21. Silica nanoparticles as a high-performance filtrate reducer for foam fluid in porous media

Abstract

During the fracturing operations for oils and gases, not only the oil and gas reservoirs, but also the nearby civil aquifers are often polluted by the invasion of fracturing fluid filtrates. In this study, we investigated the potential of silica nanoparticles as a high-performance filtrate reducer for a foam fluid in a porous media. First, the three factors affecting filtration reduction using nanoparticles, i.e., surface rheology, foam slipping, and foam stability, were described. Then, the foam filtration through a porous media in the core was measured using a dynamic fluid-loss device, and the effects of foam quality, pressure drop, and core permeability on the performance of the filtrate reducer were evaluated. The difficulty of bubbles flowing from a throat to a pore in a porous media was described by resistance gradient coefficient Cf, which is a combination of surface tension and viscoelastic modulus and increases by adding nanoparticles. Nanoparticles improve the roughness of the SiO2/sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate foam film surface, thus increasing the slipping resistance Fslip when foams flow on the wall of a throat in a porous media. For the foams in a porous media, the diffusion of bubbles decreased in the presence of nanoparticles, and the growth rate of gas bubble size also decreased, thus increasing the foam resistance to gas channeling. The results of core filtration tests indicate that the fluid-loss-control properties increased with foam quality ranging from 0 to 85%, and the negative effects of pressure drop and permeability increase to foam filtration were weakened by adding SiO2 nanoparticles. Thus, silica nanoparticles can be used as a high-performance filtrate reducer for a foam fluid in a porous media.

Abstract

Prussian blue (PB) and its analogues (PBAs) have been considered as promising cathodes for room temperature sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of their rigid open framework and low-cost synthesis. Herein, we have synthesized slight-etching PB cubes with low amounts of coordinated water and [Fe(CN)6] vacancies using an optimized hydrothermal method with the aid of acid. Interestingly, synchronous crystal growth and etching processes are observed, accompanied by recrystallization behaviors during the etching process. With the increasing acid amount, yield of the as-prepared PB improves greatly. The acid etching mechanism is further clarified. Notably, such one-step acid-etching hydrothermal approach can realize the rational composition and architecture design of PB. The correlation between physical properties and cell performance of PB is systematically investigated. The optimized PB cubes with slight surface etching deliver a high reversible specific capacity of 99 mA h g−1, a capacity retention of 79% for 500 cycles and 74 mA h g−1 at a high current density of 1500 mA g−1. Such superior rate capability and long cycle life are ascribed to the synergistic effects of the structure and morphology of PB, which possesses low amounts of coordinated water and [Fe(CN)6] vacancies, large unit cell volume, and slight-etching surface in the cubic structure, good crystallinity and uniform particle size distribution.

Abstract

This paper examined the carbon market literature from 1992 to 2011 using bibliometric techniques based on the database of Science Citation Index (SCI) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI). Of 5809 publications, 82% were journal articles. Our analysis documents that carbon market publications are expanding rapidly. Based on the contribution of countries and their h-index, the US has published most and been most influential in this area, followed by the UK, Canada, Germany and China. The Chinese Academy of Sciences (120), US Forestry Service (70) and University of Maryland (68) were the most productive research institutes. The most common subject category, Environment Sciences (1551), experienced an exponential increase with an average growth rate of about 50%, and the most productive journal was Energy Policy (469). According to the analysis of keywords, the hotspots related to carbon markets were "global warming" and "carbon tax" in the 1990's, but "climate change" and the "clean development mechanism" superceded them in the most recent decade. The most cited article published in Science in carbon market research is presented. This analysis is not only helpful for policymakers and others to understand trends in the field, but may also influence researchers selection of future studies. Refereed/Peer-reviewed
