Abstract

The muon telescopes of the Extreme Energy Events (EEE) Project are made of three Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPC). The EEE array is composed, so far, of 59 telescopes and is organized in clusters and single telescope stations distributed all over the Italian territory. They are installed in High Schools with the aim to join research and teaching activities, by involving researchers, teachers and students in the construction, maintenance, data taking and data analysis. The unconventional working sites, mainly school buildings with non-controlled environmental parameters and heterogeneous maintenance conditions, are a unique test field for checking the robustness, the low-ageing features and the long-lasting performance of the MRPC technology for particle tracking and timing purposes. The measurements performed with the EEE array require excellent performance in terms of time and spatial resolution, efficiency, tracking capability and stability. The data from two recent coordinated data taking periods, named Run 2 and Run 3, have been used to measure these quantities and the results are described, together with a comparison with expectations and with the results from a beam test performed in 2006 at CERN., 6 pages, 4 figures, conference RPC 2018

Abstract

The Extreme Energy Events (EEE) experiment is a project by Centro Fermi (Museo Storico della Fisica e Centro Studi e Ricerche “Enrico Fermi”) in collaboration with INFN, CERN and MIUR, designed to study cosmic rays via a network of muon telescopes, based on the Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPC) technology. Due to its wide coverage over the Italian territory (more than 10 ° in latitude and longitude, covering more than 3 x 1 0 5 k m 2 ), the EEE network is the largest MRPC – based system for cosmic rays detection. Each MRPC has 6 gas gaps obtained by a stack of glass plate, spaced 250 μ m each, and is equipped with 24 copper strips. Since its beginning, the EEE MRPCs were filled with a gas mixture of 98% of tetrafluoroethane and 2% of sulfur hexafluoride, but recent restrictions on greenhouse gases have prompted the study of their performance with new gas mixtures. To this aim, extensive tests of tetrafluoropropene and carbon dioxide or sulfur hexafluoride gas mixtures have been carried out.

Abstract

Mass stranding of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) is a rare event in the Mediterranean Sea. In September 2014, a pod of seven sperm whales became stranded along the Adriatic coast of Southern Italy. This is the seventh occurrence of this type since 1555 in this sea basin. Total concentrations of mercury (T-Hg), methylmercury (MeHg) and selenium (Se) were measured from brain, muscle, liver and kidney of three female sperm whales, which died in this event. Analyses showed considerable, age-dependent variations in Hg and Se concentrations in the different organs. The contamination levels of T-Hg in the liver (up to 200 mg kg(-1)) and brain (up to 21 mg kg(-1)) samples were markedly higher than those in the kidney and muscle samples. The liver and brain also showed the highest Se levels. Se:Hg molar ratios ⩾1 were observed in all the organs of the three sperm whales, suggesting that Se could protect the animals from Hg toxicity. The risk of Hg-associated neurotoxicity was assessed by comparing our values to thresholds set for neurotoxicity in mammals, and the role of Se in the detoxification process of T-Hg/MeHg is discussed herein.

Abstract

The Extreme Energy Event (EEE) project is an experiment devoted to the study of high energy Extensive Air Showers (EAS) over a very large area, using an array of muon telescopes. At present the array is composed of more than 50 stations, most of them distributed across the Italian territory, on a total area of around 3 × 1 0 5 km 2 . The telescopes are based on position-sensitive Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPCs) whose readout strips are connected to two TDC (Time-to-Digital Converter) units. Here a novel VME trigger unit for the EEE telescopes is presented, which also includes an embedded GPS receiver for precision timing applications. This new unit gets together, in the same electronic board, the functionalities of different parts of the electronics used up to now in the EEE experiment, and adds new ones, making the whole readout system simpler, more flexible and robust. Details about the trigger/GPS unit, including some measurements of its time resolution, are reported here.

Abstract

The electromagnetic calorimeter of the HERA-B experiment built at the HERA proton accelerator at DESY (Hamburg) is described. The construction characteristics of the detector, of the related front-end, readout, trigger and service electronics are discussed together with the constraints and the motivations which inspired the design philosophy. The detector performance are presented as obtained from the analysis of the data acquired during the HERA-B running period, including calibration procedures and achievements and the electron identification capability exploiting a method, proposed here for the first time, based on the observation of the associated bremsstrahlung γ. Finally, some observed physical signals and a short overview of the main obtained physics results are presented.

Abstract

The goal of the MRPC–detector production for the ALICE TOF is to guarantee the same excellent performances obtained so far with all the prototypes. A set of quality assurance tests has been developed for this purpose; these tests are applied both to the single chamber components and to the assembled detectors. In this paper the results of these tests over a few hundreds MRPCs of the mass production will be presented.

Abstract

The design of the phototube power supply for the HERA- B Electromagnetic Calorimeter is presented. A choice of the solution on the basis of the Cockcroft–Walton voltage multiplier is validated. Schematics developed are discussed. A special section describes the behaviour of the crucial components under irradiation since radiation tolerance becomes one of the most important items in the severe HERA- B radiation environment. Finally, performance achieved is presented.

