Geomorphological investigations coupled with sedimentological, petrographical, and SEM analyses allowed to identify, for the first time, a paleo-fixed and inland aeolian dune field in the Gioia Tauro Plain, on the Tyrrhenian side of southern Calabria (southern Italy). The aeolian landforms, extended over an area of 43 km2, are characterized by smoothed and elongated NW-SE trending vegetation-fixed linear dunes, varying in height from a few meters up to 20 m. Forty sand samples were collected from dunes to perform laboratory analyses. Grain size analyses showed that samples are composed of unimodal coarse-grained sands (Mz = 0.820 φ), moderately sorted (σ = 0.862), positively skewed (Sk1 = 0.173) and mesokurtic (KG = 1.115). Petrographic analyses highlighted a composition dominated by quartz and minor feldspars. Modal data, and especially the high F/Q ratio and the Rg:Rs:Rm triangular plot, suggest a plutoniclastic supply from the Aspromonte Massif crystalline source rocks. SEM analyses of sand grains clearly displayed the presence of typical wind-generated features mainly represented by rounded form with low relief, bulbous edges, and dish-shaped depressions. These results combined with morphological analyses showed that these aeolian deposits fall into the category of sand sheets. Furthermore, geological and geoarchaeological data evidenced that dune field was formed in the time interval between ~28 ka and the VI - IV century B.C. The dune filed formation has been interrupted presumably by the combined effect of Holocene tectonics, along the Gioia Tauro-San Ferdinando normal fault, and the lowering of sea level, during the Last Glacial period, originating a natural barrier to windblown sand particles. The findings of the paper will help in understanding both inland aeolian products in southern Europe associated to the second colder phase of the Last Glacial period in the Mediterranean area and the complex patterns of spatial and temporal distribution, as well as the control factors determining preservation of the aeolian sediments throughout the rock record.

On 15 February 2010, as a result of intense and long-lasting rainfalls, a large landslide affected a wide area near the town of Maierato (Calabria, Italy). The studies conducted – including (i) aerial photo interpretation, (ii) geological and geomorphological field investigations, (iii) interpretations of lithology and stratigraphy from borehole data, and (iv) observation of videos filmed during the main diastrophic phases of the landslide and of antecedent Google Street View® images – allowed researchers to reconstruct the geological and tectonic setting of the slope and the internal structure of the landslide with the estimation of the depth of the sliding surface, the triggering mechanisms and its evolution. The analysis of the prelandslide event setting demonstrates that this mass movement is the reactivation of a preexisting landslide of alleged seismic origin, remaining at an incipient stage. The Maierato landslide occurred on a gentle slope made of late Miocene to Plio-Pleistocene clastic and evaporitic sedimentary rocks. The main basal failure surface that developed on the hemipelagic marls has a maximum depth of 50 m. The volume of the landslide is ~ 5 million cubic meters. The type of landslide movement is a complex one, consisting of a very rapid slide of rock and earth and of flow of debris and earth. The landslide clearly shows three major types of failure mechanisms: the first type is described as a rapidly moving rotational slide where back-tilted blocks of sediment are preserved; the second type includes a very rapidly moving translational slide of large rock blocks; the third type includes sudden, extremely rapid flow-slides where the slide material is disaggregated while flowing downward along a gentle slope. The slide is a compound one, with a retrogressive evolution and transformation into earth and debris flow during the failure. After the triggering of the landslide, and as a result of the relevant displacement, an important portion of the lower evaporitic unit ( Calcare di Base Formation), close to the failure surface, collapsed, thereby undergoing a quick change of its mechanical behavior that became similar to that of a viscous fluid. During the landslide evolution, large rocky blocks consisting of Miocene evaporitic limestones, Pliocene silty clays, and sands were rafted, without severe disturbance, on the destructurated and fluidized limestone. The intense destructuration and the presence of water transformed the limestone (in the lower parts of the unit) into a viscous material that was squeezed out of the landslide mass through the jags between the several rafted rocky blocks and along the natural levees of flow tongue. This event is a rather frequent combination of mass movements made complicated and spectacular by the fluidization of the weak limestone that imparted great dynamics to the movements. Such fluidization is an infrequent phenomenon especially in this geological context.

