluated the safety and effectiveness of fingolimod in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) from routine clinical practice in Taiwan. Methods: In this retrospective, multicentre, observational study, we collected clinical data of patients treated with fingolimod 0.5 mg/day in routine clinical practice between September 2012 and December 2015. Primary outcome was the overall safety of fingolimod; secondary outcome was the annualized relapse rate (ARR). Results: Overall, 62/69 (86.1%) patients were on fingolimod by the end of data collection period. Mean age (±standard deviation [SD]) at inclusion was 37.7 ± 10.10 years; mean duration of MS was 5.4 ± 4.52 years and mean duration of fingolimod exposure was 135.8 patient-years. The most common adverse events (AEs) were bradycardia (21.7%; first-dose related), upper respiratory tract infection, dizziness, and hypoaesthesia (numbness) (11.6% each), followed by urinary tract infection and back pain (7.2% each). Seven patients had liver enzyme-related AEs. Eight patients had absolute lymphocyte counts

Influenza A virus is a single-stranded RNA virus that can cause great mortality and economic loss worldwide. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are non-coding RNAs that have been shown to have important functions in the regulation of biological processes. However, their functions during the influenza A virus infection process remain unclear. Herein, RNA sequencing technology was used to identify circRNAs expressed in mouse lungs during infection with H7N9/PB2-627 K/701D (H7N9/Wild-type) virus and PB2 mutant viruses (H7N9/PB2-627E/701D and H7N9/PB2-627E/701 N). We identified 7126 circRNAs at different genomic locations during H7N9 influenza virus and its mutant virus infections, of which 186 were differentially expressed. Enrichment analysis revealed that the differentially expressed circRNAs were associated with the viral infection process. Our study shows that circRNA expression profiles were altered following H7N9 influenza A virus infection and the differentially expressed circRNAs may have an important immune-regulating function during viral infection.

Objective To assess interstitial lung disease (ILD) risk among patients newly diagnosed with systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARDs) including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), dermatomyositis (DMtis), polymyositis (PM), systemic sclerosis (SSc), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS). Method Using the 1997–2013 Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database, we identified 62,930 newly diagnosed SARD patients from 2001 to 2013. We selected 251,720 individuals without SARD diagnoses who were matched (1:4) with SARD patients by age, sex and year of index date. We compared the incidence rates (IRs) of ILD (consistent diagnosis with ICD-9 code 515, 516.3, 516.8, 516.9 or 517 after a ILD-related radiological or pathological procedure) between the specific SARD subgroups and the corresponding non-SARD comparison groups. Using multivariable Cox regression analyses, we estimated hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of ILD in the various SARD groups compared with comparison groups after adjusting for age, sex and Charlson comorbidity index. Results The IR of ILD was greatest among patients with SSc (1,364 per 105 years), followed by DMtis (1,011 per 105 years), PM (831 per 105 years), pSS (196 per 105 years), RA (109 per 105 years) and SLE (120 per 105 years). Multivariable analyses showed that the risk of ILD was increased among patients with SSc (HR, 172.63), DMtis (HR, 119.61), PM (HR, 84.89), SLE (HR, 32.18), pSS (HR, 17.54), or RA (HR, 8.29). Conclusion This population-based, cohort study demonstrates that the risk of ILD is significantly increased in patients with newly diagnosed SARDs.

The effect of the surface wettability of plasma-modified vertical Si nanowire array on the bio-fouling performance has been investigated. The Si nanowires prepared by a metal-assisted chemical etching technique exhibit a super-hydrophilic surface. The treatment in CH4/H2 gas plasma environment leads to the decoration of graphite and diamond nanoparticles around Si nanowires. The detailed interface between graphite/diamond and Si nanowire was characterized by HRTEM technique. These surface-modified nanowire samples show an increased water contact angle with ultrananocrystalline diamond decorated ones being superhydrophobic. The immersion test in chlorella solution reveals that the diamond-coated Si nanowires possess the least attachment of chlorella in comparison with other Si nanowires. This result confirms that the coating of Si nanowires with diamond nanoparticles shows the best behavior in anti-biofouling. Importantly, this work provides a method fabricated super-hydrophobic surface for the application of biofouling prevention.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that develops mainly in women of reproductive age. We aimed to explore the risk of pregnancy complications in Asian patients with SLE.From January 2005 to December 2014, we conducted a nationwide case-control study, using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. Obstetric complications and perinatal outcomes in SLE patients were compared with those without SLE.2059 SLE offspring and 8236 age-matched, maternal healthy controls were enrolled. We found increased obstetric and perinatal complications in SLE population compared with healthy controls. SLE patients exhibited increased risk of preeclampsia/eclampsia (8.98% vs.1.98%, odds ratio [OR]: 3.87, 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 3.08-4.87, p0.0001). Their offspring tended to have lower Apgar scores (7) at both 1 min (10.7% vs. 2.58%, p0.0001) and 5 min (4.25% vs. 1.17%, p0.0001), as well as higher rates of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR, 9.91% vs. 4.12%, OR: 2.24, 95% CI: 1.85-2.71, p0.0001), preterm birth (23.70% vs 7.56%, OR: 3.00, 95% CI: 2.61-3.45, p0.0001), and stillbirth (4.23% vs. 0.87%, OR: 3.59, 95% CI: 2.54-5.06, p0.0001). The risks of preterm birth and stillbirth were markedly increased in SLE patients with concomitant preeclampsia/eclampsia or IUGR. Preterm birth of SLE patients was 1~4 gestational weeks earlier than that of healthy controls and the peak occurrence of stillbirth in SLE population was at 20~30 gestational weeks.Asian SLE patients exhibited increased risks of maternal complications and adverse birth outcomes. Frequent antenatal visits before 20 gestational weeks are recommended in high-risk SLE patients.

