Gallium nitride nanowire and nanorod substrates are prospective platforms allowing to control the local strain distribution in graphene films on top of them, resulting in an induction of pseudomagnetic fields. AFM measurements performed in a HybriD mode complemented by SEM allow for a detailed visualization of the strain distribution on graphene surface. Graphene in direct contact with supporting regions is tensile strained, while graphene located in-between is characterized by lower strain. Characteristic tensile strained wrinkles also appear in the areas between the supporting regions. A positive correlation between strain gradient and distances between borders of supporting regions is observed. These results are confirmed by analysis of the Raman D’ band intensity, which is affected by an enhancement of intravalley scattering. Furthermore, scanning tunneling spectroscopy shows a local modification of the density of states near the graphene wrinkle and weak localization measurements indicate the enhancement of pseudomagnetic field-induced scattering. Therefore, we show that nanowire and nanorod substrates provide strain engineering and induction of pseudomagnetic fields in graphene. The control of graphene morphology by modification of distances between supporting regions is promising for both further fundamental research and the exploration of innovative ways to fabricate pseudomagnetic field-based devices like sensors or filters.

Retzius-sparing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RS-RARP) has been shown to improve continence. However, questions remain regarding feasibility and generalizability of technique and outcomes.To compare the outcomes of 140 consecutive standard robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (S-RARP) versus RS-RARP.A total of 70 S-RARPs were performed followed by 70 RS-RARPs. Demographic, pathologic, and functional outcomes were compared preoperatively and through 12 mo. Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite for Clinical Practice (EPIC-CP) was used to compare functional outcomes. Logistic and linear regression analyses were utilized to analyze variables associated with EPIC-CP urinary incontinence and overall quality of life (QOL) scores, and oncologic outcomes. Cox regression analysis was used to analyze incontinence at 12 mo.RS-RARP versus S-RARP.Patient and tumor characteristics (age, body mass index, prostate-specific antigen, Charlson Comorbidity Index, Gleason group, clinical stage, and Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System score), perioperative outcomes (console time, estimated blood loss, postoperative complications, and length of stay), oncologic outcomes (positive surgical margin [PSM], and biochemical recurrence), overall and 12-mo continence rates (zero pads and zero to one safety pad), time to continence, potency (erection sufficient for sexual activity), EPIC-CP urinary incontinence, sexual function, and overall QOL scores.Median follow-up for S-RARP versus RS-RARP was 46.3 versus 12.3 mo. RS-RARP versus S-RARP had improved overall continence rates at total follow-up (95.7% vs 85.7%, p = 0.042) and 12-mo follow-up (97.6% vs 81.4%, p = 0.002), and faster return to continence (zero to one safety pad, 44 vs 131 d, p 0.001). RS-RARP EPIC-CP urinary incontinence and overall QOL scores remained significantly better at 12 mo. There were no differences in overall PSM rates, although RS-RARP had lower rates of nonfocal PSMs. There were no differences in sexual function. In multivariate analysis, RS-RARP was significantly associated with improved 12-mo EPIC-CP urinary incontinence and improved QOL scores, but was not associated with PSM or biochemical recurrence. Limitations include retrospective study design and unequal follow-up; however, significantly better RS-RARP continence at 12 mo is striking despite fewer patients attaining 12-mo follow-up.RS-RARP significantly improves early and long-term continence without compromising oncologic outcomes and leads to overall improved QOL.Retzius-sparing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy is an emerging technique for robotic radical prostatectomy that improves urinary function and quality of life without compromising cancer control.

Intravenous dexmedetomidine 30 µg reduces shivering after cesarean delivery but can result in sedation and dry mouth. We hypothesized that prophylactic administration of 10 µg of IV dexmedetomidine would reduce the patient-reported severity of shivering after cesarean delivery, without an increased incidence of side effects.After institutional review board approval and informed written consent, women undergoing scheduled cesarean delivery with spinal or combined spinal-epidural anesthesia were randomized to receive either intravenous normal saline or dexmedetomidine 10 µg immediately after delivery. The primary outcome was a patient-rated subjective shivering score using a 10-cm visual analog scale at 30 and 60 min after arrival in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit. Secondary outcomes included subjective scores for pain, nausea, itching, dry mouth, and sedation, as well as 24-h medication administration and investigator-rated observations of shivering, vomiting, pruritus, and sedation. Repeated measures ANOVA with Tukey-Kramer multiple-comparison test was applied for primary outcomes.One hundred patients were enrolled, and 85 completed the study and were included in analysis. The mean ± SD shivering score in the dexmedetomidine group was significantly lower by repeated measures analysis than among controls across the first 60 min (P=0.0002), and individually at both 30 and 60 min (placebo 1.8 ± 2.6 vs. dexmedetomidine 0.6 ± 1.4 at 30 min; 1.2 ± 2.1 vs. 0.3 ± 0.6 at 60 min; both P0.01). Patient-rated and observer-rated side effects did not significantly differ between groups.Prophylactic administration of intravenous dexmedetomidine 10 µg after delivery reduces shivering without notable side effects.

Radical prostatectomy has undergone many adaptations since its inception, including the Retzius-sparing robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy approach. In this article, we review the origins of radical prostatectomy, the theoretic basis for Retzius-sparing robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy, and outline the key steps of the procedure. To date, there have been 9 studies comparing the outcomes of Retzius-sparing robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy with standard robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy, which have demonstrated improved continence outcomes for Retzius sparing robotic assisted radical prostatectomy within the first year and equivalent oncologic efficacy out to 18 months. Further research is needed to evaluate sexual function outcomes as well as long-term oncologic outcomes.

