Abstract

Understanding the processes guiding the confinement of adsorbed H2 in different porous structures is vital for the development of adsorbents for effective cryo-adsorptive H2 storage systems. Quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) is applied over a wide range of timescales (0.2 ps – 150 ps) to determine different self-diffusion mechanisms of H2 adsorbed in a carbide (synthesized from TiC via the sol-gel method) derived carbon (sol-gel TiC-CDC) adsorbent with hierarchical porous structure. The bulk and porous structure is characterized by gas adsorption, Raman spectroscopy, and wide-angle X-ray scattering methods. Sol-gel TiC-CDC belongs to a series of CDCs that have been previously characterized and where the self-diffusion of adsorbed H2 has been investigated with QENS. Sol-gel TiC-CDC is very mesoporous, has relatively high stacking (2.76 graphenic layers per stack), and small interlayer spacing of graphenic sheets (3.43 Å) in comparison to other CDCs in the series, thus, being a well-ordered highly porous CDC. Restricted rotational self-diffusion of adsorbed H2 is determined in ultramicropores (pore width, w, < 7 Å) and translationally self-diffusing H2 adsorbed in multilayers across multiple timescales are determined in micro- and mesopores (7 Å < w < 500 Å). The microporous and graphenic structure of the CDC does not remarkably affect the self-diffusion of H2 at high surface coverages. The simultaneous determination of adsorbed H2 motions across different timescales allows to analyze the influence of micro- and mesopores under H2 loading conditions, which are close to the ones used in technical applications and are vital for adsorbent optimization., QC 20240130

Abstract

In this work, we propose hydroxyapatite (HA) as a hard template to unlock the porosity of Fe-N-C catalyst materials. Using HA, a naturally occurring mineral that can be removed with nitric acid, in the synthesis generates a catalyst material with a unique porous network comprising abundant pores and interparticle cavities ranging from 10 to 3000 nm. Hard templating with HA alongside ZnCl2 as a micropore former results in a Fe-N-C catalyst based on naturally abundant peat with excellent oxygen reduction activity in alkaline conditions. A half -wave potential of 0.87 V vs RHE and a peak power density of 1.06 W cm-2 were achieved in rotating ring disk electrode and anion exchange membrane fuel cell experiments, respectively, rivaling the performance of other state-of-the-art platinum-free catalysts presented in the literature. Abstract

Virucidal filter materials were prepared by electrospinning a solution of 28 wt % poly(vinylidene difluoride) in N,N-dimethylacetamide without and with the addition of 0.25 wt %, 0.75 wt %, 2.0 wt %, or 3.5 wt % Cu(NO3)2 · 2.5H2O as virucidal agent. The fabricated materials had a uniform and defect free fibrous structure and even distribution of copper nanoclusters. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that during the electrospinning process, Cu(NO3)2 · 2.5H2O changed into Cu2(NO3)(OH)3. Electrospun filter materials obtained by electrospinning were essentially macroporous. Smaller pores of copper nanoclusters containing materials resulted in higher particle filtration than those without copper nanoclusters. Electrospun filter material fabricated with the addition of 2.0 wt % and 3.5 wt % of Cu(NO3)2 · 2.5H2O in a spinning solution showed significant virucidal activity, and there was 2.5 ± 0.35 and 3.2 ± 0.30 logarithmic reduction in the concentration of infectious SARS-CoV-2 within 12 h, respectively. Abstract

The self diffusion mechanisms for adsorbed H2 in different porous structures are investigated with in situ quasi elastic neutron scattering method at a temperature range from 50 K to 100 K and at various H2 loadings. The porous structures of the carbon materials have been characterized by sorption analysis with four different gases and the results are correlated with previous in depth analysis with small angle neutron scattering method. Thus, an investigation discussing the effect of pore shape and size on the nature of adsorbed H2 self diffusion is performed. It is shown that H2 adsorbed in nanometer scale pores is self diffusing in two distinguishable timescales. The effect of the pore, pore wall shape and corrugation on the fraction of confined and more mobile H2 is determined and analyzed. The increased corrugation of the pore walls is shown to have a stronger confining effect on the H2 motions. The difference of self diffusional properties of the two H2 components are shown to be smaller when adsorbed in smoother walled pores. This is attributed to the pore wall corrugation effect on the homogeneity of formed adsorbed layers

29. Predictive control and coordination for energy community flexibility with electric vehicles, heat pumps and thermal energy storage

Abstract

Electrification of private transportation and residential heating is a potential action to decrease significantly carbon emissions. However, the lack of coordination of such emerging loads can increase stress on the power distribution grid. To this end, this paper proposes a two-stage energy management strategy, to enhance the flexibility of energy communities. First, an optimization algorithm-based model predictive control (MPC) is developed for home energy management systems (HEMS) to schedule electric vehicles (EVs) for charging and discharging in cooperation with heat pump and thermal energy storages. The objective is to reduce electricity bills and EV battery degradation costs while maintaining thermal demand. Second, the predictive coordination based on the nonlinear AC optimal power flow approach is applied to enhance the grid flexibility under a community energy management system scheme. To validate the performance of the proposed method, we develop a co-simulation framework by implementing the optimization algorithm and simulation scenarios in a Python Environment and modelling the electricity grid in the PowerFactory-DIgSILENT, which are linked together. Extensive numerical simulations are carried out under the active demand response program-based hourly electricity pricing and different weather data in Sweden. The results show that the proposed method can reduce operating costs and enhance the energy flexibility of the energy community. Abstract