In this study, an ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) method was originally developed for simultaneously quantitative analysis of twelve paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins, referring to STX, NEO, dcSTX, GTX1, GTX2, GTX3, GTX4, GTX5, C1, C2, dcGTX2, and dcGTX3 in bivalve molluscs. Chromatographic separations were performed on a TSK-Gel Amide-80 column (5 μm, 2.0 × 150 mm, Tosoh Corporation) by gradient elution with 2 mmol L−1 ammonium formate solution-acetonitrile (containing 0.1% formic acid) as mobile phases. The samples were pretreated by extraction with acetonitrile-water (80:20, v/v; containing 0.1% formic acid), followed by cleaning up using an Oasis HLB extraction cartridge (500 mg/6 mL). The present method showed good linearity (r2 > 0.99) with the limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) ranged from 1.03 to 10.65 μg/kg and 3.43–35.46 μg/kg, respectively for these toxins. Owing to its sensitivity and rapid properties, the presented method was applied to the determination of PSP toxins in bivalve molluscs involved in a food poisoning incident occurred in Zhangzhou, China, in June 2017.

This paper conducts a new investigation of air purification with total heat recovery based on nanofluids for the first time to realize the synergistic application of nanofluids to the heat and mass transfer as well as the photocatalysis and sterilization fields. To explore the feasibility of the new application, the stable TiO2 nanofluids were obtained by a post-treated optimized preparation method. Then the experimental device is built to investigate the formaldehyde and total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) purification as well as sterilization. At last, the heat recovery characteristics of nanofluids are indirectly investigated by testing the gas-liquid bubbling heat transfer behaviour. The results show the post-treated method can improve the dispersion stability of nanofluids. The nanofluid system has efficient effects on air purification and sterilization for both fungi and bacteria. The nanofluids have higher gas-liquid bubbling heat transfer performance than water which increased as the particle loading.

Silicon vacancy (SiV) centers in CVD-deposited nanodiamond particles or films always exhibit a photoluminescent (PL)-quenching behavior. Herein, in order to overcome this issue, air annealing of nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) films with uniform doping of Si atoms is employed to improve the PL emission efficiency of SiV centers. Without severe mass loss in diamond, SiV centers exhibit an increased PL emission intensity at 738 nm with an increased annealing temperature and time. In comparison to the untreated film, the maximum PL enhancement reaches about 200 and 1473 folds when the NCD films are annealed at 600 °C for 60 min and 700 °C for 20 min, respectively. Such giant increase in SiV PL emission is mainly attributed to the transition of diamond surface from hydrogen to oxygen termination together with the optimized crystalline quality of the annealed films, as confirmed by the HRTEM, Raman and XPS measurements. A schematic model based on the theory of surface band bending is proposed to elucidate the mechanism of the SiV PL enhancement in oxygen-terminated NCD films: a near-surface light trap layer formed in hydrogen-terminated NCD is converted during the oxidation process, leading to the additional collection of SiV PL emission from the inner layer.

