Patients with bipolar disorder (BD) frequently suffer from neurocognitive deficits that can persist during periods of clinical stability. Specifically, impairments in executive functioning such as working memory and in self-processing have been identified as the main components of the neurocognitive profile observed in euthymic BD patients. The study of the neurobiological correlates of these state-independent alterations may be a prerequisite to develop reliable biomarkers in BD.A sample of 27 euthymic BD patients and 25 healthy participants (HC) completed working memory and self-referential functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) tasks. Activation maps obtained for each group and contrast images (i.e., 2-back 1-back/self control) were used for comparisons between patients and HC.Euthymic BD patients, in comparison to HC, showed a higher ventromedial prefrontal cortex activation during working memory, a result driven by the lack of deactivation in BD patients. In addition, euthymic BD patients displayed a greater dorsomedial and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activation during self-reference processing.Pharmacotherapy was described but not included as a confounder in our models. Sample size was modest.Our findings revealed a lack of deactivation in the anterior default mode network (aDMN) during a working memory task, a finding consistent with prior research in BD patients, but also a higher activation in frontal regions within the central executive network (CEN) during self-processing. These results suggest that an imbalance of neural network dynamics underlying external/internal oriented cognition (the CEN and the aDMN, respectively) may be one of the first reliable biomarkers in euthymic bipolar patients.

To determine normal values of fotopic and scotopic retinal sensitivity and foveal fixation obtained by microperimetry, using MP3-S microperimeter (Nidek, Gamagori, Japan), in a healthy population.Observational, crossectional, single centre study. Fotopic and scotopic microperimetry was performed using with a customized 13-point fovea-centered pattern in healthy volunteers without ocular pathology. A intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was performed to evaluate fotopic and scotopic microperimetry reliability.We analyzed 102 eyes of 54 patients with a mean age of 49.8 +/- 15 years old. The fotopic and scotopic mean retinal sensitivity (MRS) was 28.55±3.3dB (95% CI=[27.87-29.23]) and 15.72±1.9dB (95% CI=[15.35-16.09]) respectively, showing a significant statistical difference (p0.05). No differences were found when comparing SRM by gender group. However, when analyzing the SRM by age groups, statistically significant differences were found in both modalities of the test; SRM being higher in the group of subjects under 35 years of age with 30.3±1.7dB in the photopic and 16.3±1.3dB in the scotopic; and lower in the group of older than 65 years with 26.7±2.2dB in the photopic and 13.8±1.8dB in the scotopic with p=0.0001. The reliability analysis of both tests, revealed an excellent reliability of the fotopic microperimetry with a Crombach alpha of 0.958 and a good reliability of 0.841 in scotopic microperimetry.Microperimetry is a test with good reliability both under photopic and scotopic conditions. SRM and fixation stability under photopic and scotopic conditions do not differ according to sex, but it does decrease with age. There is a positive correlation between photopic and scotopic SRM.

Chronic heart failure (CHF) represents a significant cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Metabolic maladaptation has proven to be critical in the progression of this condition. Preclinical studies have shown that irisin, an adipomyokine involved in metabolic regulations, can induce positive cardioprotective effects by improving cardiac remodeling, cardiomyocyte viability, calcium delivery, and reducing inflammatory mediators. However, data on clinical studies identifying the associations between irisin levels and functional imaging parameters are scarce in CHF patients. The objective of this study was to determine the association of irisin levels with cardiac imaging measurements through cardiac magnetic resonance, inflammatory markers, and biochemical parameters in patients with CHF compared with control subjects.Thirty-two subjects diagnosed with CHF and thirty-two healthy controls were evaluated in a cross-sectional study. Serum irisin levels were significantly lower in patients with CHF than in controls. This is the first study to report a significant positive correlation between irisin levels and cardiac magnetic resonance parameters such as left ventricular ejection fraction, fraction shortening, and global radial strain. A negative correlation was demonstrated between irisin levels and brain natriuretic peptide, insulin levels, and Homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance index. We did not observe significant correlations between irisin levels and inflammatory cytokines.Given the importance of fraction shortening and global radial strain as accurate markers of ventricular wall motion, these results support the hypothesis that irisin may play an essential role in maintaining an adequate myocardial wall architecture, deformation, and thickness.