This work describes the application of Logistic Regression (LR) to an assessment of susceptibility to mass movements in a 850 km 2 study area mainly on the Ionian side of the Aspromonte Range, in southern Calabria. LR is a multivariate function that can be utilised, on the basis of a given set of variables, to calculate the probability that a particular phenomenon (for instance, a landslide) is present. In the present study the set of relevant variables includes: rock type, land use, elevation, slope angle, aspect, slope profile curvature down-slope and across-slope. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the LR performance when the procedure is based on the surveying of mass movements in part of the study area. The procedure adopted was GIS-based, with a 10 m DEM square-grid; for slope and curvature calculation, four adjacent cells were grouped to form a nine-point set for mathematical processing. The LR application consists of four steps: sampling, where all relevant characteristics in a part of the area (ca. 27% of the study zone) are assessed; variable parameterisation, where non-parametric variables are transformed into parametric (or semi-parametric) variables (on at least rank scale); model fitting, where regression coefficients are iteratively calculated in the sample area; model application, where the best-fit regression function is applied to the entire study area. This procedure was applied in two ways: first considering all types, then a single type of mass movement. The ground characteristics of the whole study zone were determined. The LR procedure was first tested by extending the sampling and reclassification steps to the whole study zone to find out the best possible fitting regression; the results of this were then compared with ground truth to maximise performance. Afterwards, the results of LR analysis, based on extension of regression formulas obtained also using 40% sampling zones, were compared with those of the best possible one and ground truth. Comparisons were performed by means of a confusion matrix and a simple correlation between expected vs. observed values for grouped variables. The overall results seem promising: for example, if the 27% sample areas are adopted, 94% of the cells where the probability of the existence of any kind of mass movements is between 85.5% and 95%, are actually affected by mass movements. Results are instead less good when attempting to distinguish between types of mass movement.

The effects of weathering in a Mediterranean climate on the mineralogy and microfabric of Paleozoic gneiss of the Sila Massif, Calabria, southern Italy, have been studied. Field observations show highly weathered rock forms a residual soil. Micromorphological and mineralogical properties of bedrock and saprolite show that the weathering process is characterized by at least two major stages, having two distinct rock microfabrics. In the first stage, the morphological features of the original rock are preserved and weathering is manifested mainly by microfracturing, and large portions of the rock remain unaltered. The second stage of weathering involves further development of microcracks and progressive chemical attack on the minerals. This latter stage occurs along both compositional and microstructural discontinuities, with etch pitting of feldspar, and neoformation of clay minerals and ferruginous products replacing feldspar, biotite, and iron-bearing garnet. The determination of quantitative petrographic indices provides a measure of the various stages of weathering.

Deeply weathered plutonic rocks occur widely in the Sila Massif, Calabria, southern Italy. Three representative weathering profiles developed on the hilltops indicate that sand represents more than 50% by weight throughout most of the weathering profile, and silt- and clay-size fractions are also well represented, filling the interstices among corestones. Both sand, and finer fractions of grus, and soil horizons, are thought to be derived from a combination of granular disintegration and chemical decomposition, developed on relatively flat terrains of the Sila massif. These slopes are now experiencing transport-limited morphodynamics, under a montane-modified Mediterranean climate. The depth of the weathered layers, that have suffered little erosional truncation, typically exceed 15 m, and may reach 50–60 m or more. Major isolated or grouped exfoliation boulders are the most common minor landform feature developed on the Sila massif granite. Boulders have developed as a result of spheroidal weathering and by removal of the sandy-textured granite. The Schmidt hammer (SH) test on boulders and corestones, suggests three distinctive degree of weathering (from moderately to completely weathered rock), and that biotite content is the major controlling factor of the granite mechanical behaviour. Understanding of the dynamics of this weathering system is crucial to the interpretation of the complex suite of variables that control landscape evolution of granitoid terrains.

In this study seismic reflection and refraction were used to study the Sackung of Lago (Calabria, Italy). The seismic track is roughly 1200 m long. Seismic-reflection analysis has seldom been used to study mass movements; structurally landslides tend to be extremely complex, and the landslide body is not a good medium for seismic waves, because of dispersion and noise. However, through the use of recent sophisticated software, it has become possible for seismic reflection to obtain good results. In this case study, a package called Seistrex 3 was used. By means of static and topographic corrections, enhanced by filtering and migration, a seismic profile with good resolution of the geometry of layers and faults to depths of 100–400 m was obtained. This study shows that seismic reflection is more useful than seismic refraction for examining the internal structure of a landslide.

Deep-seated mass-movements of different types affect the Pizzotto–Greci slope in northwest Calabria, Italy. The slope is carved out of phyllitic rocks capped by gneissic layers. Its geological structure is extremely complicated by tectonic structures that pervasively cross the slope transversely and downslope. A large-scale gravitational deformation of sackung type affects the slope. On the upslope side a debris-flow source area feeds a large fan constructed by recurrent debris-flow deposits. Aggradation is consequently occurring along the stream at the base of the slope. In order to define the internal structure of the slope for a stability slope model, geological, geostructural, geomorphological, historical and dendrogeomorphologic studies, as well as direct geotechnical logs and indirect geophysical investigations have been carried out over a two-year project financed by the EC Environment Programme. The main aspects of the geological and geomorphological studies and some preliminary geotechnical data are presented here, along with a conceptual model aimed at describing the relationships between the mass-movements on the slope and the construction/destruction stages of the fan at the base of the slope. The model is based on the assumption that aggradation has a stabilising effect on the slope, thus debris-flow activity is reduced and, consequently, destruction of the fan occurs, bringing the slope again towards unstable conditions. The reactivation of mass-movement, however, leads to the reconstruction of the fan and the buttressing effect at the base of the slope is restored. Thus, the process is cyclic and self-regulating.

