The purpose of this paper is to determine how to place students in the most appropriate club, to save training time and expenses, and maximize club performance. To this end, this research utilizes the example of the color guard club at Chienkuo Technology University (CTU). First, the authors researched the characteristics needed to be a color guard member. Second, a series of tests for measuring these characteristics was designed. Third, the authors administered the tests to all the club members and recorded the results. Fourth, after the club members had received one year of training, the authors ran regression analysis by using data from the tests of those who successfully passed the training. From this, the authors obtained a regression model. The authors then ran logistic regression analysis and discriminant analysis on the test data of all initial color guard club members, including those who eventually passed the training and those who eventually withdrew, to establish screening norms. Last, using factor analysis, the authors found the latent factors. These factors, along with the screening norms, can serve as a foundation for future selection of color guard members. This process of selecting club members scientifically may be adopted by other clubs in order to match students and clubs most effectively.

A unique clinical syndrome has been described in which patients have chronic oral ulceration and autoantibodies to nuclei of stratified squamous epithelium. We have characterized the autoantibodies from patient sera and found that the major autoantigen is a 70 kDa epithelial nuclear protein. Sequencing of the cDNA for this protein, chronic ulcerative stomatitis protein, revealed it to be homologous to the p53 tumor suppressor and to the p73 putative tumor suppressor, and to be a splicing variant of the KET gene. The p53-like genes, p73 and the several KET splicing variants, are recently described genes of uncertain biologic and pathologic significance. This study provides the first clear association of a p53-like protein with a disease process.

Several components in the machinery mediating the import of nuclear-encoded chloroplastic precursor proteins have been identified. One of the components, OEP34, is an outer membrane protein and is synthesized at its mature size in the cytosol without a distinguishable chloroplast-targeting signal. To address the question of how components in the transport machinery are imported to chloroplasts themselves, we first identified the chloroplastic outer membrane-targeting signal of OEP34. Using an Arabidopsishomologue of the originally isolated pea OEP34, we show that the outer membrane-targeting signal of OEP34 is located within a 10-amino acid hydrophobic core of the C-terminal membrane anchor. Interestingly, this signal can target a passenger protein to the chloroplastic outer membrane no matter whether it is placed at the N or C terminus of a passenger protein. Proper insertion of fusion proteins into the outer membrane requires in addition the C-terminal hydrophilic region following the hydrophobic core. Furthermore, passenger proteins fused to the C terminus of the targeting/insertion signal were most likely imported into the intermembrane space of the envelope.

Background: Clear cell papulosis is a newly described disease. Since the first report in 1987, no other cases have been reported. Objective: Our purpose was to describe three more newly identified cases that further characterize this disease. Methods: Formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded biopsy specimens were used for histochemical and immunohistochemical studies. Results: The three patients included two boys and, for the first time, a girl. All three had multiple white papules on the lower part of the abdomen, with or without scattered lesions along the milk lines bilaterally. The main histopathologic finding was the presence of clear cells scattered mainly among the basal cells of the acanthotic epidermis. The clear cells were variably stained by mucicarmine, colloidal iron, alcian blue (pH 2.5), periodic acid-Schiff, the anticytokeratin antibody AE1, carcinoembryonic antigen, epithelial membrane antigen, and gross cystic disease fluid protein-15. Conclusion: Clear cell papulosis is a unique clinicopathologic entity. The clear cells were confirmed to be sweat gland secretory cells by their positive immunostaining with gross cystic disease fluid protein-15. The latter was also present in eccrine sweat gland coil cells. However, whether the clear cells were eccrine or apocrine secretory cells could not be determined.

A computer program ESOLAN has been developed for HPGe detector peak-efficiency calibration in various counting geometries. The program was written for use in personal computers(PCs). Experiments designate that the efficiency calibration, with the aid of this program, can be constructed with an overall uncertainty of about 3% or lower for gamma rays ranging from 80 KeV to 3 MeV.

From Ta Fund Conf Repr W A 42-year-old woman presented with a 9-month history of increasing hyperpigmentation and recurrent vesicles. The physical examination revealed erosions, healing crusts, scarring, milia, mottled hyperpigmentation, and remnants of vesicles and blisters on the dorsal surfaces of her hands, nose, V-neck area, and face (Fig 1). She also developed facial hypertrichosis that was most pronounced on the zygomatic skin (Fig 2). A direct immunofluorescence study of the skin was performed (Fig 3, A; immunoglobulin G), and her urine was examined with ultraviolet light (Fig 3, B). Her serum iron and ferritin levels were elevated. Lamotrigine had been added for her epilepsy 10 months earlier.