Resumen Antecedentes Se ha descrito una elevada incidencia de tromboembolismo pulmonar (TEP) durante la pandemia por coronavirus. Metodos Estudio retrospectivo unicentrico, con revision de las angiografias pulmonares por tomografia computarizada solicitadas por sospecha de tromboembolismo pulmonar durante dos periodos, del 01 de marzo del 2020 al 31de mayo del 2020 (pandemia), e igual intervalo en 2019 (control). Resultados Se diagnosticaron 22 tromboembolismos pulmonares durante el periodo control y 99 en el pandemico, 74 asociados con COVID-19. El 5,3% de los pacientes hospitalizados con COVID-19 sufrio un tromboembolismo pulmonar, con un retraso entre ambos diagnosticos de 9,1 ± 8,4 dias. Durante la pandemia, los pacientes con tromboembolismo pulmonar tenian menos condiciones predisponentes (tromboembolismo pulmonar previo 5,1 vs. 18,2%, p = 0,05, cirugia previa 2 vs. 35,4%, p = 0,0001, trombosis venosa profunda 11,1 vs. 45,5%, p = 0,0001), y los tromboembolismos pulmonares perifericos eran mas frecuentes (73,5 vs. 50%, p = 0,029). Conclusiones Existe un riesgo incrementado de sufrir un TEP durante la pandemia por SARS-CoV-2, que afecta a pacientes con perfil clinico diferente y causa mas frecuentemente TEP distales.

Background A high incidence of pulmonary embolism has been described during the coronavirus pandemic. Methods This work is a single-center retrospective study which reviewed computed tomography pulmonary angiograms ordered due to suspected pulmonary embolism during two periods: from March 1, 2020 to May 31, 2020 (pandemic) and during the same interval in 2019 (control). Results Twenty-two pulmonary embolisms were diagnosed during the control period and 99 in the pandemic, 74 of which were associated with COVID-19. Of all patients hospitalized with COVID-19, 5.3% had a pulmonary embolism, with a delay between the two diagnoses of 9.1 ± 8.4 days. During the pandemic, patients with pulmonary embolism had fewer predisposing conditions (previous pulmonary embolism 5.1 vs. 18.2%, p = .05; previous surgery 2 vs. 35.4%, p = .0001; deep vein thrombosis 11.1 vs. 45.5%, p = .0001); peripheral pulmonary embolisms were the most frequent (73.5 vs. 50%, p = . 029). Conclusions There is an increased risk of having a pulmonary embolism during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which affects patients with a different clinical profile and more often causes distal pulmonary embolisms.

Resumen La introduccion de tecnicas toracoscopicas asistidas por video en cirugia toracica (VATS) ha permitido realizar un nuevo enfoque en la cirugia toracica. El acceso videotoracoscopico se realiza con pequenas incisiones, preservando al maximo los musculos y los tejidos. En la actualidad, la VATS se considera de eleccion en la mayoria de los procedimientos toracicos, principalmente debido a la menor morbimortalidad asociada. La reseccion pulmonar por VATS presenta reduccion de las fugas de aire prolongadas, arritmias, neumonia, dolor postoperatorio y una disminucion de los marcadores inflamatorios. Esta reduccion de las complicaciones postoperatorias esta vinculada a una reduccion de la estancia hospitalaria, siendo los pacientes de alto riesgo y con poca tolerancia a la toracotomia los principales beneficiarios de esta tecnica. En comparacion con la toracotomia convencional, los?resultados?oncologicos de la cirugia VATS son similares o incluso superiores a los de la cirugia abierta. Este documento, de redaccion multidisciplinar, consensuado por el grupo de trabajo de cirugia toracica de la Sociedad Espanola de Anestesiologia y Reanimacion (SEDAR), de la Sociedad Espanola de Cirugia Toracica (SECT) y la Asociacion Espanola de Fisioterapia (AEF), pretende estandarizar y difundir, con base en la bibliografia mas actual, las mejores pautas de manejo clinico perioperatorio de los pacientes que se someten a una cirugia de reseccion pulmonar por VATS. Cada recomendacion parte de una revision de la literatura disponible y analizada en profundidad por los autores. Con el objetivo de dirigir el curso asistencial que seguira el paciente que se somete a una cirugia pulmonar por VATS, esta guia se organiza inicialmente en el enfoque quirurgico, seguido de los tres puntos clasicos del proceso anestesico. Estos puntos son preoperatorio, intraoperatorio y postoperatorio.