Dendrogeomorphology, first introduced by Alestalo (1971) has been applied successfully in the spatial and temporal analysis of mass movements by many authors: Shroder (1978) investigated landslides in the Table Cliffs Plateau of Utah finding peak periods of mass-movement reactivation. Many authors (Terasme 1975; Shroder 1978; Hupp 1984; Strunk 1992; Denneler and Schweingruber 1993) found that trees subject to stress due to mass-movement have manifested strong and sudden decreases in ring growth. This effect on tree growth was also found by Orombelli and Gnaccolini (1972) in dating the Vajont landslide in Italy through the study of tilted conifers. Another important kind of information on the causes of landslide movement was pointed out in the papers of Jibson and Keefer (1988) and Filion et al. (1991). Those authors discovered coincidence between the dating of tree disturbances and past strong earthquakes in the Mississippi Valley and Riviere du Gouffre, respectively. Dendrochronology was used by Hupp (1984), Van Asch and Van Steijn (1991) and Strunk (1992) to evaluate the frequency of landslide activity. Kashiwaya et al. (1989) have investigated the relationship between tree-ring width and heavy rainfall in the landslide-prone area of Kobe district in Japan.

Alluvial fans are widespread throughout Calabria, but only a minority display evidence of current activity. In order to understand if and to what extent fan types and their morphology are dependent on the physical environment, including characteristics and processes of the depositional site and drainage basin, we performed a series of discriminant analyses. These analyses used as classification factors the presence or absence of fill in the feeder channel, conditions of confinement by host terrain, the dominant depositional process (debris-flow or sheetflood); and morphometric attributes of fans and drainage basins as the discriminant function variables. in general, fan slope, area and width-length ratio, and, for basins, Melton's ruggedness number and source ratio, were the most useful variables for classification. Best results were obtained by discriminating the types of fan deposits and the presence versus absence of fill in the feeder channel, if the feeder source is singular. Fan morphology is controlled by constructional processes and is tightly linked to basin morphology. On the other hand, fan and basin morphology are also strongly dependent on the rock mechanical characteristics, with hard rocks imparting to the basin a high ruggedness and to fans a high gradient. Larger fans, however, are those where sheetflooding predominates. Results of discriminant analysis based on fan and basin variables are much more significant than those based on fan variables only. This means that the differences between characteristics of fan-and-basin systems are better defined than those between characteristics of fans only. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Geomorphic and structural studies have been carried out on the headwaters of Vallone Colella Torrent, in an area intensely affected by mass-movement phenomena on the Aspromonte massif of southern Italy. Rock types outcropping in the area are mostly gneiss and granitoids, with subordinate presence of metarenites, phyllites, and biotite schists; all lithologies experienced low-grade metamorphism, as indicated by petrographic analysis. Structural surveys, performed at macroscopic and mesoscopic scale, allowed recognition of several sets of discontinuities related to different deformation events. The upper reaches of Vallone Colella Torrent present a large, active landslide zone, the debris materials of which feed the debris flows along the drainage system towards the main valley. Mass-movement phenomena are both shallow and deep-seated; the latter are limited to a sector of the study area, while shallow processes are present throughout the landslide zone. Some considerations of the relationship between tectonics and mass movement are presented, with particular reference to the presence of a large-scale downthrown wedge (bounded by structural surfaces on both sides of the valley), located in the same area affected by deep-seated phenomena.

Extensive afforestation using Pinus and Eucalyptus has taken place in Calabria since the early 1960's to control expansion of calanchi and biancane. In 1978 three small catchments were established near Crotone to monitor the effect of afforestation on hydrological response and sediment yield. In 1992, rainfall simulation experiments were carried out on plots in these catchments to determine more precisely the effect of tree and ground vegetation on surface runoff and erosional response. Most experiments were carried out in a logged catchment with slopes ranging from 20 to 30° and aspects from SW to NE. Results showed complex runoff generation and sediment production, reflecting the effect of microclimate and subtle variations in vegetation on infiltration characteristics. On south-facing slopes with little ground vegetation runoff generation was rapid with runoff coefficients from 27 to 37% and peak sediment concentrations reaching 83.7 g · 1-1. On north-facing slopes with good tree cover, little grass, but continuous leaf litter, runoff coefficients reached 21%, but peak sediment concentration was only 3.6 g · 1-1, while on recently logged north-facing slopes with dense grass cover the highest runoff coefficient was only 5.5% runoff coefficient, and there was virtually no sediment production. Implications of results for forest management and soil conservation are discussed.