Background Retzius-sparing robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RS-RARP) has improved urinary function compared with standard robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (S-RARP). As RS-RARP spares the dorsal vascular complex, pelvic fascia, and anterior abdominal fascia, it may also lower the incidence of “neglected” postprostatectomy sequelae such as penile shortening, Peyronie’s disease, and inguinal hernias. Objective To determine whether there are patient-perceived differences in penile shortening, Peyronie’s disease, and inguinal hernia rates among men undergoing RS-RARP versus S-RARP. Design, setting, and participants Researchers uninvolved in clinical care and blinded to surgical approach surveyed 60 RS-RARP versus 57 S-RARP men with validated patient-reported items to assess penile shortening, Peyronie’s disease, and inguinal hernia sequelae following surgery. Intervention RS-RARP versus S-RARP. Outcome measurements and statistical analysis Univariate differences between the two cohorts were analyzed using Student t test. Logistic regression was used to analyze variables associated with postoperative penile shortening. Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the risk of developing Peyronie’s disease and inguinal hernia postoperatively. Results and limitations RS-RARP was associated with less patient-reported penile shortening (41.7% vs 64.9%, p = 0.012), Peyronie’s disease (0% vs 8.7%, p = 0.020), and inguinal hernia (0.0% vs 13.0%, p = 0.004). In adjusted analyses, RS-RARP (odds ratio [OR] 0.24, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.09–0.63, p = 0.004) was associated with lower odds of penile shortening, while a higher body mass index was associated with increased odds of penile shortening (OR 1.13, 95% CI 1.01–1.26, p = 0.037). RS-RARP was not associated with a decreased risk of Peyronie’s disease on Cox proportion hazard model; however, these models are limited due to a limited number of events in our cohort. Limitations include retrospective design, patient-reported outcomes, and small cohorts. Conclusions RS-RARP is associated with less patient-reported penile shortening and may decrease the risk of Peyronie’s disease and postoperative inguinal hernia development. These new findings add to research, showing improved urinary continence and quality of life following RS-RARP; however, a prospective study is needed to validate these findings. Objective To evaluate the outcomes of men diagnosed with prostate cancer (CaP) following implanted treatments for advanced heart failure. Given the increasingly favorable 10-year life expectancy, MedStar Washington Hospital Center screens heart transplant (HT) candidates for CaP and other malignancies prior to intervention. Methods Men aged 18-90 with available pretransplant Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) who underwent left ventricular assist device (LVAD) and/or HT at MedStar Washington Hospital Center from 2007 to 2018 were identified. Serum PSA, CaP diagnosis, and treatment were captured and analyzed. Survival was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier curves. Results Data were available for 34 patients. Median age was 53 [IQR = 51-58]. Median follow-up was 77 months (95% CI = 40-87 months). Six men had postimplant elevated PSA (5.3; SD = 8.5) and 4 were diagnosed with CaP. Median age of CaP diagnosis was 59 [IQR = 58.5-62). As of 2018, 31 of the 34 patients were living, and none died from CaP. Five-year survival was 96% in those without CaP and 100% in those with CaP (Figure 2). Conclusion Our cohort represents the largest known cohort with heart failure treated by LVAD and/or HT and CaP. Our median age of 59 at CaP diagnosis is considerably younger than the national median of 66. 1 Of the 4 individuals diagnosed with CaP, 3 had high-grade disease. Given the favorable long-term survival of these patients post-LVAD and/or HT, age-appropriate treatment for CaP should be continued postimplantation.

Lumbar epidural analgesia (LEA) is commonly used for labor analgesia but up to 13% of epidural catheters fail and require replacement. Combined spinal-epidural analgesia is associated with a lower catheter failure rate. Few data exist regarding catheter replacement rates after dural-puncture epidural (DPE). We conducted a retrospective analysis comparing catheter failure rates between epidural and DPE techniques.This retrospective single-center trial reviewed all labor neuraxial analgesia procedures among 18 726 women across five years, and identified 810 DPE and 2667 LEA procedures. Catheter failure rates, consisting of replacement or requirement of general anesthesia for cesarean delivery, were compared. Propensity score matching was used to balance the groups.Dural-puncture epidural was associated with significantly fewer catheter failures compared with LEA (74/759 vs. 49/759, odds ratio 0.64, 95% CI 0.44 to 0.93, P=0.02). Sensitivity analysis excluding cases of general anesthesia confirmed this relationship. Risk factors identified for catheter failure included age, body mass index, and nulliparity. Dural-puncture epidural was associated with a longer mean time to catheter replacement (918 min vs. 609 min, P=0.04). Kaplan-Meier and Cox multivariate analyses confirmed this relationship. There was no significant difference in the requirement for epidural analgesia supplementation, but DPE required supplementation significantly later than LEA. There was no difference in the rate of headache or epidural blood patch between groups.Dural-puncture epidural is associated with fewer catheter failures and replacements than LEA, without an increase in the rate of post-dural puncture headache or epidural blood patch.

Sleep problems are commonly reported during opioid agonist treatment (OAT) for opioid use disorders. Inpatient studies have found both sleep disturbances and improved sleep during OAT. Illicit opioids can also disrupt sleep, but it is unclear how they affect sleep in outpatients receiving OAT. Therefore, we used electronic diary entries and actigraphy to measure sleep duration and timing in opioid-dependent participants (n = 37) treated with methadone (n = 15) or buprenorphine (n = 22). For 16 weeks, participants were assigned to attend our clinic under different operating hours in a crossover design: Early hours (07:00–09:00) vs. Late hours (12:00–13:00) for 4 weeks each in randomized order, followed for all participants by our Standard clinic hours (07:00–11:30) for 8 weeks. Throughout, participants made daily electronic diary self-reports of their sleep upon waking; they also wore a wrist actigraph for 6 nights in each of the three clinic-hour conditions. Drug use was assessed by thrice-weekly urinalysis. In linear mixed models controlling for other sleep-relevant factors, sleep duration and timing differed by drug use and by clinic hours. Compared to when non-using, participants slept less, went to bed later, and woke later when using illicit opioids and/or both illicit opioids and cocaine. Participants slept less and woke earlier when assigned to the Early hours. These findings highlight the role OAT clinic schedules can play in structuring the sleep/wake cycles of OAT patients and clarify some of the circumstances under which OAT patients experience sleep disruption in daily life.

Background Treatment with opioid agonists is effective for opioid use disorder, but early discontinuation of treatment is a major obstacle to success. Intensive longitudinal methods — which take many repeated measurements over time, usually in the field— have provided unique insight into the effects of stress, mood and craving on drug use while people are being treated; these methods might also be useful for studying the processes that lead people to drop out of treatment. Methods Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) was conducted for up to 17 weeks by obtaining multiple electronic diary entries per day from 238 participants being treated with methadone or buprenorphine-naloxone. Survival analysis was used to study two outcomes: dropping out of treatment and noncompliance with EMA self-report requirements. Self-reports of stress, craving, and mood were used as time-varying predictors. Demographic and psychosocial variables measured with the Addiction Severity Index at the start of treatment were used as time-invariant predictors. Results Dropping out of treatment was more likely in participants with more reported hassles (a measure of stress), higher levels of cocaine craving, lower levels of positive mood, a recent history of emotional abuse, a recent history of being bothered frequently by psychological problems, and with buprenorphine rather than methadone as their medication. In contrast, study noncompliance was not significantly associated with any of the variables analyzed. Conclusions Assessment of stress, craving and mood during treatment might identify people who are at greater risk of dropping out, and therapeutic interventions targeting these processes might increase retention.