Objective To study the frequency and management of incidental findings in nonenhanced brain MRI of a middle-aged population of type 2 diabetic patients. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the results of 289 brain MRI obtained from subjects between 40–75 years recruited from a previous study. Incidental findings were classified into three categories: (1) Vascular findings; (2) neoplastic findings; and (3) others. On the other side, we made a classification of referral findings. To compare our results, we reviewed the prevalence and evidence about management of both incidental and referral findings in other series. Results We found an overall prevalence of incidental findings of 10.4% (30/289). Incidental findings raised according to age. The most common incidental findings were: 7 vascular (2.4%), 6 calcifications (2.1%), 6 cystic (2.1%) and 5 neoplastic (1.7%) lesions. A percentage of 1.7% (5/289) were referral findings which required further clinical work-up. Conclusion Incidental findings are relatively common in patients with type 2 diabetes. The most frequent are vascular findings, accordance with previous studies. Referral findings are uncommon. Clinical evidence about how to best manage the majority of incidental findings is lacking.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Evaluar la prevalencia y los factores asociados a la infección por SARS-CoV-2 en médicos y enfermeras de centros de atención primaria y residencias de ancianos del área de salud de León (España). Material y métodos: Estudio observacional realizado en una muestra de conveniencia de profesionales de 30 centros de salud y 30 residencias de ancianos, de la Gerencia de Atención Primaria del área de salud de León. Se recogió información del centro de trabajo, tipo de profesión, infección por COVID-19, nivel de exposición, cumplimiento de medidas preventivas, aislamiento (si fue requerido) y test diagnósticos realizados. La determinación de infección fue llevada a cabo mediante prueba de diagnóstico rápido diferenciado (PDRd), usando muestra de sangre capilar. La asociación de las variables con la infección se evaluó mediante regresión logística multivariable no condicional. La prevalencia real de infección por SARS-CoV-2 fue calculada de acuerdo a dos escenarios para el PDRd (Sensibilidad=0,6 y Especificidad=0,985; Sensibilidad=0,8 y Especificidad=1). Resultados: La prevalencia real de infección por SARS-CoV-2 se encontró entre 4,9%-11,0%. La prevalencia observada fue de 5,9%, siendo mayor en trabajadores de residencias de ancianos que de centros de salud de atención primaria (9,5% vs 5,5%). No hubo diferencias estadísticamente significativas por sexo, tipo de profesional, nivel de exposición o cumplimiento de medidas preventivas. Conclusiones: La prevalencia de la infección por el SARS-CoV-2 en este grupo es baja. Un gran número de profesionales siguen siendo susceptibles a la infección por el SARS-CoV-2 y, por lo tanto, medidas de protección deben ser adoptadas, especialmente en los profesionales de las residencias de ancianos.

