International audience; Target properties such as thickness and composition are essential ingredients in nuclear physics experiments, therefore, dedicated analyses to evaluate them before and/or after the measurement are often performed. In some experimental techniques, the exploited detectors allow for the evaluation of these properties on-line, i.e. directly during the experiment. In this paper, we report on the use of analysis methods coming from the Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy technique to obtain on-line information on the target used in a nuclear physics experiment. This measurement was performed at INFN LNL by exploiting the low-energy Coulomb excitation technique. The results have been compared with an independent Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy analysis of the same target performed at INFN LABEC in Florence.

The GALILEO array is a high-efficiency γ -ray spectrometer, resident at the Legnaro National Laboratory (LNL)in Italy, and it is currently used in combination with the Si-ball EUCLIDES for the detection of charged-particles. The combined setup was used in the 6 Li+89Y experiment with incident energies of 22 MeV and 34 MeV to investigate the influence of breakup and transfer of weakly bound projectile on the fusion process. Using the coincidence by the charged particles and γ -rays, the different reaction channels can be clearly identified and the different reaction mechanisms can be clearly studied. It is shown that this facility can be used well to explore the fusion reaction mechanisms induced by weakly bound nuclei.

The MUGAST-AGATA-VAMOS set-up at GANIL combines the MUGAST highly-segmented silicon array with the state-of-the-art AGATA array and the large acceptance VAMOS spectrometer. The mechanical and electronics integration copes with the constraints of maximum efficiency for each device, in particular {\gamma}-ray transparency for the silicon array. This complete set-up offers a unique opportunity to perform exclusive measurements of direct reactions with the radioactive beams from the SPIRAL1 facility. The performance of the set-up is described through its commissioning and two examples of transfer reactions measured during the campaign. High accuracy spectroscopy of the nuclei of interest, including cross-sections and angular distributions, is achieved through the triple-coincidence measurement. In addition, the correction from Doppler effect of the {\gamma}-ray energies is improved by the detection of the light particles and the use of two-body kinematics and a full rejection of the background contributions is obtained through the identification of heavy residues. Moreover, the system can handle high intensity beams (up to 108 pps). The particle identification based on the measurement of the time-of-flight between MUGAST and VAMOS and the reconstruction of the trajectories is investigated., Comment: 13 pages, 18 figures

β-Ga 2 O 3 nanowires were grown by thermal oxidation of GaSe single crystal surface under a mixture of argon–air flow, without the presence of a catalyst or foreign substrate. The nanowires were obtained after annealing GaSe surface at different temperatures (720 °C, 850 °C and 930 °C) for 5 h and they were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and selected area diffraction pattern. The lengths of the nanowires varied in the range 50–180 nm, while the typical diameters of the nanowires were in the range 60–90 nm. A possible mechanism has been proposed in order to explain the growth of oxide nanowires.

The inclusive transverse momentum (p(T)) distributions of primary charged particles are measured in the pseudo-rapidity range vertical bar eta vertical bar 30 GeV/c. In peripheral collisions (70-80%), only moderate suppression (R-AA approximate to 0.6-0.7) and a weak p(T) dependence is observed. The current work demonstrates the first reported successful synthesis of unique alpha-TeO2 hybrid microstructures through thermal oxidation of Te microtubes in a horizontal tube furnace at different temperatures in the range 220-470 degrees C, under oxygen flow. The obtained microstructures were carefully characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. They exhibited characteristic morphologies with porous scaffold microtubes covered along their whole length with pearl-like microwires. The possible formation mechanism of the obtained microstructures was also discussed.