Semimetals Bi and Sb are very important for both fundamental sciences and practical applications because of their unique band structure with nontrivial topology, high carrier mobility and strong spin-orbit coupling. Recently, research interests on Bi and Sb have been shifted from 3D bulk properties to 2D quantum behaviors because of emerging quantum confinement and surface effects that dominate at nanoscale. Ultrathin films of Bi and Sb are particularly promising for quantum transport and spintronic applications. Here we report a systematic first-principles study of electronic structure of Bi and Sb thin films. We also present a review of our experimental works on fabrication and characterization of Bi and Sb nanoscale thin films. The results, taken collectively, offer a comprehensive understanding of emergent electronic properties of these 2D spin-orbit coupled materials.

Currently, there is a concern at the national level of the overuse of both prescription and nonprescription opioid use. The purpose of this study was to identify whether the use of the intravenous (IV) formulation of acetaminophen (Ofirmev; Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals, Staines-upon-Thames, United Kingdom) is an effective tool in the reduction of postoperative pain, with a secondary goal of reduction of postoperative narcotic use.A total of 72 patients with previously diagnosed either partial bony or complete bony impacted third molars were selected with care to avoid long-acting local anesthetics or dissociative anesthetic agents. The patients' postoperative pain scores at 4 and 24 hours were collected via a verbal rating scale by the primary investigator. The exclusion criteria included administration of bupivacaine or ketamine, hepatic or renal impairment, pregnancy, or allergy to any of the normally administered sedation medications.At all postoperative increments (immediately, 4 hours, and 24 hours), there was no significant difference at P .05 between scores for either the IV acetaminophen or placebo group. Although there was a recorded difference in reduction of pain at both 4 and 24 hours postoperatively, these were not statistically significant variables.The use of IV acetaminophen showed no statistically significant decrease in patient pain at either 4 or 24 hours postoperatively. Although there are not representative data suggesting the routine use of IV acetaminophen, on the basis of the abundance of literature on the treatment of pain for other procedures, this medication should not be discarded as ineffective.

In adult cattle Fasciola hepatica infection usually follows a chronic subclinical course, and reduces both the milk yield and milk quality, resulting in considerable financial losses. Effective control of the disease is based on reliable identification of asymptomatically infected individuals, which now requires special parasitological or serological diagnostic tests. It is also known that F. hepatica infection induces alterations in some serum biochemical parameters. Therefore, the study was conducted to develop a model based on serum biochemical parameters allowing to identify cows at higher risk of chronic fascioliasis. Six hundred sixty eight adult dairy cows from 97 herds located in central and northeastern Poland were clinically examined, and blood and fecal samples from them were collected for a routine monitoring of fascioliasis and metabolic profile. Using the combination of fecal sedimentation test and indirect ELISA based on excretory/secretory products 203 cows, apparently healthy in clinical examination, were definitively classed as affected by (47 cows, 23.2%) or free from (156 cows, 76.8%) chronic fascioliasis. Their serum was screened for the activity of 4 enzymes (γ-glutamyl transpeptidase, glutamate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase, creatine kinase) and concentration of 18 other components (total bilirubin, total protein, albumin, globulin, urea, glucose, non-esterified fatty acids, β-hydroxybutyrate, sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc, iron, selenium, and haptoglobin). Logistic regression analysis was used to build 4 multivariable models allowing for identification of cows at risk of chronic fascioliasis. Then, the accuracy was compared between the models using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC), and an optimal cut-off value was determined for the most accurate model using Youden J index. The most accurate proved to be the model based on glutamate dehydrogenase activity and globulin, urea (all three positively linked with risk of chronic fascioliasis), and selenium concentration (negatively linked) adjusted by the access to pasture and cow's age. At the optimal cut-off of 0.37 this model had sensitivity of 85.1% (CI 95%:72.3%, 92.6%), specificity of 90.4% (CI 95%:84.7%, 94.1%), positive likelihood ratio of 8.8 (CI 95%:5.4, 14.5), and negative likelihood ratio of 0.16 (CI 95%:0.08, 0.33). This model performed significantly better than model including only γ-glutamyl transpeptidase or model including both γ-glutamyl transpeptidase and aspartate aminotransferase (both also adjusted by the access to pasture and cow's age), and was the only model which performed significantly better than the basic model based solely on the access to pasture and cow's age.

Bedding, environmental enrichment materials and disinfectant powders in pig farming are meant to ensure a hygienic bedding environment or allow pigs to perform explorative behaviour. To our knowledge, no legal regulation exists, that established maximum contents for undesirable substances, such as toxic metals, dioxins or trace elements in these materials, although oral ingestion could be expected. In the present study, a total of 74 materials (disinfectant powders [n = 51], earth/peat [n = 12], biochar [n = 8], recycled manure solids [n = 3]) were analysed for their content of various toxic metals, trace elements, dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls. The data suggest that, in some samples, trace elements like iron, copper and zinc might have been added intentionally in order to induce physiological effects (iron supply to piglets, copper and zinc as growth promoter in pigs). Moreover, some materials contained high levels of lead, cadmium or arsenic. Consequently, if farm animals repeatedly consume environmental enrichment and bedding materials or disinfectant powders in considerable amounts and these quantities are added to the daily ration, the amount of ingested undesirable substances and trace elements might exceed the maximum levels set for complete feedstuffs, and an elevated transfer into food of animal origin might occur. Future studies are required to address the possible quantitative contribution in the light of feed and food safety. Finally, the excretion of undesirable substances with manure needs to be considered due to their possible accumulation in soils.