Background While the proportion of colon cancer occurring in older patients is expected to increase, these patients may have more complications that may lead to serious consequences. The aim of this study was assess postoperative complications and their short-term consequences in colon cancer surgery according to age. Patients and Methods Patients undergoing surgery for primary invasive colon cancer in 22 centers between June 2010 and December 2012 were included. Presurgical and surgical variables were analyzed, and in-hospital major postoperative complications and its most serious consequence (no relevant, transfusion, reintervention, admission to the intensive care unit, or death) were estimated according to age group. Chi-square tests were used to analyze the possible associations between variables and age groups. Results Data from 1976 patients, mean (range) age 68 (24-97) years, 62% men, were analyzed; 52.2% were aged > 69 years and 17.7% were aged > 79 years. The complication rate was 25.3%, reaching 30.9% in those aged ≥ 80 years. Older age was associated with a higher rate of postoperative infections during the hospital stay. The most common surgical complication in patients aged > 85 years was dehiscence of the anastomosis (11.5%). About 5% of patients with major complications died in the hospital (11.1% of those aged 80-84 years and 14.3% aged > 85 years). Among patients aged > 85 years, 38.1% required transfusions. Conclusion Older patients should receive appropriate functional preparation before the intervention, and when the risks of the intervention outweigh the potential benefits, a nonsurgical approach may be preferable.

The prevention of children being overweight/obese is of utmost importance. Parental characteristics play a pivotal role in shaping offspring weight status. This study aimed to examine associations between parental obesity and children's overweight/obesity status, and whether other parental type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk factors can predict children's obesity status.Logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were conducted, using cross-sectional data from a European cohort of 20 151 adults (10 967 mothers; 9184 fathers) and children (n = 10 967) participating in the Feel4Diabetes study. Anthropometric measurements were conducted in children, and overweight/obesity was defined according to the International Obesity Task Force criteria. Parents' T2D risk was assessed applying the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC).After adjusting for all other FINDRISC variables, region and maternal/parental education, maternal (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 2.64; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.18-3.20) and parental (aOR: 3.21; 95% CI, 2.65-3.91) obesity, maternal (aOR: 1.46; 95% CI, 1.23-1.74) and parental (aOR: 1.59; 95% CI, 1.32-1.92) high waist circumference, as well as maternal (aOR: 1.60; 95% CI, 1.27-2.01) and parental (aOR: 1.87; 95% CI, 1.58-2.21) high FINDRISC score, were associated with child overweight/obesity status. Maternal (area under the curve- ROC: 0.638; 95% CI, 0.628-0.647) and paternal body mass index (BMI; area under the curve-ROC: 0.632; 95% CI, 0.622-0.642) were the most accurate in predicting child overweight/obesity status.Among parental risk factors for T2D, maternal/parental overweight/obesity status, central obesity, and high FINDRISC score were the main predictors of childhood overweight/obesity status, with BMI the most accurate. Maternal or paternal BMI is simple to use, and might be useful for the early identification of children at risk of being overweight/obese rather than other T2D factors.