Angular correlations between unidentified charged trigger (t) and associated (a) particles are measured by the ALICE experiment in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV for transverse momenta 0.25 p(T)(a). The shapes of the pair correlation distributions are studied in a variety of collision centrality classes between 0 and 50% of the total hadronic cross section for particles in the pseudorapidity interval |eta| 0.8, and are referred to as "long-range correlations". Fourier components V-n Delta equivalent to are extracted from the long-range azimuthal correlation functions. If particle pairs are correlated to one another through their individual correlation to a common symmetry plane, then the pair anisotropy V-n Delta (p(T)(t), p(T)(a)) is fully described in terms of single-particle anisotropies v(n)(p(T)) as V-n Delta(p(T)(t), p(T)(a)) = v(n)(p(T)(t))v(n)(p(T)(a)). The ALICE experiment at the LHC has studied inclusive J/psi production at central and forward rapidities in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV. In this Letter, we report on the first results obtained detecting the J/psi through the dilepton decay into e(+)e(-) and mu(+)mu(-) pairs in the rapidity ranges vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9 and 2.5 < y < 4, respectively, and with acceptance down to zero PT. In the dielectron channel the analysis was carried Out on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity L-int = 5.6 nb(-1) and the number of signal events is N-J/psi = 352 +/- 32 (stat.) +/- 28 (syst.): the corresponding figures in the dimuon channel are L-int = 15.6 nb(-1) and N-J/psi = 1924 +/- 77 (stat.) +/- 144 (syst.). The measured production cross sections are sigma(J/psi) (vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9) = 10.7 +/- 1.0 (stat.) +/- 1.6 (syst.)(-2.3)(+1.6) (syst.pol.) mu b and sigma(J/psi) (2.5 < y < 4) = 6.31 +/- 0.25 (stat.) +/- 0.76 (syst.)(-1.96)(+0.95) (syst.pol.) mu b. The first measurement of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in central Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S = 2.76 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider is presented. We observe a growing trend with energy now not only for the longitudinal and the outward but also for the sideward pion source radius. Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of primary charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV have been measured by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC. The data are presented for central and peripheral collisions, corresponding to 0-5% and 70-80% of the hadronic Pb-Pb cross section. The measured charged particle spectra in |eta| < 0.8 and 0.3 < p(T) < 20 GeV/c are compared to the expectation in pp collisions at the same root s(NN), scaled by the number of underlying nucleon-nucleon collisions. The comparison is expressed in terms of the nuclear modification factor R-AA. The result indicates only weak medium effects (R-AA approximate to 0.7) in peripheral collisions. In central collisions, R-AA reaches a minimum of about 0.14 at p(T) = 6-7 GeV/c and increases significantly at larger p(T). The measured suppression of high-p(T) particles is stronger than that observed at lower collision energies, indicating that a very dense medium is formed in central Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. The inclusive charged particle transverse momentum distribution is measured in proton-proton collisions at root s = 900 GeV at the LHC using the ALICE detector. The measurement is performed in the central pseudorapidity region (vertical bar eta vertical bar (INEL) = 0.483 +/- 0.001 (stat.) +/- 0.007 (syst.) GeV/c and (NSD) = 0.489 +/- 0.001 (stat.) +/- 0.007 (syst.) GeV/c, respectively. The data exhibit a slightly larger than measurements in wider pseudorapidity intervals. The analysis reported in this work has been performed to characterise PM10 concentration measured in an urban background site in Lecce (Apulia region, Italy). PM10 concentration and its inorganic chemical composition have been studied using three procedures: a qualitative analysis of the correlation coefficients between the different species and of the crustal enrichment factor; the cluster analysis (CA) and the principal component analysis (PCA). The results of the three procedures are in good agreement. The five groups identified by the CA correspond to the five principal components obtained with the PCA and they reflect the results qualitatively inferred using the two-species correlation coefficients. The CA results helped in putting in evidence a correlation between Ni, V and sulphate that was less evident in the PCA. The relative abundance of V is larger with wind from the N-NW directions where the main industrial sites of the region are located. This suggests the presence of anthropogenic inorganic secondary aerosol generated by a common source of V and SO2 that are likely the industrial releases and the ship emissions. The absolute PCA (APCA) allowed the quantitative apportionment of the five components observed: crustal matter (49.5%), secondary inorganic aerosol (24.1%), marine aerosol (6.3%), traffic (16.5%), and industrial (2.1%). Observed PM10 concentration clearly shows a seasonal pattern, opposite to the one observed in the northern and central Italy, with average PM10 larger in the warm season (spring and summer) with respect to the cold season as a consequence of the increase of crustal matter contribution likely due to the intrusion of African dust. These intrusions are more frequent in the warm season and have an influence on daily PM10 concentrations variable between 6% and 120% in this site. Correlation with meteorological data indicates that the more intense cases of intrusions of African dust happen with wind blowing from the SW direction. Average PM10 concentration decreases of about 23% during precipitation. The decrease is mainly due to the decrease in crustal matter contribution and secondary inorganic aerosol. The sum of the other three sources is almost not changing during precipitation.

Tellurium tubular crystals were grown by direct thermal evaporation of tellurium metal in an inert atmosphere on quartz substrates at ambient pressure without employing any catalyst. Tellurium powder was evaporated by heating at 600 degrees C and was condensed at a substrate temperature of 300-350 degrees C in the downstream of argon gas at a flow rate of 100 mL/min. The structure and chemical composition of the as-synthesized samples were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-rays microanalysis and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy images and X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the as-synthesized Te had a tubular single-crystalline morphology with a hexagonal cross-section. The Te microtubes were typically 0.5-6 mm long, 30-70 mu m in external diameter, and 5-20 mu m thick. NO(2) gas-sensing properties of the Te microtubes at room temperature were also investigated. In this paper a low-vacuum scanning electron microscope (SEM) coupled with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX) was used to investigate the alteration processes that occur on silica–soda–lime glass exposed to soil materials and dated from XI to second half of XIII sec. The chemical data were collected for altered glass gel and fresh glass. In order to study the influence of chemical composition on weathering process, 16 glasses have been selected on the basis of the chemical characterization and on the basis of the different corrosion processes present on the fragments. Six selected samples had been produced with the use of natron as fluxer and 10 samples with the use of plant ash as fluxer. The analysed pieces come from Siponto excavations (Foggia, Italy) and they include feet and rims of chalices, fragments of lamps and of globular bottles.

Summary Background In 5%–10% of patients with of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), the Philadelphia chromosome (Ph) is not identified, despite the presence of the associated BCR-ABL molecular abnormality (Ph-negative, BCR-ABL-positive CML) because of sub-microscopic rearrangements. Patients and methods Six patients with Ph-negative, BCR-ABL-positive CML were investigated. The Ph chromosome detection via fluorescence in situ hybridization after 24-hour mitotic arrest of bone marrow cultures resulting in several hundreds of metaphases (hypermetaphase FISH or HMF) was useful in explaining the nature of the six cases. Results Four patients had a low frequency of Ph-positive cells by HMF (5.7%, 4.8%, 3.9%, 0.2%), i.e., a typical Ph translocation. However, two cases involved a 9q34 inserted into chromosome 22q11 (74.2% and 92%), without a deletion from chromosome 22 and reciprocal translocation onto 9, i.e., not a typical Ph translocation. The pattern of UBCR gene rearrangement was characterized by the same genomic recombination of 5-BCR and c-ABL, both in the four cases of typical translocation (9;22) and in the two cases of insertion of 9q34 into chromosome 22qll. Conclusions The HMF identified two different bases for Ph-negative, BCR-ABL-positive cells in CML - presence of low frequency of cells with typical Ph translocations or presence of cells with ABL insertions into the BCR gene on chromosome 22.