Primary adenomas are common in the gastrointestinal tract but exceedingly rare on the periurethral surface and vagina. The pathogenesis remains unknown but vaginal adenomas are hypothesized to arise from vaginal adenosis or embryonic cloacal remnants and possess malignant potential. We present a case of a large primary vaginal tubulovillous adenoma in an eighty-one-year-old, likely diethylstilbestrol naïve patient. To the best of our knowledge the patient's 7.4 x 4.5 × 1.4 cm primary vaginal tubulovillous adenoma is the largest ever reported in literature., Highlights - Primary vaginal adenomas in diethylstilbestrol naïve patients are exceedingly rare - Vaginal adenomas have malignant potential and must be fully resected - There is no consensus on management of primary vaginal adenomas

In this article we present the results of our investigations of reduction of graphene oxide overprints, deposited by ink-jet method, by hydrobromic acid. Our study presents impact of different parameters of reduction, such as a temperature and time of the process on the chemical composition and electrical conductivity of the resulting material – reduced graphene oxide. Our results show the outstanding potential of this method for use in the production of flexible and elastic electronics and indicate the optimal parameters of reduction, which allow producing the optimal product.

Background Sleep disturbance is common in patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) receiving medication for addiction treatment. Differences between patients on the two primary agonist medications—methadone and buprenorphine—are not well understood. Methods In patients receiving either methadone or buprenorphine treatment for OUD, we examined sleep continuity and architecture using ambulatory monitoring to gather both an objective measure (daily sleep EEG; M = 5.76 days, SD = 1.46) and a subjective measure (daily sleep diary; M = 54.10 days, SD = 25.10) of sleep. Results Patients treated with buprenorphine versus methadone did not differ on any measure of sleep continuity or architecture. Women had longer EEG-derived total sleep time than men (d = -0.68, 95 % CI -1.32 to -0.09), along with lower %N2 (d = 0.94, 95 % CI 0.34–1.64) and greater %N3 (d = -0.94, 95 % CI -1.61 to -0.32). Self-reported sleep differed from EEG-derived estimates: wake after sleep onset was greater by EEG than by diary (d = 2.58, 95 % CI 1.74–3.63), and total sleep time and sleep efficiency were lower by EEG than by diary (d for sleep time = 2.93, 95 % CI 2.06–4.14; d for efficiency = 1.69, 95 % CI 0.98–2.49). Conclusions Patients treated with buprenorphine or methadone did not substantively differ in ambulatory measures of sleep. With both medications, there was a discrepancy between objective and subjective sleep measures. Further confirmatory evidence would inform the development of sleep-related recommendations for OUD patients undergoing agonist treatment.

Two coal blends of different composition made of lower, medium, and higher rank coals (further in the text LRC, MRC, and HRC appropriately) in the ratio of 70:20:10 and 20:70:10 were carbonized in a laboratory unit for coke-making with the use of X-raying. The carbonization of the blends was carried out with the briquettes having the same composition as the blend and with the briquettes made of HRC with 2 wt% of coal tar pitch (CTP), with 2 wt% of low density polyethylene (LDPE), and with 2 wt% of polypropylene (PP). Markers were introduced into the charges of the blends to enable measurements on X-ray pictures that are connected with volumetric changes. The same blends were pyrolyzed in thermobalance coupled with a TG/FT-IR interface. It has been proven experimentally that the addition of briquettes to the coal charge having the same composition as the charge leads to an increase in volume of the charge near the heating wall. The introduction of the briquettes made of higher rank coal with addition of CTP, LDPE, and PP reduces the increase in volume of the two charges at the stage of coal grain swelling. The briquettes made of the blend of HRC with LDPE are most exposed to gasification by decomposition products from blend 1; the composition of volatiles does not influence the gasification of the briquettes made of the blend of HRC with PP. The briquettes made of the blend of HRC with CTP substantially increase their thickness under the influence of a greater amount of volatile products.

The tip of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) gently interacting with the substrate is used to modify (110) bismuth islands deposited on highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG), and hence to investigate the atomic and electronic structure of the islands. The tip interaction leads to the evolution of metastable 3 ML thick regions into structures of higher thermodynamic stability, which in the case of bismuth on graphite are rods (typically ≥ 5 ML high) and stripes. The formation of trenches that extend along the stripes is observed which is related to the presence of kinks and weak bonds at the 3–5 ML interface. Migration of whole islands along particular substrate directions is evidence for superlubricity due to the misfit between Bi and HOPG unit cells. Perimeter diffusion through atoms and not vacancies is a driving force of all observed modifications. The Bi islands are found to be able to deform and their decay is not governed by Ostwald ripening (which is absent in this system). Instead quantum size effects play a major role in the evolution of the islands, as evidenced by the observation of preferred widths. Density functional theory calculations reveal an oval Fermi surface with de Broglie wavelength corresponding to observed width of islands. These results are all consistent with a thin film Bi allotrope which has both paired atomic layers on the surface and bulk-like chains of bonds vertically through the structure.

We report the growth of cross-shaped islands of NaCl on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and discuss the mechanism of formation and growth kinetics within the framework of diffusion limited aggregation (DLA). These structures are investigated using scanning probe microscopy. The shape and structure of these islands can be finely controlled by the deposition conditions. The islands exhibit large atomically flat surfaces which are ideal supports for investigations of the fundamental properties of deposited atoms, molecules or clusters. Bismuth nanostructures were deposited on the NaCl islands and were investigated via scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). The tunneling spectra recorded for particles on NaCl are surprisingly similar to those measured for similar particles on HOPG. We suggest that this is due to a ‘dead’ layer commonly observed for Bi thin films.