The addiction induced by the misuse of opioids, is not only a public health emergency but also a social and economic welfare. The main therapy is based on opioid antagonists. Oral and injectable naltrexone administration is the most widely used, presenting some inconveniences: poor patient adherence to the oral daily dosing schedule, cases of hepatitis and clinically significant liver dysfunction. This study proposes the in vitro e in vivo evaluation of anti-opioid properties of naloxone loaded-poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid microparticles (NX-MP). In previous studies, NX-MP showed in vitro sustained naloxone release for one week at least. Our results demonstrate the in vitro efficacy of the NX-MP antagonizing for 7 days the morphine effect in SH-SY5Y cells and myenteric plexus-longitudinal muscle preparations isolated from guinea-pig ileum. The in vivo evaluation of the NX-MP was carried out in mice testing the antagonism of the antinociceptive effect of morphine. Results showed that subcutaneous administration of NX-MP blocked the morphine effect. The results of this work suggest that the subcutaneous administration of NX-MP enhances naloxone therapeutic efficacy as non-addictive medication and could be a promising alternative to naltrexone. Furthermore, the dose of NX-MP can be adapted to the patient necessities. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of diet quality with fasting glycemia, insulinemia, and insulin resistance in a cross-sectional sample of adults from families at high risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) from six European countries, taking into account their socioeconomic status (SES).Baseline data from non-diabetic adults from the Feel4 Diabetes study were used and diet was assessed by the Healthy Diet Score (HDS). Insulin resistance (IR) was determined by homeostasis model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR). Sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics were assessed through standardized questionnaires. Multiple linear regressions were adjusted for many confounders, in the total sample and by SES category.In 1980 adults, the third tertile of diet quality was inversely associated with insulin levels (-1.48; 95% confidence interval [CI], -2.34 to 0.62), and HOMA-IR (-0.33; 95% CI, -0.57 to 0.09), yet with no statistically significant results for glucose levels. In the SES subgroup analysis, in the high SES group, both second and third diet score tertiles were inversely associated with insulin levels (-1.81; 95% CI, -2.66 to 0.95) and HOMA-IR values (-0.45; 95% CI -0.69 to 0.21), independent of age, sex, smoking and body mass index. No such associations were observed for glucose levels in the high SES group and for all indices in the low SES group.In adults from families at high risk for T2DM, higher diet quality was negatively associated with fasting insulin levels and IR, only in the high SES group and not in the low SES group. Future larger studies may be able to explore further this association, as well as the potential factors that mitigate its strength in the low SES groups.

The purpose of this study was to examine the anti-predator behavior in pure red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa) and hybrids with chukar partridges (A. rufa × (A. rufa × A. chukar)). A total of 117 birds (66 pure and 51 hybrid partridges; 74 females and 43 males) maintained in outdoor cages were used at a range of 52 to 55 wk of age. Four active fear tests were performed (novel object test, fear of humans test, emergence test, and restraint test) in order to analyze differences between pure and hybrid populations regarding the escape response type (novel object test and fear of humans test), the withdrawal distance (fear of humans test), and the reaction time (emergence test and restraint test). These variables could determine the ability of pure partridges captive to survive when released into the wild for hunting. There were no significant differences in anti-predator behavior in pure and hybrid birds, only one trend was observed in withdrawal distance (P = 0.09), being greater in pure than in hybrids partridges. There was a significant difference between sexes in the response type in the novel object test (P = 0.05); whereby the females came closer to the object than the males. The results of the present study indicate that active anti-predatory behavior was not associated with the genotype. However, since captivity could reduce the active anti-predator behavior, the results could be different if the wild birds that were tested had been sourced from their natural environment. Both sexes had similar active anti-predator behavior, although the males showing less approach behavior to a novel object that could be related to the sex-dimorphic behavior in natural social structure.

Precise determination of the chemical composition and structure of copper sulfides is important to understand the different phase properties. To contribute in this matter, a set of peak-fitting parameters that allows for an accurate reproduction and subsequent quantitative analysis of the X-ray photoemission spectra of copper sulfides films is presented. The results show that the as-deposited brown‑gold film, obtained by chemical solution deposition, is composed of Cu(I) and that it has an amorphous nature with a chemical composition of CuS1.67±0.15, which is related to the composition of a pyrite-type structure. After annealing in a nitrogen-rich atmosphere, the film turned blue-green and shows a mixed Cu(I)/Cu(II) state with photoemission signals characteristic of covellite where the chemical composition was determined to be CuS1.00±0.20. This chemical composition, in addition to the X-ray diffraction results, supports that the as-deposited amorphous copper sulfide film, when annealed, certainly turns into covellite. All the results suggest that the proposed quantitation method is suitable for quantitative analysis of copper sulfides, even when presenting an oxide overlayer.