Abstract

The ALICE Time-of-Flight system will be a large area ( 150 m 2 ) detector made by Multigap RPC (MRPC). The time digitisation is based on the High Performance TDC chip (HPTDC). Tests carried out on board prototypes are discussed, emphasising the optimisation of the effective time resolution of the chip when working in its Very High Resolution Mode. Lab bench tests and test beam results show that a 20 ps resolution has been achieved.

Abstract

Crack initiation and growth in full scale railway axle in A1T mild steel have been studied, under three points rotating bending loading conditions and artificial rainwater as corrosive environment. A surface plastic replication technique has been used along with optical microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy to monitor the environment assisted fatigue at various stages.A modified Murtaza and Akid empirical model has been employed to predict the corrosion fatigue crack growth rates and a reasonable agreement has been found between experimental and calculated lifetime.

Abstract

In recent years, oversampled data converters have been employed for telecommunication and voice applications. Their reduced sensitivity to circuit imperfections makes them more tolerable to changes in technology parameters and mismatch. In order to optimize the set of architecture and parameters, system simulation is necessary to reach high performance. In this paper, the design criteria of a sigma–delta ( Σ – Δ ) converter are indicated adopting both Matlab and VHDL-AMS. The analysis is carried out taking into account circuit parameter variations and investigating aspects such as accuracy, flexibility and performance.

Abstract

Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) is the current treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). The indications of bilevel pressure support ventilation (BIPAP PSV) in OSAS patients remain controversial. The purpose of this investigation was to verify the frequency of prescription of BIPAP PSV in a group of OSAS patients when CPAP was ineffective or not tolerated during titration. The study included 286 consecutive patients > or = 18 years of age referred to two Sleep laboratories for sleep related breathing disorders (SRBD) between December 1994 and November 1995. Of these, 130 patients were enrolled and 105 (88 males, 77 females) with moderate to severe OSAS completed the study and were finally analysed. After a full night diagnostic polysomnography (PSGD), patients had a second full night PSG under nCPAP (PSGT). If nCPAP was not tolerated, or failed to correct breathing abnormalities during sleep, a second PSGT was performed, using a BIPAP PSV. Our study shows that nCPAP (mean 8.5 +/- 2.0 cmH20) was considered a satisfactory therapy in 81 patients (77%). Twenty four (23%) required BIPAP PSV (mean IPAP 13.9 +/- 2.9 cmH20). We found the highest prevalence of BIPAP in patients with OSAS associated to obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) (11 of 17) and in OSAS associated to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (nine of 16). Patients treated with BIPAP PSV were more obese and had a higher PaCO2 and sleep-related desaturations and a lower FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC and PaO2. In conclusion our study shows that CPAP therapy in the effective therapeutic option in the majority of patients with OSAS. There is a subset of patients with OSAS associated to COPD or to OHS in whom BIPAP PSV may be a better treatment modality.

Abstract

Controlled trials of sclerotherapy for the prevention of the first variceal hemorrhage in cirrhotics have given conflicting results. In the present study, 106 cirrhotics were randomized to sclerotherapy (55 patients) or control group (51 patients). Admission criteria were no history of previous variceal bleeding and the presence of high-risk varices, i.e., a variceal score less than or equal to 0 according to Beppu et al. Sclerotherapy sessions were performed at time zero, 7 days, 30 days, and then monthly until eradication. Follow-up endoscopies were performed at 6-month intervals thereafter. Control patients underwent repeat endoscopy at 6-month intervals. Bleeding episodes were treated by sclerotherapy in both groups, whenever possible. Mean follow-up was 24 months. Analysis of the results was performed by the intention-to-treat method. Variceal bleeding occurred in 19 sclerotherapy patients (34.5%) and in 17 controls (35.4%, P = NS). Overall mortality was 34.5% in sclerotherapy patients and 50% in controls (P = NS). Seven of the 19 sclerotherapy patients (36.8%) and 11 of the 17 controls (64.7%) who bled died of hemorrhage (P less than 0.05, log-linear model). It is concluded that prophylactic sclerotherapy does not reduce the incidence of first variceal bleeding in cirrhotics. However, there seems to be a trend toward a lower bleeding-related mortality in sclerotherapy patients than in controls.

remission. Twenty-four of 41 (58.5%) patients needed for systemic steroids, 13/41 (31.7%) for immunosuppressive agents, 8/41 (19.5%) for biological agents and 3/41 (7.3%) required surgery. If we consider smoking status at the discontinuation of the drug, overall in 41 patients who have stopped AZA with at least one year of follow-up after withdrawal, 17/41 (41.5%) were current smokers, 18/41 (43.9%) never smokers and 6/41 (14.5%) former smokers. If we consider among these patients those who maintained remission at 1 year after withdrawal of AZA number of current smoker was greater (5/7 current smokers vs. 1/7 never smoker). This result is consistent with very recent data from literature, which suggest current smoking as a factor delaying relapse after AZA discontinuation (2).