Background The incidence of infected urolithiasis is unknown, and evidence describing the optimal management strategy for obstruction is equivocal. Objective To examine the trends of infected urolithiasis in the United States, the practice patterns of competing treatment modalities, and to compare adverse outcomes. Design, setting, and participants A weighted estimate of 396385 adult patients hospitalized with infected urolithiasis was extracted from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample, 1999–2009. Outcome measurements and statistical analysis Time trend analysis examined the incidence of infected urolithiasis and associated sepsis, as well as rates of retrograde ureteral catheterization and percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) for urgent/emergent decompression. Propensity-score matching compared the rates of adverse outcomes between approaches. Results and limitations Between 1999 and 2009, the incidence of infected urolithiasis in women increased from 15.5 (95% confidence interval [CI], 15.3–15.6) to 27.6 (27.4–27.8)/100 000); men increased from 7.8 (7.7–7.9) to 12.1 (12.0–12.3)/100000. Rates of associated sepsis increased from 6.9% to 8.5% ( p =0.013), and severe sepsis increased from 1.7% to 3.2% ( p p =0.150). Among those undergoing immediate decompression, 113 459 (28.6%), PCN utilization decreased from 16.1% to 11.2% ( p =0.001), with significant regional variability. In matched analysis, PCN showed higher rates of sepsis (odds ratio [OR]: 1.63; 95% CI, 1.52–1.74), severe sepsis (OR: 2.28; 95% CI, 2.06–2.52), prolonged length of stay (OR: 3.18; 95% CI, 3.01–3.34), elevated hospital charges (OR: 2.71; 95%CI, 2.57–2.85), and mortality (OR: 3.14; 95%CI, 13–4.63). However, observational data preclude the assessment of timing between outcome and intervention, and disease severity. Conclusions Between 1999 and 2009, women were twice as likely to have infected urolithiasis. Rates of associated sepsis and severe sepsis increased, but mortality rates remained stable. Analysis of competing treatment strategies for immediate decompression demonstrates decreasing utilization of PCN, which showed higher rates of adverse outcomes. These findings should be viewed as preliminary and hypothesis generating, demonstrating the pressing need for further study.

Purpose Robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) offers reportedly comparable oncologic outcomes for localized disease compared with open radical retropubic prostatectomy (ORRP). However, the oncologic efficacy of RALP in locally-advanced prostate cancer (PCa) is less clear. We report and compare our experience with RALP and ORRP in men with locally advanced PCa. Methods Patients with locally advanced PCa (stage T3 or greater) were identified in both robotic and open cohorts. Clinicopathologic features including age, clinical stage, prostate-specific antigen, surgical margins, and Gleason score were reviewed. We further examined the incidence of positive surgical margins, the effect of the surgical learning curve on margins, and the need for adjuvant therapy. Results From 1997 to 2010, 1,011 patients underwent RALP and 415 patients were identified who underwent radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP) across four institutions. 140 patients in the RALP group and 95 in the RRP group had locally advanced PCa on final pathology. The overall robotic positive margin rate 47.1% compared with 51.4% in the RRP group. A trend towards a lower positive margin rate was seen after 300 cases in the RALP group, with 66.7% positive margin rate in the first 300 cases compared with 41.8% in the latter 700 cases. In addition, a lower incidence of biochemical recurrence was also noted in the latter cases (30.6% vs. 9.5%). Conclusions Up to 2 out of 3 men undergoing RALP for locally-advanced PCa had positive margins during our initial experience. However, with increasing surgeon experience the overall positive margin rate decreased significantly and was comparable to the positive margin rate for patients with locally advanced disease undergoing ORRP over four academic institutions. We also noted a lower incidence of biochemical recurrence with increasing RALP experience, suggesting better oncologic outcomes with higher volume. Given this data, RALP has comparable oncologic outcomes compared to ORRP, especially with higher volume surgeons.

Although the use of minimally invasive radical prostatectomy (MIRP) has increased, there are few comprehensive population-based studies assessing temporal trends and outcomes relative to retropubic radical prostatectomy (RRP).Assess temporal trends in the utilization and outcomes of MIRP and RRP among US Medicare beneficiaries from 2003 to 2007.A population-based retrospective study of 19 594 MIRP and 58 638 RRP procedures was performed from 2003 to 2007 from the 100% Medicare sample, composed of almost all US men ≥ 65 yr of age.MIRP and RRP.We measured 30-d outcomes (cardiac, respiratory, vascular, genitourinary, miscellaneous medical, miscellaneous surgical, wound complications, blood transfusions, and death), cystography utilization within 6 wk of surgery, and late complications (anastomotic stricture, ureteral complications, rectourethral fistulae, lymphocele, and corrective incontinence surgery).From 2003 to 2007, MIRP increased from 4.9% to 44.5% of radical prostatectomies while RRP decreased from 89.4% to 52.9%. MIRP versus RRP subjects were younger (p0.001) and had fewer comorbidities (p0.001). Decreased MIRP genitourinary complications (6.2-4.1%; p = 0.002), miscellaneous surgical complications (4.7-3.7%; p=0.030), transfusions (3.5-2.2%; p=0.005), and postoperative cystography utilization (40.3-34.1%; p0.001) were observed over time. Conversely, overall RRP perioperative complications increased (27.4-32.0%; p0.001), including an increase in perioperative mortality (0.5-0.8%, p=0.009). Late RRP complications increased, with the exception of fewer anastomotic strictures (10.2-8.8%; p=0.002). In adjusted analyses, RRP versus MIRP was associated with increased 30-d mortality (odds ratio [OR]: 2.67; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.55-4.59; p0.001) and more perioperative (OR: 1.60; 95% CI, 1.45-1.76; p0.001) and late complications (OR: 2.52; 95% CI, 2.20-2.89; p0.001). Limitations include the inability to distinguish MIRP with versus without robotic assistance and also the lack of pathologic information.From 2003 to 2007, there were fewer MIRP transfusions, genitourinary complications, and miscellaneous surgical complications, whereas most RRP perioperative and late complications increased. RRP versus MIRP was associated with more postoperative mortality and complications.

Thin permalloy films 10 nm and 60 nm thick were investigated. They were thermally evaporated at an incidence angle of 0° in a vacuum of about 10 −5 mbar. The magnetic structure of the films was observed with the Fresnel mode of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), while their morphological structure was revealed using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The magnetic structure consisted of domains typically 10–30 μm in size. The films were substantially magnetized in the plane of the film. The domain walls of Neel type as well as cross-tie walls occurred in the films 10 nm thick, while in the films 60 nm thick the presence of cross-tie walls was only observed. The presence of cross-tie walls in the films 10 nm thick is reported for the first time. The coexistence of Neel type and cross-tie walls in the films 10 nm thick means that their wall energies are comparable at this film thickness, and this statement is supported by the results of theoretical works. The morphological structure of the films was composed of nanocrystalline grains smaller than about 30 nm in size; the films 60 nm thick had grains somewhat larger in size than the films 10 nm thick. The random distribution of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the individual nanocrystalline grains is found to be practically averaged out by exchange interaction, which leads consequently to the strongly reduced effective magnetic anisotropy and the wide magnetic domains on a 10 μm scale.