The chemical solution deposition of Mg(OH)2 thin films on glass substrates and their transformation to MgO by annealing in air is presented. The chemical solution deposition consists of a chemical reaction employing an aqueous solution composed of magnesium sulfate, triethanolamine, ammonium hydroxide, and ammonium chloride. The as-deposited films were annealed at different temperatures ranging from 325 to 500 °C to identify the Mg(OH)2-to-MgO transition temperature, which resulted to be around 375 °C. Annealing the as-deposited Mg(OH)2 films at 500 °C results in homogeneous MgO thin films. The properties of the Mg(OH)2 and MgO thin films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and by circular transmission line model. Results by X-ray diffraction show that the as-deposited thin films have a brucite structure (Mg(OH)2), that transforms into the periclase phase (MgO) after annealing at 500 °C. For the as-deposited Mg(OH)2 thin film, a nanowall surface morphology is found; this morphology is maintained after the annealing to obtain MgO, which occurred with the evident formation of pores on the nanowall surface. The assessed chemical composition from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy yields Mg0.36O0.64 (O/Mg ratio of 1.8) for the as-deposited Mg(OH)2 film, where the expected stoichiometric composition is Mg0.33O0.67 (O/Mg ratio of 2.0); the same assessment yields Mg0.60O0.40 (O/Mg ratio of 0.7) for the annealed thin film, which indicates the obtainment of a MgO material with oxygen vacancies, given the deviation from the stoichiometric composition of Mg0.50O0.50 (O/Mg ratio of 1.0). These results confirm the deposition of Mg(OH)2 films and the obtainment of MgO after the heat-treatment. The energy band gap of the films is found to be 4.64 and 5.10 eV for the as-deposited and the film annealed at 500 °C, respectively. The resistivity of both Mg(OH)2 and MgO thin films lies around 108 Ω·cm.

3-nitro-2H-chromenes and derivatives are compounds with diverse biological activity, among them, new 2-glyco-3-nitro-2H-chromenes have been prepared by one-pot oxa-Michael-Henry-dehydration reactions between carbohydrate-derived nitroalkenes and several salicylaldehydes, using a minimal amount of solvent and DBU as catalyst. The antiproliferative activity of these new compounds has been evaluated against a panel of six human solid tumor cell lines, and compared to pharmacological reference compounds, finding that their activities are in the low micromolar range and that some of them are more effective than the standards.

Introduction Diverting stomata are recommended in patients with low anterior resection and risk factors in order to reduce the severity of anastomotic leaks. Usually, a radiology study is performed prior to the closure of the stoma to detect subclinical leaks. The aim of the present study is to assess the clinical utility of the radiology study. Methods A prospective cohort study of patients undergoing anterior rectal resection for rectal cancer and those who underwent stoma closure without contrast enema. This study was carried out after a retrospective review of radiology study results prior to the closure of the stoma in patients operated from 2007 to 2011. Results Eighty-six patients met the study criteria. Thirteen patients (15.1%) presented pelvic sepsis. Contrast enema before stoma closure was pathological in 8 patients (9.3%). Five out of the 13 patients with pelvic sepsis had a pathological radiological study, compared to only 3 out of the 73 patients without intra-abdominal complications after rectal resection (38.5% vs 4.1%; P=.001). Based on these results, we conducted a prospective study omitting the contrast enema in patients with no postoperative complications. Thirty-eight patients had their stoma closed without a prior radiology study. None of the patients presented pelvic sepsis. Conclusions Radiology studies of the colorectal anastomosis before reconstruction can safely be omitted in patients without pelvic sepsis after the previous rectal resection.

