Abstract

The KOPIO experiment at the BNL AGS required an extracted proton beam in which a debunched, coasting beam is forced between empty longitudinal RF buckets to form microbunches. The goal of the measurement described here was to obtain a low background determination of the fraction of protons coming from the AGS slowly extracted beam at times between microbunches (interbunch extinction). The effect on interbunch extinction of variations in the RF cavity voltage, the momentum dispersion of the beam and the main guide field voltage-ripple was studied. It was found that there exists a broad range of operating parameters that could allow the AGS to produce microbunches with the interbunch extinction better than the KOPIO experiment requirement. Results obtained in this study gave interbunch extinctions better than 10 −5 (1%) of KOPIO's upper limit.

Abstract

The PHENIX magnet system is composed of three spectrometer magnets with warm iron yokes and water-cooled copper coils. The Central Magnet (CM) is energized by two pairs of concentric coils and provides a field around the interaction vertex that is parallel to the beam. This allows momentum analysis of charged particles in the polar angle range from 70° to 110°. The north and south Muon Magnets (MMN and MMS) use solenoid coils to produce a radial magnetic field for muon analysis. They each cover a pseudorapidity interval of 1.1–2.3 and full azimuth. The coils are wound on cylindrical surfaces at the end of large tapered pistons. Each of the three magnets provides a field integral of about 0.8 T -m. The physical and operating parameters of the magnets and their coils are given along with a description of the magnetic fields generated. The geometric, thermal and magnetic analysis leading to the coil design is discussed. The magnetic volumes of the PHENIX magnets are very large and complex, so a new technique was developed to map the fields based on surface measurements of a single field component using single axis Hall probes mounted on a rotating frame. A discussion of the performance of the CM during the first year of PHENIX running is given.

Abstract

We have studied J ψ production in p p collisions at s = 1.8 TeV with the DO detector at Fermilab using μ+μ− data. We have measured the inclusive J ψ production cross section as a function of J ψ transverse momentum, pT. For the kinematic range pT > 8 GeV/c and |η| σ(p p → J ψ + X) · Br ( J ψ → μ + μ − ) = 2.08 ± 0.17( stat) ± 0.46(syst) nb. Using the muon impact parameter we have estimated the fraction of J ψ mesons coming from B meson decays to be fb = 0.35 ± 0.09(stat)±0.10(syst) and inferred the inclusive b production cross section. From the information on the event topology the fraction of nonisolated J ψ events has been measured to be fnonisol = 0.64 ± 0.08(stat)±0.06(syst). We have also obtained the fraction of J ψ events resulting from radiative decays of χc states, fχ = 0.32 ± 0.07(stat)±0.07(syst). We discuss the implications of our measurements for charmonium production processes.

Abstract

The distribution of the transverse energy in jets has been measured in p p collisions at s =1.8 TeV TeV using the DO detector at Fermilab. This measurement of the jet shape is made as a function of jet transverse energy in both the central and forward rapidity regions. Jets are shown to narrow both with increasing transverse energy and with increasing rapidity. Next-to-leading order partonic QCD calculations are compared to the data. Although the calculations qualitatively describe the data, they are shown to be very dependent on renormalization scale, parton clustering algorithm, and jet direction definition and they fail to describe the data in all regions consistently.

Abstract

A search for a heavy charged gauge boson, W′, using the decay channels W′ → eν and W′ → τν → eνν ν is reported. The data used in the analysis were collected by the DO experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron during the 1992-93 p p collider run from an integrated luminosity of 13.9 ± 0.8 pb−1 at s =1.8 TeV . Assuming that the neutrino from W′ decay is stable and has a mass significantly less than mW′, an upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on the cross section times branching ratio for p p → W′ → eν . A W′ with the same couplings to quarks and leptons as the standard model W boson is excluded for mW′

Abstract

We describe the results of beam tests of three uranium-liquid argon calorimeter modules constructed for the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. As part of the calibration procedure, these modules were exposed to beams of electrons, pions and muons between 10 and 150 GeV/c before their installation in the end calorimeter of the completed DO detector. We obtain an electromagnetic sampling resolution of 15.7%/√E and constant term of 0.3%. The hadronic sampling resolution is 45%/√E (degraded to 50%/√E by the effects of upstream material) and the constant term is 4%. The calorimeter is linear to 0.5%, and the electromagnetic to hadronic response ratio is between 1.02 and 1.09 over this range of momenta. For an electron efficiency of 95% we obtain a rejection factor against pions of ∼ 900-3000 for particles in the momentum range between 50 and 150 GeV/c. We also compare our results with the predictions of a detailed Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract

The goal of our study is to evaluate the physics performance of a large liquid argon calorimeter for the SSC engineered to include a realistic support system, cryogenic vessels, signals, and services. The physics performance is dependent on the effect of the dead material on the hermeticity. An integrated design, modeling analysis, and simulation approach is used to allow rapid iteration of the three-dimensional model as well as to provide the ability to trace rays through the design. The results show that a liquid argon calorimeter for the SSC can be designed from a mechanical engineering standpoint and that such a device would achieve excellent physics performance.

Abstract

We present the results of tests made on two types of uranium/liquid argon calorimeter modules, one electromagnetic and one hadronic, constructed for the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. For electrons and hadrons with energies between 10 and 150 GeV, we present measurements of energy resolution, linearity of response, electromagnetic to hadronic response ratio ( e π ), and longitudinal hadronic shower development. We have also investigated the effects of adding small amounts of methane to the liquid argon.

Abstract

The rare decay KL0→π±π0e∓ν has been observed in an experiment using a MWPC spectrometer and a lead glass counter hodoscope. The observed branching ratio Γ(KL0→π±π0e∓ν)Γ(KL0→all)=(6.2±2.0) × 10−5 agrees well with the theoretical prediction. The charged pion angular distribution was found to be consistent with l = 1 as expected from the |ΔI|=½ rule.