Grain boundaries in thin Bi(1 1 0) films deposited on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite are investigated at atomic resolution using scanning tunnelling microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. We find preferred misorientation angles Θ equal to 216°, 87°, 49°, 31°, 20°, 12° and 5°, the majority of which can be classified as large-angle boundaries. We find good agreement between the experimental results and a model of the tilt [1 1 0] grain boundary developed here. A method for estimating the surface unit cell based on measurement of dihedral angle in low-resolution images is also developed.

Although subtle technical variation affects potency preservation during robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RARP), most prostatectomy studies focus on achieving the optimal anatomic nerve-sparing dissection plane. However, the impact of active assistant/surgeon neurovascular bundle (NVB) countertraction on sexual function outcomes has not been studied or quantified.To illustrate technique and compare sexual function outcomes for nerve sparing without (NS-0C) versus with (NS-C) assistant and/or surgeon NVB countertraction.This is a retrospective study of 342 NS-0C versus 268 NS-C RARP procedures performed between August 2008 and February 2011.RARP.We used the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite (EPIC) sexual function and potency scores, estimated blood loss (EBL), operative time, and positive surgical margin (PSM).In unadjusted analysis, men undergoing NS-0C versus NS-C were older, had worse baseline sexual function, higher biopsy and pathologic Gleason grade, and higher preoperative prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels (all p ≤ 0.023). However, NS-0C versus NS-C was associated with higher 5-mo sexual function scores (20 vs 10; p0.001), and this difference was accentuated for bilateral intrafascial nerve sparing in preoperatively potent men (35.8 vs 16.6; p0.001). Similarly, 5-mo potency for preoperatively potent men was better with bilateral intrafascial NS-0C versus NS-C (45.0% vs 28.4%; p = 0.039). However, no difference in sexual function or potency was observed at 12 mo. In adjusted analyses, NS-0C versus NS-C was associated with improved 5-mo sexual function (parameter estimate: 10.90; standard error: 2.16; p0.001) and potency (odds ratio: 1.69; 95% confidence interval, 1.01-2.83; p = 0.046). NS-0C versus NS-WC was associated with shorter operative times (p = 0.001) and higher EBL (p = 0.001); however, there were no significant differences in PSM. Limitations include the retrospective, single-surgeon study design and smaller numbers for 12-mo comparison.Reliance on countertraction to facilitate dissecting NVB away from the prostate leads to neuropraxia and delayed recovery of sexual function and potency. Subtle technical modification to dissect the prostate away from the NVB without countertraction enables earlier return of sexual function and potency.

The growth of bismuth thin films on highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) was studied using ultra high vacuum (UHV) scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The locations of the main XPS peaks, and also the plasmon energy, are in good agreement with results recorded on bulk bismuth. The shape of the Bi 4f doublet, as well as the well developed Fermi edge, indicates the metallic character of the deposited film. One of the observed shoulders is identified with a quantum-well subband characteristic of thin bismuth films. There is no evidence for the existence of Bi–C bonds, consistent with weak bonding between the Bi islands and the HOPG. The height of the islands and their crystallographic orientation were investigated as a function of surface coverage. The Bi islands grow with the (110) plane parallel to the substrate. The observed heights (3, 5, 7, 9 ML) indicate that the preferred crystal structure involves paired layers on an intermediate mono-atomic Bi layer. There is evidence both for and against the Black Phosphorus like allotrope, and the nature of both the layer pairing and the intermediate layer are yet to be resolved. The islands exhibit stripes oriented along the 1 1 ¯ 0 > axis of the Bi crystal, which is a fast growth direction due to the existence of strongly bonded zig-zag chains of atoms. The surface unit cell and the parameters of the rhombohedral bulk unit cell are estimated based on atomic resolution images. In the case of 2 ML stripes on top of a 5 ML base, the expansion of the outer atomic rows was estimated at 27%. Asymmetries in the growth of the islands are observed. Based on low coverage depositions at reduced substrate temperatures, it is proposed that there is a second fast growth direction corresponding to preferential attachment of atoms to one of the faces of the asymmetric, rhombic cross-section of the (110) crystal.

Background Large prostate size, median lobes, and prior benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) surgery may pose technical challenges during robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP). Objective To describe technical modifications to overcome BPH sequelae and associated outcomes. Design, settings, and participants A retrospective study of prospective data on 951 RALP procedures performed from September 2005 to November 2010 was conducted. Outcomes were analyzed by prostate weight, prior BPH surgical intervention ( n =59), and median lobes >1cm ( n =42). Surgical procedure RALP. Measurements Estimated blood loss (EBL), blood transfusions, operative time, positive surgical margin (PSM), and urinary and sexual function were measured. Results and limitations In unadjusted analysis, men with larger prostates and median lobes experienced higher EBL (213.5 vs 176.5ml; p p =0.002), and larger prostates were associated with more transfusions (4 vs 1; p =0.037). Operative times were longer for men with larger prostates (164.2 vs 149.1min; p =0.002), median lobes (185.8 vs 155.0min; p =0.004), and prior BPH surgical interventions (170.2 vs 155.4min; p =0.004). Men with prior BPH interventions experienced more prostate base PSM (5.1% vs 1.2%; p =0.018) but similar overall PSM. In adjusted analyses, the presence of median lobes increased both EBL ( p =0.006) and operative times ( p p =0.014). However, prostate size did not affect EBL, PSM, or recovery of urinary or sexual function. Conclusions Although BPH characteristics prolonged RALP procedure times and increased EBL, prostate size did not affect PSM or urinary and sexual function.

Self-assembled monolayer of dithiol molecules, deposited on polycrystalline Au (111), prepared at room atmosphere, was studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Dithiols were used as interface, which chemically bonds to the deposited gold nanoparticles through strong covalent bonds. The size and size distribution of the deposited nanoparticles were measured using dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM results showed that nanoparticles are immobilized and stable during scanning procedure and do not contaminate the AFM tip. The size of monodisperse nanoparticles obtained from the DLS measurements is slightly higher than that obtained from the AFM and SEM measurements. This is due to the fact that the DLS measures the hydrodynamic radius, dependent on the protective chemical layer on nanoparticles.