Cardiomyocytes play key roles during cardiogenesis, but have poorly understood features, especially in prenatal stages. Here, we characterized human prenatal cardiomyocytes, 6.5-7 weeks post-conception, by integrating single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, and ligand-receptor interaction information. Using a computational workflow developed to dissect cell type heterogeneity, localize cell types, and explore their molecular interactions, we identified eight types of developing cardiomyocyte, more than double compared to the ones identified in the Human Developmental Cell Atlas. These have high variability in cell cycle activity, mitochondrial content, and connexin gene expression, and are differentially distributed in the ventricles, including outflow tract, and atria, including sinoatrial node. Moreover, cardiomyocyte ligand-receptor crosstalk is mainly with non-cardiomyocyte cell types, encompassing cardiogenesis-related pathways. Thus, early prenatal human cardiomyocytes are highly heterogeneous and develop unique location-dependent properties, with complex ligand-receptor crosstalk. Abstract

Summary Background Use of third-generation cephalosporins, such as cefotaxime, is associated with an increased risk of selection for antimicrobial resistance, so alternative antibiotics need to be considered. The aim of the present study was to evaluate intestinal colonisation with third-generation cephalosporin-resistant pathogens following use of temocillin—an alternative antibiotic to cefotaxime that is potentially less prone to disturbing the intestinal microbiota—in empirical treatment of febrile urinary tract infection (UTI). Methods We did a randomised, multicentre, superiority, open-label phase 4 trial in patients who had been admitted to inpatient care in 12 Swedish hospitals with suspected or diagnosed febrile UTI (complicated or uncomplicated). To meet inclusion criteria, a patient was required to have at least one sign or symptom of pyelonephritis (ie, flank pain; costovertebral angle tenderness; and changes to urinary frequency or urgency or dysuria), a fever of 38·0°C or higher, and a positive urine dipstick (for nitrites, white blood cells, or both). Participants were also required to have an indication for intravenous antibiotic treatment. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive either 2 g temocillin or 1–2 g cefotaxime, by local investigators opening consecutive sealed randomisation envelopes that were generated centrally in advance. Both drugs were administered intravenously every 8 h. The trial was open label for investigators and patients, but those doing the microbiological analyses were masked to the groups. Participants were treated with antibiotics for 7–10 days (or up to 14 days if they had bacteraemia), at least 3 days of which were on the study drug; at day 4 and later, participants who were showing improvement could be given an oral antibiotic (ciprofloxacin, ceftibuten, cefixime, or co-trimoxazole). Patients not showing improvement were regarded as having treatment failures. Rectal swabs were collected at three timepoints: at baseline (before the first dose), after the last dose of study drug, and 7–10 days after treatment stopped. The composite primary outcome was colonisation with Enterobacterales with reduced susceptibility to third-generation cephalosporins, or colonisation with toxin-producing Clostridioides difficile, or both, to evaluate disturbance of the intestinal microbiota. The study is registered in the EU Clinical Trials Register (EudraCT 2015-003898-15). Findings Between May 20, 2016, and July 31, 2019, 207 patients were screened for eligibility, of whom 55 patients were excluded. 152 participants were randomly assigned to groups: 77 (51%) patients received temocillin, 75 (49%) patients received cefotaxime. The composite primary endpoint was met by 18 (26%) of 68 participants receiving temocillin versus 30 (48%) of 62 patients receiving cefotaxime (risk difference −22% [95% CI −42% to −3%]), showing superiority of temocillin versus cefotaxime (ie, less disturbance of the intestinal microbiota). 43 adverse events were reported in 40 (52%) of 77 patients in the temocillin group, versus 46 adverse events in 34 (45%) of 75 patients in the cefotaxime group. Most events were of mild to moderate severity. 21 (27%) patients in the temocillin and 17 (23%) patients in the cefotaxime group had an adverse event that was considered to be associated with the study drug. Interpretation Temocillin was found to be less selective than cefotaxime of Enterobacterales with reduced susceptibility to third-generation cephalosporins, and it could therefore be a favourable alternative in the empirical treatment of febrile UTI. Use of this antibiotic could reduce hospital transmission and health-care-associated infections by these pathogens. Funding Public Health Agency of Sweden.

However, the factors and mechanisms underlying inter-individual variability in the vulnerability to develop psychopathology-related symptoms in response to inflammation are not well characterized. Herein, we aimed at investigating morphological brain regions central for interoception and emotion regulation, and if these are associated with acute inflammation-induced sickness and anxiety responses. Methods Systemic inflammation was induced using an intravenous injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) at a dose of 0.6 ng/kg body weight in 28 healthy individuals, while 21 individuals received an injection of saline (placebo). Individuals’ gray matter volume was investigated by automated voxel-based morphometry technique on T1-weighted anatomical images derived from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Plasma concentrations of TNF-α and IL-6, sickness symptoms (SicknessQ), and state anxiety (STAI-S) were measured before and after the injection. Results A stronger sickness response to LPS was significantly associated with a larger anterior insula gray matter volume, independently from increases in cytokine concentrations, age, sex and body mass index (R2 = 65.6%). Similarly, a greater LPS-induced state anxiety response was related to a larger anterior insula gray matter volume, and also by a stronger increase in plasma TNF-α concentrations (R2 = 40.4%). Discussion Anterior insula morphology appears central in the sensitivity to develop symptoms of sickness and anxiety in response to inflammation, and could thus be one risk factor in inflammation-related psychopathologies. Because of the limited sample size, the current results need to be replicated.
