Abstract

How can we maximize what is learned from a replication study? In the creative destruction approach to replication, the original hypothesis is compared not only to the null hypothesis, but also to predictions derived from multiple alternative theoretical accounts of the phenomenon. To this end, new populations and measures are included in the design in addition to the original ones, to help determine which theory best accounts for the results across multiple key outcomes and contexts. The present pre-registered empirical project compared the Implicit Puritanism account of intuitive work and sex morality to theories positing regional, religious, and social class differences; explicit rather than implicit cultural differences in values; self-expression vs. survival values as a key cultural fault line; the general moralization of work; and false positive effects. Contradicting Implicit Puritanism's core theoretical claim of a distinct American work morality, a number of targeted findings replicated across multiple comparison cultures, whereas several failed to replicate in all samples and were identified as likely false positives. No support emerged for theories predicting regional variability and specific individual-differences moderators (religious affiliation, religiosity, and education level). 14. A study of influence of hydraulic pressure on micro-hydromechanical deep drawing considering size effects and surface roughness

Abstract

Micro-hydromechanical deep drawing (MHDD) is a promising micro-manufacturing technology to fabricate micro-metallic products in batch scale. Size effects significantly affect MHDD regarding both material properties and friction. Hydraulic pressure on the blank and its development differ from that in conventional hydromechanical deep drawing. Combined influence of fluid pressure, surface roughness and material inhomogeneity of the blank was investigated in this study via MHDD experiments and advanced FE simulation considering strong fluid-solid interaction (FSI) and size effects. The MHDD experiments under different hydraulic pressures were conducted using the annealed foil followed by the advanced FE simulation. The foil can be successfully drawn into micro-cups, however, wrinkles occurred under high hydraulic pressures. Wrinkle height and number are affected by hydraulic pressure and size effects. Average hydraulic pressure on the blank is lower than the inlet pressure, and pressure development on the blank depends on location and is complex, due to transition of sealing between the blank and die. The maximum drawing force increases, while the contact forces and pressures on the blank holder and die decrease with an increase of hydraulic pressure. Optimal hydraulic pressure for MHDD should be determined with consideration of size effects and MHDD tool geometry.

15. Effect of drainage on CO2, CH4, and N2O fluxes from aquaculture ponds during winter in a subtropical estuary of China

Abstract

Aquaculture ponds are dominant features of the landscape in the coastal zone of China. Generally, aquaculture ponds are drained during the non-culture period in winter. However, the effects of such drainage on the production and flux of greenhouse gases (GHGs) from aquaculture ponds are largely unknown. In the present study, field-based research was performed to compare the GHG fluxes between one drained pond (DP, with a water depth of 0.05 m) and one undrained pond (UDP, with a water depth of 1.16 m) during one winter in the Min River estuary of southeast China. Over the entire study period, the mean CO 2 flux in the DP was (0.75 ± 0.12) mmol/(m 2 ·hr), which was significantly higher than that in the UDP of (− 0.49 ± 0.09) mmol/(m 2 ·hr) ( p 2 in winter. Mean CH 4 and N 2 O emissions were significantly higher in the DP compared to those in the UDP (CH 4 = (0.66 ± 0.31) vs. (0.07 ± 0.06) mmol/(m 2 ·hr) and N 2 O = (19.54 ± 2.08) vs. (0.01 ± 0.04) µmol/(m 2 ·hr)) ( p 4 and N 2 O emissions. Changes in environmental variables (including sediment temperature, pH, salinity, redox status, and water depth) contributed significantly to the enhanced GHG emissions following pond drainage. Furthermore, analysis of the sustained-flux global warming and cooling potentials indicated that the combined global warming potentials of the GHG fluxes were significantly higher in the DP than in the UDP ( p 2 -eq/(m 2 ·hr), respectively. Our findings suggested that drainage of aquaculture ponds can increase the emissions of potent GHGs from the coastal zone of China to the atmosphere during winter, further aggravating the problem of global warming.

Abstract

The combustion characteristics of liquefied petroleum gas inside porous heating burners have been investigated experimentally under steady-state and transient conditions. Cooling tubes were embedded in the postflame region of the packed bed of a porous heating burner. The flame speed, temperature profile, and [NO x ] and [CO] in the product gases were monitored during an experiment. Due to the heat removal by the cooling tubes, a phenomenon termed metastable combustion was observed; this is that only one flame speed exists at a particular equivalence ratio for maintaining stable combustion within the porous bed of the porous heating burner. This behavior is quite different from that of porous burners without cooling tubes, in which an extended range of flame speeds usually is found for maintaining stable combustion. After metastable combustion has been established in a porous heating burner, a change in the equivalence ratio will stop the metastable combustion and drive the flame out of the packed bed. From the steady-state results, the porous heating burner was shown to maintain stable combustion under fuel-lean conditions with an equivalence ratio lower than the flammability limit of a normal free-burning system. The flame speed in a porous heating burner was found to decrease with an increase in the length of the porous bed. Combustion within a porous heating burner has the features of low flame temperature, extended reaction zone, high preheating temperature and low emissions of NO x and CO. The flame temperature ranged from 1050 to 1250 °C, which is ∼ 200 °C lower than the adiabatic flame temperature at the corresponding equivalence ratio. The length of the reaction zone could be more than 70 mm and the preheating temperature ranged from 950 to 1000 °C. Both [NO x ] and [CO] were low, typically below 10 ppm.