In this paper, vapor phase deposition was used to grow fluoroalkylsilane films on cobalt surface. The films were characterized by contact angle analyzer for hydrophobicity and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for identification of fluoroorganic monolayers deposited on the surfaces. Adhesion and friction measurements were performed using atomic force microscope (AFM) and compared with measurements made by microtribometer operated in millinewton (mN) applied load range. Nano- and microtribological measurements show that cobalt modified by fluoroalkylsilanes has lower adhesion and coefficient of friction. The investigation also indicates a decrease of friction coefficient with increasing fluoric alkyl chain length. Covalently bonded fluoroalkylsilanes with longer alkyl chains are found to be a prime candidate for practical use as a lubricant.

Thin cobalt films, 40 nm and 100 nm in thickness, were deposited by thermal evaporation at an incidence angle of 45° in a system with a base pressure of approximately 10 −5 mbar, simultaneously on unheated glass substrates and NaCl crystals. The magnetic microstructure of the films was investigated with the conventional Bitter pattern technique and the Fresnel mode of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), while the morphological structure was observed using TEM, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The films were found to have uniaxial in-plane magnetic anisotropy. The magnetic microstructure of the films 40 nm and 100 nm thick consisted of domains running (and magnetized) predominantly in the direction perpendicular and parallel to the incidence plane, respectively. For the films studied, some correlation between the magnetic microstructure and the morphological structure was detected.

We report on the growth of ultra-thin bismuth (Bi) films on the basal plane of highly ordered pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) substrates; we investigate the morphologies of films grown at room temperature and then annealed at high temperature, and the morphologies of Bi structures grown at high temperature. Films grown at room temperature nucleate flat islands on the HOPG terraces, and 1D nanorods from HOPG step edges, the islands and rods both have heights in the range 1–3 nm. During annealing, the flat islands break up into groups of aligned, ∼ 2.5 nm tall rods. For films grown at high temperature, terrace nucleation is almost nonexistent, and 1D structures grow from step edges, with heights up to 30 nm. Finally, we observe rods with distinctively different morphologies corresponding to (110) and (111) orientations, and infer a surface energy driven Bi(110) to Bi(111) orientation transition. We speculate that the dominant mechanism for the reorientation is coalescence.

In this paper, we present a combined STM and EPR study on the adsorption and self-organization of monolayers formed from 2-(14-Carboxytetradecyl)-2-ethyl-4,4-dimethyl-3-oxazolidinyloxy (16DS) and 4′,4′-Dimethylspiro(5α-cholestane-3,2′-oxazolidin)-3′-yloxy (CSL) adsorbed on a highly oriented pyrolitic graphite HOPG(0 0 0 1) substrate. Both 16DS and CSL molecules are persistent free radicals containing a paramagnetic doxyl group. The STM measurements of 16DS on HOPG(0 0 0 1) were performed at the liquid–solid interface while the studies of CSL on HOPG(0 0 0 1) were carried out under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. It was found that the 16DS molecules on the HOPG(0 0 0 1) surface form a highly-ordered monolayer with a domain structure. The high-resolution STM images show structural details of 16DS molecules on HOPG(0 0 0 1) revealing the paramagnetic doxyl group. In contrast, CSL molecules on HOPG(0 0 0 1) form a well-ordered monolayer without domain structure. The EPR results indicate that both compounds deposited on HOPG(0 0 0 1) substrate are not reduced and retain their paramagnetic character. We believe that the molecular systems described can be used in single spin detection experiments using an electron spin noise-scanning tunnelling microscopy (ESN-STM) technique. In particular, the possibility of obtaining contrast spin signals from the paramagnetic and diamagnetic parts of molecules increases the significance of our results.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) have been used to study the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) deposited on Au(1 1 1). It is found out that the AgNPs form a layer which covers most of the Au surface. XPS has been used to observe the changes in the core levels of the AgNPs due to a high-temperature treatment. The XPS investigations clearly show that annealing of the AgNPs films at 620 K results in decreasing of the Ag 3d peaks intensity. At 770 K it is not possible to detect silver signal in the XPS spectra. However, after soft Ar + sputtering of the sample silver is again detectable. Our results show that during annealing of the AgNPs deposited on Au(1 1 1), the hydrocarbon-based ligands decompose and at higher temperatures diffusion of silver cores into gold substrate takes place. In the theoretical part of the work the Ag diffusion has been studied using a mean field theory for minimizing the mixing free energy with respect to the atomic configuration and local spatial relaxation. The present approach searches for energetically the most favorable equilibrium structure of the surface region described in terms of random-alloy within the Valenta model of the inhomogeneous systems. As a result, the layer resolved atomic configuration in the surface region in different temperatures has been obtained. Both results, experimental and theoretical, are consistent.

Current imaging tunneling spectroscopy (CITS) carried out in UHV at room temperature was used to study the electronic structure of the Au(1 1 1) surface in the range of −1.0–1.0 eV. The CITS experiment showed the existence of the Shockley surface state (SS) located in range 0.3–0.7 eV below the Fermi level. A wide range of SS locations is explained by the influence of the electronic structure of the tip on the measurement of the tunneling current. This hypothesis is supported by a simple theoretical model. Finally, a new method of CITS analysis is suggested. The method is related to counting local maxima locations on each tunneling spectroscopy curve and building a histogram. This method of data analysis allows finding statistically the most frequently appearing maxima. Using the histogram method the location of the SS is estimated to 0.47 eV below the Fermi level.

Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) were used to investigate the influence of the TMP amine derivative on Au (1 1 1). The STM results show that the gold surface covered by the adlayer of the TMP derivative is easily modified (holes formation) after increasing the bias voltage to 0.5 V. The CV and EPR results show the electrochemical origin of observed STM topography changes. It is suggested that TMP could be oxidized to the nitroxyl TEMPO radical which adsorbs on Au in the form of an oxoammonium cation. Such an oxoammonium cation at the potential of 0.5 V forms a permanent complex of gold and the nitroxyl radical which could be easily desorbed during STM imaging.

In this paper we present scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) investigations of gold with 2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidine (TMP) overlayer. During the STM experiments the creation of holes and hills or no changes of the surface were observed depending on the applied bias voltage and polarity. No modifications were observed in the bias range from −0.5 to +0.5 V. The holes were created for the bias voltages greater than +0.5 V and hills for the bias voltages lower than −0.5 V. The observed changes of the surface morphology suggest the presence of electrochemical reaction between the tip and the surface. Additionally, our results suggest that TMP lowers the electrochemical activation energy of gold to +0.5 eV.