ObjectivesTo investigate the differences between the vector vaccine ChAdOx1 nCoV-19/AZD1222 (Oxford-AstraZeneca) and mRNA-based vaccine mRNA-1273 (Moderna) in patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases (AIRD), and to explore the cell-cell interactions between high and low anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG levels in patients with rheumatic arthritis (RA) using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq).MethodsFrom September 16 to December 10, 2021, we consecutively enrolled 445 participants (389 patients with AIRD and 56 healthy controls), of whom 236 were immunized with AZD1222 and 209 with mRNA-1273. The serum IgG antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 receptor-binding domain was quantified by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay at 4-6 weeks after vaccination. Moreover, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from RA patients at 4-6 weeks after vaccination for scRNA-seq and further analyzed by CellChat. ScRNA-seq of PBMCs samples from GSE201534 in the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database were also extracted for analysis.ResultsThe anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG seropositivity rate was 85.34% for AIRD patients and 98.20% for healthy controls. The anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG level was higher in patients receiving mRNA-1273 than those receiving AZD1222 (β: 35.25, 95% CI: 14.81-55.68, p=0.001). Prednisolone-equivalent dose >5 mg/day and methotrexate use in AIRD patients, and non-anti-tumor necrosis factor-α biologics and Janus kinase inhibitor use in RA patients were associated with inferior immunogenicity. ScRNA-seq revealed CD16-monocytes were predominant in RA patients with high anti-SARS-CoV2-IgG antibodies, and enriched pathways related to antigen presentation via MHC class II were found. HLA-DRA and CD4 interaction was enhanced in high anti-SARS-CoV2-IgG group.ConclusionsmRNA-1273 and AZD1222 vaccines exhibited differential immunogenicity in AIRD patients. Enriched pathways related to antigen presentation via MHC class II in CD16-monocytes might be associated with higher anti-SARS-CoV2-IgG level in RA patients and further study is warranted.

In-stent restenosis (ISR) and late thrombosis, usually caused by excessive smooth muscle cell (SMC) proliferation and delayed endothelial layer repair, respectively, are the main risks for the failure of vascular stent implantation. For years, modification of stents with biomolecules that could selectively inhibit SMC proliferation and support endothelial cell (EC) growth had drawn extensive attention. However, the modulatory effect of these biomolecules faces the impact of oxidative stress, inflammation, and hyperlipidemia of the pathological vascular microenvironment, which is caused by the stent implantation injury and atherosclerosis lesions. Here, we modified stents with a natural and multi-functional flavonoid, baicalin (BCL), using poly-dopamine (PDA) coating technology to combat the harmful impact of the pathological microenvironment. Stent with an appropriate BCL immobilization density (approximately 2.03 μg/cm2) successfully supported ECs growth while inhibited SMC proliferation. Furthermore, baicalin-modified surfaces regulated the oxidative stress, inflammation, and high-lipid of the pathological microenvironment to inhibit endothelial dysfunction and the oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL)-induced macrophage foam cells formation. In vivo results showed that baicalin-modified stents exhibited significant anti-ISR, anti-inflammatory, and endothelialization-promoting functions. Our study suggests that the multi-functional baicalin with pathological microenvironment-regulation (PMR) effect has potential use in the surface engineering of cardiovascular devices. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Baicalin, a plant flavonoid, was covalently immobilized on the surface of the cardiovascular material. 1. The baicalin-modified surfaces selectively inhibit excessive growth of SMCs while supporting the healthy growth of ECs. 2. The baicalin-modified surfaces regulate the pathological microenvironments by reducing the oxidative stress, inflammatory, and ox-LDL induced macrophage to foam cell transition. 3. The baicalin-modified stent showed excellent in vivo biocompatibility.

Reverse osmosis (RO) is an essential unit for producing high-quality ultrapure water. The increasingly severe water shortage and water quality deterioration result in reclaimed water as an alternative source for ultrapure water production. However, when using reclaimed water as water sources, the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in RO permeate exhibits higher concentration and more sophisticated components than when using clean water sources, thus affecting the effluent quality of ultrapure water and the effectiveness of subsequent treatment processes. To optimize the treatment processes, it is crucial to analyze the components of DOC. This review summarizes the enrichment and analysis methods of trace organic matter, and provides recommendations for the analysis and characterization of DOC in RO permeate. The study summarizes the operating conditions and enrichment properties of different enrichment methods, including solid-phase extraction, liquid-liquid extraction, purge-and-trap, lyophilization and rotary evaporation for low-concentration organic compounds, compares the applicability and limitations of different enrichment methods, and proposes the principles for the selection of enrichment methods. In this review, we discuss the application of mass spectrometry (including Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry) in the analysis of DOC components, and focus on data processing as the key procedure in analysis of DOC in RO permeate. Despite the advantages of mass spectrometry, an applicable workflow and open-source database are required to improve the reliability of the analysis. The treatability properties of DOC are suggested to be determined by analyzing the component characteristics or in combination with common removal techniques. This study provides theoretical support for a comprehensive analysis of DOC in RO permeates to improve the removal effect.