Resumen Introduccion Es recomendable practicar un estoma derivativo en pacientes con reseccion anterior baja y factores de riesgo, para reducir la gravedad de la fuga anastomotica. Habitualmente se realiza un estudio radiologico previo al cierre del estoma para detectar fugas subclinicas. El objetivo del presente estudio es evaluar la utilidad clinica del estudio radiologico. Metodos Estudio prospectivo de una cohorte de pacientes sometidos a reseccion anterior de recto por cancer rectal, y a los que se les realiza cierre del estoma sin enema de contraste. Este estudio se lleva a cabo despues de realizar una revision retrospectiva sobre los resultados del estudio radiologico previo al cierre del estoma en pacientes intervenidos entre 2007 y 2011. Resultados Ochenta y seis pacientes cumplieron los criterios del estudio. Trece pacientes (15,1%) presentaron sepsis pelvica. El enema con contraste antes del cierre del estoma fue patologico en 8 pacientes (9,3%). Cinco de los 13 pacientes con sepsis pelvica mostraron un estudio radiologico patologico, en comparacion con solo 3 de 73 pacientes sin complicaciones intraabdominales despues de la reseccion del recto (38,5% vs 4,1%; p = 0,001). Basandonos en estos resultados, realizamos un estudio prospectivo omitiendo el enema con contraste en pacientes con curso postoperatorio no complicado. A 38 pacientes se les cerro el estoma sin estudio radiologico previo. Ningun paciente presento sepsis pelvica. Conclusiones El estudio radiologico de la anastomosis colorrectal antes de la reconstruccion del transito puede omitirse con seguridad en los pacientes sin sepsis pelvica ni ileo paralitico tras la reseccion anterior de recto.

The adding of wood pieces together with small amounts of oxygen to simulate the processes for aging red wine in barrels is the most common alternative to oak barrels. The evolution of these wines aged with alternatives in bottle has not been examined in depth as they are considered to be for rapid consumption. This paper presents for the first time the evolution in bottle for 10 years of the same wine aged in oak barrels and subjected to diverse alternative aging processes using different woods. Wines subjected to this alternative have evolved after 10 years in the bottle in a similar way to those aged in barrels. Wines aged in barrels retain significantly higher levels of blue tonalities than those treated with chips + FMOX and the loss of compounds responsible for red is almost double in wines treated with alternatives than in those aged in barrels. Wines aged in barrels showed higher concentrations of cis- and trans-whiskylactones than those treated with alternative products. In both the cis/trans whisky lactone ratio has been around 2 in wines aged in French oak, and over 5 in wines aged in American oak. A process for the chemical deposition of good-quality SnS thin films is presented. This process consists of a careful substrate sensitization; the placement of the substrate in a particular angle in the reaction solution; and the use of an aqueous reaction solution composed of stannous chloride, ethanol, triethanolamine, thioacetamide, and ammonium hydroxide. This process enables the deposition of good-quality SnS thin films that are homogenous and strongly adhered to the substrate, even at a temperature of 70 °C. The effect of reaction temperature (40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, and 70 °C) on the properties of the SnS thin films was studied by means of X-ray diffraction (including a Rietveld analysis), scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, optical spectroscopy, and current photo-response. Rietveld analysis shows the presence of two tin sulfide orthorhombic phases (α-SnS and β-SnS) and a platelet-like microstructure with less than 20% of the total volume oriented in the (111) plane. Surface morphology confirms that grains have platey-like habits. It is found that with increasing reaction temperature the thin films increase in thickness, become more crystalline, and the conductivity photo-response improves, making the prepared SnS thin films suitable for optoelectronic applications.

Producción Científica, Different oak species or origins have been studied to find an alternative to traditional ones and Quercus humboldtii from Colombia is a candidate. Some studies analyse the composition of this oak, but no work has been found to study its use for wine treatment. The aim was to evaluate volatile composition of toasted Q. humboldtii oak chips and the wines treated with these chips. To evaluate its oenological potential Q. alba and Q. petraea have been included in this trial. The wines were subjected to a sensory analysis. Results indicated that oak chips and wines macerated for 90 days with toasted Colombian chips exhibited higher 5-methylfurfural, guaiacol, trans-isoeugenol and syringol concentrations than others, while the furfural and cis-β-methyl-γ-octalactone content was lower. Sensory analysis showed that the wines treated with Colombian oak presented more notes of smoked and less of coconut.