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) carried out in vacuum and air were used to study the electronic structure of the Au (1 1 1) surface in the range of 0.0–0.7 eV below the Fermi level. The STS experiment carried out in UHV showed the existence of the Shockley surface state (SS) located 0.48 eV below the Fermi level. STS carried out in air showed strong local maximum located 0.35 eV below the Fermi level. This maximum was ascribed to the SS shifted toward lower energy due to carbon and oxygen overlayer. To confirm that the SS could exist on the sample exposed to air we did ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) experiment on air-treated and clean Au (1 1 1). Our results suggest that the SS position initially measured at 0.38 eV below the Fermi level was shifted to 0.27 eV after air treatment. Additionally, the level of contamination was measured using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

The electronic structure of silicon carbide (SiC) nanowires was studied for the first time using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and current imaging tunneling spectroscopy (CITS). The STS spectra indicated that the surface of nanowires has an n-type semiconducting behavior which is attributed to nitrogen doping of the sample material. The local density of states (LDOS) showed characteristic peaks in occupied and unoccupied part of the spectra. The origin of the LDOS maxima were discussed in contexts of the dopant-induced states, the subsurface defects, and the surface states related to the local reconstruction process. The work shows the applicability to investigate the SiC nanowires by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy.

High temperature scanning tunneling microscope (HT-STM) was used to investigate a reconstructed Au(1 1 1) film evaporated on mica. The experiment was carried out at elevated temperatures in the range of 300–500 K. A herringbone reconstruction was observed at a wide range of temperatures. However, at the highest temperatures studied a break down of the reconstruction long range order was noticed. Finally, the presence of a triangular-like reconstruction was reported. Changes in the reconstruction were explained in terms of the change in surface stress arising as a result of the tension at the gold–mica interface.

High-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy, scanning tunnelling spectroscopy and current imaging tunnelling spectroscopy (HT-STM/STS/CITS) were used to study the topographic and electronic structures changes due to surface modifications of the TiO2(1 1 0) surface caused by the STM tip. In situ high-temperature STM results showed that the created modifications were stable even at elevated temperatures. The STS/CITS results showed the presence of energy gap below the Fermi level on the untreated regions. The disappearance of energy gap below the Fermi level on the modifications created by the tip was observed. It is assumed that the presence of the tip can change the chemical stoichiometry of the surface from TiO2� x towards Ti2O3. � 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) were used to study the electronic structure of Au(1 1 1) surface in the range of 2–5.5 eV above the Fermi level. In this paper, we concentrate firstly on the position of the upper band gap edge (BE) existing in [1 1 1] direction in Au(1 1 1) and secondly on the position of the resonant image potential surface state (RIS) located in the bulk states approximately 1.1 eV above BE. The experiment was carried out in UHV at two temperatures 294 K and 580 K. Our high temperature STS (HT-STS) results clearly show the presence of RIS and BE local maxima at both temperatures. What is more, a slight shift towards the Fermi level of BE and RIS was observed. Those shifts were the consequence of the change of [1 1 1] band gap and lowering gold work function due to the thermal extension of interatomic distances. Finally, estimation of the work function was given at 294 K and 580 K.

High temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy (HT-STS) was used to investigate the electronic structure of Au(1 1 1) at different temperatures in the energy range 0–1 eV below the Fermi level. We concentrated on the influence of temperature on the Shockley surface state (SS) appearing on noble metals surface due to a surface projected bulk bang gap in [1 1 1] direction. The influence of temperature on the projected band gap edge (BE) was also investigated. The experiment was carried out in the temperature range 294–580 K. As the result of the experiment a delicate shift of the SS and the BE in direction of the Fermi level was reported.

Although most studies show that women have higher subjective pain ratings in response to painful stimuli, there is less consistency across studies with regard to the influence of gonadal hormones on pain responsivity. The present study evaluated sex differences in response to cold pressor pain in normally menstruating women (NMW), women maintained on oral contraceptives (OCW), and men. Testing occurred during 5 phases of the menstrual cycle. All participants completed 10 sessions (2 sessions per phase). During the cold pressor test, participants immersed the forearm into water maintained at 4°C, and pain threshold and tolerance were measured. Subjective ratings of pain, physiologic indices, and plasma levels of estradiol and progesterone were also assessed. Both estradiol and progesterone levels varied as a function of menstrual cycle phase in NMW and were significantly higher in NMW compared with OCW and men. There were no significant differences in pain threshold or tolerance for any of the groups as a function of menstrual cycle phase. There were no significant differences in pain tolerance between groups. However, pain threshold was higher in NMW compared with OCW and men. When the data were reanalyzed across consecutive sessions, a significant sex-by-day interaction was observed for both threshold and tolerance. Specifically, pain threshold and tolerance were similar for NMW, OCW, and men, but these latencies changed at different rates across session days. Pain threshold remained relatively constant for both OCW and men, but it increased across days for NMW. Pain tolerance remained stable across sessions in OCW, a slow consistent increase was observed for men, whereas a sharper increase, followed by an asymptote, was observed for NMW. These results suggest that circulating gonadal hormones might mediate adaptation to cold pressor pain. Perspective The present study supports the notion that differences in pain perception between the sexes and among menstrual cycle phases are subtle. However, normally menstruating women exhibited an increase in pain tolerance and threshold over repeated stimulation, whereas men exhibited a shallow increase in pain threshold only, suggesting a sex difference in the adaptation to painful stimuli in men and women.

The kinetics of the peroxy radicals (RXO 2 ) interactions with NO and NO 2 have been studied by using pulse radiolysis technique combined with time-resolved UV absorption gas phase spectroscopy. The rate coefficients of the reactions of NO ( k 3 ) and of NO 2 ( k 4 ) with 11 RXO 2 radicals originated from RHX=CHF 3 , CHCl 2 F, CH 2 Cl 2 , CH 2 F 2 , CH 3 F, C 2 H 5 Cl, C 2 H 5 F, CH 2 ClCF 3 , CHF 2 CHF 2 , CH 2 FCH 2 F and CH 3 CClF 2 have been obtained and are collected in Table 1

Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy were used to observe the variations of electronic structure on the carbon nanotube Y-junction. The electronic structure derived from tunneling conductance maps showed natural me- tallic-metallic and semiconducting-metallic transitions close to the Y-junction, and the occurrence of metallic character of the whole Y-junction with the presence of additional resonant state at energy of 0.2 eV below the Fermi level.
